I'll go ahead and make a new HOF thread, since this news got buried in the N/V thread, and more threads are a good thing! Anyway, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced their 15 finalists for the 2013 class. To get enshrined, a person needs at least 80% of the vote. The Selection Committee can elect a minimum of four men but no more than seven. With a strong class of first-time candidates, this year's ballot is even more crowded than usual. Going to be interesting to see how it plays out. Larry Allen--Offensive Guard--Dallas Cowboys 1994-2005, San Francisco 49ers 2006-07--First-time candidate Jerome Bettis--Running Back--Los Angeles Rams 1993-94, Pittsburgh Steelers 1995-2005--third year on final ballot Tim Brown--Wide Receiver--Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders 1988-2003, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2004--fourth year on final ballot Cris Carter--Wide Receiver--Philadelphia Eagles 1987-89, Minnesota Vikings 1990-2001, Miami Dolphins 2002--sixth year on final ballot Edward DeBartolo, Jr.--Team Owner--San Francisco 49ers 1977-2000--second year on final ballot Kevin Greene--Outside Linebacker--Los Angeles Rams 1985-1992, Pittsburgh Steelers 1993-95, Carolina Panthers 1996, San Francisco 49ers 1997, Carolina Panthers 1998-99--second year on final ballot Charles Haley--Defensive End--San Francisco 49ers 1986-91, Dallas Cowboys 1992-96, San Francisco 49ers 1998-99--fourth year on final ballot Art Modell--Team Owner--Cleveland Browns 1961-95, Baltimore Ravens 1996-2004--first year on final ballot Jonathan Ogden--Offensive Tackle--Baltimore Ravens 1996-2007--first-time candidate Bill Parcells--Head Coach/General Manager--New York Giants 1983-90, New England Patriots 1993-96, New York Jets 1997-99, Dallas Cowboys 2003-06--second year on final ballot Andre Reed--Wide Receiver--Buffalo Bills 1985-99, Washington Redskins 2000--seventh year on final ballot Warren Sapp--Defensive Tackle--Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1995-2003, Oakland Raiders 2004-07--first-time candidate Will Shields--Offensive Guard--Kansas City Chiefs 1993-2006--second year on final ballot Michael Strahan--Defensive End--New York Giants 1993-2007--first-time candidate Aeneas Williams--Cornerback--Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals 1991-2000, St. Louis Rams 2001-04 In addition to the above candidates, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson were nominated by the Senior Committee. The final vote will take place on February 2, and the induction ceremony is scheduled for August 3. I'm actually looking forward to the voting process here--it's one of the deepest ballots in years. The Football HOF has some problems--there's still too much emphasis on skill positions and RINGZ, which is why I think Shields will get screwed again--but it's not nearly the clusterfuck the Baseball HOF is. The minimum requirement of inductees spares us the embarrassment the BBWAA just gave us earlier this week, usually guaranteeing a good time when fans flock to Canton in early August to cheer on their heroes and watch a pointless exhibition game. Now let's go argue about Jerome Bettis.

It might not be the clusterfuck that Baseball's Hall of Fame is but they very clearly have to expand to more than 5 inductees a year especially considering they lump all front office and builders of the game together.

Modell should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He won't however be in the Businessman Hall of Fame.

Cantons in Ohio though. That would be an interesting induction ceremony.

If Modell gets in Browns fans will burn Canton to the ground. Reminder that they had to cancel his moment of silence in Cleveland because it was a lost cause.

No way in hell should Art be getting in. I mean taking the emotion out of it completely, let's look at the Pros and Cons as if I were not a Browns fan. Pros: 1) Did a lot to kick start the TV deals we have today 2) Agreed to move to the AFC allowing the merger 3) Was an owner for a long time. Not sure why this should matter, but I'm not stupid enough to think it doesn't. Cons: 1) 1 championship in 30 years, and not even with "his" people. He vultured it from Paul Brown. 2) 10 playoff seasons in 30 years? Terrible results on the field. 3) Somehow went bankrupt despite always selling out the stadium. 4) Was too greedy to take part in the Gateway project, and instead decided to move the team rather than share stadium revenue. 5) After fighting Al Davis regarding franchise free agency for years, did the same himself, putting the entire league in an ugly position. 6) Fired two HOF coaches in Cleveland. 7) Managed to go broke yet again even after the Ravens won a Super Bowl. Honestly I think that if the NFL wants him in bad enough to put up with the complete cluster gently caress his induction ceremony would become, they would be wise to wait until the year after the Browns have won a Super Bowl. By then all of us who remember "the move" will be dead, or in a much more forgiving mood.

Terrelle Davis is getting closer and closer to the HoF and had all of 4 healthy (and ever more dominant) seasons. Not unreasonable to see Bos get in eventually either. Not saying I particularly agree that either or both of them should or should not get in, but most sports HoFs are far more considering than the clusterfuck shithole that is the BBWAA.

Ogden or There hasn't been an offensive lineman of his caliber up for the hall since Munoz and I don't see anyone else as dominant at their position on this year's ballot, not even Allen or Strahan.
