Description
In a world of renaissance meets steampunk, stealth or magic are key elements. Play style can be incredibly varied in a world of multiple approaches and goals.

You are the once-trusted bodyguard of the Empress. Framed for her murder and driven by revenge, you must become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. As you navigate a world torn apart by plague and oppressed by a government armed with strange new technologies, the truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city.

Style
The game can be played non-lethally or as a master assassin, and I will be using a combination of these techniques - hopefully enough of a mix that I will be able to show off all four(?) of the endings. The plot actually branches in multiple ways, and I'll try to explain each as we encounter them. It won't be a 100% playthrough since I like to keep the story moving, but should give you a very good feel for the game.

Schedule
I will be posting one episode per week, Wednesday evening (CST). This will not interrupt my currently running Deus Ex: Human Revolution series (Mon/Fri).

Feedback/Suggestions/Participation
I love feedback - even negative comments are appreciated, that's how I improve. If you want to see something specific definitely mention it ahead of time. I'm planning my route ahead of time, so there won't be much backtracking.

Spoilers
Please use the spoiler tags if you're unsure if something is a spoiler. As I mentioned in the video I won't be sticking completely to the game for overarching details, so I'll leave it up to your judgment whether you still want to tag details I've talked about.

The first hour or so of this game tends to be relatively linear, then it branches out and gives you quite a bit more goal choice. I consider this an extended, but nicely done tutorial (with plenty of important plot details in it). I've obviously turned off all tutorial prompts to make it more immersive.

This game seems to use a lot of things from Brink like textures on crates to the body types of the enemies. I guess Bethesda had to recycle that game in some fashion. Anyways, never played Dishonored but from the looks of it I may have to pick it up and give it a try!

Word to the wise, don't ever buy Brink.

Your DX LPs were really good (unnecessary hoarding of lockpicks and multitools in DX1 notwithstanding ) and you're a good fit to show this game off too imho.

I managed to beat this game with a very limited number of kills, but I'd love to see how you get through the game completely non-lethally. Especially early in the game when you don't have any supernatural abilities I found it very tricky to avoid situations that required some kind of violence. Course that may have just been me learning the game and I'd do better if I went back, but magic is invaluable for a pacifist run.

One of my friends almost managed it, but a guard she subdued fell off a roof and died.

She... wasn't pleased.

I know that pain. I'm about halfway through a Ghost/Clean Hands run, and I've had to reload several times. This next mission I had to do three times - once because I got spotted and didn't realize it, once because someone died (probably fell off a roof) and I didn't realize it, and then finally got it right.

For the most part, it's patience and caution, and taking alternate routes until you have what you need to avoid conflict. Once you get the first power at level 2, life becomes far easier.

Well, going all none-lethal is really not necessary other as a personal challenge, since you're allowed a few kills here and there while still staying on "low" chaos.

That being said I found my pacifist run really easy just off the back of the blink power; it really feels quite broken when you use it with the lean system.

Added a general spoiler policy, though it's pretty loose because of the narrative way I'll be doing this particular playthrough.

Videos are definitely welcome, considering how many different ways there are to play through this game - I'll be no where near 100% it - though I'll try to catch all the interesting bits. I've seen some popular people on YouTube that are only half way through the game at 40 episodes, and have no idea how anyone can stand to watch that much bumbling around or looting.

I actually think being 1st person is one of the game's biggest strengths. It keeps it from being just an Assassin's Creed clone, and makes it feel more like a modernized Thief. The ability to go back to areas from the Hound Pits and dick around and collect runes and bone charms would have been nice though. I also wish Corvo had a voice. Overall, the game is still pretty sweet though.

So if you don't kill anyone when you're escaping from prison, does the propaganda broadcast actually mention that, or is it always the same line?

The one thing that annoys me about this game is how little is explained. At least, in primary gameplay. Basically nothing in the world is really explained, for the power generation, to the equipment or even the organization of the society. It could have made for a MUCH more interesting game if they'd taken the time to develop the world a bit more outside of the crazy big codex you amass.

