24th Kras'Kerz (Tu'Mar) 12082 FC![]() A very rough map of Pollett. Scale is 10ft to each square, and all the villagers (yourself included) are in the right hand clearing, near the tree. Better map incoming when something happens. It is a glorious day in the town of Pollett. No, it isn't harvesting time, or time to shear the various animals, or even Market Day. This is a day when four brave villagers have finally earned their qualifications to adventure, and become men. And customers. The town common is now crowded, as Pollett prepares to enact its ancient coming of age ritual. Today is the day where the Polls, the retired adventurer population of Pollett, and their families, enact what they believe to be the true meaning of Thrain's Calling. A meaning that involves the only coming of age the Polls care about : Becoming an adventurer. The two established clerics of the village, Bette (of Navinger), and Elgin (of Skraad, the Smith of Destiny) growl and mutter behind your backs at each other for a little while, but whatever argument they are having this time ceases, and they walk, stiffly and proudly, to your sides. Bette begins "Today, darlings, we enact an ancient ritual. It represents, in a way, the close familial ties we all shared when we were young..." there is laughter from the villagers. Bette continues. "...Yes, this is a proud time, when the sons of the village, whether figurative or literal, have finally learned the skills to survive. So, without further ado, I hand you over to Smith Elgin, who shall begin the ritual." Amazingly, you can almost hear the grinding of her teeth as she says this. Smith Elgin, in the proper ordained clothes of his clergy (smith's apron, large lump hammer, leather cap, all smoky from work) steps forward, as does Bette. This is the part you weren't looking forward to. "THEY'RE EATING US OUT OF 'OUSE AND 'OME!" Smith Elgin's voice is ear-shattering, and your (ritual) proximity isn't helping. "SAY WHAT YOU LIKE, I'M RATHER FOND OF 'EM, YOU NEVER DO ANY WORK AROUND HERE ANYWAY!" Bette's voice, similarly, is shrill and piercing. "DOESN'T MATTER, YOU BLOODY SLATTERN, THEY'RE OUT ON THEIR EARS NOW, MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT!" "'OW DARE YOU, YOU SMELLY OLD GIT, I'LL GO BACK AND -" Bette's voice is thankfully interrupted. Unluckily, it is by Elgin, for the final part of the ritual. "YOU'RE NOT GOIN' ANYWHERE, WIFEY DARLIN', AND BESIDES, THEY'RE LONG GONE!" Elgin's voice finally subsides, although the ringing in your ears from the exchange takes longer. The villagers cheer, hand you the traditional plate of "Going Away Tidbits" (A hefty plate of roast boar-meat, carrots, and potatoes, with mint gravy and a pint of ale), and raise mugs to the sky before the party begins. You're not actually expected to leave until the morning, but it is a long-standing tradition in the village that, once you become an adventurer, you are to be sent to fend for yourself. It builds character, after all! Hokay, welcome to the story, folks. Standard format is Italics for OOC stuff (or, if it's not part of a combat, and is a question about rules, put it in the recruitment thread, which shall double as the OOC thread), Bold for your name, then normal text for your actions. My own will be, put simply, bold, followed by italics for OOC info. For example: - Manus is quite surprised to note that his mentor, the battle-mage Adiron (Human, Battle-Mage, mainly favours Divination/Illusion spells) is quite happily munching on a roast boar sandwich with a glass of whisky in his hand!

Manus Taking a swig of ale, Manus walks over to his mentor. "Well this is it you old codger." Manus nearly shouts at Adiron. "I figure that seeing me leave before I talked with you one last time would break your old heart. So, Anything to say for yourself before we ditch this hovel?"

Brother Wi’Tu Teng Brother Wi'Tu Teng has looked forward to this day for some time. The day he goes out in the world, to hone his skills both martial and culinary. To explore the wild wide world. With a laugh that shakes his belly he thanks the two clerics for their ritual. "Thank you, thank you for seeing us off with such a beautiful ritual."

Perry Fiddlebrick Perry took his plate after the ceremony and quickly found a place to sit. The celebration was tonight but he knew that the real party would start in the morning. He downed the ale first, then moved on to the meat and potatoes of the meal. This would be the last day, he thought to himself, that he'd be stuck underfoot. Tomorrow, he'd start rebuilding an empire.

Sanji of Bishou Sanji joined the crowd in their applause, and raised his mug to Bette in a silent toast. His senior priest had taken care of him ever since he'd stumbled into town, fleeing the wrath of his sister and her Grel allies. "Thank you for everything, Lady Bette, you've always been kind to me." The ale was drained in seconds, and the half-elf looked for more.

