In December of 2012, CM Punk and Kevin Steen shared the honors with a tied victory for Champion of the month. It seemed appropriate enough, considering that every single winner of the PSP poll in 2012 was a former ROH Champion.

Now it's time to decide who was Punchsport Pagoda’s Pro-Wrestling Champion for January, 2013. To be eligible, a wrestler needs to have held any of the currently Punchsport Pagoda accepted title belts for at least one day of the month OR had at least one title defense since becoming Champion. This means if someone wins the title on the last day of the month and defends it that night, they're eligible, and if they win the title on the first day of the month and don't defend it at all, they're eligible. The only case where someone won't be eligible is if they win the title on the last day of the month and don't defend it.

Now onto the eligible contenders for the month just gone:

CM Punk (FORMER WWE Champion) - Punk's historic 14 month title reign FINALLY came to an end in January, as Punk was finally given the main event of a PPV as he'd always demanded (getting top billing even over the Royal Rumble match itself), only to lose the title he cared so much about. It was an excellent final month for his reign, as things heated up nicely and Punk seemed to take the gloves off to deliver some of the quality promos we have come to expect of him in the past. He also delivered in the ring, but after over a year of Punk being a constant presence in the polls, this MIGHT be the last month for a little while that you'll get a chance to vote for him.

The Rock (WWE Champion) - It seemed only fitting that Punk's reign came to an end at the hands of "The Great One". In somewhat controversial fashion, one of the greatest pro-wrestlers of all time returned to the ring in pursuit of the WWE Title and defeated CM Punk to gain his 8th WWE Title reign, and his first in 10 years. Rock doesn't NEED to be in WWE anymore, and some might argue that he shouldn't be Champion again, but there is no doubting that the crowd is absolutely ecstatic that he has returned, and equally excited to see him with the belt once more (especially since he took it away from CM Punk). Who knows how much longer Rock will be around, and how long he'll hold on to the title, but those are questions for another day. Right now the question is, has Rock's reign as Champion so far been enough to get your vote?

Kevin Steen (ROH World Champion) - Steen has had a quiet January which may cost him votes this time around. After a brutal December, Steen defeated a local wrestler in a "half main event" at a house show, as well as surviving a 4 Way Elimination match later in the month against Michael Elgin, Eddie Edwards and Roderick "Roddy" Strong. The question really is where to next for Steen, who defeated his greatest opponent in El Generico last year and now is seemingly in search of a new nemesis. Will anyone else stand up? Is Jay Lethal really the way they plan on going? Does Steen get your vote this month?

The Big Show (FORMER World Heavyweight Champion) - Big Show ended his title reign in a surprise television title switch at the start of January, allegedly something to do with confusion over signing a new contract. In perhaps the best (or at least most emotionally satisfying) match of his title reign, a newly racist Show was defeated in a Last Man Standing match.

Alberto Del Rio (World Heavyweight Champion) - Continuing to surprise everybody with the success of his face turn (especially when compared to The Miz's), Del Rio came to the defense of his buddy Ricardo and stood up to everything that Big Show had before burying him under an announce table to win their Last Man Standing match and gain the World Heavyweight Championship. After a strong start to his career was badly derailed by his loss to Edge at Wrestlemania, it feels like Del Rio is finally reaching his potential in WWE. They may be playing up the "Mexican hero" angle a little strongly (will he work as a face champ when he gets to areas with low Latino populations?) but Del Rio has been firing on all cylinders in promos and in the ring, and really living up to all the high hopes people have had for him ever since first seeing his "a product of a better place" video packages. Does he get your vote?

Jeff Hardy (TNA World Champion) - After gaining the TNA title, Jeff Hardy cemented his place at the top of the card by defeating former Champion Austin Aries as well as longest reigning TNA Champion Boddy Roode. It was further solidified that he belongs in the top spot at the Genesis PPV when he took on both Aries and Roode (probably two of the best Champions TNA has ever had) at the same time in an elimination match and defeated them both. Later in the month he successfully defended his belt against another TNA great in Christopher Daniels, only to be "injured" by an assault by a member of Aces & 8s as their storyline bafflingly continues. People weren't happy to see Hardy get the belt but he's been holding up his end in the ring since winning it. Do you think his work in January so far deserves your vote?

These Guys Suck!! (Disdain/Alternate Option) - Whether you think none of the current champions deserve your vote, you want to write-in an alternate vote or you just want to see the poll results - this is the box to tick!

Last year there was a push to include some extra champions in the monthly polls (in particular one of the puro promotion's champion - NJPW?) and I asked people to write something up/PM me something/link something/do something so I'd have something to include. I've received nothing, so this month it's basically the usual suspects. Once again, if you really want to have an extra champion on the poll, take the time to write up something about what they've done during the month and PM it to me. Thanks!

Also, hopefully the new "prior winners" section isn't too big, I was a little tired of the text version but I'm a bit concerned at the size of the post once all the images are loaded. I reduced the size as much as I could while still leaving them readable, any suggestions on changes to make (or if you just want to stick with the old text version in a separate post) would be appreciated.

