Last year, I got somewhat serious about running. When I say somewhat serious, what I really mean is I ran about 10 or 15 times all year. I probably wouldn't have run more than 2 or 3 times if it wasn't for my girlfriend suggesting we sign up for the Miller Park 5k Sausage Race, which we did together. As the race got closer, I started to train a little bit more seriously. I did maybe 6 or so runs in the 2 or 3 weeks before the race. Finally race day came, and I realized that I wasn't really prepared for this. I hadn't done any kind of serious running in about 9 years. I used to run a lot early in high school, and whenever people would bring up running, I would say things like, "Oh, yeah, I used to run 4 miles a day in highschool!" As if my running from that long ago really had any bearing on my athleticism today. Realizing then that I wasn't that great of a runner, I was hoping to finish under 30 minutes, which I did. I crossed the finish line with a time of 27:27. I was pretty proud of myself at the time. I later found out, however, that I was in the bottom half (possibly bottom quarter) of males in my age range, and I felt pretty bad about that. For those of you not familiar with the Milwaukee Brewers, every game they have a "Sausage Race" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20K9CdAVxF4 That video is a bit dated, they now have a fifth sausage, Chorizo, that races also. Well, they had all five sausages race this last year in the 5k. I couldn't imagine wearing that huge outfit and running that distance. What I really couldn't imagine is that several of them beat me. One of the jerks that beat me: ![]() Of course, at the time, I didn't feel bad enough to really keep up with running. After the race, which was in late July, I only ran 3 more times all year. Now I'm deciding that this year is the year I take things seriously. I just got done with an 8 day vacation, and I did literally nothing. I laid on my rear end and didn't do a single god drat thing except for play video games and eat junk. And it made me feel like a turd. So I've made some goals for myself, and I'm making a log so that I'm held accountable to these goals. 1) Run Miller Park 5k Sausage Race in under 20 minutes (date unannounced) 2) Run a 10k sometime this year My Fitocracy: https://www.fitocracy.com/profile/monsieurfatso Stats: Age: 26 Gender: Male Weight: 154 Height: 5'11" Progress so far: 01/21/13: Distance: 2.33 miles Time: 22:24 Avg Pace: 9:37 01/27/13 Distance: 2.47 miles Time: 21:54 Avg Pace: 8:53 01/28/13 Distance: 3.19 miles Time: 26:16 Avg Pace: 8:14 My legs are feeling pretty gnarly after the run today, but in a good way. I'll probably just do an easy, but longer, run tomorrow. A side, nontoxx goal that will obviously help me achieve my toxx goals is to finally quit smoking. Over the past several months, I've definitely cut down, but I still had a quarter of a pack today, which is a quarter of a pack too much. Every time I get the running bug, my smoking does drop quite a bit. I'm hoping these goals have a symbiotic relationship and I can finally kick this habit in pursuit of a sub 20 minute 5k. edit: I forgot I was going to add this. For each of those two goals that I fail to meet, I will donate $25 to the Special Olympics. Good luck, dude. Sub-20 5k is one of my long-term goals that's eluded me so far (20:25 PR but then I got injured...again). You might find that a pre-existing training plan gives you some good forced structure and variety - Hal Higdon has a few 5k ones at different levels.

What's your plan to get there? When is the race? There's a pretty big hurdle from 25 min to 22 min 5K, and then from 22 min to 20. 20's my goal as well

I'll probably ramp back up to another round of HH Intermediate and see what that puts me at. Before starting C25k about a year and a half ago I probably hadn't run a <10:00 mile in my life, and "race magic" seems to be good for a full 1-2 minutes of total time compared to training for me. BTW, I found this site only when I started that last round of training, it might be handy if you go with an HH plan: http://www.yourtrainingcalendar.com/

Another Wisconsin running goon??? Maybe I should sign up for the Miller Park Sausage Race too, it sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and I did the Color Run at Miller Park last year and it wasn't too difficult. Where you located? I'm currently training for this 10k in April. My good friend does it (and wins it) every year and says it's a good "beginners" 10k. Good luck with your goals!

I live in Madison. I was thinking of signing up for the twilight run 10k on Memorial Day in Madison, but its the weekend a bunch of friends are coming to town for someones wedding. I'm not invited to the wedding (just don't know them too well), so maybe I'll do it because all my friends will be doing that that night anyways. We'll see how my running goes! Also, the Sausage race is pretty easy. Mostly flat, get to run on the field at Miller Park, which is pretty cool, and you get a free shirt, free game voucher, and a free beer, hotdog, and nuts at the end of the race. I've never heard of the color run. Just got back from running. Wanted to go the last couple of days, but there's been a lot of snow/wind. I don't mind running in the cold, but I don't trust my footing in the snow. Enough of it seemed either shoveled or packed down enough for me to run in today though. Went a little easier. I felt like I could have went faster, but I need to work on endurance just as much as speed. Plus, with snow still on the ground, I had to be very mindful of where I stepped throughout most of the run. I think this may have been the longest amount of time I've ever run without stopping. 02/01/13 Distance: 3.20 Miles Time: 33:03 Pace: 10:20 min/mi Temperature at time of run: 1F, windchill: -10F FEELS GOOD monsieur fatso fucked around with this message at Feb 1, 2013 around 22:55 |

