I waffled back and forth about starting a log, but I think it will be good for me, so here goes.

Stats!
- 32 33 years old
- lady
- 5'9"
- 168lbs (as of today)
- sz 10 jeans (they're tight)

I grew up thin. I ate whatever I wanted, and I was 118lbs when I went to college at 17. That was probably too thin, but it's ok because I gained the freshman 15 from lovely cafeteria food and ended up at 130. My mother once told me to "be careful because one day you'll wake up fat." She was, unfortunately, correct. Thanks a lot mom!

I got married in 2004 (140lbs) and promptly put on weight. Husband loved eating out and I was glad to actually be able to afford food and never really learned how to eat right due to my freakish metabolism which disappeared in my mid twenties. And then I got pregnant. Twice. At my heaviest I was 206 lbs just before my second child was born. (In my defense she ended up being 9 lbs 4 oz.)

In 2011 I said, to HELL WITH THIS FATNESS and started working out, eating at a deficit and generally cleaning up my act. I took off 20 pounds and slimmed to a size 10 at 155 lbs. New jeans. I was thrilled. And then I got pregnant again. I intended to work out through the pregnancy after my morning sickness wore off, but the reality is I didn't step foot back into the gym until three weeks ago when my youngest was 1. I started this year at 176lbs.

Gotta slim that body down and get rid of that soft fatness. My belly is my worst area, thanks a lot children. I hope you're grateful.

TOXX goals:
- run the Rock N Roll half marathon on May 19th without dying
- Achieve the ExRx.net novice level deadlift and squat by... April 21st. (for my goal size that is 135lb and 110lb respectively)
- NEW TOXX (3/22/13) Achieve the ExRx.net Intermediate level deadlift and squat by July 30th 2013. I've adjusted my goal weight up so that's 175lb and 140lb respectively.

BAM! deadlift toxx complete Feb 28th 135-lbs x 4
Squat toxx complete Mar 11th 110-lbs x 3 new lift goals above

I am a total weightlifting newbie and I don't even know if I can lift the bar yet, but I am game to try. I would also like to be able to fit back into a size 6 at some point in the next year. I am using MyFitnessPal (link) and Fitocracy (link), will be starting up the stripped 5x5 lifting program, and running until I nearly die on the off days.

Eta: fixed age, d'oh

Edit: I am taking pictures every two weeks to mark my progress. Side and back shots are in the rest of the log.

Thanks!

I am definitely excited/nervous about learning lifting weights. I have done some dumbbell exercises at home (one arm dumbbell deadlift, goblet squat, dumbbell bench press and shoulder press) but we have a miniscule weight collection which involves four 2.5lb weights and four 7.5lb weights. The highest I can go with that is 20 lbs, which I have done.

So, if the bar is 45lbs and I've lifted two 20lb dumbbells, that isn't too large of a leap up, right? I'm still learning how all this stuff works - you only count the weight of one dumbbell but you're actually lifting 40lbs total. So one of my first goals is bench pressing my four year old son, he's about 45 pounds. I think the hardest part will be getting him to not wiggle around.

So far my worst fear is looking like a total idiot on the free weights side. Like, what if I can't figure out how to load weight onto the bar? Actually, at this point I'll be lucky if I can lift the bar without dropping it on my feet/face. After I manage to do it once I'll be fine, it's just building the nerve up the first time that's a bitch. But I am excited about changing how my body looks, permanently. I think I have a fairly solid foundation under all the fat, just gotta find a way to let it show. I mean, I do lift small children around every day.

edit:

today was a rest day, but I did some moving around, just 'cause.

Walked up the stairs (in lieu of the elevator):
- 10 floors
- Walked up and down stairs (5 both way) to try working through my DOMS.

I am suuuuuper sore in my hips from running on the treadmill yesterday (my whole pelvic area has sort of been...clicky? since I had Baby O in Jan '12, but it is finally getting better). I had been doing just elliptical work (it burns more calories, you see) but with my friend sponsoring me for the half marathon and registering me yesterday I knew I had to get serious. And wow, it is so different. I could bust out a 5k in 30 minutes on the elliptical. I got nearly 2.5 miles in 37 minutes on the treadmill. Not terrible but not great. Still, it was day one.

Also I live near a golf course with a track around it so I will be utilizing that as soon as I figure out what I need to wear on these cold rear end days.

Hah, I didn't even realize I made a mistake with my age until just now. I turned 33 in December, oops. But thank you! I will lift the weights. All the weights. (Maybe not all at once.)

Two years ago when I was working out on the regular I was doing HIIT and lifting with machines between ten minute stints on the elliptical. But that was two years ago, and I never lifted a lot of weight, that I remember. Also, vacuuming while holding a child sized weight might help? I really don't know!

