SUDA51 HAS A BRAND NEW BAG!

COMING TO AN XBOX 360 OR PS3 NEAR YOU:

Summer 2013 in Japan

Following the cel-shaded art style of Killer7 and No More Heroes is a game with the totally original concept of killing people that kill other people. You are an executioner with the silly name "Mondo Zappa", a 35 year old dude pretending to be Raiden while he goes from place to place in a world where space travel and cyperpunk wetware are common place. Our main man Suda Goichi said that the game plays like killer7 and NMH mashed together (doesn't sound too great, but it'll look cool!). It's also supposed to be about some James Bond poo poo since you're a glorified secret agent slicing up dudes and robot mans to get babes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXAejVR9PSQ

Your slashy beat-em-up man has a crazy-rear end cyber arm that turns into a drill or a shield or a gun for your pleasure.

Suda51 posted:

"It's the story of a man who doesn't show himself much in the public world, but still worms his way into society and mercilessly eliminates the evil dispersed in it. It's a personal story, not one that's conscious of the chaos going on in the real world at the moment, but you might get more than a taste of that in the end anyway."

Sounds like Suda doesn't want to fall back to the not-great combat of NMH or the on-rails shooty Killer7 gameplay! Let's hope this holds up!

Suda51 posted:

"It's not trying to regress into the past. We're trying to make a game that we'd only be able to make right now, at this point in time. The result is seen in our unique high-contrast shading seen in the graphics, as well as the high speed wrestling-like action."

Beat up a zombie man for reasons unknown!

POSSIBLY IMPORTANT CHARACTERS

Brian Roses: Mondo Zappa's bionic boss!

Victor the musical zombie! He can turn into a robot or something, too.

Vivian the bond babe with an excess amount of arms (not seen here) and
Mika Takekawa, your anime assistant!

I'm looking forward to how flashy and over the top the game will look but I'm not betting anything on the gameplay so far. Suda's track record hasn't been great (Lollipop Chainsaw!), but hell if the games he directs don't look cool. Judging by the trailer it looks like there are more than a few MGS Rising ideas being cribbed in there. KILLER IS DEAD may be a total flop, who knows! There's not a lot of solid info floating around about Killer is Dead right now, but I'll keep this OP updated when more info crops up!

I'm looking forward to this! Looks like it's back to a more cerebral Suda experience than the wacky panderfest that was Lollipop Chainsaw. Strangely, the trailer puts me in the mood to watch some Golgo 13.

I have straight to outright dislike a Suda game. They're typically a little repetitive and rough around the edges, but drat if they don't try to do something new and nail the aesthetic. They're all just so drat satisfying.

I need to go finish DMD.

Who knows if it will be an Unreal engine game? We can all abandon ship when more details are released. Could be neat, could be poo poo!

All I ask is that Suda/Grasshopper finally learn something from NMH and Lollipop Chainsaw and fix his drat hack 'n slash gameplay... or get Platinum Games to handle it for him or something. Everything else looks pretty neat.

Hype as hell for this. I've loved all of Suda's games, even if I was disappointed with Shadows of the Damned and the direction No More Heroes 2 took. I'm hoping Killer is Dead has an overall tone more similar to that of Killer7, which is still Suda's best game.

Oh yeah, I remember when concept art for this came up a few months ago. I'm pretty happy that Suda's got another project and that it's something he really wants to do. It sounded like he was forced to or pressured into making an action title when he was involved with EA for Shadows of the Damned. I loved it, but I remember reading that the game started with a completely different concept.

I'm gonna have to agree with the general opinion that Suda does a somewhat poor job with action in gameplay, but I really want to see how he handles a mix of gunplay and melee combat. Part of me wants him to back off from too much action and find that sweetspot closer to Killer7, but you can't beat good gameplay. The gameplay does look interesting and faster than his previous titles. I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I'm excited for this. I love the look and atmosphere of suda games and I thought the combat in NMH was good if a bit simple. I'm glad we're getting a game that looks like it's closer to what he normally does.

Lollipop Chainsaw was way too goofy and stupid for my tastes, I really hope this is more of a creative abstract visceral experience like Killer 7, thats where Suda really shines for me.

edit: Just because I have the feeling this could happen please please please don't let Steven Blum voice Mondo Zappa.

I dunno why everyone gives NMH so much flak over the gameplay. Sure, the levels were boring, but all the boss fights in both games (except maybe Pizza Batt Jr. ) were all excellent. I also thought Shadows of the Damned had pretty solid level direction, and was definitely a step up from NMH in that regard. If things keep trending in the right direction, I could see this being an awesome mix between TPS, hack-n-slash, and Suda's unique style.

Sex_Ferguson

Show me a good time, Jack!

Because the gameplay is meant more for boss fights, but most of your time in NMH is going to be spent cutting up regular jerks and that gets to be very tedious in NMH when nothing new happens about it. In a day and age when people have played good hack 'n slash games like DMC and Bayonetta, NMH has a very lackluster gameplay system that gets very boring very easily when you're not doing boss battles. NMH2 remedied that a bit, but still doesn't really fix the big problems.

