Fiddle aprons are things that are generally used with people suffering from dementia. They are aprons that the person wears and they have all manner of things on the front that can keep the person's hands and mind occupied. My girlfriend doesn't have dementia, but she is a compulsive fiddler like me (and loves bright colours), so for her birthday (in 3 weeks) I'm making her a fiddle apron. I'm not a sewing expert but I don't mind putting time and effort into stuff so I've done okay so far - it's hardly professional quality but I do have a sewing machine that I've borrowed for this purpose. Here's a pic of what I've done so far: ![]() So far it has a button on a cord and a loop for it on one of the pockets, some beads on a cord between the pockets (ended up looking a bit silly because it pulls the pocket tops down), a zip that goes through to the back, a couple of buttons just sewn on, and 3 ribbons to plait (which I'll be shortening). I'm posting here to solicit suggestions for additions that would be fun to fiddle with and not incredibly difficult to attach because I'm pretty new to sewing. Can anyone suggest anything please? Edit: And just for completeness of the story, I've bought a large teddy bear which I'm going to hollow out and stuff this inside, give her the bear as though it's her present, watch her pretend not to be disappointed for an hour or so (a teddy bear is very much not her sort of thing) then give her a SAW style note saying I've implanted her real present in the bear. I stole this idea from these forums. Anjow fucked around with this message at Jan 25, 2013 around 12:19 |

Well that's a really really cool gift, even if on the strange side a bit. Hopefully this is an inside joke and she doesn't think you're suggesting she has dementia? ![]() How about the tips of the fingers of a glove, sewn on lengths of string in a way that would allow her to put them on her fingers and wiggle them around? Maybe each tip is from a different type of glove so they all feel different? Maybe you don't want bunches of different strings hanging off to get tangled in stuff... We bought our Niece a book that had all sorts of different animals in it, and each animal had a different texture cloth/paper/whatever spot that she could touch because she was a baby and liked touching stuff. Maybe you could make a small patchwork area of different texture fabrics, perhaps on the pockets?

I like snaps, if I have a shirt with snaps I'm always snapping them. Also this is really weird.

It had soft fur and rough sandpaper and this shiny Mylar stuff and if was amazing. Fleece, corduroy, seersucker, lace, satin, lamé...all have interesting textures. I had a hoodie sweater with yarn puffs on the end of the drawstrings and I fiddled those to death. They are also really easy to make. I'll fiddle with ruffles, beaded trim, pom-pom trim (aka dingle balls, barf). Also, I see you have pass-through buttons, but you should add some shaft buttons. They attach on the back and are generally more wiggly/twisty.

Awesome suggestions, thanks very much. I'm gonna go to the fabric store today and sort out some different textures and buttons. I also like the idea of beaded trim. This present is not at all weird compared to what she got me for my birthday - a toy giraffe with her face taped onto the front, a framed photoshop of my head on a naked man and a set of little girl's hair accessories.
