"Still nothing, huh?" Arata paused his game of Arcane Werewolf Strikes Back and leaned around the cubicle wall. Daisuke was still here, still plugging away on his tablet. The air around him was surrounded with AR sketches, still the same few characters with slightly different designs, and the floor was littered with empty crisp packets that hadn't been returned to the fabricator. "Nope," Arata shrugged and leaned back. "You've been typing for hours," Daisuke said. "Don't say you've been typing nothing all this time!" "No, I've got it now," Arata said. "An epic adventure and everything. Horror, crazy themes, a bit of romance. Tales that can grab anyone's interest. It's just..." "Yeah?" Daisuke said, knowing full well Arata was going to finish that sentence. "The beginning," Arata said. "I'm not sure how to start it." "Well, don't look at me," Daisuke sketched out some more feet. "I'm not a writer." "Well, be my muse, then," Arata unpaused, and started spamming eldritch blasts again. "Alright." Daisuke looked at the big screen in the corner. It was getting late, so instead of corporate messages and timetables it was just streaming Neo-Tokyo news. "Hey, hey. Looks like the cops busted up a cult before they could export monster parts. Can you use that?" "I could..." Arata mused. "I've been thinking of starting with some kind of minor villainous plot that sets up the tutorial, but I'm not sure to start the prologue with that and keep things mysterious." Daisuke cracked open another can of soda. "Well, you told me it's better to show than tell. You could have someone be watching it on the news, and then they talk about it. Have a philosophical discussion on what they're seeing and relate it to the story's themes somehow. We talk about nothing like that all the time." "I could," Arata nodded. "Maybe the heroes could be watching TV together." "You could use some unrelated background characters to do a bit of worldbuilding," Daisuke said. "I've got a few character designs I can't use for the heroes." "Why, because anything that's too freaky doesn't sell in today's technonervous culture?" "No, they're just loving boring." "Boring characters having a conversation about nothing..." Arata tapped his chin. "I like it, but would the boss approve it? I mean, starting a crazy tale of horror and romance with two boring guys having a conversation about nothing is a hard sell. I'd probably bore everyone to tears before it's done." "You'll be fine if it's quick and not like, five hundred words or something," Daisuke said. Arata shrugged and opened his word processor again. It was worth a shot. Daisuke leaned back and admired his handiwork. Another cool dude with a sword. Hell yes. "Oh, or what you could do is..." Thursday February 9 2119, 8:00PM UAE, Chinese New Year's Eve Location: Dubai Metro D/Line Maintenance Yard A Aspect: Maintenance Clutter Maglev trains don't need a lot of maintenance, but when they do, they come here. One hop over the barbed wire fence and you're standing among lines and lines of empty trains, from cutting-edge units with electrical faults to decommissioned models that haven't been broken down for parts yet. There's a maintenance building off to the side, and sheds and piles of crates are scattered around so the workers don't have to go back there every few minutes. Graffiti is everywhere, because who wouldn't want to pretty up this junk dump? You can see the skyscrapers of Dubai looming in the distance and, to the northwest, the arcology towers out in the sea. You could be out there, right, now, dancing under paper lanterns and watching people in dragon and lion costumes prance through the streets and, I don't know, watching fireworks while getting hammered or something. You could be celebrating. But nope, some G://0st dude had to hit the network with a distress call because some data retrieval mission in here was compromised. You were nearby and you've done missions before, so why not, right? So, that's where it all starts. You guys, jumping the fence or flying in or waiting in a nearby car or however it is you guys would deal with this. Somewhere in these yards, a pasty nerd needs your help. Maybe I should have stuck with the conversation about nothing. . . . Sup guys! Please post your character sheets here for quick reference later. Just the stats, I can read the OOC thread for the fluff. Rolls can be done in #redhandofdoom if you have witnesses OR by rolling Fudge dice in Orokos if you don't want to IRC it up (use the campaign name Trigger Warning: Anime). It's up to you where you are exactly. I am going to assume a fence is not going to pose a challenge for you, and you don't need to roll. OOC thread: Here! Discovery When you head towards the middle of the yards, where Da'ud thinks there'd be a ritual, you make a discovery! There are dudes here. If you had to guess, judging by their clothes and the way at least one of them is high out of his mind and should in no way be allowed to have an SMG, you'd say they were Sons of the Scirocco. They're loosely patrolling a section of the yards, wandering up and down the mazes of junk between trains and swinging their flashlight at interesting patches of dirt or rummaging through the carriages like they're looking for something. Their current base is a little clearing between the ends of a few trains, where someone has left a campfire and a couple of bags. You can't see your fellow vigilante - some programmer ironically codenamed Haxz0rl33t, according to his Soul Network profile - but Mina's tags say he's there, against the other end of the ten-car train you're hiding behind. Probably not dead. A couple of the Sons are drawing a magic circle on the concrete. Nobody has seen you yet, but there's a dude with a sword perched on a couple of shipping crates by the clearing that looks pretty worrying. He's just crouching there, leaning on his sword and watching the circle like he's sure the Sons will ruin it if he looks away for more than a minute. Still clearly keeping an eye out, though. They haven't spotted you yet. Ettin fucked around with this message at 05:06 on Jan 31, 2013 |

