ARE YOU TIRED OF BEING A WEAKLING?

DO YOU HAVE SO MUCH BLUBBER THAT ROLLING DICE IS DIFFICULT?

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LOOKING LIKE THE CHARACTERS YOU CREATE?

DO YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO LIFT A SWORD, MUCH LESS SWING IT?

DO YOU WANT TO BE A MUSCLE WIZARD?

GOOD JOB FAT TRADGAMES GOON. YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE. THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE WE GET UP OFF OUR LAZY ASSES AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT HOW FAT AND WEAK WE ARE. THE GOONS IN TFLC HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR A LONG TIME AND HAVE A LOT OF GREAT ADVICE. I AM GOING TO ADD MY OWN SAGE ADDITIONS TO THIS THREAD AND gently caress this caps thing is getting old. Let's get back to regular posting.

How do I start out?

Many of us are here for different reasons, but a great number of you are just starting out. That's at once the hardest and easiest place to be. It's hard because you have to build your discipline out of nothing. It's easy because, barring any health issues, I can tell you what you need to do. Before you consider dieting, before you start talking about gym memberships, start with Couch To 5k.

Couch to 5k is brilliant because it's simple to follow and self-paced. All you need to do is get out and moving three times a week. This is a realistic goal for nearly anyone (seriously my friend has a kidney transplant and an autoimmune disorder and she's doing it). They even have an app for your shiny smartphone - or download Runkeeper and have it keep track for you! (And you can be my friend on Runkeeper, and that would be awesome!)

Couch to 5k is a 9-week program, so it will take you about a month and a half to complete it. By the end, you will have become used to actually working out, and you will feel better. Oh, one piece of advice: barring health issues, DO NOT SKIP DAYS OR FALL BEHIND. YOU WILL REGRET IT.

I'm a bit more in shape than that. What should I do next?

Well, my nerdy friend, the goons have you covered. That hot little link right there is a Quick Start Guide to things like fixing your diet, working out, and logging. It's all pretty much summed up by our benevolent lord Shine:

Shine posted:

Eat a protein.

Lift a thing.

Seriously, though, if you want to lose weight, lift heavy things.

What is this thread for?

This is a safe place for us to get together, talk about getting fit, celebrate our victories, encourage each other through defeats, and generally kibbitz about how we're all going to be swole sooner than later. I highly recommend that, if you want to participate, you do two things:

1. Set a goal.
Couch to 5k is a great goal. If you're ahead of that, but you haven't set a fitness goal before, set a short-term goal. New Year's resolutions suck because a year is a long loving time. Set a two- or three-month goal first. Make it reachable.

2. Post a lot.
No, really. Community helps a LOT when you're getting moving. You'll find that there are days when your motivation to go jog is to brag about it in this thread. You'll make friends and learn all sorts of amazing things about your body. It's fun!

In the end, you're ahead of the rest just for trying to get in shape! If you like, you can also post a personal log with a Toxx goal (like I have), but don't feel compelled to.

FAQ

How do I sign up?

  • Post a short backstory.
  • Post your goal(s). Make them quantifiable and single-event. "Work Out Every Day" is not a good goal. "Run a 5k" is a great goal, as is "squat my body weight."
  • Post your deadline for the goal.
  • Post your "before" picture (optional—but very strongly encouraged. You can hide your face).

Is there a Fitocracy group?

There sure is! Join, get ranked, see how awesome we are!

Hi I'm Captain Foo, and I want to maintain my starting spot on my rugby squad come fall. (First game will be edited in when I have the schedule)

I'm 6'0 ~190lb, and I will be posting in this thread. Of course, it started on a day where I had to abandon my lifts after one set due to the WRONG KIND OF PAIN in THE WRONG SPOT, but due to my lifting schedule I won't be back in the gym until Monday, so hopefully the rest is good and all will be well.

I'm a big nerd, with the bulk of my posts coming in the Trad Games forum(s), much like many of you. If I can do it, you can do it.

Hi, I'm Mr. Maltose and I want to cast Musclemancy.

Already prepped for my Couch to 5k, having to haul my fat rear end between campus and the local theatre (About a mile, definitely going to measure that poo poo asap.) twice a week gives me a perfect stretch of track to walk/jog/run. After I get through that, going to hit some weights with my brother and combine getting less round with filial bonding. I'm 5'10 and 263 pounds as of this afternoon. We'll see how I am after this semester!

Goal 1: Reach ExRx Novice level in at least one lift by April. I haven't lifted a weight in a gym since high school. That's time wasted.

Goal 2: Complete the 5k portion of the Springfield 15k/5k in June. I don't think I can get myself into 15K shape in six months, but I may bump this up if I surprise myself. I'm totally ready to surprise myself.

