![]() This server launched on Jan 18th, after a year(?) of beta testing. I started yesterday and it actually seems like a pretty well populated server, and the owner seems pretty level headed. Some of the main features: - 2 Accounts per IP - 3 Characters per account - Faction system in play - No Trammel - No Smart Target, Ranged Target, Closest Target, etc. - Relatively easy skill gain. Some skills however are extremely difficult, creating much value to those skill sets. - Classic & Customizable housing Server Info http://uoforever.com LOGIN: login.uoforever.com PORT: 2599 Goon Talk with Mumble Mumble server: gaming-mumble.goonfleet.com 64738 mellon A poo poo ton of info about getting started and what you need to know can be found here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...6#post412849126 quote:

I logged in on the 18th and have put in a few hours on a couple of characters. Really enjoying the shard, I haven't played UO since the 90's so all the Renaissance stuff is brand new to me. I have been having a lot of fun, the nostalgia is great, and unlike every other free shard I have checked out in the past few weeks, I actually find myself interacting with other players here.

This server is actually pretty awesome. been playing a week. Skill gain is super fast inside of dungeons especially for PVP skills. Crafting skills remain hard but thats for the best. Server has gotten off to a great start.

Thanks to this post I just signed up and played for a few hours. My gosh, reading the FAQ on the site.... On paper everything is just about perfect.

I played UO when it first came out, but quit after a few months because I never learned how to actually play, I just ran around and clicked on things until I died. Is there a "getting started for idiots" guide somewhere?

Is there a "getting started for idiots" guide somewhere? Seems like the server website has a video guide for new players, I'm about to view it myself. The topic list looks comprehensive. You can find it here: http://uoforever.com/guides.php I've never played UO but always wanted to give it a try... sounded like pure player-driven chaos, which is just my style. Downloading the client now, this server looks like a good place to start

Is there a "getting started for idiots" guide somewhere? Hm, well a google search I'm sure will yield a number of guides for each kind of profession but unfortunately there are a number of things about the game you kind of just have to understand so you can sort of take it from there and look up things as you go. I'm gonna lay out some super basics, so I apologize if you already know any of this. I also apologize if anything is wrong or out of date because I haven't played this game in forever. It's a "skill-based" game rather than a "class-based" game. So basically if you pick up a broadsword and hit something with it, it will occasionally (less often as your skill gets higher) result in an increase in your Swordsmanship skill. In general, skills can be a max of 100%. The level of your skill determines things like damage, potency, success-rate etc depending on what skill it is. There are obviously a number of mage, warrior, bard, animal-tamer, crafter skills in the game. The game imposes a limit of 700 TOTAL skill points. In other words, you can max out 7 skills. That's how the game goes about creating classes. Knowing that, it's just a matter of looking up the popular templates or builds. For instance, an animal taming character would probably looking something like this: Animal Taming (the ability to tame animals) Animal Lore (the ability to control those animals) Veterinary (so you can heal your pet) Magery (so you can cast spells like "Gateway" so you can teleport you and your pet around the world) 50% Meditation (so you can get your mana back after casting spells) 50% Magic Resist (so you don't die to magic monsters or other mage players so easily) Musicianship (so you can play instruments. see below) Peacemaking (used to make monsters/animals docile so that your pet can kill them more easily and so you can tame them more easily) Warriors are a lot simpler to make and infinitely cheaper as it takes next to no start up money. You just use your noob money (you start out with ~1k) to go buy a sword, or a spear or whatever and go kill some stuff.

I have really fond memories of when they decided you could only have a maximum number of pets in the stable and all the animal trainers' dragons and whatever just got booted out and there were loving dragons running around killing poo poo in a bunch of towns. I might check this out. Also portals to dangerous dangerous places in the middle of town.

This is all great info, and thank you. Apparently though, I'm missing something even easier than this: I made a character in Britain and wandered out to the forest where there were a bunch of bears. I right-clicked and left-clicked and spacebared and did everything I could think of but couldn't figure out how to attack. I just walked up to the bears and snuggled up to them.

This is a great guide on the RunUO site: http://www.runuo.com/community/thre...-uo-101.123401/ Most of it pertains to UO in general, but some of it is server specific. Pretty much all of it applies to UOForever

If you hold tab you'll notice that your cursor will go red and your guy (or girl) will go into like a fighting stance. You can then double click on anything to attack it. Don't attack anything with a blue name or you'll become a criminal and people can attack you with no penalty. Also, if you click and drag anything (animal, monster, npc, other player) their health bar will show up and you can use that to target them. Like if you're a mage and you need to click on the monster everytime you cast a spell, it's a lot easier to just target their healthbar than it is to actually target them in-game. There are also macros you can set up that utilize "last target" commands and stuff like that, but there's no need to get into all that yet. If you're not using it already, I suggest getting Razor: http://www.runuo.com/files/razor/Razor_Latest.exe. This utility will allow you to login to their website, and also has a lot of utility for setting up macros/hotkeys.

