Forgive my ignorance, what's special about these? Star notes with an interesting (123) serial?

I've been going through my grandfather's, father's, my newly acquired :( coin collection. There are some interesting pieces in here, but overall most of them are really badly worn. Thankfully, the crown jewels of the collection, a bunch of Morgan dollars from the the 1890s, aren't that worn, but a little dirty, they've definitely seen circulation. My sister insists it would be better to clean them before taking them to a coin dealer, and thinks that a normal silver jewelry cleaning agent would work best, since anything of note is 90% silver anyways. Is she only a little wrong or is she super wrong?

super wrong, don't clean them
and post them here first so you don't get ripped off when you shove them at the first brick and mortar coin dealer you see and go "what'll ya give me"

I've done a little research, and won't be selling them until I've done a lot more. So far I have learned that coin website listed values vary wildly, and that similar coins to these seem to be bought and sold on ebay for like $25, give or take. There is a wild variety of heavily worn coins, dollars down to pennies. Most of the rest of the collection looks like the one on the bottom left below, and is generally not as old, sadly. From what I've been able to figure out, most of it seems to be worth slightly more than the silver content right now. I've checked for the special dates/mints and didn't see any of the super valuable ones. Unless I'm way off, I will probably just hold onto them for the time being.

Here are most of the Morgan dollars. There are actually a few more from 1921 that I didn't photograph.

You are right on - worth about $25 ea. And yeah, don't clean coins as it can ruin their collectible value. Those aren't even dirty at all, and a couple have already been cleaned or dipped.

The money is a 100 ruble note. Don't know if it's worth anything. The paper is a voucher/receipt like you get on cruises for a taxi. (If I understood my husband right.)

It's a 1993 100 Ruble Russian Bank note, it's worth less than $1 in this condition, the part you called the back is actually the front, on the left it shows the Kremlin, and then on the back is the Kremlin and Spasski Tower
I'm just quoting from the reference book, I don't actually know what a spasski tower is

So who wants to see a goonette's bald beaver? :haw:

No, really, that's what they're called, apparently.

I got a jar of Canadian change from the 60's thru 90's from a friend who'd moved from northern upstate NY, where Canuckistan currency is often passed along as "eh, good enough" when it comes to change. This thread taught me that Canadian dimes and quarters minted pre-1968 have some silver, so I was picking through them and found this guy. While a 5 cent, the shape's a little different from modern 5 cent pieces, so I looked it up and... yeah. Bald Beaver.

As long as we're talkin' Canadian coins: I have a 1929 5 cent, and it appears to have two variants, "near" and "far" rim. I've been studying pics and can't tell the drat difference. Any help?

Mine:

And here's what's supposed to show the difference (scroll down a bit for their comparison):

looks like a far rim to me, note the distance between the S and the rim and the pointed nature of the S in the near rim variety

I think part of the problem is that someone gold-plated it, which reduces collector value.

Yeah Eisenhowers were produced in large numbers and were never very popular except in casinos. Plus it's only 40 years old and isn't silver.

I agree. A coin's market value isn't always the best indicator of how cool it is. I collect coins and a lot of my favorites aren't even close to being my most valuable.

It's a problem you think we need to explain ourselves.
Forgive me if this has been covered already, but is it worth it to get your more valuable coins graded and encased? My father and I collected coins when I was a kid, and I remember having some slightly valuable coins. Nothing over, say, $150, but I have a number of walking liberty, barber quarters, morgan dollars, eagle pennies, and a 1995 double die penny. Looks like the grading fee is around $20, plus shipping, plus whatever else, so unless you have a three legged buffalo or 1916 D mercury dime it doesn't seem like a good value.

Ron Don Volante
Dec 29, 2012

The grading fee is actually going to be end up closer to $40-50, when you add in the additional fees, shipping and insurance. That's if you're using one of the two top third-party grading companies, PCGS or NGC. Any of the other companies are no longer worth using. I would personally not submit anything worth less than $400 or so, though if you're not planning on selling the coins I suppose it doesn't make much of a difference either way.

I usually buy from places that offer free shipping like SilverTowne or JM Bullion. You wana pay as close to spot as possible. Coin shops are usually more expensive due to taxes but are great if you don't wanna leave a paper trail. I usually sell poo poo on eBay.