But they have the soft hearts of women

My name is Arrrthritis, and I want to be a Muscle Wizard.

I started the Couch to 5k program about one year ago (January 21st, to be precise), and I started lifting around April 9th. Since then, I've developed into running 6.6 miles 4 days a week (In under an hour, too!) (Sa/Su/T/H) and lifting the days I do not run (M/W/F). I've been pretty adamant about my exercise routine, the only day I missed was the day I spent driving from Washington State to Minnesota. My diet, not so much. I loving love pizza, man. I ate three extra large pizzas in one night and I was like "drat that wasn't enough."

I'm starting to break out of the plateau I hit when I moved to Minneapolis (around September, when the picture was taken), but I want to make sure that I'm still improving in terms of my running time and distance.

I'm about 6'1", and 177 lbs

I am setting the following goals for myself for March 16th, 2013

  • Perform 4 reps of 55 lbs weights on my Dumbbell Bench Press
  • Do a full set (10 reps) of 40 lbs weights on my Standing Dumbbell Shoulder Press
  • Do a full set (10 reps) of 40 lbs weights on my Dumbbell Hammer Curls
  • Perform 4 reps of 165 lbs on my Lateral Pull-Downs
  • Perform 4 reps of 85 lbs weights on my Romanian Dumbbell Deadlift
  • Perform 4 reps of 60 lbs weights on my Dumbbell Rows (each side)
  • Plank for 3 1/2 minutes
  • Perform a full set of 30 lbs weights on my Dumbbell Bicep Curls
  • Run at 6.4 mph for 55 minutes, then run for 9.0 mph for the remaining 5

I think if I stick to a healthy diet (one containing less pizza) and keep on the track, I should be able to hit these goals no problemo.

e: forgot my bicep curls!

I'll have you know, foxes have the finest call in nature

I am Cyphoderus and I am to become a MUSCLE WIZARD.

This is me, aka The Skinniest:

I weigh 68kg and am 183cm tall; Google tells me this is 150 and 6'0.
The weird thing in my chest is a pectus excavatum, but it's purely cosmetic, no health issues there. I have no idea how it'll look when I get myself some chest muscles.

Backstory: Not a fan at all of sports or running; my only physical merit has been 6 years of on-and-off martial arts (5 of capoeira, and last year I switched to BJJ). At some point, I was training capoeira, hard, 5 times a week. This makes me no stranger to exercise, fatigue, and knowing how far my body can take me. These days are long past. I haven't gone to BJJ since November. All of this was some nice workouts, but nothing that'd make me look swole. Time to change this.

Plan: Haven't entered the gym yet; the plan is to do so on Saturday. My life priority is strength over looks; however, my Right Now priority is looks. From what I've seen, cavefish is a good choice.
My problem is I'm in Brazil and I have no idea what any of these lifts are called in Portuguese, so I'll just have to join the gym and find my way around all the equipment before I can start implementing a goon plan.
I'm also painfully aware that my cardio's absolute crap; to change this, I'll also tackle Couch-to-5k, unless someone tells me it's a bad idea for some obscure fitness reason.

Goal: Er... I'd love to have a lifting goal, but I don't know anything about lifting. Since pull-ups are the coolest, a pull-up goal would be excellent, but I don't know how realistic it is to expect improvements on that front in the couple of months we have for the first goal. Right now I can do One (01) pull-up.
What about 8 pounds in three months? Is that a reasonable weight gain goal for skinny bulk-up? Too low?

We do have Toxxes for our goals, right?

Edit: to do it, do it

TheSoundNinja

My name is TheSoundNinja, and I desire mastery over the Mystical Muscular Arts. When I was a kid (we're talking 15-16) I would walk at least a half mile to school and back in the afternoon, and play Dance Dance Revolution for 5-6 hours at a time.

Being serious for a moment: I have a father who suffers from dementia, and who may or may not have an eating disorder. It may sound weird to mention, but it makes me uncomfortable. He acts like a child and just doesn't eat, snapping at people when they finally force him to have a meal. He's a stick now. He's skinny as gently caress. And that scares me, honestly - I see a lot of who I am today being similar to the good parts I admired from him while growing up. I don't want to be... like he is now. I'm going to become a Muscle Wizard so I can be healthy, and strong; so I don't have to feel like how weak he must feel while he watches everything just go down the drain.

No longer being serious and grim-dark: I also want to cosplay as Josef Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2. I already have a tattoo of the Joestar "Star", so the muscles are the next thing I need!