Sun Yue I am going to go ahead and steal a Fate Core rule: you got 3 or more shifts, so you succeeded with style and get an added benefit! Sun Yue can tell he can handle a sword well, but he could probably stand to be more ready to fight. He's looking over the ritual-in-progres like he knows his stuff, though! Sun Yue guesses that he only Minored In Swords, and lacks some of the tricks a sword expert like her could pick up. That is one hosed Up Left Eye though. Sun Yue can't tell if it's missing entirely or what, but she can worry about that later. He definitely isn't watching his left side with a patch over it though. Sun Yue gets a free tag on both of those!

I've been assuming everything is Difficulty 2 or 3, so you place maneuvers! Investigation Arthur takes off! From what he can see there are two sketching the circle, three guarding them, two patrolling different halves of the nearby area and three rummaging alone in trains, looking for something. Probably not too tough though. Most of them are On Their Own, and expecting fellows in trouble to shout for assistance. Arthur's not sure what the sword guy's deal is but he doesn't look like a Son of the Sirocco. Exhibit A: He is clearly not stoned or incompetent. (Arthur gets a tag! Mina also gets her maneuver off, but it's fragile.) Meanwhile, Maximina aims! She puts Got Your Back on the Sons. Mina's Watching You Mina and Arthur spot Haxz0rl33t sitting against a train! He is a pretty boring dude with mousy blonde hair and a hint of chubbiness wrapped in a videogame shirt; it looks like someone has slashed his stomach and left him there to nurse his wounds. He's not dead, but getting himself out of this jam would be difficult at best. His sweet AR shades are cracked, so contact is difficult, but Mina overhears a conversation between the two boring guys - one with a pretentious college beard and one with a shaved head that looks awful on him - setting up the ritual: "...Tell me what word I'm thinking of," College Beard is saying. "Leprosy?" Shaved asks. "No, that's not it... metaphor! It's a sexy song, it's a funky song, it's a song about dinosaurs eating people, but it is really just a metaphor for loving people, right?" "Can't say I'm following you." "Because sometimes when you gently caress somebody you feel like a dinosaur." Sword dude stands up. "Oy. You two have been having a conversation about nothing for ten minutes now. Are we going to possess this guy or what?" "Sorry, Mr Tsurugi," Shaved says, and gets back to work. "Can't rush it." "It's just habit," Beard says. "Y'know parkour?" "Parkour?" Shaved says. "Free running! The art of vaulting over fences, scaling walls, flipping off buildings and all that, right? You know how the point of doing it is because moving so fast and unconventionally is fun in and of itself?" "Yeah?" "I think I do a bit of that, just in an intellectual-slash-conversational sense." There's a long pause, and then Tsurugi draws a second sword. "Sorry boss."

Circle Da'ud isn't sure it's for, but the circle Tsurugi is directing them to draw is heavy on the fractals and he recognises the pattern - looks like one of the rituals favoured by the Disciples of the Cold Ones.

