What is Counter-Strike?

This ain't your brosef's FPS! From the previous thread:

quote:

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the newest remake/pseudo-sequel of Counter-Strike, the grandaddy of "realistic" multiplayer FPS's. This marks the third or fourth (depending on your perspective) remake of CS. For those unfamiliar with the franchise (all two of you, man how did you even find this thread??), CS is a fast-paced, tactical shooter, with a focus on extremely tight gun play. It's been around for a bit over a decade now, and has been one of the most popular multiplayer FPS franchises of all time.

For those returning from CS 1.6 or Source, CS:GO is an attempt to bridge the two games and bring the CS community, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. While there will always be weird spergs and strange eastern Europeans playing 1.6 or CS ProMod or whatever, the competitive community has begun to rally around CS:GO, with many ~pro~ players proclaiming it to be the future of CS.

This is also a classic FPS. There is no XP/leveling system. There are no unlocks, gold skins, or pay-to-win systems in place to access the weapons. Your access to better weapons is solely dependent on you and your team's performance in the current game you're in. But more on that later.

quote:

Like the previous games in the series, Global Offensive is an objective-based multiplayer first-person shooter. Each player joins either the Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist team and attempts to complete objectives or eliminate the enemy team. The game operates in short rounds that end when all players on one side are dead or a team's objective is completed. For most game modes, once a player dies, they must wait until the round ends to respawn. Players purchase weapons and equipment at the beginning of every round with money awarded based on their performance. Completing objectives or killing enemies earns the player money while negative actions, like killing a teammate or hostage, takes money away from the player. In addition, when a round ends all players receive some amount of money, with players on the winning team receiving substantially more.

What's new?

For those of you returning from CS 1.6 or Source, the game is the same in all the ways that matter, although some fun additions have been made. There are two new shotguns, one for the CTs and the other for the Ts, a few changes have been made to the SMGs such as the removal of the MP5 and TMP with the addition of others, a machine-gun which rains hilarity and death, and a new pistol. More interesting however is the introduction of two new grenades, the decoy and molotov cocktail, also known as the incendiary grenade for the CTs. There's also a one-hit kill taser which is never ever a bad idea to use.

There's also been an addition of new gamemodes which before has always been the responsibility of the mod community to implement:

Deathmatch
Great for new players and veterans alike. Simply choose your weapons and go kill things until you don't feel like it anymore. This is a great mode for getting accustomed with new maps, learning how different guns operate, or warming up a bit before you jump into a competitive match.

Arms Race
A streamlined implementation of the classic arms race mod from previous games. You start with a weapon and advance a level every time you get a kill. The first player to get a kill with the golden knife (the last level) wins the round. This is also a very good game mode for beginners, as you'll quickly learn the faster and more basic gameplay mechanics here due to how rapidly you go from dying to jumping right back into the fray, while still being forced to think somewhat tactically by being forced to use certain weapons.

Demolition
A sort of hybrid between a condensed and streamlined version of classic counter-strike and a simplified arms race. Both teams have a ladder of weapons to advance up, while the game is still divided into rounds that are won by either eliminating the other team or detonating/defusing the bomb. Good for intermediate players who want to get more accustomed to the larger game mechanics but not wanting to dive into a full competitive game just yet.

Casual
A good mode for beginner and intermediate players who are interested in getting into competitive play but don't want to be yelled at for not knowing the finer details just yet. The teams are larger, allowing you to blend in and be terrible without being noticed. There's also less emphasis on economic planning as everyone is automatically given armor and a helmet while the CTs also get defuse kits.

Competitive
This is what most people think of when they think counter-strike. CS:GO features a ranked matchmaking system allowing you to team up with your fellow goons and compete against a team of similar skill. While the ranking system allows players of all skill levels to enjoy this mode, you should try to only enter lobbies with players who are a similar rank to you. If you're a new player, entering a lobby with veterans will probably result in you playing against veterans, and you won't have a very good time, although you'll definitely learn quickly. Same goes if you're a veteran with a new player; you'll often find yourself having to pick up the slack or losing rounds despite doing well yourself.

