In the near future, a reality TV show called Room 25 goes beyond the limits of good taste in an effort to increase ratings and shock viewers. Candidates are enclosed in a complex filled with 25 rooms, many with unexpected and dangerous effects. They will have to trust each other and work together to find Room 25 and escape quickly. However, some amongst them might be guardians of the prison, waiting for the right moment to strike in order to prevent them from escaping by any means necessary...

Welcome to Room 25. What's Room 25? Good question! It's a board game that I do not own, have never played, am not even sure is available to purchase yet, and only discovered less than 24 hours ago.

We're going to play it.

Room 25 is a pretty obvious homage to the "Cube" movie series, in that it is about a group of captives being forced to go through a heavily trapped complex in order to try to escape. The gameplay revolves around secrecy and simultaneous action choosing. Every turn, the players choose two actions from a set of four in secret at the same time, and then the actions are resolved in turn order, regardless of whether or not the actions chosen are still beneficial for the players to take. Also, in a gameplay decision that will thrill our local BSG lovers, some of the players may secretly be guards that want to kill all the other players. vv

The rules of the game are simple, and are summarized in a very concise, eight page long rulebook that I have handily linked here. If you want to play, please take the five minutes it'll take you to read the rulebook. I'm accepting six players for a game using the Suspicion rules.

If you'd like to play, post here and indicate if you have PMs/leave your e-mail, and list your top three choices for which character you'd like to play (purely cosmetic choice).

The characters are...

THE SCIENTIST

THE NERD GOON

THE DUDE

THE BIMBO

THE COLOSSUS

and THE LITTLE GIRLwith the robot arm

I'll check back later and randomize six players from whoever signs up to play. If you don't get picked, you'll get priority in any future games of Room 25 I run don't worry because I will probably open another game of this if there is demand for it, since it seems like it won't take much effort on my part to run it. Okay, thanks, sign up, bye.

By the way, I have a rules question about the Flooded Chamber. The text reads:

Flooded Chamber posted:

As soon as you enter, this room locks itself from the inside and becomes inaccessible (no one can enter for the rest
of the game). After your second action of the next turn, if your character is still there, you drown.

This means you can (and should) leave the room freely, right? It's just that no one can enter once it's revealed?

Correct. The danger is in looking into another room, seeing that it's ALSO dangerous, then having to move blindly. You can't really afford to move back, since the time limit is always looming. Plus, it punishes screwing up the order of order placement.

Welcome, viewers! Joining us on this EXCITING
season of Room-25 are six fantastic candidates,
hand-picked by the Entertainment Ministry to
provide the maximum in thrills to you, the
audience!

Our wonderful contestants are . . .

Kiranamos, as the Strange, Little Girl
Tekopo, as the Strong, Silent Type
Colon V, as the Socially-Inept Nerd
Indolent Bastard, as the Leading Man
Crackbone, as the Mad Professor
and Gau, as the Blonde Bombshell

Will our intrepid candidates fly, or fall?
Will they become a well-oiled team, or will
tension tear them apart? Which among them are
actually part of our highly-trained Guard Force,
ready to sow dissent and take them all down?

Find out all this, and more, on this season of. . .

ROOM-25

Alrighty. So, I've randomized the list, and have selected the candidates. If you didn't get selected, please feel free to toss your hat in over at Colon V's thread to try to get in on his game. If I decide to start another game while this one's going on, or after this one finishes, I'll be sure to let you guys know through this thread and PM.

Players! Let's set up some ground rules, just to make sure we're all on the same page and things go along without a hitch.

No out of thread communication! Just don't do it.

Secrecy is of utmost importance. Remember that all you are allowed to reveal about the rooms that you peek at using the LOOK action is the room's difficulty level! That means you can only say that a room is SAFE (green) an OBSTACLE (yellow) or MORTAL DANGER (red). You can NEVER reveal the exact nature of the room you observed. Don't try to get sneaky to get around this.

Final action choices must be submitted to me, via PM or e-mail (clockwork.gadget@gmail.com). I'll post the first action of the first player of the round once I receive all action choices. That player will then make all sub-choices required (who they're pushing, which room their viewing or moving to, which direction their controlling, etc.). I'll update saying what happens, and then the next player will be up. If you'd like to pre-load conditional sub-choices for your actions at any time in order to help game flow, feel free to do so. I'm going to try to update as frequently as possible in order to help the thread keep moving, so I'd appreciate if you guys show the same consideration.

Your role PMs will be going out shortly, followed by the first map update.

I hope we all have fun.

Dear Candidates, hello! You have been
selected by the Entertainment Ministry to
be a part of our fabulous show! Broadcast
worldwide in high definition, you will
delight millions of viewers by surviving our
Complex’s deadly traps! You have limited
time in which to escape! Let’s get started!
And don’t forget to smile – you’re on
camera!

You come groggily awake as the artificial voice resonates between the sterile metal walls of the the room you find yourself in. After shaking yourself out of it, you begin to come to terms with the terrible truth: that you are now an unwilling contestant on the most popular, and most horrifying of all the Government's entertainment programs. The program known as ROOM-25. All you've got on you, aside from your clothes, is a note saying what one of the rooms next to your own is. You look around to find yourself with five other candidates, each looking as bewildered as yourself. You know you must guard your knowledge carefully, as any one of these people could be one of the terrifying Guard Force, tasked to make sure you never make it out of here alive. You know you're going to need them, but can you really trust any of them? You may have to, because the clock has started ticking. . .

Sorry, should have clarified. You can post your choice here, and it honestly shouldn't matter too much what order you go in for this first pick, seeing as how none of you have any prior knowledge or anything, but if you guys prefer to pick in order, that's fine by me and entirely your preogative. vv

e: Looks like Colon V has picked his players too! Just a reminder to everyone that didn't get a spot, if I need to replace a player for any reason, I'll let you guys know (at which point it will be first come, first serve on who replaces). Otherwise, you guys will be getting first priority in future games I run. Hope you enjoy watching.

Clockwork, do you want your spectators to keep quiet, or are we allowed to comment on the game?

That is to say, I could understand if you wanted us to shut up so that our choices and comments and conclusions don't unduly influence the players (especially if, say, the spectators figure out who one of the guards is, something like that!), but I get the impression that this is gonna be one of those games that is going to be as much fun to talk about as it is to play.

Up/Down/Left/Right, N/S/E/W, Grid Co-ordinates, whatever works. I don't foresee any of us getting overly confused about which tiles we're talking about, but I can throw column/row designations along the sides of the board if it helps you out.

I don't mind comments from the audience, within good reason. If the players decide otherwise, though, I will resign the decision on audience commentary to them.

Colon V and Tekopo have both received their free starting clues! Still waiting on the rest of y'all.

Reminder tokens are described (kind of poorly) in the rulebook as aids a player can place on any unrevealed room. A player only gets one token, and once it's placed, it cannot be picked up until that room is revealed.

I can see that they would basically serve as helpful reminders of "this was that one room I looked at two turns ago before it accidentally got shifted five squares away" when used in a live playing of the game. Less useful in PbP when you can just read the thread and your PMs again, but still kinda useful.

If I'm reading the rules wrong on this point, please correct me.

Gau has received his free clue. Colon V has placed his reminder token East of the Central Room.

I'll update the map with the reminder token when imgur lets me upload the image.
