YO THIS IS OLD. WE ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS UP IN THIS THREAD OVER HERE. A note from Keanu Grieves: Keanu Grieves posted:Here's a reason to use sirens and bolded, capital letters: Goons, thank you for joining me as we stand up against the Academy's wankfest with a wankfest entirely of our own! The Awards The CineByte awards are awards specifically for the film lovers of Cinema Discusso, cosen by the Cinema Discusso Academy. The CinemaDiscusso Academy is a group of posters chosen by the official Academy Governing Board, which is just the Current Releases crew. The plan is to announce the final nominees for each category in mid-January, then announce the winners during our annual Oscar celebration on February 24th! The CineBites vary slightly from the Oscars in that there are no “Best Animated Feature” and “Best Animated Short” categories. All Animated features are eligible for Best Picture nomination. Instead, we have “Best Animation” and “Best Vocal or Motion Capture Performance” categories. Also, there are some other special CineD specific categories, like Best Food/Meal Scene, and the Moral High Horse award. The goal of these awards is to foster interest and get more people to spread the word about films they love. Even if you're not a member of the Academy, please participate in this thread, by making arguments throughout about which films you think should win. Then, as the year progresses, if you see a movie you love and think deserves a 2014 CineByte award, get people to see it! Make a thread! Talk it up in General Chat! Tell people your reasoning, and participate in the forum! Then when it comes time to pick the academy next year, you may get called to the board. (Note to Academy Members: You'll be receiving e-mails soon telling you the instructions for submitting final winners. They will probably be a little more complicated than these instructions were, so please please PLEASE pay attention to the instructions this time, huh? Enough of this, it's time to announce The Final Nominees Note on the selection process: In order to be considered for the final nominees, a name had to be mentioned at least five times. Only one category came up short of considerable names. The top five most mentioned names for each category (Top ten for Best Picture) made the list of final nominations. If there was a tie for fifth place, both names were added to the list, so some categories have six nominations. Let's do this thing, yo. EDIT As part of the festivities, I would like it if certain people volunteered to be the announcers of certain categories. If you volunteer, you will receive an "envelope" e-mail before the day of the Oscars telling you the winner of your category. ONLY you and the person who calculated will know. On Oscar night, we'll announce the winners roughly on schedule with the actual announcements. If you'd like to write a speech, make a video, take a picture of yourself in a cool suit, that's great! The post will be all yours to do whatever, just announce the winner! I'd like to point out that this is NOT LIMITED TO ACADEMY MEMBERS. I'd prefer that it be a subject that you're fairly well-versed in, but you can pretty much do whatever. So if you'd like to volunteer for a category, let us know:The following categories are claimed: Best Picture: Professor Clumsy Moral High Horse: Vargo Best Trailer: Jay Dub Best Editing: BigBudgetSequel Best Actor, Lead and Best Actor, Supporting: Sir Kodiak Best Actress, Lead and Best Actress, Supporting: Keanu Grieves Best Makeup and Costuming: Penismightier Best Original Score: Hewlett Not-Crash: CPL. Here I thought I was going to have to have an internal debate over whether to vote for Silver Linings Playbook or Django, but since you guys decided to snub the best movie of the year, I guess it's Django all the way. Edit: I haven't heard of this movie: Vargo posted:Best Director

Things I'm incredibly disappointed in: No Jiro Dreams of Sushi in the "Best Food Scene" category. Best trailer of the year (Great Gatsby) got snubbed. Not a single drat nomination for Spider-Man or (probably more importantly) Perks of Being a Wallflower.

I assumed the "best trailer" went to trailers for films that came out in 2012, not 2013, or I would have also voted for Gatsby.

Crap, penismightier, can you fix the thread tag for me? I put so much work into this thread, too.penismightier posted:How the gently caress Jennifer Ehle isn't on that list. Peaceful Anarchy posted:Because unlike the real academy we don't get screeners, so instead of only nominating movies that come out in December our list has hardly any movies that came out in December. Exactly. I think Zero Dark Thirty got hosed the hardest overall, next to Silver Linings Playbook. (Seriously, you are all dicks for not seeing/loving/nominating that movie.)

CPL593H posted:If you don't mind my asking, how did you decide on members for this? A lot of bitching, catfighting, and arguing. Professor Clumsy, Jay Dub, Big Budget Sequel, Keanu Grieves, and myself, each listed 11 people we thought should be involved, making it a point to traverse outside of General Chat and pick up people who made contributions in other areas of the subforum. As I've said, I didn't agree with every choice, not everyone agreed with my choices. Some people were chosen because of their love of contrary opinions, some people were chosen because they loved mainstream cinema, some people were chosen because they were pro-comic book movie, some people were chosen because they were anti-comic book movie. We also tried to get a good mix of CineD newcomers and old mainstays. Really, we put a lot of effort into just picking those initial group, and then there were still moments of "OH poo poo WE FORGOT ____?" So, the idea was those 55 people, plus ourselves, made 60, which was a decent amount, we thought. But then some people declined or dropped out or never answered, and sometimes we went to backups. I don't know the exact number of people we have now, but it's about 40. I don't know how many people are still actively participating, though. Next year we'll probably add two or three more people to the "Governing Board" (penismightier, you will probably be one of them) and they'll get to pick another list of new members and we'll also each pick a handful of new people. Keanu Grieves posted:Nepotism. Seriously. And it WORKED. That's how Dickeye made the cut.

I haven't seen The Master (it only pre-opens here tonight, and I'm busy so I'll have to wait even longer for the actual opening), and I do get that it's probably mainly about Phoenix' character, but it still weirds me out a little that Hoffman is getting a "supporting" nomination for what I thought was the titular role of the movie. But awesome nominations all around, I was nodding all the way through as I read them.

With Netflix Instant always adding new ones and people being aware of the awards now I'm sure there will be enough of us who've seen a good chunk of documentaries over the course of the year. Also, I guess I better get on watching Dredd and End of Watch. Also, has Killer Joe received any awards notice this year? Like at all? Edit: Also, I'm kicking myself that I forgot to nominate Beyond the Black Rainbow for Best Original Score. Completely slipped my mind but it's amazing and should have been up there.

I feel like I achieved something with the AVENGERS ENSEMBLE campaign - especially consider how much of a damp squib that movie was on here. Yes, I'm going to keep saying AVENGERS ENSEMBLE because it's the catchiest thing I've ever come up with. AAAAAAAAAAAAVENGERSSSSS ENNNNNSEEEEEMBLE! Didn't This Must Be the Place even get nominated once, though? That film is so under-appreciated.