New players will typically find themselves in the lower silver ranks. At this level teams typically lack coordination and effective communication while individuals are unfamiliar of how to effectively use their weapons. Near the middle ranks the teams start displaying organized tactics, although their timing is often off while individuals, despite being fairly competent, will still regularly make poor decisions. The top ranks are reserved for teams who are almost at the point of working as a single entity, communication is short and effective, while individuals are regularly making good shots and have a very developed situational awareness.
And that's what the game has to offer out-of-the-box!

But there's also a sixth game-type...

GOONPUGS
A mod being developed by our very own astr0man. This gamemode has 10 goons elect two team captains, who then pick teams. Once teams have been picked, they'll be pitted against each other in a match using the competitive rules with a few small modifications. Players of all skill levels are welcome!

Sounds great! How do I get involved? - First, Jump into our chatroom. Tons of regulars idle there and will help you if you have any questions or need help getting started. It's also where we organize our GoonPugs. They can happen at any time, but are most frequent after 5 P.M.

taxes?? TAXES?!!!

I heard you guys are mean to newbies

Extremely! This is mostly due to the competitive nature and speed of the game. Typically when info is given to the team, we expect results almost immediately. There's no time to dilly-daddle here! So unfortunately, yes, no matter what you are going to be yelled at, it can't be helped. Fortunately you can minimize the abuse you receive by learning a bit by following some of these rules!

#1 - TELL US IMMEDIATELY AND IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT YOU ARE NEW and even more importantly IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WE'RE SAYING, TELL US YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND
Many complex or detailed things are often times reduced down to single words out of necessity due to the high speed nature of this game. I'll be going over the more common ones, but please don't be afraid to ask your captain what you should be doing if you're in doubt.

#2 - If you are dead, do not use the mic
Hearing faint and subtle sounds is often times very important in this game, and I've seen many rounds lost because a player couldn't hear over his dead teammate blabbing away. Socialize using the keyboard when you're dead.

    Sound is important!

#3 - If you are defending, defend
If you are defending a position, just because you aren't killing people RIGHT NOW does not mean you aren't helping. One of the hardest things many new players have is getting over deathmatch habits drilled into you from so many other games. While fast paced, there are often extended periods of tense waiting, where patience is key. Once you're more familiar with the game you'll learn when it's okay to push, or when you should abandon your position and fall back. In the beginning though, just hold.

#4 - If you are attacking, stick with your team
If you're new, you're going to need the assistance of your team. Going lone wolf will almost certainly result in you getting killed, contributing little to nothing. Stay with your team, and pay attention to any calls your captain makes. If he tells the team to fall back, it means fall back NOW, not 'just wrap up whatever it is you're doing we can wait don't worry'. If he says to push, you push NOW. Well coordinated teams will beat individual star-players any day.

#5 - At any given time, ask yourself 'how can I be helping RIGHT NOW'
This one is a bit more difficult for new players, but it's probably the most important. One of the best fundamental strategies in this game is outnumbering your opponent in a gun battle. By doing this, your opponents will have too many targets to fire at, while your team's fire will be concentrated. If you see a teammate run around a corner and begin fighting, you should be immediately running out to help. If there is only one enemy around the corner, he now has two targets to kill in the time it takes those two targets to take one of him out. Pretty solid advantage huh?

#6 - Learn the maps and how to call out locations
A lot of this game revolves around knowing where exactly the enemy is. Learning the names of all the locations on maps will let you communicate much more effectively with your team. Failure to communicate enemy players locations can cause your team to react to situations too slowly, but miscommunications can lead to disasters. See ref. material 'nutty like magnum pi' notice how all the players coming out of the tunnel are looking in the wrong direction.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzwXdfQnVac

Here are some of the more popular maps. You don't need to know these 100%, but you should be at least have the gist of it

#7 - You actually have to aim
If you're coming from a game more oriented towards consoles like Call of Duty or Halo, you're going to have to break a lot of bad habits when it comes to gun play. The most effective weapons in this game require a finesse that controllers simply can't provide. While you're first getting accustomed to the game, always always fight the urge to lay on the trigger. Do not spray. Ever. Fire a small burst, regain your aim, then fire another. There are more advanced strategies that will allow you to get even better later, but for now, always fire in bursts.