We are planning on going to Hawaii next summer for our ten year anniversary and I want to be able to wear a bikini without thinking about it. Heck I want that for THIS summer. Gotta get to work. I don't even know if my gym has cages or squat racks or whatever those wonderful things are called. I usually walk by the free weights without looking at it too hard because [insert bizarre reasoning here]. I did look while walking by last week and they do have benches. I tried out the assisted weight pull-up machine too, that was fun. (LA Fitness for what it's worth, used to go to Ballys but they disappeared during my hiatus )

Today is the day! Starting stripped 5x5 workout A, equipment willing.

I am a Dinosaur

Just wanted to give encouragement! I am a fellow 33 year old goonette mom (of 2), and you can do it! I'm 5'5" and went from ~190lbs, size 16, in May of 2012 to 145lbs, size 6-8, by Thanksgiving 2012. At my most pregnant, I was about 220lbs. I used MyFitnessPal and did brisk walking with hand weights, or pushing a stroller. You CAN do it!!

You CAN lift the weights! You are probably a lot stronger than you think you are, and can lift more than you think you can. Hauling around children, grocery bags, infant carriers, pushing strollers, jamming strollers in and out of trunks, vacuuming, etc... all count for more than people give credit for. My arms and shoulders have pretty good definition, now that they aren't covered in a squidgy layer of fat, and the only weights I lift are named Tim and Liam.

Best of luck doing the half marathon. That is too ambitious for my blood--go Mom Power, go!

I didn't have one, because I'm a chicken, but I decided half measures weren't going to get me anywhere except back to the couch loathing my existence. I'm done with that!

Today I did the stripped 5x5 workout B, mainly because all that was available was a cage (?) and I couldn't figure out how I was going to do deadlifts. I did do a couple inside the cage just for the hell of it but I'm pretty sure that is not what it's for because obviously you can't put the barbell on the ground. Bonus points, there was a girl doing squats at the same time, though she was several years younger, pounds lighter, and lifting more. It helped me not feel quite so weird though.

I posted on Facebook about how I did 100 jumping jacks and she messages me to tell me to be careful because jumping jacks might make my lady parts fall out. She had to have vaginal prolapse surgery in the 80s and she had been apparently doing a lot of jumping jacks! I had to tell her that my pelvic floor was safe due to kegels. But it was pretty funny because she was so concerned.

You should find your first benchpress and other movements with the bar much easier than you expect. Because you have to stabilize DB with many muscles in your arms, the maximum you can lift with DB is about 80-90% of what you can lift with a bar. I think those are about the right percentages.

That's good to know. I didn't get to try benching with the bar yesterday because the gym had three non-in/declined benches and they were being used. Although maybe the inclined ones just needed to be straightened out? Gym equipment is so foreign.

Going to go run today, when the husband gets home from work. Maybe after dinner, at this rate. I prefer mid afternoon workouts, but it's just not possible all the time because his schedule varies from day to day. My running is sort of terrifying me because I'm so bad at it and I've committed to that half marathon, but I have to take a deep breath and tell myself I've just done it a few times and I'm going to keep getting better.

I need to get an armband for my iPhone though. It's on the list.

So I ran like that $100 entrance fee for the half marathon was chasing me, and I went five whole minutes without stopping to walk, so that's like a PR. I'm in so much trouble, haha. But I kept going, running when I could and walking when I couldn't and I'll keep getting better at it. Or, you know, die and fail my toxx.

I tried averaging out the speed but it was probably closer to 4.5 because I was walking at 3.7 and running at 5 mph. And I thought I set the incline to one but when I was cooling off I looked and it was at 1.5, whoops.

Thanks! I think I could have gone heavier on the deadlift but since its my first time I just kept upping it by ten for each set. I was dripping sweat by the end of the workout, that means its a good workout, right?

The OHP was fun, it was sort of amazing to look in the mirror and see myself with the bar over my head!

I am having trouble eating all my protein but I'm doing the best I can. We need to do some grocery shopping but the $ is pretty low so we have to wait until payday. That means its pretty much "scrounge up whatever you can" mode here, but at least Friday is just one day more. Plus the protein powder my husband bought is strawberry which is like, my least favorite. I had some today with chocolate syrup in it, don't tell anyone.

Don't worry about the protein. Sure, it will have an impact at some point, but I'm definitely not even getting 0.75x my bodyweight and my lifts are going up like crazy still. I do make an effort to get more protein than normal, but I'm sure I don't get more than an average of about 100-120g a day. Just eat it when you can and work hard, the lifting gains will come.

I know I'm eating more protein than normal because I'm actually thinking about it when I'm getting food into me, which is different. I need to figure out how to add vegetables in in a way that I will enjoy (I don't like veggies) and that my husband will not mutiny at. It feels like he would rather spend our grocery dollars in the frozen food aisle than the fresh fruits and veggies aisle. He has never been 'normal weight' as long as I've known him, and he's told me that since he grew up poor, many times eating just rice and beans for dinner, that once he got a job and was supporting just himself that he made the decision to eat what he wanted when he wanted to.

It is hard to turn that sort of thinking around, and without support from him I can't do much. It is too hard to go against a strong willed Scorpio, haha, which is sort of how I got this fat.

