So, I just had spinal surgery. This will be my recovery log till I can be 100% again, then I'll get swell and swole for you. A bit about me: My name is Kevin, I am 32 years old, for most of my life I’ve had pain from sinus injuries and a back injury. The past two years have been bad and good; things got debilitating but I was finally able to get surgeries to correct both my sinuses and my back. I was hesitant to make this blog due to the fact that I will not be lifting until I heal, but that also makes my toxx a lot more achievable unless something bad occurs to stall my recovery. Medical details: My L5-S1 joint had a huge herniation that was severely pinching the nerve. The injury was so old that it started ossifying, or growing bone in the center. This only typically happens with very old spinal injuries as it takes time for the bone to grow into the cartilage. The surgery was a microdiscectomy, which removed the herniation only. This is a conservative treatment compared to Spinal fusion, where they remove the whole pad and fuse the joint, or joint replacement, where they put in an artificial disk, usually two pieces of metal with a ball joint. Hopefully this will be enough to fix my back and allow me to get back to school, job, and the reason I’m here - the gym. Recovery plan: I am under orders to lift no more than 20 pounds, and I can tell you right now, I cannot even lift myself out of bed without my sexy swole wife squatting and lifting me up. I am optimistic about my recovery, but am required to start physical therapy at week 6. I am encouraged to walk as much as I can, but no more than a few minutes at first, and to sit for less than 15 minutes at a time. My My next goal will be to lose some chub, especially around my moobs and spare tire area. I don’t know what to expect for my recovery, this being the first and hopefully last time my spine is dissected, so this will not be a toxx, just a personal goal. A big chore for me will be to log my food intake every day. Being a gourmand and general lover of good eats/drinks, it’ll be tough to tone down my intake and log all the stuff I consume. The wife says this is the most key factor for losing the chub. Before the surgery I had been working out off and on as my pain would allow, so I was a bit fit, but not as much as I would like. I have before and after pictures from the surgery, it’s not much to look at since it’s a small incision, but rest assured, it was debilitating pain before the surgery, and on day two of recovery it’s even more so… things will get better, and that’s why I’m here. Now some pics. Right before surgery: ![]() Surgery results: ![]() I have a back brace/girdle to help me stand. ![]() Bonus flex pics: ![]() Wife insisted on taking these pics as I was getting out of the shower. P.S. My wife is on here as Nendil, you might've seen her log around.

Heh, wife wanted me to flex but I was nekkid in the shower, so I did the best I could. The other one was after the surgery, you can tell by my different clothes and medical bands... and the stoned face. So Lucy and I are trying to figure out how to update this blog until I can actually eat normally, and move normally. Right now I consider progress being able to empty more than half my bladder (due to surgery drugs) Pooping is even more difficult, and painful as hell. I was thinking maybe a log of how many minutes I'm on my feet during the day, I can buy a pedometer app or something for my phone. Also I was thinking about filling some socks with quarters and doing some light calisthenics lying down. I wiggle my feet and move my arms, but I could use some light resistance <5lbs. Does anyone have any ideas? Be reasonable, remember, I'm missing a piece of my spine, and it feels like it too. First shower today since surgery, got to shave and everything, felt AMAZING! now to bed. Cat did a cute thing today, she's concerned about me. ![]() Wish she had been by my side here too:

Thanks ladies for all the ego boosts concerning the shower pics, I do not feel sexy at all right now. Also thanks for all the support for Lucy, she really appreciates it. Ok, so I logged my food today, and I got a pedometer for my phone, but it EATS the battery, so I'm buying a cute little USB one that looks easy to use. Lucy went to the bank and got me quarters to stuff into socks so I can do some bed exercises, pictures soon. I walked around 300 steps today, which includes up and down stairs. It also apparently included my epileptic like fits. I assume these are caused by my nerves being all jangly due to my back injury being over 2 decades old, basically my spinal nerves through the L5-S1 were in a crowded hallway most of my life, now they're in a football field; they spaz out occasionally like a popcorning rabbit.(Painful, but Still counts as exercise :-P ). ![]() I found I can roll on my stomach, then onto all fours then up on my own, it's tough, but not wanting to pee in a medical thing where you sleep is a big motivator... also the better food is downstairs. Wife has to work during the day so I can be pretty much self-reliant now, except bathing and some other things. Pain is still very bad, medication seems to help

