So who is Jim Jeffries? Amazingly, I've never heard of the guy before FX started promoting his new show, Legit, which premieres in about twenty minutes (following Archer). Basically, all I knew about the show was from the ads FX has been running. They don't tell you much except Jim Jeffries is Australian and is a rogue in the FX comedy tradition; even if I had the sixty seconds to spare, they're not even worth posting. So I went to find some of his standup and found his bit about depression (below). I don't know if it's treading any new territory; if you know Louis C.K.'s amazing "Everything's Amazing and No One's Happy" you know the general idea of it. However, the delivery is fantastic; he makes it personal, and the boozy charm in his delivery sells it in a way that's clearly different from Louie but just as effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLjyo51qmrI If you're a fan and you have better material to share, definitely post it, but I think this bit encompasses a lot of Jeffries' seeming range as a comedian: It's blunt, kind of offensive, but also honest and even oddly warm (in its delivery if not necessarily its content), and according to Alan Sepinwall, that's apparently the show's game as well: quote:"Legit" is the story of a selfish pig who decides to do something nice for someone else, but it's not a fairy tale. Jim does the right things, but inevitably for the wrong reasons, and always with a twisted logic that makes it hard to see any of his actions as entirely generous. Here's the deal: Jeffries plays that selfish pig, a version of himself who's a little more down-and-out than he really is. Convinced by his friend Steve (Dan Bakkedahl) that the best way to get out of his head is to do something nice for someone else, Jim decides to take Steve's brother Billy (DJ Qualls) to a brothel and get him laid. Billy has severe Muscular Dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair and a bed. This act of kindness eventually balloons into Billy moving in with Jim, who likes the idea of chicks digging him for being so selfless and caring. In the end, it's FX, and their original programming development is second to none. Their weakest series (quality-wise) of the last five years, the recently cancelled Unsupervised, still had a loose, hangout quality to it that appealed to plenty, including myself. (Even if I couldn't stick with it.) It's going to be worth seeing. Legit airs THURSDAYS at 10:30 ET following Archer. Enjoy! I know nothing of this show either, but I'm in. I would imagine Archer is going to be a good lead in. Thank you for the thread too; much better than I could have done from my phone.

While this show appears to take material from Jefferies' personal life, I'm guessing FX's censors would have a problem with the time

I hope the show is nothing but stuff from his standup brought to life. His has great stories.

Yeah, I'll give a few more go-throughs. Another 'Louie' it ain't so far though.

I liked this a lot, as someone with no exposure to Jeffries' material. It was pretty funny when it wanted to be and hit a lot of the same notes as Louie in terms of being an emotionally focused dramedy.

I thought that was fantastic, actually. If for nothing else, definitely for the car ride montage; great use of "Carry On."

For those of you who haven't checked out his stand-up, I cannot emphasize enough how much you're missing out. His stories are really hard to top. That whole thing was mostly a true story which is what made it so sad and funny. Edit: They did it in Australia not the U.S.

I enjoyed the show. The part with the unintended blowjob on DJ Qualls managed to crack me up longer than it should have. Having heard Jim on Opie and Anthony a few times I knew he was a funny guy and like others said I can only hope the show borrows from his stand up.

Yeah I thought the second episode was great, found myself laughing regularly. Although the shoe-horned in "dreams" monologue/bit from his set was so forced it took away from what is an actually funny bit when eh does it properly. The first episode was pretty good too, but if you've seen him perform you already knew everything that was going to happen so it kind of defeated the purpose.

I liked the second episode a lot. This show has some potential. There is a certain sick sweetness to it.

I really disliked the first episode, and didn't find it funny at all. I'm wondering if it's the fact that I heard it already, or that the whole skit performed by him on stage was actually funnier than it being re-enacted for a show. Regardless, the second episode was a whole lot better and funnier to me.

I gotta say that this show is quickly growing on me. There is a lot of awkwardness and it absolutely tiptoes the line of being completely offensive and insensitive at all times but every episode has left me feeling totally heartwarmed when it was over and I think I'm ready to offically look forward to the next episode.

I liked the 3rd episode a lot. It straddles the line between sick and sweet very well. I think more people should start watching this show.

I really like Jim Jeffries' stand up and this is more entertaining than what the office has become, I'm glad he's getting a run at his own show even if it ends up being short lived.

I like this show. It's both really heartfelt and hilariously sick at the same time. If it doesn't get popular soon it'll end up being one of these shows that gets talked about by a bunch of johnny come lately types who moan that it was canned.

I'll admit I am an idiot and started DVRing this because I thought Jim Jeffries was the dude who plays Wilfred at first, but the show has really grown on me.

Loving this show so far. I'd heard a bit of Jim's stand up over the years and always enjoyed it and the show is hitting all of the right notes for me. In the third episode I knew when the brother got the girl to go home with him that they'd walk in on Jim helping out Billy but the addition of the mother at the same time was icing on the cake that had my cracking up.

I think this show has gotten exponentially better with each episode. The first one worked as a good intro, but couldn't compare to Jim's standup. I loved his delivery of his monologue about dreams in the second episode and the third was pretty much hilarious from start to finish. Here's hoping the show does well enough with Archer as a lead in to stick around for a while (and that it continues the trend of getting better). The only reason I decided to check this show out is because Jim Jefferies is one of my favorite comedians. I think his best bits are the difference between sluts and nice girls and anything about religion.

How did I just find out that this has Jim Jeffries? Somebody showed me a video where he was talking about religion and I was hooked instantly.

Man, that fourth episode was great. It really has just been getting better and better. The other passengers on the plane pitching in was really funny; its interesting how he's translating stand up bits into scenes and externalizing a lot of the asides and jokes to extras. Just caught most of an episode (the one with the black kid of the nursing aide). Pretty stilted, built on a foundation of pretty unexciting comedy. Don't think there's much for me to like here.

The courtroom episode was fantastic. I'll keep watching it because I like Jim Jeffries. It'll never be on the level of Louie but I don't think it's aiming to be.
