Presumably this is the actual him: https://twitter.com/PeterSagan

Remember when the Tour Down Under used to be five pan-flat sprint stages and once up Willunga Hill? They really upgraded the route this year.

Why yes, yes I do.

McEwen was talking about how they used to do just 3 loops here and now they're doing six.

Tomorrow is easier and will be contested in a bunch sprint, but it's not pan-flat. But you can tell that it's just there to give them a break before Stage Five.

Aug 13, 2006

It's understandable to me. I'll bet this is some of the Sky team's first intensity after base training. They've got a long classics season a head of them. That's their real goal.

Blanco on the other hand, their clock is ticking. They came into this knowing they needed to make an impression and land a title sponsor. Slagter could have tailored his training for this race, not worrying at all about peaking too early for the rest of the season.

I was a bit sad to see Geraint fade at the end of that climb but not particularly surprised. Slagter was very impressive, the way he shot across to Gerrans was fantastic to watch.

Australian Media claiming TDU is "Second only to the TDF"

We won't dignify that with a response, but focus on the positives: This year's race was much, much improved and a genuine curtain raiser to the season.

At the other end of the GC was Luxembourg’s grand-tour star Schleck, who started Sunday’s finale second-to-last.

Grounded by injury since breaking his coccyx in last year’s Dauphiné, Schleck couldn’t catch a break. After struggling all week, Schleck punctured early in the circuit race and never managed to regain contact.

Don't expect someone targeting the TdF to light up a January stage race. Do expect them to have enough base fitness to sit in with the peloton though. Expect them to be able to chase back on after a wheel change.

As you can see, that's everyone who's everyone at one day classic races. All the team leaders will be there so look out for Hushovd, Boonen, Flecha, Cancellara etc. It's the first Belgian race, so the Belgians take it seriously, and they go through some of the same climbs as the Tour of Flanders but generally they get the climbs out of the way fairly early on and then there is a "relaxing" smooth ride home. Having said that, the races I've seen have been classic cycle races: Wars of attrition with the winner the one with the energy to attack 20k out and ride home solo.

The Race of the Two Seas route released, as usual there's a starting TTT and a finishing ITT (it's only 10k long so it'll only settle it if the race is close), two sprint stages, a lumpy stage, a mountain finish and another mountain stage without a mountain finish. Froome is scheduled to take part in that. The summit finish will be fun, and if they're doing the same thing as before the Cheti finish is a climb (where that photo in the OP is taken from) where it's really steep and then the remaining climbers race through this picturesque Italian hill-top town.

I just think that's so cool

edit: Omloop is late feb so we're a month away at the moment.

I think the classics season is going to be fantastic this year. The new generation of classics stars is going to start pushing out the old guard, especially with Boonen suffering from some early season injuries. Peter Sagan has said he will be disappointed if he doesn't win a classic and I think most here would agree with him. Sep Vanmarcke beat Boonen in a sprint to win Het Niewsblad last year and Blanco has a bunch of other talented young guys too. Geraint Thomas has quit the track for good and will be better than ever this spring, and with Flecha gone Team Sky will presumably have Thomas and Boasson Hagen as joint leaders in the classics, with Bernie Eisel playing the mentor to both.

Of course it is also possible that Spartacus will just win everything.

Doping news! Yaaaaaaaaaay!

The Luxembourg cycling federation has at long last issued a verdict on the Frank Schleck case. He will receive a one year suspension back-dated to the time of the positive test, meaning he will be free to ride from July 14th this year. It is of course possible that WADA will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to have the ban extended to two years since, you know, that's the penalty for failing a dope test. It's also possible that Frank will appeal to CAS because that has worked so well for so many other cyclists throughout the years.

In news from the trial of Dr Eufamio Fuentes of Operation Puerto fame, the mad doc offered yesterday to give the court a notebook containing the key to the code-names used in the evidence that was seized from his office back in 2006. For reasons I do not understand at all the judge refused to allow him to do this. The next important decision in the trial will come on Friday, when the judge will decide whether or not to approve WADA's request to release the 200 blood bags from the 2006 raid. The Spanish courts have been sitting on these bags (not literally) for the past six years and WADA is trying to put them in the hands of the Spanish anti-doping authorities, although what good that will do I do not know.

I've been working at a bike shop that sells Trek and Cannondale bikes since last June, so I should probably get some understanding of Cycling. Last Summer people kept asking me about the Tour, and Lance, and all this poo poo and I just kind of stared blankly at them. Is there a good way to into Cycling? Should I just start watching random races? Should I pick a name out of a hat? Put a bunch of teams on a roulette and give it a spin? I literally know nothing about pro Cycling.

Jump in and start watching races, it's the best way to learn. Don't worry about picking someone to support before you start watching, you will quickly find some favourites through nationalism or seeing someone do something cool.

The best way to watch races is to keep an eye on this thread and cyclingfans.com, any important event will have multiple live streams.

How i got started was watching the classics and trying to get to grips with the tactics then see which teams and riders were doing stuff i enjoyed. For me i loved how stuart o'grady and jens voight always worked so hard for CSC and so kinda slipped into following the various iterations of that team. Cycling's a bit different though and i would say most people don't really follow a team as closely in most sports but generally follow one and then support a couple of other riders in the peleton.
