http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20958353 I wont quote the whole article to avoid turning this into a wall of text, but the general gist of the article is that on top of the worrying news about neo-nazi Golden Dawn goons harassing "foreign" looking people, the police have now decided to get in on the action. The article covers 2 cases of tourists (one from Korea, another from the US) that were grabbed on the streets and beaten by police officers on suspicion of them being illegal immigrants due to their foreign appearance (the American was black), and all despite presenting their Korean and US passports. Additionally, an Indian guest lecturer at a Greek university was hauled away under arrest because he didnt have his passport on him despite his colleagues and students explaining who he was to the police. Things have gotten bad enough that the US state department has issued a travel-advisory for Greece warning tourists about "unprovoked harassment and violent attacks against persons who, because of their complexion, are perceived to be foreign migrants". I remember during our last thread about the Golden-Dawn there were a lot comparisons being made to early nazi Germany and fascist Italy. I didnt really buy that solely on the basis of the activities of right-wing nationalists, but when the actual police starts being openly racist and assaults foreign nationals, it certainly sets off some warning bells. Stay safe Greek goons Edit: drat it, forgot a thread tag, but the default one seems oddly fitting.

I've never understood foreign nationals who "forget" their passport. Not that I'm excusing the other things in the article mind you, but thats a pretty big no no as far as im concerned.

The Golden Dawn is also doing borderline-vigilante "neighborhood cleanup" sort of stuff that's popular with skinheads worldwide. Think American History X kind of stuff. However, since they're mostly attacking foreigners, it seems to be going over rather well with the populace from what I've read. Any Greek goons who have seen these fellas close up? I'm curious how they hold up to the individual lens, since the news isn't always accurate. Whatever their motives are, they do seem ultra-right and willing to use violence. Mix in some nationalism and racial ideology and you might just get yourself a recipe for fascism.

give me thread posted:Wasn't there one called exactly this in the more recent Wolfenstein game? This isn't exactly by coincidence. The Golden Dawn in Wolfenstein is likely named after the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, essentially a faux magic order from the Victorian era most notable for Alasteir Crowley being a member. People have tried saying the Nazis swiped stuff from them for decades, most notably the salute. As far as I know, there isn't really any evidence, especially since the salute has been around since the 18th century. Nevertheless, the accusations remain A Thing. I don't think its too much of a stretch to think the Greek Golden Dawn took the name from the Hermatic Order because of this.

Is there any particular racial group or set of groups they're focused on hating? Typically the rhetoric picks and chooses certain targets, I guess because they think "All our problems are caused by these people right here" sounds more logical than "All our problems are caused by all foreigners in general." For example, while the racists in Arizona probably aren't huge fans of Indian and Japanese people, you don't see them enacting laws to target them and keep them out of the country. Also, I can't help but find it a bit strange seeing a nation of mostly olive skinned, black haired people getting involved in an exclusionary racial supremacist movement that strongly ties back to German Nazism. They're not exactly shining Aryan examples of Hitler's youth.

If you are interested in what is going on in Arizona this is required reading: http://harpers.org/archive/2010/07/...-in-the-sonora/ Basically Arizona's approach to austerity has been disastrous much like Greece, They literarly sold their capital building and leased it back for quick cash. Their capital building. It's so odd to me how the US loves to point to Greece as a failure when we have our own little Greece crumbling under austerity with little attention and I don't think it is surprising that you see the same kind of behavior growing out of it. Given the economic freefall going on in Greece we might as well be watching the emergence of a 1930s Wehrmacht style government. Everybody always loves to say "never again" but much of Europe has transitioned back to not really giving a poo poo about anti-semitism anymore.

Cardinal Ximenez posted:You see, Greece is just following German orders... Financially, this is true. No, seriously, German banks are partially responsible for the current economic crisis in Greece. I'm not well informed on the specifics, but I've heard it described as how banks gave loans to people they knew wouldn't be able to pay them back (knowing they'd be bailed out by the Gov't or able to sue and seize assets to get the money back) which, through a series of complicated and incredibly stupid banking maneuvers, set off the crash at investment banks that kickstarted the 2009 recession.
