Creating a thread so it doesn't clog up the General Questions thread. Background: I have been entrusted to sell my father's rather large gun collection for him, which is being given to me through an intrafamilial transfer with the DOJ. I am a rather casual firearms enthusiast, I've been around and fired them for my whole life and my dad used to shoot competitively/work in a gun shop when I was young. However, I've never been one of those people who can rattle off models or knows a lot of the technical aspects of the guns, thus I'm pretty unfamiliar with their monetary worth. I investigated a few of the local gun shops and felt very uncomfortable; lot's of creepy (and potentially racist!) old dudes treating me like I was dumb (I'm a woman in my 20's.) I live in Oakland CA so there are far fewer options for shops/dealers than I am accustomed to growing up out in the boonies. I will probably end up keeping a few of the guns myself and have friends who are interested in buying them and I am not interested in consigning at any of the local shops, I will just find a FFL to do the transfer for me when the time comes. Folks were very kind and offered to help me get an approximate value of the firearms, so I will be posting photos and descriptions of them in small groups to keep it manageable. There are about four dozen total. There's some neat/rare things in here, so it might also be interesting gunporn for some goons as well. I am not attempting to sell them over the forums and it will be a few weeks (I'm assuming) to get all of the paperwork in order. As I said before, I have friends interested in most of them depending on the price I name but if you'd like to PM me to get dibs if one of those falls through, I don't mind, but all chat in that vein will be on backchannels. Please don't clog the thread. Here's the first photo dump: Rock Island Armory .45 m1911 - never fired ![]() ![]() Smith & Wesson .357 seven round revolver - short barrel, 3.5in, silver with black handle ![]() ![]() Smith & Wesson .357 seven round revolver - short barrel, 3.5in, black with wood handle ![]() Smith & Wesson .357 seven round revolver - long barrel, 5in, black with wood handle ![]() Smith & Wesson .38 Special, five round S&W8PL ![]() I'll try to answer any questions or clarifications to the best of my abilities. I'm using an iphone 4 for the photos, but let me know if you need more angles or there's a better way to take the photos. Thanks! E: Weird, I thought I selected an icon. Could a mod be kind enough to change it for me?

Is the gyrojet really gold plated or was that just the white balance being off?

I'm planning to keep the gyrojet unless someone makes me an insane offer or something like that, but I'd definitely like to get it appraised and find out like, what the hell it is and get it insured. For comedy, look up the reviews for Old West Guns in El Cerrito on google... dude is rated like 8/30 and almost every review talks about him being a dick and racist. Someone recommended a spot in Castro Valley I'm going to drive and check out probably Monday.

Mike has had gyrojets in his inventory before and knows more gun knowledge in his finger nail clippings than the average gun store owner. Tell him your casual acquaintance Mr. Zutler said you may be able to help with appraisals for a family collection you are not interested in selling but for insurance reasons.

MAKE NO BABBYS posted:Smith & Wesson .38 Special, five round S&W8PL Can you get a model number off this revolver? When you open the cylinder, look in the groove in the frame where the cylinder crane would sit—it'll be right under the barrel. Should say something like MOD 36 or MOD 37. If it doesn't say MOD anything, it'll be a pre-# Smith & Wesson revolver (most likely the Chief's Special) and will alter its value accordingly (up, generally speaking).

Anyway I know I posted some slightly higher than average prices for the guns when you first posted the list. I think you could get that kind of money so if someone utterly low balls you I would tell them to get lost. You are in California? I would double check what are your local laws with shipping guns out of state OR even within the state. California seems to have laws designed to mess with people. The actual cost for shipping a firearm is pretty low, think double digits starting from $20 so don't think of that as being prohibitive. The transfer and shipping costs are obviously then upon the buyer and you really have less effort in a sense compared to meeting a buyer in person sinc you are selling so many and you could be dropping them off at the shipping office at one time.... Also if a gun has a magazine that comes with it, I would list the ammunition capacity and how many magazines you have. Paper manuals and original boxes also increase value. You could also consider posting a Classified ad on Calguns. You might have a buyer next door for all you know

Pops is an attorney and looking it up.) Between panic and what seems to be a scarcity (or perceived scarcity) I'm going to push for higher prices. A lot of my friends who are interested are tattooers who I may do partial trade for tattoo time with, so the higher the monetary value at the moment is something they're likely to be okay with. I have two huge boxes of accessories and extra magazines, paper work, etc. I need to go through and match everything up... and a giant trash bag of cases, belts, etc. its kind of a nightmare.

I'm glad this thread happened, I'm glad these pics were posted. I feel like that Ruger Mark II is worth more in CA because it doesn't have the stupid marking on it warning about now being a toy or a load chamber indicator. Alright well you're lucky I'm both bored and a nerd. I put together a spreadsheet : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwI...EZrS3B1MU0/edit I found pretty much all the guns as specifically as I was able on calguns - restricted mostly to things that sold and threw in a few sold gunbroker auctions for good measure. I also tried to keep references to guns sold in the past 2 or so years. Typical rule of thumb when selling on Calguns at least is to start your asking price $100 more than you actually want. I adjusted most of the asking prices towards the high side as you said - some additional details like specific model #s on the S&W revolvers would make it easier. As for laws here - few in-state FFLs will allow you to ship to them as a private individual, the only ones I'm familiar with are up here in the Bay Area already. In addition, the pistols would have to be on the drop list in order to be shipped to someone in state. Private party transactions are exempt from the drop list - there is some kind of reference on the books to only selling 6 handguns in PPTs per year but I don't think it is enforced. Shipping out of state should pose few legal hassles but I would pretty much guarantee that selling to local Californians is going to be both the most profitable and easiest way to get rid of guns you don't want - it may just take awhile. With the exception of your Glocks, most of what you have posted so far isn't really affected all that much by current panic pricing. If you are going to schedule to meet people to sell guns out here, I'd recommend City Arms East in Pleasant Hill, Reed's in Santa Clara, RMB Enterprises in Milpitas and Highbridge Arms in San Francisco. Avoid Old West Gun in Albany and Target Masters West in Milpitas - those are the two worst places to do private party transfers in the Bay Area. If I remember I'll try and update that google doc as you post more guns/info.

Well put it this way, I don't think the CA legal "modern" guns would sell well outside CA. I am sure that Glock comes with ten round magazines, for example. The guns that "only Californians want to own" I would sell in-state. The rest I think are uncommon enough that outside of CA people would pay a premium to have them shipped to them.

One thing you can say about gun collectors in CA, on average, is that they have a lot of money. Uncommon items sell well here and, especially pistols that are off drop list, will typically command $100+ above national market price.

I'll give you ten bucks for the dog. ZenMastaT is going up the right alley. Finished auctions on Gunbroker are a good gauge. We've also got at least a few people here who have a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson a fairly comprehensive guide to some of the stranger and older models. Pretty much everything in here except for the gold plated gyrojet and hilarious palm-sized guns are very much working guns. You're going to see a bit of stuff like depreciation and all that other poo poo, but guns "bottom out" waaay higher than a lot of things -- like a quarter of their retail value for an extremely used model. It's not like a car and nowhere near like electronics. If you enjoy shooting, I'd seriously consider making an offer yourself on some of them. The MkII in particular is something you could very wisely hang on to for the rest of your life if you continue to enjoy shooting. Also, there will be dick jokes, brokedicks, and brokedicks making dick jokes in this subforum. For everyone who does not like dick jokes, I will make two and they will be even worse.
