Looking at around -25 C feeling like -34ish tomorrow morning. Not really that cold considering in a few weeks or so we will have at least 2 weeks of minus 20-30 degree highs. A week ago it got up to 1 degree out and I didn't even bother putting on a sweater to go outside to smoke. The problem this winter is the -20 one week to plus 2 the next, that happened last week and back to -20 just destroys our roads.

It's only 35 C here in Western Sydney today but relative humidity of 50% is making it less bearable than last week's 40+ temperatures. Tomorrow's forecast is for 42 C - I hope like gently caress that's not 42 and humid.

-22 is pretty cold, but not really horrible. I don't consider it cold until the air actually hurts my skin on contact, and that's usually -30 or lower. I can be outside in a skirt for some time in -22 before I get uncomfortable. It's wind that really makes cold awful. If the air is perfectly still and you have your own radiant heat lingering at the surface of your skin, you can hardly feel the chill, or you can feel the heat of the sun if it's clear.

BoM is predicting that monsoon season will finally hit the top end this weekend, which should end the heat wave. Tomorrow's likely to be absolutely horrible, though, due to the humidity more than the heat. Dew point is sitting at about 20 C here at the moment, making it pretty uncomfortable even though the temperature's dropped to just below 30 C. I'd never survive in the tropics.

Enjoying a nice flu induced dream this morning when my weather radio wakes me up, a sound I haven't heard in a very long time. Winter Weather Warning, heavy snow and freezing rain. I was excited when I heard the snow part but then the freezing rain just ruined it, then I remembered it's been raining for the past 2 days. It's going to be a long night and I expect being called out (volunteer firefighter) for at least 1 car wreck

I work in the south of England, and everyone at school is panicking because we're in a Red Snow Alert! Maybe up to 4" where I live, which is rare indeed. I'm originally from the northeastern US and laugh at 4" but here it's serious business, fair enough. My husband is incredibly excited as he'll finally get to use the snowshovel he got for Christmas in 2011! He's 45, and about three years ago was the first time in his life he saw snow deep enough to leave footprints in (he's from Kent near Dover). I'm not excited about shovelling, having had to dig out my share of cars by myself in years past, but I'll let him enjoy the excitment. The first snowfall of the year is always grand. It also means possibly a day off university, yay! I feel like a little kid hoping like crazy for a snowday (right now it's overcast, and spitting down a bit -- I had my fastest commute ever because everyone's fled home early or else to buy up all the bread and milk in the shops.)

But yeah I'm about 15 miles inland from the coast in eastern Dorset and yeah we're supposed to get pasted with 4 to 6 inches like you say. Over on the other side of the world the Aussie heat death is giving us one final burst here in Sydney. It's 10.30 in the morning and already 33c. It could reach the low 40's. At least the heatwave is going to break tonight and it's forecast for rain over the weekend. I just hope there's enough rain to help with the bushfires.

Jesus. Sydney forecast has just been updated to 44 C for the city and 46 C out here in the west. Relative humidity is pretty low, which is great for personal comfort but terrible in terms of fire danger. The sooner this storm and southerly buster roll in this evening, the better. Link to Sydney observations for anyone who's not terrified by the fact that those revised maximums are likely to be wrong as it's already over 40 C in many parts of Sydney and it's only just after mid-day. http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/observations/sydney.shtml Lolie fucked around with this message at Jan 18, 2013 around 01:23 |

Just refreshed the observations and it looks like temperatures are starting to drop near the city. Let's hope the change is rolling in early. Edit 2. Beautiful fluffy white clouds are forming quickly here now. It's still 40 C in the shade on my front verandah but the cloud cover should drop the ambient temperature pretty quickly. Edit 3. Despite all my griping, the temps we've been enjoying (more or less, the ice and snow are melting away and that's good enough) in Omaha are pretty much bullshit. We're usually safely below freezing in the Jan/Feb part of the year and it's been in the 40's and 50's.