Shadows of the Damned is basically RE4's gameplay with more glitches, crappier melee, and an awful upgrade system. Not to mention the boss battles are now the most annoying parts of the game and regular enemies are more fun to fight, this wouldn't be a problem if like every other Grasshopper game there weren't a bunch of boss fights. Level design is nice, but the entire mechanic of the darkness is really obnoxious and only works in a story connected with gameplay scenario at the end of the game.

Mind you both games are very charming and funny, have great music, and voice acting, but they are very lackluster in their gameplay which is kinda important in a video game.

I do hope you can play dress-up with your cyber swordsman! The No More Heroes 2 boss arena mode was pretty sweet, I give the game flak because it's overrated by some folk, usually those who miss the point of the game. If Suda takes some ideas from Platinum for gameplay, this game will probably be good; Suda's always made cool aesthetics.

I like to think Killer is Dead is returning to his roots, that's what it feels like. I think Lollipop Chainsaw, with the amount of promotion it got, was basically to fund Suda's vanity projects. After all, he basically just wrote the cheques for Lollipop Chainsaw while Gunn wrote it.

Don't worry. I have THIS.

I didn't know a lot of people disliked Suda, he's not my favorite director but I feel his track record of Shadows of the Damned, No More Heroes, Killer 7, and Lollipop Chainsaw was pretty powerful. He's never made a downright amazing game that defined a generation, but all of his games are very solid, well programmed, and take a different approach to modern gaming

Interesting that Mondo Zappa somewhat resembles the math puzzle solving protagonist of Flower, Sun and Rain, Sumio Mondo. Unlike with Killer 7, Flower, Sun and Rain is Grasshopper's game so it seems weird to do just a referential name.

Is this running on Unreal 3 again? I do hope the framerate's a little better in the final game, though it wouldn't be a Suda/Grasshopper game without some kind of junkiness.

I think the most understandable story out of all of his games was Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special.

Having played NMH, NMH2, and Killer 7 they all felt like very mediocre rough games. I really didn't care for Shadows of The Damned and I've yet to find Lolipop chainsaw cheap enough to justify buying it. Biggest problem from what I've had with the games is that they're way too forced and scripted. The over-the-topness would be better if they gave the player options like in Saints Row 3, hell making them mostly Sandbox games with a lot of customization would have been ideal compared to the half-assed exploration elements that we got in NMH.

From the sounds of it, the style of NMH and Killer 7 smashed together would probably be similar to Borderlands.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I've also played some of Flower, Sun and Rain, which had a more goofy charm to it than the hyper-violent style of his later games.

I'd also like a return to the style of Killer7, where many of the strange gameplay mechanics are justified in the game's story. There are still aspects of that game that remain unsolvable, without it feeling like it's deliberately withholding information.

Here's hoping it's a game where Suda is actually directing, unlike the past few. Lollypop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned and NMH2 are fun and entertaining in their own right, but they don't feel as inspired as NMH1 or Killer7. I'm liking the art direction so far, but I do have a niggling doubt that Suda might just be trying to emulate Killer7 with it. Hoping it's properly unique, rather than just Suda going through the motions.

Sorry for the semi derail but is NMH2 worth it? I played the first one way back in the day and it was fun but kind of repetetive and boring after a while. I could've sworn they released NMH2 for PS3/360 too but apparently it's still only on the Wii and the only thing they did was re-release a HD version of NMH for PS3/360? Why do even your game releases have to be loving confusing Suda!!!

Anyway, now that it's properly old, I somehow still have a Wii (god knows if it still works though) and NMH2 seems reasonably cheap, would you guys recommend it? Or is it just more of the same and not really worth getting into?

Suda wasn't involved with the NMH HD port at all, that was entirely behind his back. That said, the HD port contains some (most? I didn't play it myself) of NMH2's bosses, so if you don't feel like firing up the Wii for NMH2, you can always just play that. But yeah, if you liked NMH, NMH2 should be right up your alley.

I'd put #2 right on the same level as #1. It's not as repetitive since the jobs are more varied and you don't need to pay money for each ranking fight, and the combat is more varied since you can switch katanas (and therefore fighting styles) on the fly. The tradeoff is that the writing and dialogue isn't as good as the first game, so how much you enjoy NMH2 depends on what you liked most about NMH1.

stay the same never change

The second game also addressed a common complaint about the first--the generally empty, open wold city--by excising it completely. I do think it was something that Grasshopper should have modified in some way, but turning it into a menu wasn't a great solution. I've seen some people praise the "streamlining", but for me, exploring and driving from here to there was a big component of Santa Destroy's character, and it was missing in Desperate Struggle.

That Fucking Sned
Oct 28, 2010

Desperate Struggle had better mechanics, but it lacked a lot of the charm of the first game. I loved how the first game showed you the silhouette of the boss before you began the stage, with their name being whispered in a robotic voice. It builds up your anticipation to fight them, while in the second game the fights are just 'there', and you don't even get to learn their name until after you beat them.

I don't mind the open-world city in the first game, since now that I know that the best way to make money is through the part-time jobs, not the assassination missions, it doesn't take long to get to the next proper stage.

People've said that the open city with nothing to do in the first game is supposed to be a satire. I'd buy that, unlike some of the other stuff with similar thought processes.

I'm a little iffy about Killery is Dead though, it looks very NMH-esque and unlike Killer7 so far. NMH is fine but this is supposed to be a spiritual successor to K7 and all.
