This month's theme is faces and heads. Nobody knows what heads are or where they came from, but here's how to draw them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EPNYWeEf1U
This video (and the other videos on this channel) goes over the basics of constructing a head using using the popular 'loomis' method.

It's helpful to imagine the head (as well as anything else) broken down into simplified planes in order to wrap your mind around what you're actually seeing when you view a photo of a face. It's helpful to run your fingers over your own face as well if you're a tactile learner in order to help you learn these. You can see a full photoset of this planar head model aqui http://drawingthefantastic.blogspot...e-material.html

I've been using The Drawing Script website here as an easy reference for head drawing. You check off what catagories of reference you want to appear, set the time each one will stay up on screen and you're off - very convenient. These heads were drawn with the timer set to 240-300 seconds.

Nice stuff, Tony! Like seeing comics pop up in these threads. I really dig your style. Love the dog party crashers.

I don't think I ever posted this but I'm trying to get ahead on own comic stuff (this is from months ago)

Dudes! I am alive! It has probably been at least a year or two since I've been on SA.

TDH, I adore the brushed lettering you did for the title! And the tadpole holocaust lettering is epic, too. The black background makes the pages really hard to read for some reason, though. It's probably too much work at this point, but I think it would look really good if you outlined each strip in the same drybrush style you used for the 'animals' title. ps, Weebie rulez.

Here's what I've been working on in my free time! It's a portrait of Persephone-- I finished the line art last week and I'm working on the colors now.

And here are some more pieces from the past few months:

i completely agree with your assessment, the black fill was a quick-finish that i did because i was up against a deadline and just could not spend any more time on it

it is going into a little comic anthology, but i am going to completely rework the layout in the future and re-use it for my own book that i am working on which will come out this year! i like your idea and will give it a shot along with the other possible-plan i have for it in my head.

also, awesome work as always!!!

Oh well since it's faces I might as well post an update on my wax-face

I really need to stop getting caught in the rendering trap; it takes about a thousand times longer to finish something and doesn't look very good in the end anyway. Does anybody have any advice for teeth? I can't find a brush that works well for them yet (as is blatantly obvious).

Also this isn't mine but a friend of mine spent a really long time on it so I feel like I should show it off as much as possible.

What I fortuitous theme. Last weekend I decided to try linoleum printing, so I drew this on a piece I had

What's dark there (it's just light grey marker on grey surface for my own benefit) will not be carved out, along with the hair. I've got all of the details already carved, but I've hit a bump with the background. I was going to take it all out, but now I'm thinking it's too light and I might do some white-hatching-on-black, either in the left corner or near the face. But I guess that's something I can play around with using test prints.

Looks cool. You should definitely entertain/do something with the background. A large area like that on a lino carving will collapse once you put any pressure on it to print. Unless you're really careful with inking the lino you'll get ink all over the carved-out negative space and subsequently on your print. Unless its gonna be tiny I guess.

I've been working on this for a while now but had to put it off for a bit (didn't have access to my main comp). Anyway, it's a work in progress and I still have a lot to do. I'm still having problems with the hair, it looks better than it did now that I've changed the colour but it still doesn't look right

Well, keeping in mind that I'm not an expert on skin tones by any means, I think that the waxyness could be because there's no distinct color zones to the face (although those tend to be very subtle to be almost imperceptible, especially in women), there's also no specular highlights or subsurface scattering, but those wouldn't necessarily show up on this example anyway. It would help if you posted your reference image.

A quick elephant study. I've been trying to branch out from the typical dark pencil/pen on white paper. I'm also making an effort to draw more this year; it seems to come in fits and starts rather than something I do on a regular basis.

There's no one I've ever met, no matter how successful they are, who hasn't said they had their failures along the way.

On the upper hair, push the highlights brighter, harder, and thinner. Just a little bit should really help. The hair in general feels very soft, but the highlights need to be firmer.

Also, her right eye is really really wonky.

The hair seems like it might be in a different perspective than the rest of her head. It makes the structure of the skull seem all wrong, like it's smooshed at the top or something.

Very quick and sloppy paintover- I don't do much photorealism so this might not be a great stylistic match, but my suggestion is to chunk it up a little bit, and maybe warm up your highlights rather than going for a more neutral/white shine. I think an issue you might be running into is that the brushwork is so fine that her hair looks kind of like one supersmooth mass, when I think real hair tends to be less perfect. I like the rendering of the face a lot- you have some nice subtle skin definition going.

This. I was going to say her eyes were too far up on the head but since the rest of the face is very well done and in proportion I would suggest leaving that alone, except for that right eye. She needs more of a forehead and for the hair to be pulled back.
The eyes should be 1/2 way down the head and I think yours are at like 1/3.

Thanks for the advice everyone

Blade_of_tyshalle: Thanks for pointing out that eye. I didn't even spot that before but now you've pointed it out it's really obvious.

Diseased Dick Guy: The hair in my ref is really crap (one of my many bad hair choices) so I'm kinda making it as I go along. Also the top of the head is cut off in the ref. I think it might be a good idea to have a good look at some skulls and study exactly what is going on with shape and angles and stuff.

Frown Town: Thanks for he paint over, it's a massive help. I really need to experiment more with including different hues. When I think about it now, even dyed hair will have lots of different colours in it.

All this has been a big help, I am going to work on it some more tomorrow and take your suggestions on board

Do what now?

Movin' my "draw-more-regularly-and-get-back-into-practice" resolution to right now. Just a couple quick sketches from this evening.

An attempt drawing the same guy to portray a fearful/paranoid mood. I feel like I probably messed up the lighting on this (which is something I need more practice on to begin with) so any advice on improvements here are more than welcome.

You just need more of his features to be similar for it to be obviously the same guy. In the first picture you have a distinct outline on the hair, distinct eyebrows, distinct eyes, distinct shoulders and a distinct moustache. In the second picture the hair and moustache are obscured by the shadowing, the eyebrows and eyes are in too different a shape, and his shoulders are completely missing. Any one of those features being clearly the same as the first drawing would carry the character over.

edit: something of mine (uh that is to say the exact same drawing I've posted 3 times already ) so I don't come off as completely bossy:

I decided the solution to stop her from looking waxy was to PLASTER HER IN MAKEUP. I'm turning her into a Shirabyōshi since I've been playing tons of Shogun 2 Total War and wanted to draw one anyway. Having fun trying to do the makeup while also despairing that all the work I did on the skin is going to be completely obscured (although it's probably for the best). Her lipstuff needs a major redesign but I honestly have no idea what it looks like on somebody in this kind of makeup when they're smiling since none of them ever do. I guess I'm covering myself in it tomorrow and taking a reference shot from that.