Also: DONT CROUCH! Well, you can, but it's like spraying. It may improve your aim but it will place your head into your center of mass (bad) and also immobilize you (very bad) Break the habit first and play without it entirely. Once you can play without it you can bring it back in. This is easily the most common newbie mistake that we see.
IF YOU'RE NEW DO NOT CLICK THIS http://imgur.com/a/m1pz2 I'M WARNING YOU

#8 - Pay attention to your team's finances
The fastest and easiest way to synchronize buy and save rounds with your team is to check the scoreboard at the beginning of every round. Before buying anything for yourself, make sure that everyone else can also afford at least a rifle + armor or if they can't, that another teammate will be able to cover for them. The two magic numbers are $3700 and $4100 for T and CT respectively. There are times where some players can half buy or the captain may call a certain strategy, but as as a rule of thumb, just make sure everyone has above that magic number before buying.

Also related to this is post-pistol round economics. If your team loses the pistol round, most likely your whole team will be saving for the next two rounds. DO NOT purchase anything the two rounds after losing the pistol without asking your team captain first. Always remember the magic numbers!

Basic Vocabulary
Save or Eco
This means your team is hurting financially, and needs to sacrifice a round in order to get back up to fighting shape. Saves need to by coordinated with the team so that everyone will sacrifice a round at the same time, so that everyone will be up to fighting strength at the same time. This is very important, as a team that consistently has one or two team members saving individually each round will result in being consistently outgunned. No good! If you hear a team member tell you to save, it means do not buy anything for that round!

This can also mean throwing the match that's already in progress, in order to keep the loadout you have between rounds. The best way to do this is to find out where the enemies are and run and hide in the opposite direction. When to do this will be difficult to judge for beginners, your captain will probably make the call for you.

Anti-Eco
Modifying what your team purchases when you know the other team is saving, usually after they lose the pistol round. This usually means buying sub-machine guns in lieu of rifles for two reasons: sub-machine guns are extremely effective against unarmored targets, arguably more effective than rifles, and if you get killed, the other team gets a gun which is ineffective against your armored teammates.
Full Save
    Don't buy anything at all.

Deco (D-Eco)
A save round where everyone buys a pistol, usually a Desert Eagle but you can buy others, to increase the chances of a win.
Buy-out
It is the last round of the half or match, and saving will not be beneficial as any money at the end of the round will be lost. Everyone buys to their fullest potential. That Negev is looking pretty sexy huh? No, don't feel bad for buying it. Go ahead, it's alright. This is where it's ok to be reckless with your money.

Rush
A coordinated push for the entire team, aiming to overwhelm a few outnumbered defenders. This is not the time to have second thoughts about your mortality, get in there!
Pick
A slow and surgical advance, where the team will slowly feel for any holes in the defense and rush through it, or will create a hole itself by a player quickly popping out and taking out a defender.
Split
Split up the team and attack an area from multiple locations. The strategy makes it harder for enemies to defend since the targets are spread out.
Rotate (offense)
Either the defense is putting up too much resistance or a teammate has cleared out the other site. If you hear rotate it means you should be heading to the site called out, usually through alleys thought to be most likely safe. Get there ASAP and set up a defense.
Rotate (defense)
The player calling is either sure the bomb is heading into their site or the site has already been taken. You need to get to the site as soon as possible to help your team retake the site and secure the bomb.
Bomb Down
A teammate has killed the bomber and secured the bomb. Whatever you are doing can be dropped as you head to the bomb and help your team defend it until the timer expires.
Wallbang or Walling
Shooting at targets through a wall.

All of these rules and basic strategies are subject to exceptions and nuances, which you will learn as you play. The best way to learn these are to play/watch people who are better than you.