Was kind of hard to run with all the snow on the ground. Feel like I could have easily shaved at least a minute or more off my time. A lot of my push offs resulted in my feet sliding on the snow. But since I'm not really trying to go for time, and just get my body used to exercising again, I'm not going to complain. Kind of bummed it's supposed to snow another three inches or so tonight, so I might not be able to get a good run in again for a few more days. I also seemed to get kind of tired pretty early on. I'm going to attribute this to eating like poo poo this morning and yesterday. All the more reason for me to tear into that bag of apples I just bought. 02/03/13 Distance: 3.40 Miles Time: 32:49 Pace: 9:39 Also, I tackled a hill today that I'd been meaning to climb. I was really huffing it about halfway up, but gave myself a little HTFU speech in my head and pushed through. The first part was especially hard with the snow on the sidewalk. The second half didn't have any snow, but it was much steeper. Felt good when I got to the top. View of the city/lake was amazing. ![]() Temperature at time of run: 18F, windchill 7F. monsieur fatso fucked around with this message at Feb 3, 2013 around 23:45 |

The weather has been poo poo this week. If it hasn't been freezing rain, it's been snowing. I don't have a problem with running in the cold, but if it's raining and turning to ice on the ground, or snowing, and covering up patches of ice on the ground. It's not happening. On the bright side, even though I didn't go running at all during the week, I sure as hell got enough exercise digging my car out. There was still a lot of ice on the ground running today. I tackled the same hill again today, but it was basically ice the whole way up. I was practically speed walking up the thing. Same with lots of areas in front of houses. It's not sheer ice, either. It's the kind that had once been slush, and refroze, and there are a million bumps and ridges in it from other people walking over it when it was slushy. Made my run a little slow. 02/09/13 Distance: 2.89 miles Time: 28:54 Pace: 9:59 I can't wait for it to warm up. Even just in the 40s would be nice. Even if it cools down again, just getting rid of all the ice/snow on the ground will help. The soft snow isn't too bad. It definitely slows me down, but I feel like it's good for training. It's like running in sand. monsieur fatso fucked around with this message at Feb 9, 2013 around 21:12 |

I know how you feel 100%. I can run outside when it's freezing cold, but gently caress this snow. No one bothers shoveling their sidewalks in Milwaukee, and the trail I usually run on is never plowed out either. I just want a few days of thaw to get rid of the snow, then it can be whatever temperature it wants to be as long as it never snows again this winter. I've just been running on a treadmill while there's snow on the ground. It's way less fun, but at least I'm able to get a few runs in without fearing I'll fall all over the place.

I had no business running today. Almost biffed it like 10 times on the ice. Thought the sidewalks would be better today, got up near 40 degrees, but they were probably the worst I've run in. I feel like I could have ran another mile, but around the 2.5 mile mark, I stepped on some ice that looked solid, and my left foot went right through into a pot hole full of freezing cold water. I decided after that that I had had enough for the day. Kind of bummed to. Was looking forward to the run today. It's supposed to snow tonight/tomorrow. Hopefully Friday or Saturday will be better. 02/13/13 Distance: 3.05 Time: 27:36 Pace: 9:03

gently caress yes. I feel great. Threw up in my mouth around the 3 mile mark. Just swallowed it and kept chugging along. Was feeling pretty winded right around that time. Slowed down slightly and it felt a lot better. I got near my apartment around 4.1 miles, but felt like I could keep going, so I kept running past the onto my street. Probably would have kept going further if my feet weren't starting to get wet from puddles/melting snow, and it was beginning to rain a little bit. Still, I feel loving awesome after this run. This is definitely the furthest I've ever run, and the longest amount of time I've ever run. Considering both those things, I'm very happy with my pace for today. After two miles I clocked in at 15:59. I know it's not great, but it's great for me. 02/18/13 Distance: 5.21 miles Time: 44:31 Pace: 8:33

Saying that, what is your training plan, what are you doing for speed work, when are you going to take recovery days and how fast/how long do you plan on doing long runs right now? Because doing consecutive workouts of your longest run ever isn't the best plan and can really lead to burnout or injury. In my opinion running planet has some of the best guides I've seen and a large list of different workouts to try. Keep on doing what you're doing but look at different resources to help plan what you'll do in a week and month.

