Sad that the legacy of those shoot style guys in the industry isn't much more than 5 guys performing for 100 people at EVOLVE shows these days. And I guess Asuka.

Hey, sometimes they wrestle in front of 50 people at an open-air market for Daisuke Ikeda's promotion! Oh, speaking of, I almost forgot this picture of El Guapo and the Magician:

Here's Alberto Del Rio "accidentally" removing Rey Mysterio's mask: Sin Cara 1/Mistico/Mystizszszsz: And now Kalisto: I'm sure all 3 were unintentional.

dsriggs posted:Here's Alberto Del Rio "accidentally" removing Rey Mysterio's mask: Yeah, it's a recurring theme. Heels try to remove Face's masks. Eddie ripped Rey's mask to poo poo in WCW, Muto ripped at Liger's mask (Leading to Kishin Liger"), Dr. Wagner, La Sombra, etc, etc. You just see it more in Lucha because 1)More Masks per average, 2)It is held in such higher esteem. Though puro has borrowed some of that esteem as well.

Mil Mascaras did the same to Fenix in the Grave Consequences match, to pretty gruesome effect

I haven't been watching CMLL for that long and my grasp of lucha history isn't that great, but heels tearing at a face's mask and/or ripping it off is very common. Someimtes it causes a match to end in a DQ, other times (like the trios match that ended with Mascara pinning Atlantis on Monday) the heel will rip off the mask after the match is over for heat.

The fact that he's succeeding indicates the masked men aren't expecting to have it actually removed. Heels try to remove masks. Assholes just yank the thing off.

I think part of the problem is that masks in WWE are just pulled over head and not tied on. Since they're stretchy and elastic rather than tied and tightened to someone's head they pull off more easily.

Surprised to see a post 2000 photo that still has that 'look'. Does anyone know what I mean? I guess it's a pre-digital camera that gives it that look. A bit of haze, totally DARK crowd [sometimes], off colour magenta/cyans. I love seeing them when they pop up. I'm not too geared up on the early days of digital/film or anything of course.

Film grain and non-perfect color reproduction is cool and people seem to enjoy it a lot. That is what got Instagram so popular.

I think this mostly looks that way because it's a magazine scan, or at least it appears to be. Or a scan of an actual photo. The raw photo is likely more crisp and could be edited to look "more modern". It is interesting to see the old look of wrestling in general, though. Was watching Survivor Series 96 the other day and there are so many little differences from lighting to entrances to interviews to commentary that really just let you know the era you're in. I feel like WWE has felt like it's in the same era for the past 15 years or so, or whenever all of the PPV sets started being homogenized to look like RAW.
