http://www.fuel.tv/bestofpridefightingchampionship/![]() This week is as good as any to start, with Nog/CroCop as a featured fight. Our friends at FuelTV have helpfully included a channel guide at the bottom of that page, so that should be your first check. But kensei, what the hell is Pride? Why do I care? My friend, Pride was a Japanese fighting organization that featured freak show match ups with widely ranging weight classes and no athletic commission so steroids and uppers were rumored to be wide spread. Hell yeah, PRIDE! That looks like a good line-up to start things off. I always forget about Fuel unless there are prelims on it because it's not HD and

Another cool thing is Hammer House guys flinging themselves into submissions for the promise a paycheck. We were watching old HUSTLE on IRC and there was a scene where Mark Coleman was sleeping on the street, mumbling "Family!" over and over again. One guy asked if it was a documentary

One thing that should be noted about Pride was its extravagant production value. An entire Pride PPV could last up to 4 - 5 hours because it consisted of not only the fights, but also an opening ceremony featuring a man (Nobuhiko Takada) wearing a diaper hitting a gigantic drum, while all of the fighters on the card were introduced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UXu7a1tJ6Y - Pride Shockwave 2006 Opening Ceremony Following that, there were intros (or "VTRs") before every fight that showcased the fighters, such as this one with Ken Shamrock vs Don Fyre, and one of my favorite intros, Wanderlei Silva Vs Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRWJBFnaRMM - Ken Shamrock vs Don Frye - Pride 19 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcybkaN2Zqk - Wanderlei Silva vs Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic - Pride 20 Sometimes fighters did entertaining walkouts, like Akihiro Gono at Pride Bushido 12, or Kazushi Sakuraba, who constantly came up with entertaining walkouts, at Pride Final Conflict 2003 when he came out as Super Mario. Listen for Lenne Hardt, who announces the fighters as they walk out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOXNOX1NFqs#t=142s - Akihiro Gono vs Gegard Mousasi - Pride Bushido 12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMziM0FbiIQ#t=282s - Kazushi Sakuraba vs Kevin Randleman - Pride Final Conflict 2003 At the end of each fight, the winner was handed a trophy and a giant novelty check, before they walked backstage and the next fight's intro was set to begin. Usually it was limited to DVD releases, but sometimes you would see backstage footage before or after a fight, but when we did get backstage footage, we got gems like this one with Mark Coleman yelling at himself after his loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Pride Total Elimination 2004 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oCnqy8Klaw All in all, these PPVs were very time consuming and enduring, as anyone who's sat through an entire DREAM card knows, since they are very similar in production style. When these PPVs were broadcasted in North America, they were tape delayed and heavily edited due to time constraints and supposedly music rights, so a lot of the stuff I just mentioned, including all of the fighter intros, were cut out, in favor of showing Bas Rutten, Stephen Quadros, or Mauro Ranallo talking. Unfortunately, the FuelTV and Fox Sports broadcast of The Best of Pride are even more edited, so you'll probably only see the fights themselves. To cap off everything I wrote, watch this interview of Wallid Ismail being interviewed by Stephen Quadros and watch some cool fights on The Best of Pride: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cuM3WneAZ0

My favourite VTR is still the one they did for Fedor/Crocop. I dunno if it's the Terminator music or what, but I still get goosebumps watching it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N78SuVHM9CM (Also you can totally tell that they really wanted Crocop to win that one, lol)

to paraphrase someone from here from years back, Crocop v Fedor was super dope because with the intro promos and run up the fight wasn't about the heavyweight title as much as it was Crocops dead dad. i remember watching it like halfway in on one of those Pride recap shows on Fox Sports Net not knowing who either dude was and rooting for Mirko to beat Fedor. the world would be a better place if that had been the outcome

Anyone who has ever watched Pride knows that some of the best fights of all time involve James Thompson. http://youtu.be/vQdqQsivA4U His first fight alone has been credited with bringing more people to MMA than any other fight.

They even have their own streaming software too.

This was posted in another thread, but the UFC has put up Rampage Jackson Vs. Ricardo Arona from Pride Critical Countdown 2004 here: http://www.ufc.com/media/ufc-pridec...kson-arona-free Also, if you're unable to catch Best of Pride on FuelTV, there are full episodes of it on UFC.com. I recommend checking out Best of Pride 109, in particular Mirko Cro Cop vs. Alexander Emelianenko, which ends in Alexs getting kicked in the head with a left kick, then proceeding to fall over like a tree. http://www.ufc.com/search?filter=Me...y=Best+of+PRIDE - List of Best of Pride Episodes http://www.ufc.com/media/ufc-bestofpride-109 - Best of Pride 109 As an added bonus, this is from the behind the scenes footage of Fedor watching his brother get a foot to the face.