It's been awhile since I've played a UO:R shard with stun punch, etc. Could anyone explain why I'm constantly grey? I'm guessing it's based on the old notoriety system, but I'm not totally sure.

FAT-N-GAY-4-PAY posted:It's been awhile since I've played a UO:R shard with stun punch, etc. Well being grey is supposed to be temporary and it happens when you do anything at all illegal. There's a setting in the options that will determine whether the game prompts you whenever you're about to do anything illegal. Maybe that's turned off and you keep doing something illegal?

I just started playing this, how viable are thieves on this ruleset? Thats the one gameplay element I just can't get anywhere else than UO.

Thieves are super viable. Except for checks, spell books, and rune books (only 1 runebook per char is blessed) pretty much everything is steal-able.

Here's a related thread on the official forums: http://uoforever.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=490 Looks like currently stealing is about as viable as it can be (can steal from players and monsters), but apparently dungeon chests are disabled to keep the economy in check.

I'll second that. I started playing a few days ago and so far I'm pretty satisfied with this server. There's barely any grind (already have an almost 5x dexer and an almost 4x mage) and it's got a great population with new players still joining every day. I'm getting my usual crew of hardened UO vets to check it out this weekend. If you're interested in a UO:R server done right without all the bullshit of Hybrid then this is the place to be in the UO free server world right now.

There's 415 clients online now at 11 pm EST. So far it's been about ~350 during the day and ~400 at prime time. The skills tab displays mysticism and spellweaving but neither of those are in the game. It's just the UO client.

I've been just kind of casually playing and leveling a dexxer just in the interest of easing my friends into it who have never played. I'll have a small house soon and can give you a little gold if you need some startup cash. message me here or on skype JeremyBowyer.

So I've started playing this today. Got a full set of bone armor and a rad Bardiche on my warrior, but I'm kind of at a loss on what to do now. Should I just continue at the newbie dungeon area farming stuff, or what? e: Oh yeah, I'm following the template in the newbie videos if that helps anything.

Yeah your goal right now is just to skill up a bit and move onto bigger and better dungeons. http://uo.stratics.com/content/atlas/maps/UltUoMas.jpg There's a map of the world. If you notice Brit graveyard (where the newbie dungeon is) is pretty close to a dungeon called Despise. That's a good next step once you start handling the newbie dungeon just fine. Most of the stuff in there just does like melee physical damage and doesn't poison. Obviously there is the occasional pk but... it's UO what're you gonna do? You're overall goal right now is just to farm enough gold to get some basic equipment (exceptional weapon/armor crafted by a player) and eventually buy a city runebook and a dungeon runebook so you don't have to hoof it everywhere

What would you say would be the best template for general pve stuff? I've heard things about tamers, but it all sounds really complicated.

Kevlar Beard posted:What would you say would be the best template for general pve stuff? I've heard things about tamers, but it all sounds really complicated. Well hands down a tamer/bard is the money maker pve template to end all templates. The idea being you use music to provoke 2 monsters to fight each other while your dragon or whatever pet attacks as well. It's also really cheap to start up, but it takes a long while to level those skills up. Essentially what you do is make a character and for your profession or trade or whatever you select "Advanced" and choose animal taming and provocation so they both start at 50 (they're the 2 most useful/hardest skills you're gonna need). Then you just basically head out into the woods and start taming things and provoking things onto each other. Your best bet is to beg in town for a little bit of gold so you can buy some skill training from NPC's. If that's not your cup of teach just making a warrior is enough to keep you busy for a good long while. You won't be able to kill any super high level mobs, but you can make a good living no problem. You can even make a warrior/bard so you can provoke monsters on each other while you whack away at them.

If you don't want to go into taming you can try a bard, they use music instruments to make monsters stand around doing nothing (Peacemaking) or entice monsters to attack one another (Provocation) You can macro up peacemaking in town, for provocation it helps to have a house. I can also recommend getting UO Auto-Map makes it easier to run around and not get lost. Magery/Swordmanship/Fencing/Archery Eval/Anatomy Medi/Healing Music Provo Peace Resist Edit: I also got about 12k i can put towards a goon house.

Are axers any good? I tried making a tamer, but it was actually more annoying than I thought it would be. Right now my dude has Anatomy, Healing, Lumberjacking, Magery, Resisting Spells, Swordsmanship, and Tactics. Is parry good on this shard?

I'm actually asking on the forums right now about axers because their FAQ is a little vague about the bonus dmg you get from having lumberjacking. I don't think they changed anything with parry so it can definitely be useful. Right now I'm making a fencer with parry and I think maybe poisoning, I'm not sure yet.