Contrast between disabled and becoming able feels huge. Cats cuddled in my lap today when we came home, Lucy went to the gym. Cheeto was makin biscuits on my belly when Kiki bit his tail making him freak out which made me freak out then launch him off me cause of the pain... noone was seriously hurt, and both cats became butties again. They like me so much they usually don't fight when cuddling with me, Lucy doesn't seem to have that effect on them. I walked around 1000 steps today and it felt pretty good, it was cold outside. ![]()

I agree, it's one of the nicer ones in Marin which has no shortage of nice trails. Ok, so I wasn't planning to but I murdered and ate my TOXX; I went on a 3 hour hike today (around 3 miles total)... normally the hike should only take 45min-1 hour, but I'm still zombie shuffling around. I now need to create some new goals, non-lifting and non-bending kinda goals. I'm also wondering if anyone in the SF Bay area would like to meet up for hikes in the coming weeks. I will need a ride since I'm not supposed to be driving, and I'm not supposed to be sitting more than 15 minutes, which would mean the hike needs to be up here in Marin (unless you have good reclining seats then I can sit a bit longer), PM if you're free any day of the week at any time (sunlight time) and want to go for a hike. As a bonus I'm a good photographer and can take a decent camera to take some really nice shots of you to put on your Here are some nice shots I took with my crap phone cam, Roommate is in a couple: ![]() This is the Tennessee Valley Trail nearby, very pretty right now due to rains and the winds having blown out all the particulates and fog in the air. There's a horse ranch at the trailhead where a coyote was busy digging up rodents. There's nice old Eucalyptus along the trail mixed with native scrub, it's quite fragrant right now. The beach like many in Marin is pretty epic, I tried to convey scale with Nick (roommate). There are also many cozy niche among the cliffs to sit and enjoy the beach, it's well worth the time. My mobility feels almost normal, I can bathe, I can dress myself, all body functions fine. Here are some update photos of my body, not much has changed. My posture is better and I guess that makes me suck my stomach in more. I'm not forcing it, I literally have to keep my knees and hips at certain angles for my spine and that makes me look slimmer I guess. I haven't made it to the gym to weigh myself so can't say I've lost weight, doesn't feel like it. We took the bandage off my back yesterday, turns out the incision is about 4 inches long and vertical, I thought it'd be smaller and horizontal. I really need to build some definition in this pasty mass. ![]() So I haven't been eating the best (healthy but not good balance), I should really find some higher protein lower carb foods to eat regularly: ![]() I also ate a Tofurkey sausage thing that was dubious. Any ideas for a new toxx? Maybe do the cardio trainers at the gym, or hike on a regular basis (3-5 times a week), or use this recovery time to adjust diet to lose weight (dropping ~15 lbs would be ideal for my body type and size)? I got my new pedometer and tried it out today. I went to the gym with Lucy and did Elliptical for 1hr, the total distance was around 4 miles, I think it was too much because my right leg went dead for about 20 minutes after I got off... it was probably dead for a while on the machine but I didn't know it. Also my knee feels wonky and messed up. I think I'm gonna switch to the treadmill because I plan to build a treadmill desk at our new place and I hear (from Lucy) that other people have dead feet/leg problems using ellipticals. If you've never heard of treadmill desks you should look into them on google, I'll write about my experience when it happens. My new pedometer needs to be set to the right stride distance and such, cause it read 50 minutes of exercise for the whole day and only about 3 miles of walking. I tried to take a picture of the Elliptical machine but it resets when you slow down or if you continue past 30 minutes... WTF? The nurse at the back clinic was wary of how fast I'm recovering and warned against longer hikes or such. I do feel really beaten up after a long walk, and it hurts, but I've been in pain so long this feels like nothing. Here's a pic of me at Tennesee Valley beach from the other day, I don't really know how else to prove I beat my toxx. Here's what the pedometer software spit out, along with some delightful Engrish when I installed it. Also here's my food record (lacking a lot of protein again): ![]() Recovery isn't so bad, kinda boring, my day mostly consists of moments like these... Kiki also looks concerned about my long walks: ![]() Had the stitches removed yesterday, the incision is only about 2 inches vertical now, it looks very clean. Here's a pic of the removal, and a pic today, feeling pretty good.