Uh Oh Arthur grabs his target, but not fast enough! He lets out a yelp and drops his flashlight before Arthur can get a good grip. "What was that?" Tsurugi looks around! "What was what, Ken-sama?" A particularly high guard asks. "For God's... just get ready!" Looks like they know someone is here! Fight time! Here's a map: Katanas are Tsurugi, Oranges are the circle guys, Red are the other Sirocco goons, G://0st icon is your mark, and if you guys have a preference for actual icons for you guys I am all ears. Zones are the trains, the spaces between the trains and the circle area to the north. The scene still has Maintenance Clutter - the spaces between trains are a mess of crates, scrap metal, train parts etc. and the trains themselves are packed with seats. I am going to assume the trains themselves have enough open windows and doors that moving through them isn't much of a problem. You can get a surprise round to get into position and take shots at the mooks/Tsurugi if you like! But... Everyone except Sun Yue who targets the pretentious cultist by the circle first gets a Fate Point, because gently caress that guy. Sun Yue is compelled to go for Tsurugi instead because shinigami code. I am totally using those icons for bonus rules and compels. Ettin fucked around with this message at 04:18 on Feb 1, 2013 |

Alas, Pretentious Dude OKS: Since these cultists are not that tough, I won't make you tag Got Your Back! This is why I decided it was placed on the cultists as a group. You can tag it to shoot one later if you like. Also ha ha there is no way he is dodging well enough to not get taken out. Sun Yue, Da'ud and Mina get a Point from compels and Arthur, Da'ud, Sharon and Maximina get one for doing something that hurts that pretentious dick. Also Sharon creates a maneuver! His eyepatch falls away. "Keh!" Tsurugi glares at Haxz0rl33t. "Fine, you can have them. But this isn't over, shinigami." He focuses on some distant point over Sun Yue's shoulder and his weird eye flares as his body glows, then implodes into it. The eye winks out. You still have no idea what that guy's deal is.

Well, a block against moving won't do much if they're cut down, and you can't put a block against someone defending. You could make a spray attack and split it across everyone (the others already owned most of the cultists anyway), but how about this: Sharon places Deafening Sound on the Sons! Since she succeeded with style (for reals, look at that 7, no way she did not) and gently caress the Sons of Sirocco, you guys can get one free tag per cultist. The Sons stumble or drop to their knees and scream, hands to their ears in a feeble attempt to protect them! The one in the ten-car train drops the case under a seat.

Hakurei Industries Præj∂ct D¥∑«makδœ∑√¥π ∞arch∏•‘≤ $∫∑ Drive Mina fishes for information! The short version is, it's probably research data on some new project. Whatever it is, it's important enough for Hakurei to magically encrypt it. The drive will corrupt itself at midnight, or earlier if it detects too much tampering. The files will open with a password, or perhaps someone on a Hakurei Industries network account with high enough access. (Unless it's spoofed right Hakurei will see it in their system logs, though.) This is not an uncommon corp procedure - Mina would guess that this data is normally kept on a secure wired system cut off from the Net, and the physical drive is used to bring it to important people who can't just go there and look. Hakurei's IT department probably has a G://0st who managed to sneak it out of the building. And onto a train? Shrug. Mina will need to overcome a 10-shift ward.

It's a pretty weird sign. The shinigami bus stop is across the yard, beyond another wire fence and on the other side of a city street, just around the corner from the nearest train station. The sign itself doesn't seem to fit its surroundings - when you're not looking at it, the details start to fade from your memory like a dream. It may or may not only exist on this street because Sun Yue needs it. Shinigami are complicated. You have a couple minutes to deal with the blood, the bodies and what they left behind, if you feel like doing anything.

