Quake Live is a free online arena first person shooter based off the popular Quake 3 Arena that came out in 1999. With some minor changes to balancing and bug fixes the game plays like vanilla Quake 3 but with a few added features. Id software hired modders and community mappers to add new modes, maps, and features to Quake Live. The base game is free to play but limits you to free servers and a small map pool. While paying for a subscription gets you some extra features such as the ability to start servers and invite your friends!

Changes from Quake 3:
  • Quake Live features a modified version of the Quake 3 Team Arena HUD, displaying weapon ammunition on the left.
  • A few more maps are available, as well as the player models from Quake 3: Team Arena in neutral colors (The default colors for Q3:TA models used to be red).
  • New skins are included for some models.
  • FOV (field of view) adjustments, Railgun colors and style, and other customizations are available in the options menu.
  • The gibs created in Quake 3 when fragging an opponent or destroying a corpse with a very powerful weapon is replaced by impact sparks.
  • When starting a match, all players need to be ready in Quake Live. However, in Quake 3, the match starts right away without a warmup period on default.
  • Some maps carried over to Quake Live have been slightly altered. The original tournament map against Xaero in Quake Live, for example, has a new platform for the Quad Damage powerup. Also, the object spawning areas in the maps have been modified.
  • During the game, Quake Live features the player's statistics - score, frags, deaths, ping, accuracy, favorite weapon, time, chain kills, railgun frags, gauntlet kills, captures, assists, defense medals and current place in the game. Quake 3 did not feature any accuracy or favorite weapon stat, as well as the number of chain kills, railgun kills, gauntlet kills, captures, assists, and defends.
  • At the end of a game in Quake Live, one may view all the player's individual statistics for a time.
  • Death messages that appear on screen without an open console involve the player's name, icon of the weapon used to kill, and the fragged player. Previously, sentences describing the frags were used.
  • Some weapon damages have been adjusted. Like Railgun now deals 80 damage and Machine Gun now deals 5 damage per hit. Rocket Launcher splash damage scaled down to 84 from 100.
  • Some Power-Ups have changed, Eg: A persistent power-up called Ammo Regen is now Armor Regen, Flight power-up changed to be a usable item.
  • Added a new armor type called Green Armor that appears on a few maps. Grants 25 armor points and stacks with all other armor types, have the same absorb rate of 2/3.
  • Added Pro Quake Live mode which changes weapon switch speed, player movement physics, and tiered armor to be more like CPMA.



For users who decided to pay a subscription you are able to start your own server, then invite up to 6 free members, when ever you want. This also allows you to select the region in which the server is located and change tons of in game variables. This allows you to make the game very bizarre or as serious as you want.


Quake Live also keeps track of all your statistics so everyone can see how horrible you are and what modes you play the most (then judge you for it).


One of my favorite changes from vanilla Quake 3 is the ability to tons of client side settings. This allows you to create custom HUDs and settings through the in game settings window or console.

Interest Check:
I am wanting to hold a casual duel mode tournament for members of the forums. Its open to all skill levels and you don't have to pay a dime! I have a a pro account and can create a server for you and your opponent relative to your area and use premium maps. Depending on the amount of people wanting to participate it would be a blind double elimination tournament where only members dueling have to be present. All times would be set up between opponents as long as its within a reasonable time frame (don't schedule a match 3 months out).

Rules
  • Duel Mode
  • 10 minute round, the one with the most frags wins
  • Normal Quake Live rule set (movement, weapon switching, footsteps)
  • Map should contain red armor and mega health
  • All games must record a demo (both players) and sent to me. The files are usually 3 megs and this is so I can upload replays or review matches.
  • Blind Double Elimination - initial matches are random and you have two chances before being knocked out. This means a minimum of 20 minutes required.

I believe you should be able to get it to work. After a quick google search it seems early versions of firefox (pre ver 7) and chrome had issues that people had to work around.

Its called Clan Arena but some things are changed like starting armor/health, fall damage, etc. There are a couple of the smaller arenas but the rules aren't set up for 1vs1 RA rules.

Does Quake 3 have a community anymore? Reinstalled this after over a year and there are only 2 good duel maps and 1 good CTF map left for free users.

e: And there might be none in the next month. Free users now have 24 maps which rotate monthly. So have fun learning a duel map and then not seeing it for 6 months!

Carmack said in the last quakecon, if I remember correctly, that QL was a commercial failure and implied it wasn't going to get much attention from them.

That implies it had any to begin with. All those companies thinking that F2P is some sort of magic engine that will work by itself and be really profitable with no effort put in are now (hopefully) realizing the error of their ways.

They have nobody to blame but themselves and their bizarre subscription model. Not allowing a monthly billing cycle was such an idiotic decision that put off a huge amount of people.