Honestly, right now I haven't given too much thought to training plans because of the weather. There are too many days that running isn't really an option (for me) and trying to stick to any kind of training plan is going to just end up falling apart. I know going on longest ever runs on consecutive runs probably isn't the best idea, but my legs feel great. The day after my four mile run, it didn't even feel like I had run at all. My legs are kind of tired right now after my 5 miler today, but they still don't really feel that bad. I guess right now I'm just trying to work up endurance, but you're right, I should fit some shorter runs in there. I will definitely look at running planet though. Thanks! Today I just felt really good while running. I didn't plan on going out and running for as long as I did. It just ended up happening because I didn't feel too fatigued and felt like I could keep going at a comfortable pace. I've forgotten to mention in my posts, my smoking has really been cut back with my running. Only 4 in the last two days. I'm sure my speed/endurance will improve so much more if I can finally kick this terrible habit.

Snow and travel has kept me from running for a bit, but I made sure to get out there today. Run wasn't that great. Had some tightness in my left leg on the outside, couple inches above my ankle. Stopped a couple times during the run to try and stretch it out, but it didn't really help at all. My right hip wasn't feeling too great either, felt like some sciatic pain that I get from time to time. Ended up being a slower run, but still felt good just getting out there. 02/25/13 Distance: 3.27 miles Time: 29:06 Pace: 8:54

I definitely messed something up in my ankle the last time out. I haven't gotten out in about two weeks now. Luckily there have been some big snow storms, so I wouldn't have gone running all that much if my ankle was feeling better. Regardless, I didn't want to go out and mess my ankle up any worse, so I took it easy and tried to let it heal up. It was strange, the pain was about halfway up my leg the first few days, and it slowly migrated down to my ankle. The pain is still mostly on the outside of my left leg. It's mostly gone, but sometimes if I run up the stairs or something I can feel some uncomfortableness in that area. I'm going to try and get out tomorrow and see if I can go 1-2 miles, but if it starts hurting right away, I'm not going to push it.

Okay, finally got out and ran today. Thought 30 F was warm enough to wear my shorts and some normal running wear plus a long sleeve biking shirt over it. Guess not. Running with the wind felt great and had no issues, but running against the wind sucked. Maybe a little too much information: my dick was freezing cold and it was painful running against the wind with just boxers and normal gym shorts My ankle felt fine today, so that's a good sign. My legs felt pretty heavy, but I attribute that that to not having run in almost 4 weeks. It looks like the weather is going to be kinda crappy for the next few days. Not sure if I'll get another run in again until thurs/fri. We'll see. I've realized that if the temp is 20-35F, I don't really have any good running gear. It's too warm to wear the stuff I was wearing when it was real cold, but too cold to wear shorts and two layers of moisture wicking shirts. If it's just kind of cool, and not raining/snowing, I'll probably just wear the heavier stuff, but I think we're getting 4 inches of snow tomorrow. 03/17/13 Distance: 2.26 miles Time: 19:34 Pace: 8:40 monsieur fatso fucked around with this message at Mar 18, 2013 around 02:15 |

I've gotten a few more runs in the last few weeks, but nothing special. I'll update with distances/times at some point. Just posting to say I'm still trying to keep at this, but my left leg is still hurting. When I first started, it was hurting kind of bad though, but I realized that as I ran faster, the pain decreased. Seemed kind of strange, but it got me going I guess. Still though, I haven't really had any runs further than 2 miles. That's usually about where I'll stop because my leg feeling kinda lovely. I've been meaning to make an appointment with a doctor sometime soon for some other issues, when I do, I'll bring up the leg pain as well. I also work with a doctor, and I'll ask him about it next time I see him, although he's gotten a new job cross country and won't be in as often (and I don't really want to bother him with my non-work related b.s.) monsieur fatso fucked around with this message at Apr 28, 2013 around 17:07 |

So I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to reach my goal of a 20 minute 5k by late July. The last two months were basically shot because of my ankle. I'm still going to shoot for it, but it's looking increasingly unlikely. I did get my first good run in a long time in today. Good as in I didn't have any pain in my ankle, not as in my time. I did 2 miles in 17 minutes. It felt good to get back out there and run. I had made a doctors appointment for my ankle a few weeks ago, but the soonest I was able to get in was May 3rd. I'm still going because I have some other health issues I want to speak to someone about, but I'm going to talk to him about my ankle as well. I looked up his bio on the clinic website. He's a young guy, about my age, but he's apparently an avid runner, so maybe he'll have some advice for me on that. One last thing: I forgot how much running in warm weather kind of sucks. It's only 63 degrees right now, but drat did I feel warm while running. Makes me miss the days of sub-zero weather.

Well, my ankle/leg has been sore the last few days. I had that doctors appointment today. He checked out my leg, and he said it seems to be tendinitis. He basically told me to ice it, and take a bunch of ibuprofen for the next 2 weeks. He also showed me a bunch of different stretches that he likes to do before running that may help prevent this from reoccurring.

Went for a pretty easy run this afternoon. 2.24 miles @ 22:50. At any hint of tightness in my legs I stopped and stretched and walked for a while. When I got home, I iced my legs for a bit. My legs don't even feel like I've done any exercise today, so I guess that's a good sign. Will probably just rest tomorrow and run again on Tuesday.