Shinigami Bus As you finish stuffing the bad guys into a nearby dumpster, an enormous multi-limbed black* cat with a hollow, bus-like body leaps out of the shadows and slides to a halt at the top. It has windows and furry seats and headlight eyes and everything, what the gently caress. Right now it is mostly empty except for a regular-sized black cat with two tails, which sits in the doorway while Sun Yue presents the ride chits and hops onto a front window as everyone files in. The feline vehicle starts skipping away once everyone is on. *original character do not steal What do you want to do about Haxz0rl33t? Inside, your ride is as smooth and comfortable as the average bus - maybe even better, since you get soft and comfy seats. Outside, Dubai blurs past you as the bus breaks every sensible speed limit in the city. Fences are jumped, rooftops are used as roads and busy highways are cut across. Nobody seems to notice the bus, even when it passes right in front of them. Sometimes it takes shortcuts, and you feel like a few of them skipped sections of the city entirely, but those parts are hazy and dreamy in your memory. You're not sure why it isn't a bumpy ride either. Oh well! Sometimes it passes near Chinese New Year parades and celebrations, and those are comforting to look at. Haxz0rl33t doesn't really know what the deal is with Tsurugi or the Jinn, and as far as he knew nobody else even knew about the mission. On the way to the hospital he sends a few messages to Ghost, and they come up with a plan to dump him in a nearby alley and fake an encounter with some street criminals. It's no longer your problem! The bus skids into some empty street near a parade and skips to an empty bus stop. It's a regular stop, plastered in paper and digital advertisements for trendy new apartments in the arcology, business opportunities on Mars and grassroots "clean up Dubai" campaigns, and totally always had a shinigami bus stop sign next to it. Haxz0rl33t is dropped off by an alley behind it. "Thanks. My friends will handle it from here." "Good luck with the data!" he adds to Mina as the cat bus takes off again. Thursday February 9 2119, 8:45PM UAE, Chinese New Year's Eve Location: Abandoned Hangar, Edge of Dubai Aspects: Shadowy Spaces, Abandoned Tech When some of Dubai's wealthy elite relocated to the new domed cities of Mars, the ripples caused chaos in the business world. This abandoned hangar is some of the fallout - it was owned by some commercial space flight venture, but the company was bought up by some bigger corporation and then dismantled when they liquidated most of their Earth assets years ago. Now all that's left is a maintenance hangar nobody wanted to buy. The insides are dark and empty and lined with years-old technology. People have looted and vandalised the place (there's an impressive one outside of a night sky with a constellation shaped like an anarchy symbol), but the backup generator and larger equipment could presumably be made to work again if you tried. The Soul Network has used the place a couple times before and might have left a few traces, but they didn't take or break much. It was probably in worse shape when they found it. The cat bus waits a few moments to make sure everyone is getting off and staying off before nodding a goodbye and bounding back towards Dubai. The Bus Stop sign disappears once you're not looking at it. And there you go! You have until midnight to help Mina get through a 10-shift ward and raid the data drive, or until 10-11 if you want to party first. Poke around, set up maneuvers, whatever.

Ritual Prep You set up maneuvers for Mina! • Sharon has her G://0st friends collect all the data they have on hand about Hakurei. It's mostly private knowledge about their network protocols and customised operating systems, rather than anything specific, but it helps Mina figure out how they roll. You place Distributed Computing! • Arthur finds some offices in the back and on an upper floor. A lot of the tech has been stolen already, but there are a few servers, forgotten spare computers stuffed in closets and broken PCs that you can fit them together into something Mina can use. Plus, most of the cables in the building still work once you find the backup generator in the basement. You place Cannibalized Company Computers! • Maximina plays video games. • Da'ud talks a lot about magical techniques he knows that Mina could use! After a while she gets him to sit down and help her set up the magic circles and poo poo too. With his high roll Da'ud places Greek Techniques and A Wizard's Assistance. That's enough preparation for Mina to match the spell's complexity! Sun Yue coming in a sec, Mina can post!

