![]() Website Installation Guide. A very useful guide from the forums on how to get started as a combat character. Just replace Brawler/Unarmed with whatever your profession and its equivalents are. PGS thread for private shenanigans. <<< INFO FOR IRC AND MUMBLE IS HERE! USE THEM!![]() Star Wars Galaxies is a highly regarded sandbox game originally released in 2004 and shut down in 2011. SWGemu is an active pre-CU, emulated private server for SWG that is currently in Alpha, but still in a very playable (and fun!) state. FAQ: READ THIS FIRST After you create a character DON'T LEAVE THE SPACE STATION YOU SPAWN AT without migrating your stats! Press C to open the character sheet and press stat migration in the bottom right. YOU CAN ONLY MAKE 1 CHARACTER PER DAY, SO DON'T gently caress UP! MAKE 100% SURE YOU'VE GOT WHAT YOU WANT BEFORE HITTING CREATE!Good setups for stats! Pure non-combat character: Max out your Action, Stamina, Mind and Willpower. Put leftover points into Focus and Quickness. This is to allow you to spam survey/sample or if you're a doctor, allow you to do doctor stuff more. Entertainer: Max out Action, Stamina and Quickness . The other stats literally do not matter at all. If you intend to go Rifleman: Max out Mind, Willpower and Focus. Put leftover points into Health and Action evenly. All other combat characters: Max out Willpower and Mind. Put leftover points into getting a decent amount of total Health and Action. If you have any more points left over, put them into Focus. Also Wookiees and Ithorians need their own race specific armor, and Trandoshans can't wear boots! ![]() So, what's the deal with the server? The play server is Basilisk. Nova is the test server. The official SWG EMU servers are aiming to emulate version 14.1, which was the final pre-CU version of SWG. This means that some things, like TEFs, are not currently in. Once the EMU is fully working as close to version 14.1 as possible, the server will be wiped and a new server will take its place. On this server, changes will be made to the game based on what the server admins/community decide, and it will no longer be a "pure" 14.1 server. This is likely multiple years off, so don't fret! Also, server wipes in SWG are god drat awesome. This game is uniquely fun on a fresh server (especially with a guild like ours!), so the fact it will eventually be wiped is actually a good thing. How many people play and what are the account limitations? Everyone can have 2 characters online at a time on the same account and up to 10 characters. Each player is only allowed one account. You will be banned for playing more than 1, and for multiple accounts in the same household, you must ask the support team for special permission. The server typically doesn't drop below 1500 characters logged in, and breaks 2300 at primetime. What works and what doesn't? -Commando mostly does not work. -Droid Engineer can only make droids as decorations and bounty hunter probe droids. Nothing else functions. -Bio-engineer can make chef additives and will soon be able to make enhanced clothing, but can't make creatures yet. -Creature Handler doesn't work period. -Jedi are NYI (they will be using the village system when they are first implemented. This is almost certain to change once the new server is released) -Jump to Lightspeed is not implemented. The JTL races are available, but you can't go into space or go to any of the JTL-added planets. JTL will be implemented after the ground game is 100% complete. -Many quests and theme parks are NYI. -Lots of caves/POI's aren't populated with monsters or don't have as many monsters as they should (fixed next patch) -No missions for humanoids are implemented yet -DOT weapons aren't implemented yet I'm new and where's the quests and direction? What do I do? Oh my god this game sucks! Either give it time, or just stop playing. This is an economy driven sandbox game. If you don't like not being told where to go, what to do and how to play, then it's not gonna be for you. But to answer questions that some first time players have asked in guild chat; yes, there is more to the game than running missions to kill bugs. It's up to you to discover the rest of the game, though. This game is VERY complicated and not easy to get in to, involving TONS of grinding, but most players would agree the payoff is well worth it. Goons?! Yes! We have a guild with an estimated 30 or 40 unique players, and we're growing every day! We also have a city! How do I join this guild/where is this city? Our city is at 5438 2790 on Dantooine. You will have to drive here, and it's a long drive across some very hostile landscape full of aggressive monsters, so be prepared. This is also where you need to go to get a guild invite. SWG is an old game, and its guild invite mechanics are archaic. You need to be right next to the guild hall, and someone needs to come out and invite you. Sometimes, there just won't be someone around to invite you or people will be busy doing something else in game (as travel is non-trivial) to come out and invite you. If this happens, don't take offense, but also don't waste your time waiting around if no one can help you! Who can invite? Most people in the guild have invite rights. Here is a good list of active players who can invite, or who can ask in guildchat to find someone to invite you: Senile State Drono Droni Sinile Blackron Zyoxo Kyoxo Zaroff Mingoh Gyre Broji Lurppe Rhazau Ahdinko Foamy Burpy Kalkori Nefer Should I drop a house in town? You'll need zoning rights to drop a house, and you should absolutely only drop houses behind the Guild Hall, Cantina or City Hall otherwise you'll RUIN our layout, but by all means, yes. If you want to drop a house, ask in guild chat for zoning rights, and if someone can give you them and isn't busy, they will! Once you've dropped a house and "Declared Residence" using the terminal inside the house, make sure you head over to the city hall and vote for Ahdinko (incumbent) as Mayor. This gives our mayor political EXP, which improves our city. How do I get a mount and which should I get? From the Bazaar (red terminals in city), under Deeds -> Vehicle Deeds. Buy a Swoop, they are the fastest vehicles and should only cost 5000~ credits which is just a couple of missions. If you ask nicely, a generous goon could tip you this money when you're starting out. Also note it is generally cheaper to just buy a new Swoop than it is to repair it when your current one is nearly destroyed. How much is a house? Which should I get? Get a Small Naboo, Tatooine or Generic house. They are only 3000 credits on the bazaar, again under Deeds. MAKE SURE YOU PLACE THIS IN THE RIGHT SPOT IN GOONTOWN. How/where do I get buffs? In a city (Theed or Coronet are best), first go to a cantina for Mind buffs. You'll