That seems a lot better than ending up with 5 hard carries and nobody to buy wards which raises the question why people would voluntarily subject themselves to that possibility.

My worst dota experiences in the all-stars days have invariably been tied to All Random. The only good all random is Deathmatch Allrandom because if you get some bad heroes you're not stuck with them all game.

I'm pretty sure Troll Warlord's theme is already "always mad at everything." I mean, he even has lines where he threatens the shopkeeper.

So, how exactly do you build Warlord? I'd imagine you wouldn't really need any attack speed from items and could focus on straight damage. So maybe phase->drums->bkb->crit?

I do love how Troll Warlord gives an angry "Mask of Madness, seriously?" line for buying mask of madness. It is still hilarious to pop that and ult and be pretty drat close to max attack speed even without any fervor stacks.

I am wondering if this is one of the few heroes that sange and yasha is a legit pickup, since his high attack and move speed would probably make it easier to proc on someone, and skadi felt a bit lackluster. Orb of Venom is super boss on this gently caress in lane though.

I was wondering about the sheer number of champs that there are, and how understanding their abilities will affect me once I move into proper games. Is it generally required to have an understanding of how each champ plays in order to be effective (i.e. have played each champ once)?

I don't mind not being the best on my team, but I definitely don't want to be a scrub who drags the team down and loses them the game.

Having an understanding of how each hero works really helps, especially early on when other people you play against don't quite know how they work. One thing that takes a while but works well is to play a bot game with each hero (in order or not) so you understand how each of their skills work and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Even if you don't do well with them, at the very least you won't have that horrible feeling of 'Oh my god he just used a skill on me what is he doing to me'.

Better yet, just watch the Dotacinema hero summaries, they're pretty concise and cover the main points of each hero well.

Obviously knowing what every hero does is essential but if you play bot games until you're familiar with everything it's going to get boring quick, I'd say that in the lowers queues no one is going to be very familiar with 100% of the heroes, so there's no shame in jumping right in and start playing against actual people.

If anything when you get killed by a hero you don't recognize you can take the time to read his skills (and what killed you) once you're waiting to respawn.

Still uncertain after all these years.

I wonder if Valve would have made that change if Dotabuff hadn't proposed the monetizing thing on DBR? Would they have made it if Dotabuff hadn't proposed DBR at all?

It seems like this is one thing Valve would like to keep control of themselves. I can see how you wouldn't want some 3rd Party in charge of a rating that might become the community's standard.

Knowledge is power. The better you understand all the heroes the better you can deal with them. On a basic level though it's fine to just understand that Sven is a fighty dude with a stun for example. Don't be super scared of jumping into matchmaking, there are always going to be people at your skill level even if your skill level is 'Mash all the heroes together and see what happens. What did I die to?'.

No, he's actually the best hero in the game and if he is ever picked you can do naught but lay down and take it.

He's just an AGI carry with a bash and really good innate attack speed. Find a buddy and hit him with a stick.

Is there a good guide on picking heroes that compliment each other? I generally know the carry/initiator/jungler/support/disabler/ganker roles but I don't know off-hand what heroes compliment each other. For instance I was yelled at in game for picking Wisp because there were no good heroes to pair with Wisp which made me realize that I had no idea what heroes should be getting shuffled around the map and which shouldn't.

When I refers to lower queues I mean the matches with brand new players who have very few games played and are new to Dota in general, maybe there's a better word for it.

Probably won't make it for this thread but this patch is the greatest. New hero with a funny gimmick, AR in MM, least-played locking out 40 heroes, loving over DBR, and even a nice pathfinding fix that I never expected because I thought that's how WC3 handled it. And of course, bot guy delivers.

Troll doesn't have a 1v1 counter in the same way ursa doesn't - he's best countered by a team with better teamfight, lockdown and a strong pushing strategy. Any decent disablers will run a train on him until he gets bkb, and he doesn't have teamfight synergy unless the enemy team picks around him (unlikely in a pub).

I'd pick a push lineup to deny map control and soft counter his weak laning + early game presence. Someone like jakiro/enigma/batrider.

Stuns, burst damage, slows and kiting heroes are all pretty good. He pretty much has to rush a bkb unless you have a team with no good cc. Like any carry, he will get super scary if you let him farm, but he has no escape other than manning up and trying to kill you, or walking away fast, so gank the poo poo out of him.

Nuke him. Gang up on him. Don't try to solo the best autoattack duelist in the game. He doesn't even have any defensive properties if you're not up in his face to take Melee Whirling Axes, just beat him up without letting him get on top of you.

You don't need to know how every hero plays to start, just what their spells are. That will still make you better than like 98% of players just getting into matchmaking queue.

Also, I would advise against referring to the heroes as champions or champs in-game as you will get hell for it.

Waroduce posted:

Treat him like a PA that is worse at chasing (no blink, less spammable slow), but has a nuke, basically. Also, instead of getting 2 shot by a crit, you might get bashed a couple times.

Waroduce posted:

BKB piercing disables completely invalidate his only early survival item (BKB) which he needs because otherwise he's pretty easily to kill. He's also really susceptible to kiting as he has to hit someone until he gets a lucky bash or two to really lock them down, so mobile heroes give him trouble too (he gets faster when melee but only +20/30ms, and Phase isn't gonna be off cooldown all the time). His lack of any real escape means nuking gankers will give him an awkward time unless he turns to fight and gets supremely lucky, and his reliance on autoattacks to do any real damage mid to lategame makes disarms really strong if his BKB isn't off cd (at which point you can bait it out and kite).

So Beastmaster, Magnus, Treant and Bane come to mind for specific heroes (Bane can reduce his damage too which is really important, as it's what he'll often build), and Halberd/Butterfly are the usual great anti-carry items. Ghost Scepter works for peeling him off you, but be warned of his nuke damage getting amped as if he's close enough he can hit you with the Melee axes anyway.
