After six albums, Tegan and Sara have gone out of their way to give themselves a new sound. And after listening to it for a bit I wouldn't say that it completely surprises me by the direction they've taken. It sort of feels like Sainthood with even more synthesizers. I don't think they'll ever top So Jealous, but I don't think they really need to, as I've really enjoyed singing along to their latest albums all the same.

I feel like the standouts are Closer, I Was A Fool, and Now I'm All Messed Up.

1. Closer
2. Goodbye, Goodbye
3. I Was a Fool
4. I'm Not Your Hero
5. Drove Me Wild
6. How Come You Don't Want Me
7. I Couldn't Be Your Friend
8. Love They Say
9. Now I'm All Messed Up
10. Shock to Your System

Bonus tracks
11. Guilty As Charged
12. I Run Empty

Here's the music video for "Closer" which isn't the best representation of Heartthrob in my opinion, but still a strong song.

The album (without bonus tracks) is streaming on Rolling Stone (and other places probably because it is a Soundcloud thing) so if you, like me, are waiting for February for the album to 'drop' then you don't really have to any more.

The album is honestly really REALLY good. The girls mostly worked with notorious producer Greg Kurstin (every pretty good pop album in the last 7 years) and it is an instant Top 5 contender of 2013.

Particular standouts are ‘Closer’, ‘Goodbye Goodbye’, ‘I Was A Fool’, ‘I’m Not Your Hero’, ‘Drove Me Wild’, ‘How Come You Don’t Want Me’, ‘I Couldn’t Be Your Friend’, ‘Love They Say’, ‘Now I’m All Messed Up’ and ‘Shock To Your System’.

the sea was angry that day, my friends

I was following them for a while but stopped shortly after The Con came out. That album was good, but kind of forgettable. So Jealous was my absolute favorite of theirs (I still listen to this one regularly), and I quite enjoyed the first 3 albums as well.

So based on that information: will I enjoy Heartthrob? Should I give Sainthood a try as well?

edit: Listening to Closer and it's a little too synth-heavy for my taste Not that I don't enjoy synthpop. I love it. I'm just used to the guitar sounds of T&S, and this is a little jarring. Is the rest of the album like this as well? If so, I guess I'll skip it.

If you have even a mild liking for synth-pop you would like this. It is very synth-heavy but you should at least listen to it once. Up to you though.

It's still a Tegan and Sara album lyrics- and material-wise.

Sainthood has some loving incredible hooks on it and will get stuck in your head almost immediately, give it a shot!

After previewing it at Rolling Stone and listening to the youtube album trailer I'm pumped! I absolutely love "Closer" and the rest seem just as good if not better!

YOU MAY BE STUPID BUT YOU'RE NOT A NEWBIE GODDAMMIT

My longest lasting female relationship is with these gals. I previewed the album, I was surprised at how quick is was over, 32 minutes or something like that but it is going to need some more time to sink in with me. I adore Sainthood and So Jealous, so I just need to find my way into it.

I've been a huge fan for years and years and years now. I was pretty wary when the title was announced to be Heartthrob, and when I saw that pre-order 'teeny-magazine' I nearly lost all faith.
The album is good though. It's different, and while I would've preferred another 'The Con' I'm still happy to see the girls trying out new things and new sounds.

Maybe Kris can come in, and we can throw M-80s at his asshole.

I'm pretty disappointed in Heartthrob. A lot of the songs don't need to be synth-pop and are quite obviously forced into the sound.

You know, I thought you were jumping the gun when I initially read this but I've been really enjoying this album, and have since changed my favorites to Goodbye, Goodbye, Drove Me Wild, Shock To Your System, and the first bonus track Guilty As Charged.

This album is fun as hell and I absolutely cannot wait to see Tegan and Sara at Coachella.

I agree.

I wish they'd pop over to Europe too sometime, and I mean a tour thing not a single festival appearance or something.

I went into this album hating it, but ended up putting it on repeat for a few hours. Totally smashed my expectations!

The album is great. How Come You Don't Want Me is such a good song. I'm so happy they are finally coming back to Sweden, it's been over two years.

The good thing is that when they play it live they'll probably scale that back, so even if you don't enjoy the album version, it's likely you get a different version live.

Edit: Oh and Shock To Your System, also great.

Heartthrob is two dollars on Amazon MP3 today.

US only though, unfortunately. But a no-brainer otherwise.

I really like this direction they took, the echoing vocals mixed with the synthy accents remind me of Ladytron. I like Ladytron.

Yea, this is how I feel. I think The Con is one of my top 10 albums of all time. Sounds like it's trying to be club music.

You clearly don't listen to club music but that's okay. Just because there's synth doesn't mean it's a four to the floor banger, which none of the tracks are even close to. Unless it's '85.

Doing my first listen-through right now on Spotify, and I'm really digging it. I really liked So Jealous and The Con, and both of those had different approaches from each other, so Heartthrob's the same way. The same Tegan and Sara song structure and lyricism with a new style to the backing. And it sounds really good.

Closer is catchy as gently caress. Really enjoyed the rest of the album too but keep getting Closer stuck in my head.

Just got back from the Vegas show. I'm pretty sure they played every song from Heartthrob with a few songs from Sainthood and some older stuff to mix it up. I dig Heartthrob from cover to cover but most of the songs from the album were taken to another level played live. A really really strong show all-around.
