I hope this post doesn't get me banned. Currently, I have an 840 lb total, which breaks down to a 370 deadlift, 300 squat, and 170 bench press. I don't really track my weight, but go by the way my clothes fit and the tape measure. Later this year (around June-ish?) I'll start worrying more about the scale, because it will affect what weight class I lift in. The last meet I was in, I competed in open weight, and weighed in at 206 lbs. I've put on about 10 lbs since, due an injury (caused from sleeping in a lovely position). Here I am: ![]() You can also see me do a 255lb squat triple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFMoJIrNqIo For toxx, it'll be: 1. 400 lb deadlift 2. 315 lb squat 3. 190 lb bench ... accomplished by May 23 (my 27th birthday). This will give me a respectable 3-lift total of 900 lbs. My goal is to compete in at least 2 strongwoman competitions before December 31, 2013, and 2 sanctioned powerlifting competitions. I also really want to do the Red Bull Crashed Ice competition in 2013/14. Other, less urgent goals, include wearing my so-called 'skinny' clothes (size 8-10 womens), doing a chin-up (I can do negatives!), and competing in another adventure race (did a Spartan race in 2012). In this log, I'll be inputting my lifting and cardio (when it occurs), plus any supplements and nutritional notes that might be useful to include. I'll be taking photos every month to post for comparison, so look for the first ones right after Valentine's Day. Also, I'm on Fitocracy if anyone wants to follow me there; same username as here. Oh also also, I don't follow any kind of lifting program, other than sticking to compound lifts and (usually) high volume. I started lifting in August 2011. I really love that tattoo, the style is awesome. Seeing your strongwoman goals, do you train with implements? I think with your numbers you should have a pretty good shot at being competitive as a HW.

One of the criteria for wherever I go next is access to a good strongman/PL gym (any recommendations in Chicago, Boston, Seattle, etc., I'm all ears!) I'll definitely be competitive as a strongwoman; especially given that the weight classes are usually like, "under 140 lbs" and "141 lbs and up;" I'm already substantially outlifting a lot of the top sponsored female athletes. Eventually I'd like to learn Olympic lifting (I'm a big technique/finesse person, and historically have played skill sports like ice hockey and lacrosse), but am currently without the resources to learn past basic autodidactism.

drat, lady, you got that kind of strength in less than a year and a half of "do whatever" training? That's some raw natural talent there. Dedication, too.

Leah, I'm curious how you got started weightlifting and how quickly you progressed in the begining. It's obvious you have natural talent but did you stall out at any point? If you did, what got you through it?

I firmly believe that the more women there are that can physically overpower men, the better off this planet will be.

primordia posted:Leah, I'm curious how you got started weightlifting and how quickly you progressed in the begining. It's obvious you have natural talent but did you stall out at any point? If you did, what got you through it? I got started after having left graduate school (in 2010) to deal with a major depressive episode; I needed something to supplement work and class while I was living with my parents and recovering. In descending order of efficacy for treating depression, it's been lifting/training --> diet --> therapy --> meds. Weights have done more for me, in terms of patience and consistency and commitment and discipline, than anything else has, ever. I played ice hockey and lacrosse growing up and have thus been able to ascertain / discern injury from soreness (etc.; I maintain this is seriously a HUGELY important element in training/progress, most people don't know how to tell the difference). Anyway, my brother is a body builder and powerlifter, and he's a serious beast; he got me into it, and I enjoyed it a lot. I like physical pain as an experience (never have been self-injuring in any sense, but in the way your body feels after giving every ounce of ability to a race or a lift), and find it rewarding. Plus, yes, I found out I was pretty good at it. Progress has been pretty consistent; I went from a 300 lb deadlift to a 370 lb deadlift in about 10 months (or 6, given that I stopped lifting for about 5 months), 270 lb squat to 300 lbs in about 4 months. I haven't stalled out, but have had a few setbacks. From December 2011 - April 2012, I was out of the gym due to another depressive episode and returning to graduate school. I've been out since mid November 2012 through now (save some basic mobility work) due to a neck/back injury (sleep with supportive pillows, folks!).