Sanji - "Ah, my child, you have always been one of our best students in the ways of love. Remember, my little hen, that you are to declare your love, written, spoken, or sung, once a week. If things are difficult, I'm sure Navinger will understand, but do your best, and bring harmony, in the name of Navinger." Bette's smile is something legendary, even outside of the village, and she turns its full force on you, making you all aflutter. Bette has cast Bless on you. Also, I need your prayed-for-spells for the day. Perry - Having lived in this village for some years, you note with amusement how incapable everyone is slowly getting, including... Your mood sours, as you realise that even those who keep watch are here at this party, and resolve to keep a firm eye out... ...That patience is rewarded, when, among the foliage on either side of the route toward the main road, you spy... something... the mottled grey skin clearly marks it as diseased, at the very least, and their shapes are definitely tall-folk... Rolled against your Wisdom, and you manage to spot... well, you don't actually know what they are, but if they're hiding, odds are they're hostile... numbers unknown. Manus - Adiron draws himself up to his full height (an amazing feat, considering his dodgy back), and looks imperiously on his apprentice. "You are by no means the best student I have had over the years, but you have the potential to be better than he who came before you. Keep your urges in check against all but your enemies, my little drunken sneak-thief, and you shall do well. Do badly..." he flickers a small fireball into his hand, before deliberately discarding the spell for the day contemptuously "...and I shall be most displeased." Wi'Tu Teng - Bette is busy with Sanji, but Father Elgin grins broadly. "Well, lad, I'm sure you're goin' to do us proud in the morning, leaving with proper pomp and circumstance, and I'm sure you'll do well afterwards. I do think it's a bit funny that the monks aren't here to see you off, but they've always been a bit odd like that, so don't let it get you down!" Elgan leans forward, and states, in a low voice "By the way, if you happen to come across anything in your travels, like, say, a better smithing hammer, I'll give you top price for it." Never having seen this ritual performed, you aren't to know, sadly, that Elgin always says this to somebody, and he has yet to receive a better hammer...

Manus Manus swallows nervously. "Heh heh, easy now old timer. No need to get yourself all worked up. Wouldn't want to throw your back out again now would we?" He looked around for anything that he could use to ease his master's temper. The mug in his hand gave him an idea. "A toast!" Manus cheered at Adiron, "To you and me. May we never have to meet again under ill-circumstances." Or at all Manus thought to himself.

Perry Another slug of the mug and the ale was gone, just in time for his eyes to wander over to the poor wretches that seem to want crash the party. Up on two feet and sword drawn to the ready, he wandered a bit closer to where those mottled skinned beings were approaching from. "Ay! Announce yerselves quick. Party's invitation only..." Should they continue to advance, I'd like to try and intimidate them into stopping.

Sanji "I shall, Lady Bette, but how shall I find any more deserving of my love than you? You have shown me more kindness than ever I've received from family." While Sanji's smile lacks the power of his mentor, he gives her what he can, bowing deeply. Their moment is interrupted, however, by Perry's challenge, and the half-elf frowns and peers in the same direction as his fellow neophyte adventurer. "Surely just more villagers here to see us off?" he ventures. Spells: Cure Light Wounds x2, Command Izzy fucked around with this message at Feb 6, 2013 around 03:29 |

For a tense few moments, Perry's challenge goes unanswered, but then a gruff bass voice chuckles, and speaks from the darkness: "Very well, foolish Poll... We shall reveal our hand early, and join your celebration! Kill them all, then burn the village!" The darkness in between the trees resolves itself as several corpses step into the light. There's something strange about the one in the lead, although, in the early evening light, it's somewhat hard to tell exactly what that is. The bass voice continues chuckling as it recedes deeper into the woods. Horrifyingly, the corpses resemble people from a neighbouring hamlet, just a few short miles away... ![]() Yup, it's combat time! Initiative order is as follows, please declare your actions (Party members bolded for ease of use)! Perry: 10 (Dead last, action won't actually take place till next round.) Bette: 10 Sanji: 8 (No weapon drawn, so just a straight d10, +1 for waiting.) Adiron: 8 Zombies: 7 Manus: 6 (Kinda took you by surprise. I'm going to ignore the "shout SPELL!" rule here, for obvious reasons...) Elgin: 5 Special Zombie (Unknown Monster Type): 5 Wi'Tu Teng: 4 (First PC...) Assorted Villagers: 3 EDIT: Fershlugginer initiative! It's actually lowest goes first. So Perry, you're dead last. Dagnabbit. JamieTheD fucked around with this message at Feb 5, 2013 around 01:35 |