Congratulations on the speedy recovery -- it looks like you're finding that balance between pushing yourself forward and pushing yourself too hard (I always opt for the latter, usually with piss-poor results and/or injury). Weight-loss toxxes aren't allowed any more, so I'd go with either longer/more difficult hikes (Mount Tam?) or a plan to lift weights, as okay'd by your doctor.

Hey guys, pretty tired tonight. Gonna be a pretty vanilla post. I still need to eat more protein and less junk. I will work on that. I think a good toxx might be to list a known trail that is tough and work up to hiking it all the way. I did about 2 miles on a treadmill at the gym and it kicked my butt, I'm pretty sore. I had a bit of dizziness and moonlegs after getting off the machine, but nothing fell asleep like on the elliptical. Lucy was saying that it is a common problem for people using ellipticals because it locks certain movements like the feet, which for some people can cause nerve or circulation issues... I never had a problem till after the surgery, but I will definitely be doing treadmill from now on. Voodoo Doll posted:Honestly, thanks for posting your incision and stitch removal pics. Been Packing up for our move hopefully in February, most of these boxes are books, I count this as exercise. I found this little guy on a shelf guarding some cables, meet origami Yoda. ![]() My wife and I have planted fishtanks, done in a mostly Amano Nature-style. We have been in the hobby for a few years and it brings us a lot of joy. We had to downgrade after our last move and currently only have 4 (poorly-maintained ) nano tanks totaling less than 20 gallons. We previously had a lush 30 gallon corner tank, and an old 55 gallon show tank, I miss them dearly. ![]() Lucy wanted me to take a couple shots of the new fishtank I'm making for my surgeons office. He had this sad little betta fish swimming around in a mason jar sized tank, so I'm giving the little guy a jungle of fun. All the plants are real, it has hardwood and stone hardscape with a mix of aquarium plant soil and sand. It should be a mostly self-sustaining low-maintenance tank once the plants get established. Might put in some little buddies for the betta. Bettas are friendly if they're well fed and the other fish have places to hide. We keep a betta in our community fish tank and he's a good pet. Just planted and arranged everything in this little tank yesterday, so in a couple weeks the water quality should be good to go and the plants should be nice and rooted. I'll update more when I plop the betta into his new home. ![]() Went out for some amazing Mexican food yesterday. Best stuff since living in San Diego and LA, they have 3 locations in Marin, Mi Pueblo Taqueria. I had 3 lengua (tongue) tacos and 1 fish taco, Lucy had a shrimp dish Camarones Colimas. Dinner tonight was great, pork chops, veggies, potatoes (ate only half) and unfiltered wheat ale from Moylans. ![]() Bear with me, I'm still getting used to having to log food and take my pedometer everywhere. Tonight I did a lot of moving around in house, up and down stairs etc, packing boxes and such. I also went to the gym and did treadmill for an hour. Forgot to add calamari to the list, and a bite of French silk pie (waiting for me in the fridge).