see entertainers advertising buffs ("125% music and dance buffs"), often with automated group invites that require you to stand or sit in front of them. Once in the group, right click on the entertainer and select to 'watch' or 'listen' to them. You'll need to watch them dance for 2 mins & listen to their music for 2 mins to get the full buffs. The other buffs come from a doctor. Head to a medical center. Doctors generally won't buff you without a tip first, and usually they charge 5-7k credits. To tip, type "/tip <players name> <amount> bank". This will 'tip' them the credits from your bank account. They doc should then give you 6 buffs, to your Action & Health pools. These buffs will make your life so much easier when you're new. They should last 1.5-3 hours which is enough time to run a lot of missions and get a good amount of cash. Note that entertainers and doctors are sometimes not AFK-automated and are actually run by players who are sitting at their computer, and will want some formality/order (like waiting in line behind other players for your buffs at a doctor). I'm in the guild. I can see the guild chat, but how do I see a list of players that are online? You cant. Yes, it sucks. The easiest way is to just add goons to your friends list when you see them type in guild chat. What profession should I be? Which are good and bad? Before you begin reading: Buffs in SWG turn everyone into mini-jesus. Any combat class can solo anything if they put enough effort in and sub-spec properly. If you really want to be a pistoleer for PvE, you won't be killing stuff as fast as a Rifleman, but you can still kill stuff. This is purely a guideline, as a lot of people in guild have levelled up a profession but been disappointed with it when they found it wasn't as good as they had hoped in terms of power. MELEE PROFESSIONS Swordsman Swordsman is the bread-and-butter melee PvE profession. They have good defenses and do the most sustained damage of any class in the game. You can't go wrong with a PvE swordsman, and they aren't the worst choice for PvP, either. Fencer Fencer is the "high defense" melee profession. They deal less damage than other melee specs, but they get incredibly high defensive bonuses. In PvP, Fencer is the top dog in terms of melee because they can deal stun damage, which armor doesn't mitigate as much as other damage types, and also because of their very high defenses. Fencer is far less potent, but still viable, in PvE. Pikeman Pikeman is essentially the Swordsmans bastard brother. Everything he can do, the Swordsman can do better. In the real game, they had a nice pvp niche, but on the EMU dot weapons are NYI, so that niche is non-existant. They are still not terrible, but finding good Pikeman weapons is a lot of trouble since good crafted ones are incredibly hard to get the materials for, which forces you to rely on looted Pikes. Teras Kasi Artist This is Karateman. He hits things with glorified brass knuckles called vibro knucklers. TKA's do decent damage, but they can ONLY deal kinetic damage and their weapon options (haha options - they only get one weapon) don't scale nearly as well as Fencer or Swordsman weapons do, so while they're usually the most powerful melee class early on, they taper off heavily later. Still, they're a half decent pvp class with a very reliable dizzy+knockdown combo ability, great defenses and the ability to hit mind, and while they aren't stellar at PvE, they're at least better than Fencer. Brawler Like Marksman, Brawler is a basic profession. Unlike Marksman, it's actually worth mastering. Master Brawler gives you 2 very good abilities in Warcry 2 and Intimidate 2, and also gives you speed and accuracy which are useful for Swordsman, but not so useful for Fencer or Pikeman. RANGED PROFESSIONS Pistoleer Pistoleer is the ranged analogue to fencer. You do far less damage in exchange for having a shitton of defenses. Like Fencer, this makes pistoleer not an ideal PvE class, but makes it good for PvP. Carbineer Carbineer does pretty decent damage and has a fuckton of knockdowns. It's decent for PvE, but outclassed by Rifleman. If it could attack mind, it would be the best PvP class in the game, but since it can't, it's really bad instead. Rifleman Rifleman is the top dog PvP class due to being ranged and being the only recipient of an armor piercing stun damage weapon. It's also right up there with Swordsman as the top PvE class, doing almost as much damage while having ranged privilege. Marksman Marksman is a basic profession and mostly a gateway into other professions. Mastering it is a requirement for some professions, but if you don't want those, don't master it, because the bonuses it gives are negligible for the point investment. Combat Medic Combat Medic is an amazingly versatile profession. Not only can it dot the poo poo out of people/monsters, doing great damage, but it's the only class that can heal mind (only on other people) and it comes with plenty of healing ability. You can subspec Combat Medic as just about any combat class and have a good build, but it's most often taken with Rifleman. Amazing for both pvp and pve, and Combat Medic also doubles as a crafting profession, providing supplies to other CM's. Bounty Hunter In the live version of the game, bounty hunter could get missions from the bounty terminals allowing them to hunt down Jedi players. In the SWGemu version, there aren't any Jedi yet, but Bounty hunter is still good as a subspec for Pistols or Carbines, offering some very nice abilities and stat bonuses to those profs. Despite not usually being worth mastering, you do need a master bounty hunter in order to take PvP faction bases. NON-COMBAT/HARD TO CATEGORIZE PROFESSIONS Medic A basic profession, Medic is mostly taken to get to Doctor or Combat Medic, but also as a sub spec for just about any combat spec. At Novice Medic you can tend your own wounds which is very useful, and with a small investment into the tree (for example, 4x4x) you can heal yourself for huge amounts. Worth taking as a sub profession, even if you don't want to go Doctor or Combat Medic. Doctor Life as a doctor mostly involves either being a buffbot, or sitting in a med center, chatting with people, buffing them and healing their wounds. If that sounds fun for you, it's a good class. If not, it's still useful and can make decent money selling/handing out buffs, which are totally essential. The game could not function without Doctors. They also make medical supplies for other doctors and medics, so Doctor essentially doubles as a crafting prof. Scout Scout is a basic profession that every combat character should pick up early, and drop later on once you're finishing up your build. It allows you to harvest creature resources and traverse terrain faster, which is