Tech-FAQ:

I keep hanging up while loading maps, it says 'initializing world' and nothing happens?
For anyone having workshop map downloading issues (where it just hangs at UGC Download 0.00000000000000 forever) try deleting anything in your steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive/csgo/cache folder.
How do I keep the rest of my computer's sounds from decreasing when I join a match?
This happens because CS:GO is considered a "communications activity" by Windows, which tries to decrease the sound so you can hear your dumb team mates. Go to the Sound control panel in Windows, click the "Communications" tab, and set it to "Do Nothing" to fix it.
When I use matchmaking, I get stuck in a server with >100 ping!
Go in console and type mm_session_max_ping 100 (or whatever your preferred max ping is). If you're in Australia or somewhere with few servers, this may just lead to you not finding a game, but for the civilized world it should keep you from getting matched with servers on the other side of either ocean.
Why is my FPS capped to 30/60 instead of my fps_max setting?
You either have VSync on in the game graphical options or in your graphics card's control panel.
Why does my mouse movement feel sluggish/inaccurate?
    A few possible reasons:
    • For "sluggishness" or mouse lag, there's a good chance you have VSync enabled, either in game or in your graphics card settings. Turn it off and see if that helps.
    • Your mouse may be using Windows' built-in mouse acceleration. Use the "raw input" mode in mouse settings and see if that helps.

GoonPUG

GoonPUG is a CS:GO server plugin written by me. It lets us play 5v5 competitive PUGs without dealing with Valve's matchmaking bullshit. There are 2 parts to GoonPUG: the actual server plugin, and a stats tracking module/web interface.

Basically, if you join a server running GoonPUG, it will alternate between a warmup phase and the competitive match phase. Generally, the warmup rounds will just be pseudo-deathmatching on aim maps, and the actual matches will be played on standard defuse maps.

Once 10 players /ready up during a warmup rounds, they will have the option to vote for a map and 2 captains. The 2 captains then pick teams, and the server switches to the match map. After a match ends, it returns to the warmup mode. Stats are only tracked during competitive matches. Note that only the first 10 players to ready up will get to play, not the first 10 people to join the server.

Commands
To use any of the following commands, just say them in chat. (alternate versions of the command are in italics)
  • /ready (!ready, .ready) - Sets your status to ready. You will need to ready up twice over the course of a match. Once during the warmup phase while the server is waiting for 10 players, and once before a competitive match starts. The reason for the 2nd /ready is to allow players time to download custom maps from a server.
  • /unready (!unready) - Sets your status to not ready. If you ready up and then decide you can't play or need to go get a drink or something use this.
  • /forfeit (!forfeit) - Starts a forfeit vote. This can only be used during a live match, and only if your team is losing. If your team unanimously votes to forfeit, the match will end.
  • /restart (!restart) - Starts a restart vote. If everyone in the match unanimously votes to restart, the match will be restarted. This can be useful if someone crashes early in a match. This is broken thanks to Necco
  • /hp (!hp, .hp) - Shows you the opposing team's remaining hp when you are dead.

Stats
Stats for GoonPUG matches are available at http://csgo.astroman.us/. Your overall rank is determined by RWS, a ranking system originally created for ESEA.

ESEA posted:

RWS, or "average Round Win Shares" was created to represent a player's contribution to overall team success.

RWS player values range from 0.00 to 100.00, a higher number is better than a lower number
Only 100 RWS points (or win shares) total are given out each round, and only to players on the winning team
All players on the losing team receive 0 RWS points for the round
A players receives 0 RWS points for each round that occurs after they leave a server, effectively treating it as if they had lost all of the subsequent rounds

For rounds that end by one player fragging another, the 100 RWS points are divided among the players on the winning team based on their share of the total damage dealt during the round
Example #1: You do 140 damage and everyone else on your team does 360 damage combined, you would get 28.00 RWS points (140 divided by 500 total damage dealt)

