I've been playing the 1.5 open source release. The AI has been upgraded significantly. The new Instant Action maps are kicking my rear end.

Sadly the vast majority are NSDF. The only filthy communist map I can find doesn't work properly.

Le'me tell ya'll about them Apples.
Battlezone is a fantastic game and everyone should go and play it right now, I just found the thread and it'll be interesting to see how you play it.

I started an LP of this before but my computer exploded, and I never got the drive to do it again. Glad to see someone else is taking up the slack.

Just watched the Trailer for Bionite, and the way's their tanks move around is so wrong, the floatyness of tanks in Battlezone is like its signature move. They need to fix that if they want to achieve the same feel. Also I know that's a pre alpha demo but still.

Oh man, I didn't know a freeware of this existed. This is great - I wasted so much time as a kid with this game, sadly I never played Red Odyssey past the demo. I also played the poo poo out of BZ2, but didn't like where they took the plot and how they tied it down to #1 really.

Still, keep up the LP!

Oh how young and stupid we were back then, and how lovely internet connections were.

I came into this thread expecting that N64/PS1-era game where you drove tanks around cities and just wrecked poo poo, but that was Battletanks. Maybe you can show that one off at some point, even though I heard it was disappointing.

This is arguably the whole point of the game. It carries the atmosphere of "alternate universe 60s space race" superbly, from the NASA beeps in the communications to the textures on the structures. You might well run into Neil out there, and the bastard will totally camp your scrap fields.

I always went and just destroyed the Soviet base after securing the artifact. You'd get a dressing down but it wouldn't affect anything.

As for the next mission... oh, boy. I remember having so much trouble with it I ended up just ejecting myself up onto a high vantage that the enemy guns couldn't traverse and then painstakingly plinking away with the plasma rifle at the enemy buildings.

Nice job so far, Kitty Burger: keep up the funny commentary. :D

If I remember correctly, AIs do not react to the cosmonauts, so that if you manage to get a couple of APCs in, the troopers will just blow up everything unmolested. It's somewhat less effective in multiplayer, since a human opponent will shoot all the little men before they can do some damage.

Yeah, they do not show up on any radars iirc, but the clowncars themselves need a decent distraction to do their job properly. Luckily, that is very easy to arrange. Send the APCs (I prefer 2 of them for most assaults) to hide behind a hill in the direction you want them to attack from, then hop in a fighter and start taking potshots at enemy scavengers and their escorts.
Due to the powerful magics of Pavlov you'll quickly gather quite a fanclub in the scrapfields just to make the goddamn beeping stop. Send in the APCs and keep up your yakety sax congaline going as long as possible to give the brave cosmonauts time to ruin everything with their infinite ammo hax. :ussr:

oh yes, I'd forgotten the fail-the-mission-if-you-hang-around Thing Battlezone 1 has going on. It's only an issue in one or two missions, but it's utterly rage-inducing when it kicks in. And that hateful beep!

No audio issues, Kitty Burger, but I notice you don't use the targeting function much. Hitting "T" puts a highlight reticule onto an enemy vehicle, including a very very handy lead indicator. This alone makes the mortars much easier to aim.

I've never done a straight-up comparison of the CCA vs NSDF tanks. I think the Russian tank has more HP & ammo but is slower on the turn, whereas the American one is faster to turn and accelerate, and has a higher top speed. They have identical weapon slots but the Russian one doesn't carry a mortar by default.

And is it me, or has the freeware re-release really upped the damage on the minigun?

It uses ammo faster, but chaining the Mini-gun to the AT-Stabber for simultaneous fire is probably the most damaging thing you can use until at least halfway through the game.

Yeah, part of that is my mic and part of that is recording the system audio. I'm going to spend a bit more time making sure I record all of the voiceover at once since moving my mic even just a bit has a noticeable effect on the volume. I'll also see about turning down a few things in game just because it can get especially annoying to hear that drat beeping all the time.

The various weapon slots can be selected by pressing the F8-F11 keys. By pressing Ctrl and the relative key, you can select multiple slots and fire them all at once: you even get different target indicators showing where to aim to hit with each weapon selected.
If you have two slots with the same weapon (like the Scout, with its two Miniguns), they will be linked automatically every time you switch to either.

The Thumper is excellent at dealing with walkers. It sends them into a spin. This is crucial on many of the user-made maps I have been playing, where the level designers seemed to think difficulty = five walkers in the first ten minutes.

The (deliciously in-character) manual explains this in more detail. Essentially, the whole space race was cover to hide America's mighty space army from the masses. Both sides have some impressive biometal space battlewagons, although we sadly never see them onscreen.

The sequel manages a truly jaw-dropping moment here with the Voyager probe.

I believe their space transports show up in some of the between-missions art.

Anyhow, the US evacuates the Moon because the Soviets attack with the element of surprise and overwhelming force, following through by rapidly securing it and using it as a staging ground for their operations as they move beyond Earth. Presumably, the NSDF didn't see fit to attempt to retake the Moon since the CCA was both entrenched, had ease of reinforcement from Earth, and the Moon's own biometal reserves weren't as exhaustive compared to those on other planetary bodies. I don't remember where I read all this but I'm fairly certain I'm not making it up.

Later on the campaign goes into more detail about who controls which planets and so on.

Just a quick heads up that I haven't stopped doing this LP or anything. Time hasn't been kind and getting the ability to sit down and record missions four and five for the NSDF has been a pain in the rear end. It also doesn't help that I've replayed mission four about 11 times. It's amazing what you forget in 15 years when it comes to playing games you love. Look for mission four and mission five to be out soon and I plan on trying to get at least one mission out a week just to keep things consistent. Hopefully I won't suffer any further delays in delivering content to you fine goons.

One thing about Battlezone is that it likes to mix things up with missions where speed is essential so as not to get swarmed and missions where one has to take his time. The problem is that the only way to find out is by failing and retrying.
Still, good job with this one. Thankfully next one should be a lot easier as long as you do things in the proper order. :)

From where you saw me plant the armory and where I was located when setting up the recycler, it took about 1:15-1:30 for my second AT-Stabber to arrive. What makes it a bit worse is if you tell your supporting offensive units to get repairs or re-up on ammo, they will park their asses on the very spot they are on and wait for the supply drop. I imagine it is more useful than I am making it out to be but for that particular mission, it really wasn't as useful as I would have liked it to be.

Depending on your perspective, that could be a horrible thing. I find it to be a good thing though. In my eyes, it forces you to be a bit more fluid and not get stuck into a certain sort of mindset when it comes to your play style.

Since I am a nut and keep all my old game boxes and manuals and such and it was brought up in the thread earlier, I think in the next day or so I will take a few photos and maybe some scans of the manual that came with the game. It really is a nifty looking thing and I miss the days when they did awesome stuff like making the manual for a game look like a top secret field manual.

One of the much-appreciated additions in 1.5 is that the AI units will check to see if another supply source is closer when you order them to get a repair or reload. Only if there's nothing nearby will they get the armoury to launch a pack.

God damn, you're worse than useless; you're actually harmful!
The music was a nice touch, good job. Also, wouldn't you just have to shoot the AT Stabber twice as long if you didn't have two of them? It makes misses hurt that much more, but doubling up seems like the best course of action in spite of ammo consumption.