GOAL FOR March 22, 2013
•Complete Couch-to-5K Canceled until my knee gets the okay from a doctor.
•Perform a set of 5 consecutive Pull-Ups

GOAL FOR June 30, 2013
•Be able to play a 6 hour straight session of DDR or PIU.
•Bench press goal (will set it on or shortly after previous goal)

Edit: had to postpone attempting C25k till the doctor clears me.

Okay so I hope it's okay asking for help here before I nail down what I am going to do about this.

My name is neon, and way back when I was 7-13 I was a competitive swimmer of moderate skill. That is pretty much the last time I have been regularly active. Right now I am a 28-year-old, 5'3", ~230lb fatlady.

Couch to 5k sounds like a great idea that I would like to go with, but I have a problem: I can't really do this outside until probably mid-March at the earliest. I live somewhere very very cold and very very snowy, and while I am certain that this wouldn't be a bar for someone who knows what they are doing, I do not feel comfortable going for jogs when it is 30 below out, bundled up in a parka and snow boots that slash my ankles.

What do you guys recommend if I want to start working on this right now, but must avoid fresh air because that is where the cold demons live?

I would suggest weightlifting first to lose a little of the weight before getting into running. Running can be very taxing on the joints if you're carrying a lot of extra weight.

Okay, that'll work nicely, I'm living at my dad's for a couple more months -- until the snow's gone, give or take-- and he's got some stuff down in the basement. I'll take a look at what we've got when I get home from work in the morning and decide what specifically to do from there. Then once I move out, I can start on the other!

On that note I am going to do my best to touch my toes at work tonight. I used to be pretty drat flexible and while I know I am not going to get that far tonight it will do me some good to try!

Ninja expressed interest in the mysteries of the 5x5 and if anyone else wants to join in, then get involved. You don't need a lot of gear, just a barbell, bench and weights (be safe and practice technique first!). You may need a spotter for squats once you start to lift cars/buses. So let's do this! You can get the gear to do this at home for about the cost of 3 months in a gym, which means big savings! I don't have space in my hipster town house so I'll be joining a gym (off days I might become a spin sorceror).

Hi, I'm Zereth! You may have heard of me from my completely irrational obsession with World of Synnibarr, or my vitriol towards terrible comic Kevin and Kell over in BSS!

I'm 5'11" according to the thing at the doctor's office, and the scale at the gym says I weigh... 250something, I haven't checked in a while. (I've been informed I look like I weigh a good bit less, though.)

I started going about a year ago on the advice of my doctor and holy poo poo I wish I could go back in time and literally drag my fat rear end to the gym years ago and force myself to keep ti up until I start reaping the benefits because I feel better than I have in as long as I can remember!

I currently lift a variety of weights and poo poo three days a week and sit on a stationary bike reading for 35 minutes (recently upped from 30, and it was about 15 minutes on average before the weight room was closed for renovation so I just did bikes every day for a while) when my lovely rear end sleep schedule doesn't decide I'm gonna be up when the gym isn't open! Fortunately, regular exercise helps keep my sleep schedule under control!

GOALS:
  • Make that bike number 45 by April 1st!
  • Go up 10 pounds on everything I lift by uh... June?
  • Make a better weight plan than "whatever the guy at the gym suggested plus situps" (maybe I should do this before that previous one)
  • Look good enough I am willing to post a picture of myself by January 1st 2014
  • EDIT: Continue giving very few shits about how much I actually weigh, gently caress you Wii Fit board you suck t
  • Stop being sore oh god yesterday was my first day back weightlifting in over a month ow ow ow ow ow

If you can do a pull-up, I think getting up to a set of 10 within 4 months would be a good goal. I very highly recommend anybody doing pull-ups read this guide (it's for lat pulldowns, but the same concepts apply to pull-ups and chin-ups). Pull-ups are frequently done with a short range of motion that makes them a less effective exercise, so make sure your pull-ups are hella legit. tl;dr go down until your arms are straight, go up until your chin is well above the bar, and don't swing your hips like a Crossfit weirdo.

Do you have a phone with a GPS or anything else you could use to track a run, or are there any organized 5K's coming up in your area (Google around - most major areas have at least one every weekend)? If so, make a Toxx goal to complete a 5K by, say, the end of February.

Why not hit the weights with your brother now? Doing C25K and beginner lifting at the same time has been perfectly manageable for many TFLC beginners, and if you only have time to pick one or the other, I'd suggest the lifting. We have plenty of former big dudes here, such as Krittick, who often say thing like "I wish I'd lifted weights from the beginning," so they'd have looked even more fit and athletic as they lost weight. Also, being strong owns.