Poll runs for five days as always, your single vote DOES matter as last month clearly indicates.

I have to vote "None of the Above" for the first time since Tanahashi had the best championship match on the best show of the month.

I usually vote Steen but he did gently caress all this month in ROH. I like Rock and I'm glad to see him get one last reign as champ, but the match itself wasn't that fantastic. ADR's face turn has been great but I have a hard time voting for the holder of what I see as a secondary championship.

Gonna vote for the Rock because after being gone for a while he sure picked up the slack coming back and winning the title from Punk, his hard times styled promo at the start of RR was great too, god drat. Oh and this may be unrelated, but I am still shocked Miz won '10 Champion of the Year and the first two months of '11, because my god was his run terrible. Nonetheless, those are some really neat graphics.

I voted for the Rock. After just trying to ignore him whenever he was on my television, he really turned it up against Punk, was really entertaining and reminded me why I adored him in the first place. When he won the championship, I said "yaaaay" at my television, so that's why he gets my vote.

When he starts feuding with John Cena again, I probably won't vote for him. So here's to the Rock!

Also, those graphics are really cool, J-Ru!

I would be absolutely delighted to include Hiroshi Tanahashi in the next poll, honestly! Please, please, please give me something to write up about him or at least link me to a results page, though! I don't know anything about the guy and at the moment pretty much all I could write about him would be,"The IWGP Heavyweight Champion is very highly regarded and defended his title against Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 7 at the start of January."

Also I voted for Punk because I felt like he really knocked it out of the park in his final month as champ, but I was sorely tempted by Alberto Del Rio who has been amazing since his face turn/title win.

It's kind of bizarre looking back at that period of time, because for 8 months the two top fan-favorite champs here at PSP were Kane and The Miz.

Some STATS for the history of PSP Monthly/Yearly Champs!
  • CM Punk is by far the most decorated poll champion with 15 monthly wins and 3 yearly wins.
  • He also holds the largest majority victory of any month, completing his July 2011 poll at 174 leading with 88% of the vote! Not a single other champion that month earned more than 6 votes.
  • 2012 is the only year where all major world titles for that year won monthly representation at least once.
  • 2011 is the year that had the largest variety of different champions to win that month, with 8 different wrestlers coming on top in the polls for that year.
  • However, 2012 had the smallest variety of champions to win for that year, with only four wrestlers winning!
  • Daniel Bryan and Christian are the only champions to appear on the list representing two different promotions.
  • The longest streak a champion has had was Daniel Bryan, winning 5 straight months.
  • The longest gap a champion went between multiple wins was Kane, with a 24 month layover.
  • The champion of the year to have won the least amount of monthly polls was Takeshi Morishima, who didn't win a single monthly poll in 2007.
  • Davey Richards suffered the largest fall from grace for any concurrent champion, winning his first month with 66 votes winning 41% of the entire poll, to earning a measly 2 votes the very next month.
  • The closest the Comedy Option has ever come to winning was in September of 2010, Matt Hardy coming in with 26% of the vote.

I started a "I was wrong about The Miz" thread and even I didn't think he was anything of the year. He also won Wrestler of the Year in the PSP annual awards. It was weird.

The love for him reached a crazy fever pitch, but WWE booking took care of that post-haste!

Don't forget that 2010 wasn't the best year in wrestling, especially in the WWE. Miz was breath of fresh air, and his schtick hadn't gotten old yet. Plus there was an element of both a long-time wrestling fan becoming the Champ, and WWE actually making a new (potential) main-eventer, even if it didn't end up that way.

Del Rio's Face turn is fantastic, and he's not just some guy who decided 'I'm for THE FANS'. He's a guy who said 'hey, stop beating up my friend.', and that's still most of his character. He gets the crowd into it, but Big Show isn't attacking the fans to annoy him, he's going after Ricardo. Even though Angry Hobo Punk is amazing, Del Rio went from floundering doing nothing to someone I can really get behind, and I don't have the nostalgia to vote Rock.

If I remember right, there was a kind of odd issue with the forums where some votes "changed" when polls were put into the archives? Whether that's true or not, it's the reason I always save a screencap of the final results so I have something to refer back to. Morishima tying with Edge was always a (welcome) surprise to me because he never won a single monthly poll despite having an amazing run as ROH Champion.

Also here's another fun little stat to consider:

Of the champs in this month's poll, three of them have been wrestling professionally for major promotions across three different decades. Of the three (Rock, Big Show and Jeff Hardy), Jeff Hardy is the youngest and also the guy who debuted FIRST, wrestling as a 16 year old in WWE in 1994

CM Punk was also wrestling in the 90s but didn't really shift into any promotion considered notable (or beyond a glorified backyard fed) until the 2000s

He didn't really do anything since becoming champion to warrant many votes - just a single promo from memory (though it was a good one) while Punk had the previous weeks of the month as champ to go off of, and Alberto Del Rio had a pretty good quality month as champ.

Indeed, which I noted at the time was clearly people voting based on their like of Bryan. I'm not saying people don't like the Rock, but Bryan did have months of a well received title run before that final vote, while Rock became champ at the same time Punk ended up a historic title run.