Here are my Exercise and Diet records from the 25th. I'm getting jealous of Lucy and Nick because I can only walk and do chores for exercise right now. I am proud of how many boxes I'm filling for our upcoming move, and the dishes around here are now usually clean. ![]() Went on a nice hike at Bodega Bay with Nick. I took these with my compact that does pretty good in-camera panorama stitching. Here are some highlights: The first is the only pic of me (it was cold), followed by a stream from a lagoon, a driftwood lean-to, and a surreal sunset. Here are a panorama of the stream, pan of the rocky bits, and a pan of the woody bits. Here is a vertical of Nick on a rock, and Nick trying/failing to deadlift a waterlogged log. ![]() If you want to see some more nice pics, here's the Album. For the dough I mixed all of the flours I had left, whole wheat, all purpose wheat, purple corn, glutinous brown rice, millet, and gluten (I usually grind my own flours from whole grains then freeze it). I then mixed the flour with eggs and sour cream to make a quick enriched Pasta. It was a super delicious pasta dough, Nick and I wanted to eat it all raw. (I still have a lot of flour left, so I'll be whipping up another batch soon, and probably trying my hand at ravioli, linguini, and lasagna... it's a good pasta dough.) He's called Cheeto because when I found him 13 years ago he was literally a street kitten, dark and tarry and shaking. After my friends and I cleaned him up he was really shy and tiny, he fit in the palm of my hand from one end to the other and looked like an over-inflated cheese-puff. So, my PT appt. is Tues. the 19th, I'm looking forward to it. Wife and I went to the new Gym today and had a good time... as good as a vanilla treadmill experience can get (for me, she got to do squats and deadlifts *jealous*). It's a very large facility and very modern, I look forward to using all the nice new stuff and using their jacuzzi (cannot right now due to incision recovery). ![]() So I made another batch of dumpling filling and dough, this time I used beef instead of pork... I care about what is in my food so whenever possible I go back to roots and do the basic steps myself like grinding my own flours, grinding my own meats etc... The beef I used is Chuck Roast, I carved it myself and ground it. The dough is a mix of flours, some of which I ground and froze. Some flour is Bobs Red Mill (next best thing to DIY), the mix is listed in a previous post, it's a very high protein and high fiber/nutrient dough. Don't be alarmed by the speckling in the dough, that's purple corn, it has more antioxidants than Blueberries and many other foods, it is also delicious. ![]() Wife made some potstickers for Chinese New Year which we brought to our family gathering, and which our roommate loves. I greatly improved the filling by just winging the recipe, but it still needs a bit of improvement (always room for that). Going to make pierogis tomorrow. I plan to make another batch of dough and make some ravioli soon too. Kiki loves the fish, Lucy loves the Kiki. Happy New Year!

I'm doing great as far as how I normally feel. My body still reminds me of my limitations, and I'm definitely way more out of shape right now due to being sedentary a lot and not focusing on my diet. Tonight we went to the gym, I did about 2 miles on the treadmill while reading the manuals to our used craigslist - washer and dryer. It was a boring read, but I now know how to clean a vent and many other important things about those appliances I never knew. I did 12 laps or so in the pool, then sat in the hot tub for a bit. 2 breast stroke 2 side stroke 2 front stroke 2 backstroke 2 breast stroke 2 side stroke (this is also how I typically start my evenings with Lucy )Swimming feels amazing, my back does not bother me and it's easier to tell if it is getting weak. When doing normal activities it's hard to tell, and pain sneaks up me. I'm being pretty productive around the house, I installed a modular closet for us, and many other things here and there. PT appt next week Wed., this Wed. an Electrician, and plumber are coming to do endless house stuff... it'll slow down, at least it gives me something to do.

It's great to hear that things are working out with the working out! What gym up in RP has a pool? I lived there for ~6 years and could only find the pool at SSU to use. If you need other house-related service people let me know; I've met a staggering number of folks over the past three years of owning my own company, and have used a number of their services. Glad to see the update, man.

I could use some help hanging shower doors, if you have free time I'm sure with your deadlift stats you could do it easy. I'll send you home with some pierrogis. Last night I did 2 miles on the treadmill at 15 min. Per mile. Then I did about 30 laps in the pool, or 15 if you count a lap as there and back. Edit: Made a fresh salad last night with a Saladmaster spinner I got off Craigslist, and today I made fresh bread, both healthy... I'm still fat though.