The TFLC sticky can help there. The Strength Standards chart paints out generic novice goals to aim for, and doing them on your favorite lift(s) within 4 months is a reasonable goal.

This might be just the thing I need to get me going, actually.

I used to be a pretty active in martial arts and did a lot of hiking, plus working construction and living in a place with a wood-stove. So, while I would never say I was some paragon of swole, I was in pretty okay shape.

An unfortunate accident and a couple years later, and I can't do any of those activities, or really walk too far without my cane, and am loving dying for a way to work out, but, and it's difficult to explain, lifting and sitting in a chair is loving depressing.

I still do crunches and push-ups, and try to go through basic forms when I can, plus a love of walking, but if anyone has any ideas on something to do, I'd love them. Keeping in mind, that I can't swim, bike, run, etc.

If I can come up with a goal, I want to post a log.

... the "Stumptuous Full Body" is fairly close to what I'm doing right now, actually! I'll try that, although I think I'll keep the situps wait that's what the "ab crunches" part is talking about. How important is the exact order of exercises?

Someone get this hat off me!

I want to be a muscle wizard too. Reading the OP it sounds like beyond the introductory steps it costs money for weights/gym membership. My current 6 month budget calls for drastic cuts in spending as I work to pay off residual college credit card debt and save to buy a new car. I'm 29yrs old, 6ft 215lbs, and don't have medical coverage to get a physicians opinion on things like an annual physical. I'm going to follow this thread for awhile, but I look forward to hearing more about this wonderful program.

I am currently 6'0" and 190 lbs. While I am not necessarily overweight, I am not "in shape" and nowhere near an IRL Muscle Wizard. I want to change this, as well as get to know my fellow nerds and encourage them to get in shape. I have always been within the "healthy" range for weight, but have never been actually fit, or had muscle definition or tone, save when I used to bike for miles. I prefer walking and running to gym and weights, mostly because I'm broke as unemployed gently caress (interview monday!), but I could see this attitude changing.

I really want to have the type of body I can be proud of, instead of one that I'm "ehh" about. It will also really help to have a regular exercise regimen, considering my Diabetic Class.

I'm also "long time lurker, first time poster" type of noob, so please excuse my ignorance on some topics.

GOAL - Complete Couch to 5k workout by end of Feb. (Do I need a toxx? I'm scared of losing ten bucks)

And thanks to Gau for making this thread! I look forward to hearing about everyone's progress, as well as posting mine. Let's all get swole - TOGETHER!

The problem with lifting with my brother is that with work and school we're sort of coming and going schedule-wise for a while, but gently caress it. I'mma lift a weight. Going to try the stripped 5x5 starting Monday, and pick two lifts to get up to Novice level by April. Doing C25K Tuesdays, Thursdays and a weekend day should be doable along with it.

EDIT: The next big organized run around here is in June, but it's a 15/5k. Definitely going to set that as a secondary goal.

I just flipped through this book and I think I'm going to go for this, I don't even need to check weights in the basement, I have wall and floor space of my own, and sacks of heavy things. I will give this a preliminary go from work and come up with a goal from there.

Whatever goal I come up with I am setting the date of it on my birthday, Feb 24.

Someone had mentioned lack of weights before, and I had read this response: Put your rulebooks in a backpack. Bam, like fourty pounds of weight that you can strap to yourself for pushups, pullups, etc

Yeah that's kinda what I was getting at, I have a solid backpack that I can use for this purpose.

For sure. For me it seemed like a daunting task, but once you get going it's a really really fun thing to do.

I just completed what was probably my best run today. I knocked the speed up to 6.3 mph for the first 55 minutes (To the Dracula X soundtrack because I'm a nerd), and then when Dance of Illusions came on I pumped the speed up to 9.0 mph, and after 10 seconds I thought "hell yeah I can go faster" and ran the last 4:40 at 10.0 mph.

The cooldown walk felt glorious, and I can't wait to do my run on Saturday.

So, there's no way in hell I can heft myself into a pullup. Are doing negatives with a chair good enough until I develop the arm strength and lose the weight to do actual pullups?

either that or an assisted pull-up machine until you can do one. Don't forget to keep trying to go back and actually do one, though!

You guys are seriously awesome for showing up here.

In the beginning, it's 90% mental. Your body is capable of a LOT more than you know. What is going to hold you back are the mental walls you hit (but they'll feel physical). When I was doing my Couch25k, I hit a wall around 1.5 miles. There's nothing physical that was keeping me back, I was just tired and being not-quite-half-done wore me down mentally. I had to get through it - that wall is still (sort of) there; I feel a lot better at two miles than I do at 1.75.

You'll figure out your own pace and bumps along the way. It's part of the fun.