always useful for levelling up. Ranger Ranger is basically "advanced" scout. The primary function of the ranger prof that makes them essential in SWG is their ability to harvest creature resources in vast amounts. A monster that would, for example, give 400 hide to a Master Scout will give 3000 to a Master Ranger. This makes ranger incredibly profitable, but a bit one dimensional, as a template with so many points in ranger can't really solo the more difficult monsters. Still, rangers make more money than the people who solo the difficult stuff anyway! Entertainer Entertainer is a basic profession, that mostly serves as a simple lead-in to Image Designer, Dancer and Musician Musician Musicians are buffbots that give out mind substat buffs, and should always also have Dancer and simply be running a macro to hand out buffs. This is a class you play on an alt on which you leave a macro running if you want to help your guild or just help people in general while picking up some sweet tips for doing nothing - DO NOT PLAY AN ENTERTAINER AS YOUR MAIN EVER. It's an AFK class, period. Dancer See musician, except dancers buff the primary mind stat instead. However, they are almost always taken together and all buffbots will buff both Music and Dance. Image Designer It's exactly what it sounds like. You redesign peoples characters. Goon Image Designers have spoken about being paid to change peoples loving eyebrows, for gods sake. Still, it's not a very exciting class, and is mostly used to change peoples stats via Stat Migrations rather than actual image designing. Smuggler Smugglers slice weapons and armor, drastically improving their effectiveness, to the point that most players do not even consider buying unsliced weapons. They can also craft spice (drugs) which they can sell to other players - spice is basically food that offers big temporary boosts in exchange for a temporary downer at the end of the duration - and are the only profession that can trade faction points with other players. They get a pistol ability tree, but most of the abilities in this tree suck. They are a very useful if not essential class, and are a nice compliment to Armorsmith or Weaponsmith. A Master Smuggler is a requirement to take PvP faction bases. Merchant Merchant is essential if you're interested in running your own store. It allows you to have more vendors, it allows you much more customization with your vendors, it allows you to advertise your vendors on the planetary map, and it makes maintenance fees for your buildings/vendors much lower. Most good shops are run by high-level merchants. CRAFTING PROFESSIONS Armorsmith Armorsmiths make armor. Like most crafting in SWG, grinding armorsmith takes huge amounts of money and time, and then once you master it, you need to spend even more money to get to the point where you're competitive. If you're willing to put the effort in, Armorsmith will be fun and pay dividends. If not, stay away. Weaponsmith Like Armorsmith, but not as harsh. It's a big grind, but luckily, the materials to make good power hammers and swords that people will buy for lots of money are pretty easy to come by. However, if you want to branch out into other weapons, it takes as much, if not more dedication than Armorsmith. For this reason, stay away if you aren't willing to be very dedicated to your trade. Architect Architect is an easy to level crafting profession that isn't very complicated. Architects make buildings such as houses and city structures, furniture, and can also make harvesters. Harvesters are always in demand, and you can make a lot of money as an architect primarily off selling them. Droid Engineer In the original SWG, Droid Engineers could make super useful combat pets, including the ever popular suicide bomb droids. On SWGEMU, all they do is make tracking droids for bounty hunters (and bounty hunters aren't popular at all) and decorative droids. They will be fully implemented at some point, but right now it's best to avoid this prof. Bio-Engineer Bio-Engineers in the original SWG could do cool stuff like genetically clone pets for Creature Handlers. This is a long way off in the EMU though as player controlled AI isn't in yet. However, Bio-Engineer is still a good subspec for chef as it allows you to make additives for your food and drinks, and next patch Bio-Engineers will be able to enhance clothing to give it stat bonuses. Bio-Engineers are also essential in taking PvP faction bases. Chef Chefs make food and drink, for which there is massive demand as most combat players eat enough to feed 5 families during a hunting session. It requires additives from bio-engineer in order to make the good stuff, though. Tailor Tailor makes clothing. Tailor crafting is however quite boring because the only variable on clothing is how many sockets they have, which is totally random. People do buy clothing and it takes far less effort and game knowledge than other crafting professions, however. Artisan Artisan is a basic profession that leads into other crafting professions, but it's still useful in its own right, particularly because it makes vehicles. While it doesn't provide bonuses to other crafting professions, it's still a good supplement to them if you're just looking to spend your skill points. Artisan also has the surveying tree, which allows you to gather large amounts of resources by hand, and being an artisan is required in order to survey for resources (but not to drop harvesters) NOT WORKING CLASSES: Shipwright Jedi Imp/Rebel Pilot Commando - despite not working, you still need a Commando to take PvP faction bases, so if you want to make the ultimate sacrifice, you can level one. I was going to make this thread months ago, did not get around to it. Basilisk has more activity than Starsider had when I finally quit the live game. The people are generally friendly and while some people are way heavy on the RP which can be uncomfortable for a guy like me who isn't into that at all, it's a very nice server overall. I pretty much spent all of my time on tattooine since it's comparatively a ghost town and it's easy to find and plop down extractors on good ore sites as I could afford them. I got a new computer and I haven't gotten around to setting the game back up, but it's very good. All of my structures are probably dead from lack of maintenance though. It's worth noting that, unless they've added it in the last month or so, there are no pvp bases, no jedi, and creature/droid classes are broken/incomplete. I don't think any Jump To Lightspeed stuff works either. It's still very playable and very fun. I think some of the developer stances/policies are kind of wacky and stupid, but they're single-handedly responsible for reviving a good game at its peak, so I guess it's just something one has to deal with.