Hakurei Industries is always investing in weird projects like this with as much money as they can extort from shareholders and business partners. Project Madukkarai seems to be a device that shifts an arcane space (or at least its border) into a pocket dimension or something to make it harder for nasty things with tentacles to intrude. There are a lot of words like "decohere" and "asynchrony" and "harmonics" thrown in there. It is very ambitious and very likely not going to work, but if it did it would get them buckets of money from the sort of people who can spend thousands of dollars on wards. Governments, mostly. The drive itself is full of occult mathematics, meticulous diagrams, hundred-page documents, spreadsheets, budget reports and legal documentation. It would take a while to sift through, but here's the good news: You can just have Takemikazuchi or Haxz0rl33t palm it off on someone else in the Soul Network if you want, and even if you do want to take the time to sift through it and throw some dice at it, you can do that back in Dubai while sipping coffee and watching the fireworks or whatever you do to celebrate! You can also make a copy that won't explode at midnight. So, what do you want to do next? The byakhee will give you a ride to any other location in the city, and the Disciples will probably be unable to track you. If you decide to take a look at the material yourself don't start rolling dice yet, unless you want to risk sitting in this compromised hangar all night. I want to see you guys get your ROLEPLAY on.

Co-opting from a lovely game, pretend it's a night scene! Thursday February 9 2119, 9:51PM UAE, Chinese New Year's Eve Location: al-Din Apartments, Level 108, South Tower, Dubai Arcology Aspects: The Latest In Leisure Technology, Hidden Stashes, A Family Megacorporation, Byakhee Squad The byakhee are faster than taking the Metro across the massive bridge linking the Arcology to land and riding an elevator up, but you are so lucky Da'ud's apartment has a balcony. Unlike most arcology apartments, which settle for being comfortable and give the illusion of size, this one is actually pretty big. The lounge and dining room are linked into one big room, with the lounge and balcony down a handful of unnecessary steps and lined with huge windows; it's very roomy, but you get the feeling inviting the byakhee in here is a terrible idea. There's also an open kitchenette and minibar if you feel like human food, a high-tech bathroom if you want to clean up before the party or get your waste to be analysed for medical problems, and some fancy bedrooms if you want to sleep or do something that'll get you made fun of in the peanut gallery. And an aquarium in the wall, why the gently caress not. Also, touchscreens everywhere! The enormous home entertainment system has screens, the walls have screens with readouts of room climate, local weather and current news, the coffee table is a screen, the fridge doors are screens, there are e-books and data pads... All of them have internet access and let you transfer files from one to the other easily, so killing time here should be a breeze. You have some files to check out and time before the big midnight party! What do you do? (You can use the computers to browse the internet, check on news or forums, etc., especially if there's any setting stuff you want to find out.) Feel free to start throwing dice around too.

Mors Rattus posted:6 on Anthropology, to figure out what's up with Madukkarai. I will Lore-nerd later, probably, about the magic involved if this doesn't cut it. It's definitely a reference to the Madukkarai Wall. It's an ancient wall that marked the boundaries of the Three Crowned Kings, a triumvirate of ancient Tamil kingdoms. It was said to be erected in a night by the goddess Sellandiyamman so everyone would stop having border disputes. There are two important things Da'ud can get from that: 1) It's a reference to the Project's desire to erect a new kind of magic boundary around an arcane space; 2) Hakurei is running out of project names. It's not super relevant, but Da'ud is getting the ol' braincells working, so I'll give him the maneuver Threes, Huh... Mors Rattus posted:Lore 5, tagging Threes, Huh... to up it to 7. Dau'd would probably agree with Hakurei that this isn't happening. It's theoretically possible, just not something it's in Hakurei's best interests to bother with. It's a lot of work for a ward that isn't foolproof anyway. Also, these formulae are a little strange... If Da'ud compares the unedited theory work with the edited summary, it becomes more obvious. The original notes are overly complex and confusing, and when actually compared to the cleaned up version submitted to Technology Assessment, Da'ud realises they have subtle differences. In the edited-for-superiors version, someone has done the occult equivalent of changing a couple of signs and decimal places here and there on the last third of most of the important equations and diagrams. It takes him a few minutes, but if Da'ud looks specifically for the unedited third pieces (or makes obvious corrections in the original work), he can piece it together. Those parts are mostly from Watanabe's theories, all heavy on the angles and higher mathematics. Put them back in their proper places, and the misdirection becomes obvious: The ritual isn't going to shift the room into another dimension. It's going to turn the room into a portal to another, unknown dimension. Davin Valkri posted:Is it a scholarship roll to find where this "Genjii" place is? Where is "Genjii"?: 4dF+3 1 I hope it isn't... The Genjii facility seems to be an old test facility of Hakurei's out in the desert, but specific coordinates aren't given. You might have to do some digging or find someone in Hakurei to tell you where it is!