Brother Wi’Tu Teng Wi'Tu Teng shakes his head at the sadness of what must have happened to the neighboring hamlet. He walks up to the nearest walking corpse, sadly intoning. "Fear not child your suffering will not last long, let me put you to rest." Once he gets within range of the undead he strikes out with an open hand nearly faster than the eye can follow. Going to walk up to the nearest undead and punch it in the face. Not sure if you wanted to roll or wanted us to roll. But I rolled just in case. Unarmed Attack 1d20+1 9 which would probably miss unless they have like AC 10. If it did hit it would be 1d4+2 5

To make sure people know, yes, you rolling your own combat and skill stuff is fine by me. Also, I'm going to spoil right now that a 9, from a monk, wouldn't hit a Common Zombie (which is what you're going to be beating on)... EDIT: ...However, that +2 from charging (which is what you're doing) pushes that over the edge... JamieTheD fucked around with this message at Feb 5, 2013 around 01:37 |

Sanji Zombies. Why did it always have to be zombies? Or monkeys. Or zombie-monkeys. Or just zombies, which these most definitely are. "F-foul creatures!" he called, his voice cracking as he raised his holy symbol high. "You enter a domain protected by the gawds! The power of Love shall not falter in your presence!" The zombies, however, seem unimpressed. "...crap." Turn undead! Roll a 3! Sanji fails miserably!

Perry Emboldened by his new found size, Perry charges the nearest zombie.(Or barring that, simply attacks the nearest one.) Charging attack vs. nearest Zombie: 1d20+8 13 Damage:1d6-1 3 * 1.1 + 11 = 14 (I had to do the math for the attack myself because I couldn't figure out how to not have Orokos give me an invalid dice string. Enlarged or not doesn't actually make much difference, but if I don't charge the attack is actually only 11)

The villagers are the first to react to the zombie horde, but, as you'd expect from a town of retired adventurers, they start running to the nearest weapon caches the village has. Old Griff, the head farmer of the village, yells over his shoulder as he sprints: "Delay them, young ones, and we'll help you push them back!". And then all hell erupts. Wi'Tu Teng sprints for one of the zombies, but is unable to stop it before it reaches Sanji. Luckily, it doesn't appear to be able do much before Sanji sprints in from the side, and, with a flying leap, kicks its head. He lands in between a zombie and its leader, with more closing in! Meanwhile, Elgin snaps off the leg of one of the feasting tables, and begins to run forward, rage clear in his eyes. Manus also starts forward, but only far enough to start casting a spell. As he finishes, the battlefield resounds to the eldritch tones of Adiron, as he creates several glowing balls (which look like skulls), and they streak forward to decapitate two zombies as they shamble forward. Perry, meanwhile, slashes at the crab, but is horrified to find that it deflects the blow with a single claw, and the corpse it seems to control actually grins! Bette calls out "Love the grave, and return!"... but it doesn't really have any effect. ![]() Combat round went as follows: 1, 2 - Staring match. 3 - Villagers begin moving to L2 and P2 respectively, whichever's nearest. 4- Wi'Tu Teng starts his charge 5 - Corpse Crab starts its movement (can't charge, because it's a god-drat zombie). Elgin breaks off a table end. 6 - Manus starts moving. Elgin starts his charge with an improvised weapon. 7 - Manus stops moving, begins casting. Zombies start moving. Corpse Crab reaches Perry 8 - Wi'Tu Teng attacks, hits, causes 5 damage to zombie at D15. Manus casts Enlarge on Perry. Adiron starts casting Magic Missile. 9 - Adiron casts Magic Missile, kills two zombies that were originally at F24 and H24. 10 - Perry attacks the Corpse Crab and misses... Oh dear. Bette begins a turn attempt, and fails, Elgin is still charging, and will hit the zombie next to Perry sometime next round... Zombies within 30 feet of Sanji or Perry reach them, the one who isn't is 10 feet away from Perry. Next round's initiative Elgin 1 (Still acting) Adiron 3 Perry 3 Corpse Crab 5 Bette 6 Sanji 6 Wi'Tu Teng 6 Zombies 6.5 Villagers 8 Manus 8 Map incoming in the morning, but suffice to say, one (damaged) zombies on Sanji, Corpse Crab and one zombie on Perry, One zombie on Wi'Tu Teng, one trying to reach Perry (Elgin will intercept next round), two down JamieTheD fucked around with this message at Feb 21, 2013 around 16:08 |
