As far as I can tell, it's literally a derogatory term for the valuing of artistic integrity in popular music. Am I missing something, or is it really that retarded?

Actually, rockist is a term used for someone who ignores the artistic value in music that isn't rock. They're people who pretty much act like rock and roll was the only important form of music, and anything that came before is ignored and anything that came after is total poo poo. So a common rockist thing to say is that music in the 60s matured as it became more artistic, or for people to say that there was very little innovation in music between 1970-1980.

Additionally, it usually devalues music that isn't some form of rock, i.e. hip-hop or pop music because it "doesn't use real instruments" or "doesn't take real skill" or some poo poo. Usually comes with a tacit approval of bands like the Roots for being an exception as a band with instruments.

Rockists say "Electronic music isn't real music", "rap music? more like crap music!" and other stuff like that. They disregard the artistic integrity of any music that isn't rock.

Looks like I was missing a lot, then. Thanks for clearing this up; I'd been wondering about this for a while. All of the illustrations that I'd seen for it mentioned rockists' praising "real" bands and condemning "manufactured" pop stars, which seemed a lot more reasonable to me. Praising bands and condemning literally everything else is stupid. Would it be bad form to close the thread at this point? You guys answered my question pretty definitively. I don't understand how a bit of googling or Wikipediaing wouldn't have answered this question...SHAM BAM BAMINA posted:Looks like I was missing a lot, then. Thanks for clearing this up; I'd been wondering about this for a while. Is it, though? What we should be assessing is the end result. Is the song any good? Would Led Zeppelin's music be any worse if it had all been created in a test tube? Perhaps to rockists it would be. Which is daft.
