Nearly 100,000 Ethiopian Jews have moved to Israel under the Law of Return since the 1980s, but their Jewishness has been questioned by some rabbis. Last year, the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who also holds the health portfolio, warned that illegal immigrants from Africa “threaten our existence as a Jewish and democratic state”.

Haaretz published an extract from a letter sent by the Ministry of Health to units administering the drug. Doctors were told “not to renew prescriptions for Depo Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment”.

Sharona Eliahu Chai, a lawyer for the Association of Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), said: “Findings from investigations into the use of Depo Provera are extremely worrisome, raising concerns of harmful health policies with racist implications in violation of medical ethics. The Ministry of Health’s director-general was right to act quickly and put forth new guidelines.”

In its racist quest for an ethnically homogeneous state, a policy of racial purity that would not be tolerated by any other country, Israel has been sterilizing Ethiopian Jews to keep the country white, to maintain the whiteness of Israel. Ethiopians have struggled to have their Jewishness recognized. They subvert the sought for racial construct that Israel builds its identity around. It is yet another brick in the wall of Israel's isolation from human rights concerns.

It's not surgical or permanent, but "temporary sterilization" is perfectly fine shorthand for "performing a medical procedure that renders the patient unable to bear children for a period of time" (after which they will be injected with their next "inoculation").

Just for an idea how widespread this practice is, Ethiopian Jews are being administered Depo Provera at 43x the rate of the general Israeli population and this has cut their birth rate in half over the past 10 years.

And as always, this kind of thing fits into a broader framework of racial protection. For example, for years Israel has had teams of psychiatrists to "rescue" Jewish women who date Arab men. They are really into this whole eugenics , I think the interior minister put it best when he said that the country "belonged to the white man".

American conservatives love Israel for essentially racist reasons, as they're a bastion of white Jewish people in the Middle Eastern sea of brown. The years of defending Israel's as a staunch American ally have made it impossible for any politician to speak out against them without getting tarred and feathered. It's one of those self-reinforcing loops, like the way criminal penalties keep increasing because no politician wants to be labelled soft on crime.

It's also objectively wrong because "major Israeli health providers" aren't immigration centres and that's where the figure of 43x the standard rate of administration comes from.

In addition to what other people said, Cold War proxy fights- for a while, Israel was buying lots of American (and to a certain extent British and French) military equipment while Syria and Egypt were buying Soviet gear. The Egyptians eventually moved into the Western camp, partially because of the Camp David Accords giving them an American defense subsidy.

I first saw this a couple of days ago, but honestly can't remember if it was imgur, /r/politics or here in D&D. The thing I remember is how badly my heart broke reading about it. The only thing I want is to see this hit every single news station out there, but I know it won't. Part of me thinks that it'll be good to not get out there because the racists will come out of the woodwork to celebrate their "initiative." Oh please, the NRA has more loving power than does the "isreal" lobby. America tolerates Israels poo poo because Israel serves as a useful tool for maintaining American hegemony in the western mediterranean. If Israel in anyway shape or form goes against US policy, you would swiftly see the heel brought down.
