Sapperedosio!

Yes, only a year after the previous edition, the African Cup of Nations is back. The tournament actually started yesterday, but I guess when the games are on at the same time as PL matches nobody gives a poo poo. Not that you have missed much since both games ended in goalless draws.

Host
Originally the tournament was to be hosted by Libya but for obvious reason that didn't seem like such a good idea after 2011 so they swapped the hosting rights with South Africa, who originally would've hosted in 2017. So we're back in some of the stadiums that 3 years ago were used for the World Cup, with the final held again in Johannesburg.

Teams

Cape Verde makes its debut at the tournament, after causing a big upset in the playoffs knocking out Cameroon. Other notable teams missing are all-time Egypt, Senegal and both hosts of last years tournament, Gabon & Equatorial Guinea. Last years winners Zambia only just made it to the tournament, beating Uganda 9-8 on penalties in the playoffs. Nigeria and Algeria are back after missing last years tournament. Ethiopia are back for the first time since 1982, they beat their neighbours Sudan on away goals.

A schedule for all games is here, and an overview of the squads here.

Right now Ghana - DR Congo is underway, and I really only made this thread to post about the brilliant haircut of the Congolese goalie:

who only when DR Congo scored the 2-2 (in a very entertaining game btw) and did his trademark celebration, I realized was this guy:

Dude is seriously awesome.

Football hasn't been that great so far though. Doesn't feel like it's the kind of championship it could be.

They switched it from even years to odd years so rather than wait for 3 years for the next one they decided to do two in a row.

Just tuned into Niger vs Dr. Congo and got really excited for a second because there was a little "3-3" up in the corner. But that turned out to be shots on goal. Shockingly, it's a goalless draw an hour in.

Been some good chances. Niger's keeper has made 2 fantastic saves and Niger hit the post I think 5 minutes into the match on what really should of been 1-0. Congo look more likely to score but it's hardly been a thrilling match.

It's just international competition group stage syndrome. Playing to not lose in group stage matches is more advantageous than playing to win with a risk of losing. Things'll heat up in the knockout stages

Apparently Niger got its first point ever in an African Cup of Nations with its goalless draw against Congo DR.

This, and they've probably been even more encouraged to play even more defensively after they saw what Zambia did last year.

I saw a bit of Niger vs Congo DR yesterday and it was absolutely dreadful. The ACN was much more fun back when they had terrible goalkeepers and didn't care about defending.