For rounds that end by one player successfully planting (via an explosion) or defusing, the player that completes the objective is given 30 RWS points, and the remaining 70 RWS points are divided among all players based on their share of the total damage dealt during the round
Example #1: You plant the bomb and it explodes, and you do 0 damage and everyone else on your team each does 50 damage, you would get 30.00 RWS points (30 for the successful plant) and everyone else would get 17.50 RWS (70% of 50 damage divided by 200 total damage dealt)

Example #2: You defuse the bomb, and do 100 damage while everyone else on your team each does 50 damage, you would get 53.33 RWS points (30 for the defuse, and 70% of your 100 damage divided by 300 total damage dealt) and everyone else would get 11.67 RWS points (70% of 50 damage divided by 300 total damage dealt)

Running GoonPUG on Other Servers
If you want to do this you will need to install sourcemod on your server. After that just PM me or message me on steam because at the moment I don't have a real install guide available.

Contributing
There are two separate parts of GoonPUG, both of which are available on github. Anyone can feel free to contribute. Currently there are several issues in the plugin repo that need fixing. The actual plugin is written in Sourcemod's custom scripting language, SourcePawn. If you are familiar with C or Java style syntax, it shouldn't be too hard to adjust to using Pawn, but really Pawn sucks and if you need help just ask me. The stats module consists of a log parsing daemon and a Flask web application, both of which are written in Python. The database stuff is done in SQLAlchemy.
Disclaimer: Always assume my code is terrible and if it looks wrong it probably is, so clean it up for me!

poo poo is horribly broken on the server ohgod
I make changes to GoonPUG a lot and break Wexford on a regular basis. If this happens just message me on steam. If it's during US central time work hours you can probably get through to me on #csgo on synirc.

Thoughts on forfeit.. Either remove it or put a long rear end timer between votes. I hate being spammed by it nonstop people keep trolling with it. I personally think it should be removed totally. I've been on a team that only won 5 rounds as T on D2 and still won the match. I know people are going to say well most of the time it's just a waste of time to play it out because they know they are going to lose. If that is the case and we need to keep it in than put a 3-5 min cooldown between calling for a forfeit vote.

I'll never vote 'yes' on it unless there's a legit reason(4v5). The only way you're going to learn and get better is by playing people better than you. Learn what they're doing, try to adapt to it. It's not like we're playing for keeps, try to get something out of a bad situation.

All I really play now is competitive matchmaking by myself. Can't be bothered to use a mic since I use closed headphones, but I think mic's are largely redundant if you're used to the game's most played 3-4 maps and don't have to look at your keyboard to type. I'm at the master guardian level if anyone wants to join up. I'm one of those losers who gets more enjoyment from games when he thinks he's accomplishing something other than simply having fun while playing. Steam's same as my username.

This game is so hosed since the patch. Amid all the other ridiculousness, the matchmaking servers have been ridiculously bad, and I know they always were to a degree. They got much, much worse, I have no idea what the hell they did to their infrastructure...probably rolled back to older machines or something? The movement is horrible right now, it's so twitchy, there's nothing fleet footed about the movement for me. You sort of glide then coast to a stop. Also I'm running into 200% more hackers than before, one or more in nearly every game now, and a thing I haven't noticed is happening a lot, teams of hackers. 3, 4, 5 man teams of guys hacking. The hell is that about? I've plummeted down from global elite and there's actually more hackers in the lower orders, lol, after a week of this I have to post...

If you're considering buying this game, wait, until this fuckery has been rooted out.

Or play Goonmans with us an avoid all of those problems.

I think mic's are largely redundant if you're used to the game's most played 3-4 maps and don't have to look at your keyboard to type.

No, my response was more like

My own techniques used against me to great effect. I should have figured, really, since I Juan Deag'd you like 5 rounds in a row the same way.

But it didn't work again, now did it? Fool me once...

They recently modified people's ELO, generally with everybody being dropped several ranks. You're not gonna be Global Elite now unless you're top 1% of players, if not better.

I picked up this exact mic two years ago because I love my real headphones but I didn't cotton to it. While the voice quality to price ratio is killer the clip only catches onto thick headphone cables and the wire from the jack to the mic being ~10 feet long was way too much slack. Worst of all even when I was using headphones with a wire gauge it could catch onto it had a hard time picking me up from around chin-level even though it's ostensibly omnidirectional (though FWIW I'm relatively quiet).

