That's part of why the Hawk situation is so tragic. It's a good team that nobody watches.

Speculation on how the Maloof's ownership shares may come into play
http://www.cowbellkingdom.com/2013/...en-here-before/

quote:

There is another little tidbit hiding in the current breakdown of Kings ownership that might come into play. According to our research, the Maloofs own 43 percent of the Kings and another 10-percent is controlled by their friend Bob Hernreich. They have a 53-percent voting block, which is strong enough to block any attempt by minority owners to seize control.

But the minority owners that make up the other 47 percent are locals, some of which have owned a stake in the club since the beginning. So does Kevin Johnson need to come up with $500 million or more to match/beat the Seattle offer? Or can the majority interest in the Kings be bought by itself?

The team carries a ton of debt. $77 million is still owed to bond holders for the 1997 loan that saved the Kings from leaving for Nashville. There are also loans with the NBA that have to be accounted for and the numbers on them vary from between $100 million and $150 million. So the Maloofs take of this prize really isn’t $500 million. It is 43-percent of the remaining money once the bills have been paid.

That makes the figure to purchase the Maloofs portion of the Kings somewhere between $117-$139 million upfront and another $75-$100 million in long-term, but low-interest debt. Add in another $50 million for Hernreich’s portion or even less for Bob Cook’s 7 percent sitting in bankruptcy and you own yourself controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings. Now I don’t have that kind of cash hiding under my pillow, but for a billionaire trying to get into the high-stakes game of the NBA, it’s not a huge pull

I think the chain thus far has been:

1. Hansen ownership group kicks over an initial deal
2. Maloofs give a tentative ok
3. Reports emerge that Kings are being sold
4. Maloofs freak out
5. KJ press conference saying Kings are for sale but nothing has happened yet.

They just made ridiculous demands with the companies. I forget what exactly but I think it was along the lines of "we want a bunch of free poo poo" or "we want this all heavily discounted". Wasn't really a fight, just negotiations that probably made the company reps want to pull their hair out

As someone who is a fan of 2 expansion teams (Suns, D'backs) and 2 relocated teams (Coyotes, Cardinals) I don't care 2 craps about things that happened in Winnipeg/St Louis/Chicago. I hate that the Cardinals kept their name when they moved here. Sure you can see Cardinals in the PHX area, but its certainly not something associated with it. If they wanted to be named for a non threatening bird it should've been the Wrens or Roadrunners.

I always think its dumb when Im at a Cardinals game and see Dick "Night Train" Lane in the ring of honor, Im sure he was great an all, but what the hell do I or any Phoenician know about him? There's no connection. I see people taking pictures of the Aneas Williams and Pat Tillman signs, not the ones from Stl/Chicago.

Sports are one of the last great bastions of civic pride. I wish there was a gentlemen's agreement to leave record books, colors and team nicknames with the cities that get left behind, just so if luck every does turn around and they get another team, they can use that history. I.E. if Virginia Beach ever did somehow get a team, Id hope they'd be called "The Squires."

Or as Atom & His Package more succinctly put it "there's no Jazz in Utah and few lakes in L-A."

I can see why people in Seattle were/are disgusted by the shared history thing, but I think people in Oklahoma City were pretty uneasy with it too. There's nothing for the Thunder fans or the Thunder organization to really say or do about it. Giving out Detlef Schrempf bobbleheads or hoisting a 1979 Championship banner in OKC would be pretty silly and pointless antagonistic. I lived in Oklahoma for 3 years after the Thunder arrived, and I think people felt guilty. That didn't stop them from being excited about a pro sports team showing up, which I don't hold against them.

Up until their disastrous 17-win season, the president of the Kings refused to discount Kings tickets. Even for promotions. His justification was that discounting tickets would cheapen the premium brand that the Kings were trying to project. To him, empty, unsold seats did less damage to the team than selling the seats at a discount. It wasn't until they were losing insane amounts of money and taking on massive NBA loans that they decided they finally need to change their stance and fire that guy. Now the team runs nice promos and discounts all the time just to get people in the arena. Also this was about the same time they finally got a beverage deal and stopped being dicks.

You could blame this on just the former president, but BRANDING they've been pushing since forever. They really are mini-Trumps
