So Eldora is already sold out, but here's some awesome news that got buried a bit:

Kevin Swindell hired for 15 NASCAR Nationwide events
Kevin Swindell, who has won the Chili Bowl Nationals four consecutive years, has landed a part-time NASCAR Nationwide Series ride with Biagi-DenBeste Racing. Swindell, who won an ARCA Racing Series stock car event last season, will wheel the team's No. 98 in 15 events.

The Chili Bowl is one of the coolest events in racing, hope Kevin can do well. Here's his win the A-Feature last month to complete the four-peat

So, let's say me and the other half are planning a trip to a race, most likely next spring though maybe this fall if funds allow.

We're almost exactly equidistant between Texas and Talladega. Which should we choose, and how stupid is this question because it's obviously Talladega?

Funny story about this.

There was a mini meltdown on my twitter and facebook feed about big time sponsors dropping and that Jeff Gordon didn't have a sponsor because Dupont left.

I had to explain to them that DuPont's sponsorship with Gordon was for their automotive paint, they sold that division off, the new company changed it to Axalta instead of DuPont, and under the new company they are still a sponsor for this season. People on facebook are still arguing with me on this.

Some dudes about to get unfriended and I will do so after sending them a rather rude message about learning to read.

I've actually never been (I live in MA) but everybody I've talked to that has gone has suggested going to the Chase race in the fall rather than the June race because the heat and humidity just makes it a lovely time. Money being dependent the June race is probably cheaper than the Chase race but that is what I've heard from most people that have been to the races up there.

Talladega, by a longshot. Food is cheap and the portions are generous, the seats are cheap, and the atmosphere is something else. It's not terrible to get in/out of there, especially coming from the west on I-20, and if you don't stay at the track accommodations in Birmingham are cheap if you plan ahead. We booked 3 months ahead of the race and got into the Holiday Inn @ 99 bucks, whereas folks were paying 250+ for the same rooms but booking the night before the race.

Just remembered and noticed that everyday on speedweeks from the friday before the unlimited to the 500 will have cars going around the track. Hopefully some temporary banking can be placed very quickly on the backstretch of the big oval so it's not completely flat.

The idiots arguing about Axalta not being DuPont reminded me of my aunt's stupid rear end boring husband (I refuse to call him uncle). For the longest time, me and my parents would always get in arguments with him because he kept saying the Truck Series and the (then) Busch Series were not NASCAR. I even dragged his rear end to the computer and loaded up the series logos for both of them with the NASCAR logo proudly emblazoned on them and he still didn't believe us. The fact he even married my crazy aunt should have been alarms to how stupid he was anyway.

The weird thing is, both are right IMO. Bruton is rich enough that he could help if he wanted, and TBR seems like a team that wants to eventually be a full time race team.....but start and parks are terrible and there are a few teams out there just making money off of showing up.

No idea how to fix it.

Yeah I had the same reaction when I read the article. I'm not big on S 'n P teams but I understand it is kind of a necessary evil for some of these guys to make a living and fund other things. I see Baldwin's point saying hey, you don't like it, then how about at your tracks we make a deal with some sponsors that you know and we'll have the funding to make a full race. But I see Bruton's point saying it's not really his job to find these guys sponsors and it'd be nice to have a 43 car field where all are trying not to get last place.

If it weren't so lucrative to start and park then I think you would see some of the start and park teams dissapear, or at least teams that run multi-car start and parks, they would be down to 1 car but I think the flip side of that would be seeing only 43 cars or less showing up to events. How would Bruton feel if it were some of his tracks that couldn't even draw enough drivers to fill the field out, never mind the half empty grandstands?

E: does Bruton have any say in how the purse is structured or does the sponsor of the race itself structure the purse payout?

Neither I believe.

I think the payout structure for the actual race purse is determined by NASCAR. The different bonuses are determined by the sponsors. Which is how you get someone finishing 3rd and taking home more money than the winner. If you look at the associate sponsor labels near the front tire, you see a lot of cars with similar ones, thats because they are enrolled into the bonus programs with the company.

I could be wrong on that but I think thats how its done.

I knew about the bonuses, like the Raybestos Rookie of the Race and all that stuff that gets given out but I was unsure of how the purse payout was structured. I figured the sanctioning body wouldn't have much to do with the prize money end of it but I guess it makes sense so the sponsor or track owner couldn't do anthing to gently caress with how much money is given to those guys in the back of the pack.

It would be kind of funny to put in some crazy bonus pay out for coming in 22nd or something like that so the back half of the field would actually have something to race for/make it interesting to see them fighting over a spot 2 laps down.

I don't know if that will change anything.

Start and park is a result of a decent paycheck for last place. The goal for start and park is to turn a profit at minimal risk. As long as they make the paycheck for 35-43 enough to turn a profit, it will be there. The only way to fix that is either drastically reduce the purse money at the back of the field or regulate that you have to have certain criteria to start the race. You have S&P teams that are pulled off the track because they don't have a crew chief/spotter/pit crew. Simple answer is to make those positions be vested by Nascar similar to how the drivers must be, and then require them to start the race, if you don't start the race you are not eligible for prize money. That in and of its self won't end it, but its the simple solution to start. Beyond that really the best you can do is require that someone run X% of the race to qualify for purse money. The problem with that is if big teams get caught up in early wrecks, they don't get paid even though they were there to race.