Going running later today, probably tonight. Husband will be home late from work today. The last thing I want to do is go running, ugh.

Yes I have, and he is being supportive as far as being home and watching the kids while I go to the gym, which is so great I can't even tell you. I am a stay at home mom and in a usual week I maybe go out of the house on my own....oh... NEVER. We have yet to go on a grocery shopping trip since I decided to try losing weight again, but I am used to writing down a list of things to get from the store for meals and such only to have him pick and choose what he deems is necessary from the list. I understand we can't afford everything all the time, so... I dunno. It's just frustrating.

He has made a bet with his brother about losing weight and getting fit though, so hopefully that will help turn things around in his head. They are planning on doing p90x, which we have owned for years but never done (I did it for a week!). He put up the pull up bar though! Progress!

Ok enough e/n, sorry about that. Workout time! Did not want to run. I was a grumpy lump today. Finally got a chance to go to the gym to run at 8:30 after the kids were out to bed. Ran 6 minutes straight then got a cramp, so there was a lot of walking, then running for 30 s to a minute, then walking. Finally got the side cramp worked out and was feeling better, and got a shooting pain in my hip. I was close to 30 minutes so I just walked the rest of it out.

This might not be it, but sometimes I will over hydrate before a run and that almost always cause cramps / stitches for me. Might be something to look out for if it happens again.

Beginner runners unite! I'm happy about him committing to get fit, I hope that he follows through. First of the month means a ton of work for him but I hope he can get started soon! He actually told me that he has "a whole weight set" somewhere. I'm not sure if its buried somewhere in this house it at his mom's house. So if that turns out true then we'd just need to get a squat rack and a bench.

I was excited about this until I saw how much squat racks are. Still, something to work toward. Then I wouldn't even need a gym membership anymore, because I have an outside place to run on (when it isn't dark).

This might not be it, but sometimes I will over hydrate before a run and that almost always cause cramps / stitches for me. Might be something to look out for if it happens again.

I will try that next time! I thought maybe it was because it was after dinner (not immediately after but still).

Thanks for the encouragement Pip Pip Pip! I needed it.

I did do something a little fun, here is the video evidence:

http://youtu.be/57ntHosl01w - bench pressing my 3 yr old and 4.5 yr old. He chose the music we were listening to.

Edit: I need to figure out some nicknames for them

The kids or the kid exercises? How about Gnomish Bench Press? Or for the 3 yr old - Gnomish Bench Press and for the 4.5 yr old Dwarvish Bench Press. Or since it's on the floor and not the bench, Gnomish Press Ups?

Beginner runners unite! I'm happy about him committing to get fit, I hope that he follows through. First of the month means a ton of work for him but I hope he can get started soon! He actually told me that he has "a whole weight set" somewhere. I'm not sure if its buried somewhere in this house it at his mom's house. So if that turns out true then we'd just need to get a squat rack and a bench.

The kids! But I like the exercise names, that is awesome. I've used the baby for goblet squats before so maybe Goblin Squats, haha.

I will log it next time! I even OHP the girl the other day. She's 33 pounds. Son is too afraid of heights for that, he squeals and tries to glom onto my head.

I almost didn't go because it was getting so late but I did. Just got back! Feels great, man. I felt a ton more confident in my squat, I just wish that the Smith machine wasn't set up right behind the rack so that a bunch of guys might have been staring at my rear end the whole time. Or maybe I liked it.

Edit: I should also mention that when I started working out and eating less a month ago my waist was 33 inches and now it's 31 inches. I don't remember if I was flexing my abs when I measured the first time or not, though. I was last time I measured, about two weeks ago? and it was 32 inches then, so that's at least an inch gone. The scale hasn't moved much but I'm pretty happy.

Yesterday ended up being a rest day rather than a run around the track day, and I took a two hour nap which was wonderful. We went to a hockey game so I did quite a bit of walking around.

Today is also a rest day + eat too much most likely. But it was also weigh in day! 166lbs today, -2 from last week's 168lbs.

Good workout, I just need to stop doing Russian twists on deadlift day. I need to engrave it on my forehead along with 'sit up straight!' Some girls were using dumbbells between my rack and the one next to me, and I had to ask them to move so I could put weight on/take it off/not hit them with the bar. I'm not sure why they weren't using the other parts of the mirror.

This happened to me this morning! But I didn't ask them to move and ended up hitting (well, bumping) one of them with the bar.

Welcome to my fitness log!

I also have an irrational fear that when I take weight off the bar that it will unbalance and make a ton of noise as it falls...then everyone turns to look just as the end hits me in the face or something. I'm pretty sure this will in fact, not happen, unless I suddenly start lifting two plates and take them off unevenly. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.

Going to do cardio today, not looking forward to it. Must do it anyway.

I know you can leave at least two 45-lb plates and a 25-lb plate alone on one side of the bar without it tipping. Haven't had the guts to push it further than that yet.

I suppose I will find out when I start lifting 315-lbs or so. You know, in a few years never.

I did get to use the 25-lb plates yesterday, which was sort of exciting.
