The cock of the walk

Hey, hipsters! The Strokes are releasing a new album on March 26th. Judging from the album cover, they've already mixed the album. Only one track has been released, One Way Trigger. I'm not too keen on it, but the song's not a single. The first single for Comedown Machine would be 'All the Time', which will be released February 19th.

I think Angles was a step in the right direction for the Strokes, so I'm hoping this new effort continues an upswing. It's the right length for a Strokes album, so we know it's got that going for it.

I wasn't crazy about Angles, but I can't stand that first song. If that's indicative of the sound of the rest of the album I won't bother with this one.

Agreed. Angles felt very phoned in to me, and had maybe a few songs that I enjoyed. One Way Trigger is just bad. Their first two albums were classic, but they haven't really impressed me much since then. I probably won't even bother with this one.

Angles was great and this new song kicks rear end. Color me excited.

I could go either way this one. On one hand, the first two albums are close to flawless to me. I love every tune on those. But my favorite Strokes songs are Under cover of Darkness and You Only Live Once, which are on the latter two albums. I wasn't too crazy about this tune, so I think I'll just stay cautiously optimistic. Worst comes to worst, there will probably be at least one good track to take away from it.

Are they actually going to tour this record? That's all I care about anymore. I never even listened to Angels because they refused to come to Canada on that tour.

No tour is announced yet, but I'd imagine they would.

Like I said in the Indie Megathread, I hate One Way Trigger. Angles was totally forgettable but at least it sounded like The Strokes. This sounds...well, not very much like The Strokes, and not very good either.

First Impressions Of Earth was the last good album they put out, and it's been like 7 years since that album came out, so it's high time they put out another good one. Albert Hammond Jr.'s Yours To Keep was great too, and that came out the same year as First Impressions. I don't think I ever heard Como Te Llama or Julian's solo album that came out a few years ago. Is This It and Room On Fire are pretty much untouchable. I wish they'd release something close, since they'll obviously never top those.

Hopefully this album has at least a couple good songs on it and isn't a total throwaway. Maybe One Way Trigger won't be indicative of the album as a whole. I hope, at least.

I don't want to hate on them, but I have to say, not super keen on this track. Strikes me that the tempo of the singers versus the tempo of the music is clashing, and that synth is grating. I'm looking forward to hearing more as it comes out, though, do love me some Strokes.

Their new single "All The Time" came out yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkaGHv6RLBM

It's about a thousand times better than One Way Trigger, but it's still not one of the best Strokes songs or anything.

Granted, I haven't heard Angles and my favorite album of theirs is First Impressions of Earth so maybe I'm not indicative of the general Strokes consensus.

But what I've heard so far is... really fun.

Nah, it's pretty great. The new single ("All The Time") is pretty disappointing, in my opinion. "One Way Trigger" is The Strokes doing 80s electro pop and Julian Casablancas doing his best to emulate Prince. The genre is a departure, but the melodies and layering of the instruments are unmistakably classic Strokes. I was iffy on the vocals at first because I thought the mastering was pretty lo-fi and clashed with the glossy veneer of the rest of the music, but that just ended up endearing me more to the track.

The new song sounds like The Strokes trying to recreate their Is This It/Room on Fire era sound, but they're not a group of bratty twentysomethings looking to prove their worth as the next in a line of legendary NY bands, so it just isn't as viscerally authentic as their music from that era. They sound more like a Strokes cover band, if that makes any sense.

I get the feeling (and actually had it when I heard they recorded Angles completely separate from Julian) that they're literally just riding out the five-album deal they signed with as little effort as possible.

It's a shame, because I loved the Strokes from Is This It to First Impressions of Earth.

That being said, I just listened to the stream and this record does have its moments.

The video from "All The Time" (their first single) has been released. Has a retrospective kind of vibe (notice the appearance of the YOLO abbrv. on their setlist, pioneers)

As for the song well, to me it sounds almost exactly like 'The End Has No End'.

Listening to the Pitchfork Advance stream and enjoying it, but probably because I'm not thinking of it as a Strokes album. It barely sounds like a Strokes album at all. It sounds like a different band entirely that was influenced by The Strokes. More listenable than Angles, which I found pretty forgettable.

edit: And then I get to 50 50 and it's as Strokes as you can get. What the gently caress?

Reviews are coming in, and, according to Metacritic, it's their best since Room on Fire. That's not high praise, but it's about as average a Strokes album ever.

Not to be a contrarian, but this album bored me to tears. I listened to the first 5 or 6 songs and gave up. Its almost exactly like Angles but they somehow gave less of a poo poo when they were making this one. Is their record deal completed now?

....meh

Eh, instead of ripping off Velvet Underground they are now ripping off Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not that it's a bad thing. It definitely more listenable than Angles, and even slightly better than First Impressions of Earth.

I wouldn't even compare it to Room on Fire and Is This It though - aside from "All the Time", the sound and feeling are just so different. I'm hoping they continue building on the new sound instead of trying to re-invent themselves again.

Edit: Sign I'm getting old - my 15 year-old cousin just heard of The Strokes for the first time when Comedown Machine was posted on Pitchfork a few days ago. After I suggested he listen to earlier albums, he told me that Is This It? sounded like "dad rock". loving kids, get off my lawn.

I don't understand why they don't make it all gritty sounding. They could still do this super pop stuff, but the over produced sound ruins it. Thats what was great about Is This It. It just felt like it was made in a basement in NYC.

With the lack of promotion, no live performances and the weird album art (I understand its supposed to be retro, but it's just a giant RCA logo) that this is a toss off to try and burn through their contract.

I can totally understand why a kid who missed the strokes when they exploded into the mainstream would think this. The Strokes whole thing was a garage/rock/NY revival, they "sounded" like "old bands" when they came out. That's what the whole Whit Stripes/Strokes/Et al. thing was about back then, so to a kid who missed that it's "new garage rock" probably just sounds like the rest of old bands the Strokes are imitating.

Happy Ending is my favorite, but I love the first two tracks too.

I think this album sounds more 'electronic' than previous albums. If that makes any sense.
