Details! Title: The Showdown Effect Genre: Action, Platformer Developer: Arrowhead Game Studios Publisher: Paradox Interactive Release Date: 5 Mar 2013 Price: 9.99$ USD What is this? The Showdown Effect 2.5D multiplayer action game brought to us by the creators of Magicka, Arrowhead Game Studios, and published by Paradox Interactive. Customize your action hero, grab a gun, and see if you can survive the cinematic madness and cheesy one-liners that make up The Showdown Effect. The Showdown Effect will retail for 9.99$ USD. It's set for release on March 5th. What's the gameplay like? Fast paced, 2.5D platforming multiplayer beat/shoot 'em up type game. Think Soldat or Worms meets Smash Bros. Players can pick a base character (4 included in the beta currently) whom each have their own special power, then they can equip said character with a huge (not so huge in beta thought) arsenal of weapons, including shotguns, frying pans, lightsabers, assault rifles, grenades, katanas, gauss guns and anything in between. Then you're thrown in a live movie-like environment and fight to the death, using tons of moves such as climbing walls, wall jumping, vaulting, dodging, etc. Also you can totally dress up your character with medieval armor or Neo-like stuff! Where can I get it? The game is currently in open beta, use this link to sign up to the beta. You will need to get 3 people to sign up using your referral link, thought. (Or you know, do it yourself, winkwink.) Then just keep watching your inbox until you get an e-mail from Paradox with a code you can use to activate it on Steam! Woo! There are currently 10 playable characters in the game, a bunch of different weapons, each weapon having a different weapon skin and tons of cosmetic wearable items to unlock with AC/$$. AC is the current 'currency' in the game, which you get at the end of each match for kills, achievements, etc. You can set a loadout for each character, meaning you can equip each of them with different weapons of your choice. Great OP, this game is rad as heck and I can't wait to get some games going with goons whenever they fix the matchmaking. As it stands now it seems like only certain people can connect to each other, maybe it's region locked? Either way this game gives a strong Soldat vibe, I suggest checking it out!

I see Western developers are finally getting revenge on Japan's 8-bit era Engrish by using terrible machine-translated Japanese in their games now. Game looks pretty cool though.

Played some of this last night. It's interesting and could probably be fun if there were more than three or four players on a given map. Maybe if damage was tweaked down a little as well although I wonder if that'd make it too spongey. Definitely gotta mess with the default binds a bit. At least I found it a little odd sometimes.

"Fight to the death... or die trying!" is a pretty drat good tagline. It's fun to play as the girl with her jet-jump ability, run into the middle of two other people fighting, use the tackle to knock one down, then jet away immediately. For no reason but to cause chaos and confusion.

I would love a rundown on how people do flying kicks and all the hidden moves. Hands on the game had tight controls but needs some serious balance. Rocket Launcher>Machine Gun>Uzi>Pistol>Disconnecting>throwing keyboard across the room>Shotgun>crying. I think the tackle needs to be more aimable rather then just a leap.

You can press Z to go to hand-to-hand combat, pretty sure that's how you unleash cool moves. You were probably also fighting against the kung fu guy you can buy, whose special is a flying kick. Like this game so far. At first I found it kind of iffy, but I got into it as I tried it more and more. I've found that the rocket launcher is absolutely amazing for people who don't know how to deal with it. People who don't know the timing will usually take the rocket, or try to kill you and then the game decides to launch your rocket from your dead corpse anyway and you get a kill. It's just the best tear harvesting machine. That said, it's actually weak against people who are primarily melee or use the shotgun, because they'll just rip you to shreds in close range while you desperately try to hit body as they hop over you again and again.

I've been enjoying it, although I seem to have trouble getting a game going with all my friends in it. Theres always 1 or 2 people who can't connect. I've been employing some cheese strategies on neo tokyo. I basically elevator camp, and keep moving up and down until I can find a melee kill. If I'm in any kind of danger of dying I jump into the elevator and hope the other side has no activity then bandage myself  I'm sure people will soon smarten up to this strat, but until then, I will bathe in my success

I got my beta key through the referral program, but they also were kind enough to give me 3 spare keys for the three people who I referred. Problem is, only one of them wanted the key. It is not region locked - they just left the ol' Steamworks "Only allow people that have the same download region set play together" tickbox checked. Yeah, seriously. Jump on Mumble and coordinate download regions to play together!

We've been arranging some goon-only games in the showgoons IRC, so if you want to get in on some goon-only-multiplayer-head-chopping-action you should totally join us. It takes a little setting up (due to having to set a common download region, we think vv) but it's really fun. The info to the IRC is at the bottom of the OP.
