I got the $99 dollar 2DS deal at Wal-Mart today because me and the missus wanted another DS so we could play multiplayer games together. Black Friday is a relatively new thing in Canada, and there was like no one at the store. I didn't even have to wait in line!

I went into my local Walmart at like 2am on the way home from my parents' house and the 2DSes were pretty much the only thing that hadn't been cleaned out, there were still like a huge stack of them. I'm guessing this is because of the same marketing issue as the WiiU, in that nobody knows what the gently caress a 2DS is and if it's different from a regular DS. I certainly wouldn't have known the difference if it was my first time seeing it.

The last one I played was Red/Blue way way back and I figured they'd have overcome that 'technical limitation' by now. Sweet, guess I'm not playing until I can get another copy(gf is already 5~ hours into it).

The gameplay has barely evolved past Red/Blue, no reason to believe anything else would.

Just as a note, I don't know if it was like this when it was posted or if Slickdeals turds got to it, but these are currently Store Pickup Only, so make sure you have a Best Buy in your area that has them. The only one in my area that has Fire Emblem is 40 minutes away so I hope that game's as good as you say.

fozzy fosbourne posted:

The definition of Metroidvania can be pretty vague and superficial anyways, sometimes to the point where it's not very useful. When it's reduced down to "backtracking and accessing previously unavailable areas with new powers" it's pretty meaningless, to me at least, because often that's not very fun on it's own and not exclusive to Metroid or Castlevania (Zelda and Mario did this for example). Like, games like Guacamelee and some of the later Zeldas have fractions of heart containers littered around that you go back and get when you finally get an uppercut or bomb or something, but that's not really the basis of a game genre and often not very fun depending on how it's done, since backtracking has a bunch of disadvantages.

I'm not sure if it's my own definition of "Metroidvania" or if I'm intruding with my interpretation that's something else altogether, but the aspect I liked of those games: action games where the player has the agency to explore areas where the player is significantly "out of their depth" but can eventually progress via new powers and player skill to anywhere in the game world. In other words, the part of Metroid I really liked wasn't as much the ability to open various doors with 5 missiles, then 10, then a super missile, then a super bomb, to find little goodies behind, but rather the ability to go to Norfair or Brinstar too early and get rocked but eventually "be at home" in those zones and overcome that mountain. Rogue Legacy feels more like what I liked about Metroid and SoTN than Guacamelee, for example.

I'm not really sure if Cave Story qualifies (hence my original "?"), since I've never played it, and mostly just wanted to sperg out on Metroidvanias for a minute

:goonsay:

Hell, Zelda II qualifies under most of the requirements for a "metroidvania" but I don't know whether that's a positive thing or not.

Anyone else go to Toys R Us to get the $19.99 Pokemon Y deal? Turned out it was a misprint, so while they are still honoring the price they're not giving the $10 gift card for buying two of them.

I didn't think of going to Best Buy to do a price match to try and get Pokemon X, but if any of you guys picked up an extra one I'll trade you for one of the two Y's I picked up. I took the Trus circular to Best Buy today when I was picking up Fire Emblem and Lego City, and they let me have Pokemon X no questions. I was actually kind of surprised at how hassle-free it was. Must vary from store to store, I got Pokemon X from a Best Buy using the Toys R Us circular that only showed Pokemon Y for $20. I was surprised at how hassle-free it was.

I went to another Target today to see about the Zelda 3DS and the guy there said they're delisting it, although the locked case still had the price tag showing it at $150. Walmart seems to be the only place in my area that still has it according to their website, so hopefully between the circular I picked up and the picture I took of the price tag, they'll match it for me.

What else are some things I must download off the eshop, as opposed to buying in cartridge form? I know some folks were saying those Sega 3D classics are good, and Phoenix Wright is download only, do eshop games typically go down in price / go on sale? Should I scratch up an extra :10bux: and spring for Link Between Worlds?