Tip to make it actually playable; the first thing you should do is press alt (to turn cursor mode on), click Options (the wrench) > Controls > Keymapping, click the drop down box for "load a standard keymapping" and select MMORPG modeless. This makes the game control almost exactly like a modern MMORPG.

It's also worth mentioning that NPC AI is pretty busted. I don't remember missions spawning guys who stand there and let you attack them one at a time. I remember a lot of stimpacks, ruthless agression mechanics, and dying at the early levels. Some monsters will chase you all over the planet, but mission spawns won't do poo poo to you until you attack. Faction missions pay much higher than regular missions too, so unless you're just dedicated to the art of roleplaying a neutral dude, pick a side and grind up faction missions. Radioactive ores is pretty much the only commodity I've found that reasonably fresh player is going to be able to pull out of the ground that will sell to others and not just be used to grind your crafting skill, so try to find them. Going to Corellia to do anything but sell your crafts/skills is an exercise in frustration. Especially if you're someone who wants to plop down a deed. hemophilia fucked around with this message at Jan 30, 2013 around 09:58 |

My IGN's Kyoxo, servers just went down but i've been playing waaay too long anyway. Got upto level 3 1 handed/level 3 hunting by following that guide in the OP. I think it's best to stay neutral incase we actually get a sizeable amount of players so that we can see what people want to go or whatever. Not sure if swapping factions incurs a penalty but I remember that being the case. If we do get a decently sized group i'll level up a doctor bot or an entertainer or something useful, because multilogging (as long as its on the same account and you only run 2 instances at most) is allowed.