It's changed, but not by much (like most of the voicework). Similarly, I don't remember ever hearing the "widow" line in my non-lethal run. It caught me off guard the first time; too bad it is overused.

You're a ninja Thief with magical powers. No, I know what you mean, I've heard a couple people not necessarily hate the world, but seem "finished" with Corvo and a bit frustrated with the plot. I myself never really noticed much about The Outsider where I felt strongly that he was standing in for some message/idea or something else. Then again, too much would be more annoying, I think.

True, but there are ways to work in world building without resorting to . Although part of the problem is also the structure of the story (everyone who hasn't played will see as the game continues), but overall it just feels bleached in a way. Their two methods of getting across their world are the heart and the codex, neither of which are very good at their jobs (due to clunky design). It'd be better if they set that sort of stuff in game either through civilian discussions that you can over hear or just NPC's explaining it to you because you've been gone a while.

There are a fair amount of background details given through books and letters, but a lot is just left to the player's supposition. There doesn't really seem to be anything special about how the city operates - it's a steampunk mashup of various European cities engaged in maritime trade - and elements such as power generation are little understood by most people in the world anyway (whale oil = magic somehow).

It at least gives slightly more away than the Thief games do about the setting, but they were stronger in terms of characterisation of the main character. While he's not entirely silent (just unvoiced), little detail is given about his relationship with the Empress or his own personal past.

I killed two people on the prison level (not sure how) but was no-kill for the rest of it. I think stealthing it up was how the game was meant to be played, but later powers do make that approach quite trivial.

Just guessing, but the two people probably were the 2 guards in front of the blast door. They take splash damage if they are put in the dumpster. Another possibility is in the rooms that the backup comes from, because if they are angry and attacking there is a chance of them shooting or slicing the unconscious bodies.

Thanks. I'm not much of an achievement hunter and probably wouldn't play the game again to lose those two deaths, but I have heard of this being a common problem on that level.

Well, I think the thief games also were stronger in terms of game design. The city had more of a personality, and most of what you learn of the setting, is taught either by Garret griping about something, or by your quest giver explaining why he wants you to steal something. Here it's just kind of "kill this guy, kill that guy" with the reasons given being able to work in any setting.

I think you can read that message in the Pembleton and Emily tableau. Can't remember what it says, though.

Regarding the Heart, I think it's commentary's largely random for the most part -- even for some of the named characters, like Wallace and Callista. I think the line we heard for Callista in the second LP segment is a generic line that plays for some of the other female servant characters, and I've had several lines for Wallace come up that not only play for other characters, but seem inconsistent with his characterisation to boot. Like the Heart claiming that he's an Overseer spy, or that he's got a wife and child (which seems incredibly unlikely, reading between the lines).

That said, I really love the Heart. The way it works, the way the player is allowed to deduce its history on their own, that it's basically a glorified objective marker system but covered up so much Grand Guignol that it's not readily apparent. It's really very cool.

The voice acting's so inconsistent in this game. I guess it helps the game's atmosphere by having some of the characters sound so wan and tired, but I can't think that Brad Douriff (Pierro) was meant to sound so horribly mumbly, or Lean Heady's character is meant to chew off the end of all her lines like she does. And Slattery's kind of poor here as well, though most everyone else is at least adequate if not great. I'm guessing it's down to the voice direction, but I've no idea really.

Yeah the message Emily is holding says they told her you were dead, but she's going to put a message in a bottle for you - or something like that. (meaning she still hopes you're alive)

Some of the servants do have generic heart lines, which is unfortunate. You might be thinking of Lydia and Cecelia (the maid and the girl in the cap) - but most of Callista's are unique as far as I know. The talk about whaling is what I really wanted to show off with her.

The Heart strikes me as a missed opportunity. If they'd set it up so that it was kind of like The Darkness (in the titular game) and it would start talking about various areas without being yanked out and squeezed, It could have been used to integrate the background SO well into the game. Wouldn't have to be conscious, just "I recognize I'm in this area" and start whispering memories.

Is it just me, or is the guy playing Pietro just... not even trying.