The great thing about the Wolf Lodge is its members come from all walks of life. Some of them are accountants, some of them are homeless, some of them work for the security hypercorp Scarlet Gatekeeper Security that has the contract to guard most Hakurei Industries sites. Maximina gets Genjii coordinates - it's out in the desert of Dubai, far enough from populated areas to meet legal requirements while staying as close as possible to save money. She can only get coordinates and not information on the project or help getting past the guards, though. Ettin fucked around with this message at 07:05 on Feb 18, 2013 |

Thursday February 9 2119, 10:45PM UAE, Chinese New Year's Eve Location: Genjii Site Exterior, Dubai Desert Aspects: Dark And Stormy Night, Scarlet Gatekeeper Lockdown, Byakhee Squad It's a desert and it's really dark. There's not much you can say about it, really. Fortunately, you're circling above Genjii before I have to! It's... not super impressive from the sky, to be honest. The above-ground section of the bunker is just a big metal shell with a big front entrance, a loading dock and a few emergency exits. A short ways down the sandy road is a small helipad/garage, and just beyond it sits a security building. Both are cheap 3D-printed modules, because Genjii doesn't really deserve expensive addons. The whole thing is surrounded by a barbed wire fence with a gate by the security building, just in case. Aside from that there are just a few scattered crates, because crates are everywhere. There's not much in the way of guard patrols - a couple having a smoke at the gate and a couple of lone guards doing laps around the complex are all they have, besides a few cameras. They're mostly keeping an eye out for corporate spies trying to sneak in by land, and they're not hard to spot. They probably wouldn't just kill anyone they see, but Dark River Security established a precedent for using Occult Defense laws to shoot civvies and there aren't any witnesses out here. All you need to do is get in. So, let's try this: quote:STEALTH TRACK You can all take a turn in any order! I'll post a map when I wake up tomorrow if you want, but for now the outside is basically three zones in a row: Security/Gate, the Helipad and the Bunker. The interiors are their own zones. You can assume the byakhee silently land you somewhere hidden in the Helipad/Bunker zones and return to the skies without being in danger.

And I don't have a goddamn FATE point! Here's a lovely map! White = some kind of entryway. Keep in mind they are running as dark as possible to avoid drawing attention, so there aren't any floodlights or anything. Both modules are two stories tall. The helipad has a radio tower, and there's a generator/fuse box at the back on the second floor, because this will totally protect it from interference. The security module keeps their power stuff on the inside. Ettin fucked around with this message at 03:08 on Feb 21, 2013 |

Comrade Gorbash posted:Invoking When You Snatch the Peb- Oh. Uh, Next Lesson! to fix a crappy roll for the Sora no Kokei. Cloaking field up! So basically, I'm having the stealth track defend at +2 and rolling what seems appropriate for the action for attack. Taking out their radio tower is a pretty big thing, but so far it's only one event and not one in a series of technical issues, plus Sun Yue has magic shinigami don't-get-noticed powers. So I'm attacking at +4. Disabling Comms: 4dF+4 5 4dF+2 3 Stealth: OXOO Comms disabled! Sun Yue lands on the balcony with the fuse box, just outside a room with an aging second-hand generator. Flicking a few switches turns off the radio tower, which messes with their comms pretty bad; you can only get like, one bar out here max. A minute later, the back door of the security module opens briefly and a grumbling guard steps out to go see if it's their equipment crapping out on them again. Maximina finds some nice crates to stay behind while she waits for her moment! She places Start To Crate, which she can tag to help take a guard out or hide while she does other stuff. There's a network of security cameras with a decent range of vision modes, but they are mostly focused on the desert beyond the base and the entrances. Also, they sweep left to right in wide arcs and aren't always looking at important keypads and other units. Mina places Insecurity System.