If what hemophilia says about faction missions paying better than regular missions is true, then it'd probably be best to pick a side as soon as possible. I haven't played SWG in a long time, but if I remember correctly, non-Humans have various penalties for supporting the Empire, so Rebels might be best if we don't mostly want to be boring humans. Alternatively, it may be fun to pick whichever side is less popular among the player base, to give us more targets. I'll get started on this game later today. They may have changed this since I've been gone, but human npcs also drop credits, which in themselves yield quite a bit of early cash you're not getting if you only kill creatures.

We need a leader type to make a guild. (which I have no idea how to do). Also any opinions on factions so that we can start doing faction missions ASAP? I don't mind either way but i'm guessing Imp is the underpopulated faction so they're probably a good bet. I can almost make a second character which I think i'll make an Ent or a Doctor to buff dudes. I'm unable to leave a client open 24/7 but i'd at least have them macroing while i'm on. Is there some indication to whether you're pvp flagged or not? I've been on leave for 30 minutes but I still have the huge imp icon next to my name. A complete refresher on exactly how the system works would be nice actually if anyone knows.

I forgot how much of a time sink the original game is. I can't believe how much time I wasted when I originally played this just doing things like standing in a spaceport waiting for a shuttle. I just ran two missions out of Mos Espa and it took me forever to find them, finish them, and get back to town. I definitely forgot how animated all the characters are. Its still kind of impressive how much emoting is done just by default.

THE PWNER posted:Make a new account? Gah, why didn't I think of this? I'm in as Gyre Gimble, Ithorian Marksman/Artisan. I made enough for a Swoop and a mineral survey device with deliver missions tonight, and I'll start surveying and crafting stuff tomorrow. Waiting around for shuttles is the perfect time to fire up Netflix or something like that. Truly, SWG was a game ahead of its time.

Decided to make my second character a doctor, i'm macro levelling him by afk healing entertainers so I should be able to buff within a day or two i'm guessing. Whether i'll actually have the $ to buy buffs is another matter.

I am in as Broji Bebel. I will be doing missions in Moenia for the night if anyone wants to tag team them while they level.
