Always Drinking

Let's Drink and Play
This is a new web series I'm working on that hopes to take the Let's Play format and speed it up. Each episode is a short video review of a single game, as if I played it for like 4 hours and distilled the hard grain truth to you in a quick single shot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na-eWKhZhwY
http://shotgaming.com/2014/03/10/le...ot-pornography/

What Happened to Steam Shots
Steam Shots is no more! The series had a good run, with 155 episodes covering almost 1,000 games in it's two year run. The show format started with 5 games an episode back in August of 2012. Steam was releasing about 5 games a week at that point, so episodes had a lot of cool down. Steam introduced Greenlight and soon started releasing games in waves, so much so we had to jump into Emergency Mode and cover 10 games an episode, with episodes coming out about every other day. Since Steam was no longer the same kind of experience, we had to scale back the show and admit defeat. It just isn't physically possible for a single person to cover that many games without phoning it in. So now we have a new format and will be hand picking games to focus on 2-4 minute long reviews of single titles. This won't be cherry picking, I'll still be covering games based mainly on their uniqueness, both good and bad. The goal of the show is to warn you about bad games, and inform you about good games while not wasting your time.

Episodes will be posted here as they air, feel free to make requests or talk about titles. Keep in mind the point of the review system is to help you form opinions, not replace your opinions. The four point rating system gives you an idea of how the reviewer feels about the game, while the review itself should let you know if this game is for you. You have to weight both and place them against your preferences to find the show useful.

The Rating System

We start out sober, so when a game is terrible that makes us want to drink. The higher the rating, the drunker we had to be just to power through it. It's pretty much close to a pass/fail system, with some ground to wiggle between both.

1 - Sober: Great game, nothing wrong with it
2 - Buzzed: Good game, not for everyone, but still good
3 - Drunk: Okay game, if you really like something about it (genre/character) everyone else should avoid it unless it is cheap
4 - Wasted: Terrible game, not worth your money or time, not even ironically.

Contests, give me free stuff!!!
Contests will be coming back, the new format will give me some time to spend between games not frantically reviewing the last 20 tablet ports or poorly supported DOS titles some germany company decided to back log onto steam. I'll post them mainly here in SA and will alert winners over PM/Youtube or Facebook.

Are there any sort of crash physics besides apparently rolling over?

Not really, the other crash was a head on at full speed. Your truck will get damaged and require repairs, but no visible damage.

It seems more realistic with things like going over curbs, cutting corners, you know, actual truck stuff and not crashes or stunts.

How about road conditions and weather? Could I take a risky route over the alps in the middle of winter during a blizzard and wipe out going off a cliff?

Well there is rain and fog, but the rain doesn't do anything physics wise unfortunately. There are windscreen/shield wipers though and you do need to use them.

It seems like there's a management sim involved at the endgame, but yeah, looks like simulated driving.

Are the distances realistic or is all kind of abstracted down?

Its X3 but with trucks instead of spaceships. Once you get enough money to hire other dudes and buy more trucks you could essentially just park and make money doing nothing if you hate fun.

It also simulates parking and keeps track of stuff like running lights and you need to rest and get gas and keep a tight control on the time and money you spend to make a profit.

The distances are sorta real, I guess. I've never driven in Europe, but it takes awhile to get around and you unlock new cites as you do missions into them. I don't think it is to scale or google earth accurate, but it feels like a real big place to drive around.

Having watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look on it, I'm pretty sure the distances are scaled down, yeah.

Euro Truck is oddly relaxing, just like real driving. I ended up spacing out during the tutorial and missing my turnoff.

I've played the demo for like 3 hours and if I don't win a copy I'm buying it its super relaxing for some reason.

Something's wrong with me. It's 7 AM, my PS3 is on pause, I should be in bed, but here I am driving a truck. I'm driving a truck across Eastern Europe, listening to what is apparently Russian dubstep, checking my mirrors, delivering some kind of produce, and getting angry because that loving gold car will not loving merge into the correct loving lane so I can get by. Does that even apply in this part of Europe? I don't know. I'm driving a truck.

I played that demo for like 2 hours and I can only be reminded of two games: Cross Country Canada and Test Drive Unlimited 2. One is the Canadian equivalent of Oregon Trail, where broke rear end 90s school kids played it on welfare Windows 95 desktops in class to learn about how we get our food, and the other is supposedly a racing game about high speed super cars that I ended up playing as an excuse to drive down every road in Hawaii in free roam mode. Both were strangely engrossing games where you just drive around in cockpit view, traveling from point A to point B.

Only I can't type "speed" and get pulled over by the cops or pick up a hitch hiker like I could in Cross Country Canada. Maybe they could do that for Euro Truck Simulator 3. Either way I totally entered your contest. Thanks for the opportunity to win this thing. Now I have to take some stuff from Berlin out to some German town I've never heard of before, and I'm strangely hype for it.

This is where something humorous was supposed to go. Hell, I'm doing it wrong.

Not a toxx, but if I by some miracle win this game, I think I'm gonna do my first LP, and a VLP. Nothing like chilling having panic attacks while hauling a double trailer for your first mission to make for a nice chill LP.

I may have made a test video from the demo. It might have involved me being completely incapable of navigating turns in any meaningful way since I couldn't stop myself from going max speed to save my life. Either way, if I somehow end up with a copy of this... well... by gawd... I think the call of the open road would just be too much to bear.

Thanks, btw. This game rules as a chill thing to do, and is really fun. I enjoy this simulation of driving trucks I've driven a couple of times.

I love how the trailer on Steam makes strategic use of zoom, pan, and Euro-pop to make driving a truck and clicking through menus seem as exciting as possible.

Never played that one, but this game is fantastic for zoning out. It's like you just get a task and you get to do it. You don't gotta think about it, or plot stuff out or worry, you just get in your truck, follow the GPS and drive.

You can of course make it as complicated as you like with the manager system and all that. But man, it feels good just to drive.