All that aside I ended up putting it on my desk right behind my keyboard so I could speak directly at it and it worked surprisingly well. Ended up replacing it with one of these Logitech standalone USB mics and it's been brilliant.

I fixed most of the stats site issues. A couple people's headshot percentages still seem high (Turk at .500?) but most of the other ones look ok, so I'm not sure where the problem is. But the problems with Death totals and round wins/lost are fixed.

Logging in via steam is still broken but it works on my local test VM, so I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Now I just have to add sorting on those columns for the main stats page. I'm also going to add pages to view stats for specific/recent matches, and per-weapon stats. Because everyone wants to know who has the most Zeus/knife kills and deaths.

edit: also, regarding forfeits, someone suggested punishment if you call for a forveit vote and it fails. Obviously kicking wouldn't really help since it'd make it 4v5, but maybe a post-game temp ban or something?

Could just make it so that if it fails they can't call any more for the game.

I heard you guys are mean to newbies

I've actually found people to be nicer in this game than I expected, especially in comparison to stuff like League of Legends and Dota. Far less dickheads than you might think. If you get on mic, are not 13 years old and are chill, most people will be chill back.

I hadn't played Counter-Strike seriously until I got into the beta for Global Offensive when Arsenal mode was introduced. Arsenal is a really good introduction to the game, the rules and the feel. If you're brand new, give Arsenal a shot. You won't have to worry about what guns to buy and the rounds are faster-paced. Once you get the hang of it, jump into Classic, which is where the real action is. There's going to be a bit of a learning curve when you get used to the maps, how they're played, the positions and which guns to buy and when, but it'll come to you over time. If you start playing Competitive, don't be surprised if you get rolled. There's a lot of good players out there and matchmaking doesn't always put you with players who have similar skill. It's tough, but you'll gradually notice yourself getting better without stuff like experience points, levels and unlocks insisting you are. I find that despite the sometimes crushing difficulty, you still have the chance to play well, and when you play well, you really feel it.

Basic Vocabulary

Here's a couple of additions I think are worth noting.

quote:

Save
Sometimes referred to as Eco. Save rounds are actually winnable if your team plays well, and any players who survive may pick up some guns from the enemy. Even if you don't win the round, a good eco happens when your team still manages to get some kills, which puts more pressure on the enemy's finances. Sometimes players who have more money may buy a pistol, shotgun or cheap SMG, but usually not.

The term also has some variants.
Full Save - Don't buy anything at all.
Deco (D-Eco) - A save round where everyone buys a pistol, usually a Desert Eagle but you can buy others, to increase the chances of a win.

Wallbang - Shooting at targets through a wall.

Split - Split up the team and attack an area from multiple locations. The strategy makes it harder for enemies to defend since the targets are spread out.

Dak-dak - Slang for an auto-sniper. Auto-snipers can be more dangerous than AWP's at times because they can spam and still hit like a train.

Map Locations - You'll hear players calling out names during a round. These will often refer to locations on the map. You can check the name of your current location by looking in the top-left of the HUD. You'll learn these over time.

quote:

Tips - Grenades

Good grenade play can really swing a round in your favour. As mentioned, frag grenades are more useful later in a round. They are also more useful if the enemy hasn't bought armour, so pistol rounds and rounds where the enemy is saving. If you're new, it's best you save your money rather than buying 'nades. Watch how best to use them. Starting out, you mightn't think the utility greanades, the flash and smoke, are as useful, but these can really turn the tables when played right. Although, don't entirely rely on flashbangs.

Also, I was wondering. Are the GO:ONS group and GoonPug servers only for US goons or can EU and AU goons play too without awful ping?

Well, Wexford is in Dallas TX so your ping will probably be not fun. But there's euro goons in the steam group.

I don't remember this being a problem ever really. When was the last time you played / were you doing actual competitive matchmaking or using the server browser?
