Someone suggested this needs its own thread and I agree, this shouldn't wallow in the pits of the NCAA offseason because ha ha ha, holy poo poo.

deadspin posted:

Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.

Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.

The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.

So a Mormon has allegedly invented a girlfriend who is always suspiciously absent, what else is new? But this was the big story, Manti Te'o was the next Teddy Roosevelt, yeah? He didn't lose his mom and his wife, but grandma and girlfriend is pretty close.

What would have happened had Te'o won the Heisman? Would there be calls to revoke it? Did the culture of Notre Dame turn Te'o into this or did he tell his friends "Yeah I have a girlfriend in California she's really great" and after repeated requests to meet her, he just shoved her under the tree? How did this get so out of hand?

All these questions and more as we watch this space for the eventual tear-filled press conference.

Sometimes you start getting Heisman consideration, so you create a fake girlfriend that gets into a bad car accident and dies from Leukemia. It's a story as old as the foundations of society...

Alright here's the whole statement:

quote:

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

No matter how much you've won, no matter how many games, no matter how many championships, no matter how many Super Bowls, you're not winning now, so you stink.

So how is this going to affect his draft stock?

rebel1608

I guess I can see why you'd hold off letting that out before the title game because you don't want to distract the team, but then you should probably not have waited for someone else to break the story after that.

I still don't understand. His grandmother was his girlfriend out in California but she died of leukemia in a car accident? And it was all made up? By him? And his university is supporting it? And leading police astray because the kid has some sports/football potential or draft or award or something?
