Couldn't decide which existing thread to drop this into, so I've made a new one. Over the last year and a half, a large joint Europol investigation has been carried out into match fixing in Europe. There's a live news conference on at the moment on the BBC for those that can view it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/21319403 Excerpts so far: Europol's investigation into suspected match-fixing has revealed that a Champions League match played in England was subject to suspected fixing. Europol's investigation says World Cup and European Championship qualification matches were also fixed. Europol's investigation says criminals wagered 16m euros on rigged matches making a profit of €8.5m. The highest single bribe was €140,000. Director of Europol Rob Wainwright said: "This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe. "Over the last 18 months Europol and five European countries have been running a huge investigation team to look into the concern about widespread matching fixing in European football. "It is clear to use this is the biggest ever investigation into suspected match fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe. "We have uncovered an extensive criminal network. " I'll continue to update this OP as more breaks. e: Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed': quote:A Champions League tie played in England is one of 380 matches across Europe investigators say was fixed...(more at the link provided) "Clear links" found between the criminal organisations involved and the already public Italian match fixing scandal. I think its obvious SAF is behind this. It starts out with a noodle sponsor and quickly escalates to organized crime syndicates

A match being fixed could mean a lot of different things. Could be a ref trying to get over 2 goals or it could be a goalkeeper letting in goals on purpose. Innit.

At least it explains why Barcelona keep being gifted wins they don't deserve in the knockout stages.

Its not as impressive as this http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/...al-south-africa quote:At times bets were placed on matches that did not even happen, such as the notorious ghost game between the Under-21 sides of Turkmenistan and the Maldives when a local 'spotter' employed by bookmakers filed regular dispatches on an entirely fictional encounter.

I've got some mates playing the norwegian 5th division and they are regularly approached (over facebook, e-mail, skype etc) by people under false names offering them cash to fix matches. Not the biggest sums, but these are amateur players who's offered 500-1000 pounds to score own goals, concede penalties or get a red card. Someone has to say yes and go along with it. I think it's a lot bigger than this, and it's just a matter of time until a really big scandal is revealed.

They said in the press conference that the bets were placed with Asian bookies, that offer bets on all sorts of poo poo that European bookmakers don't, so as mentioned the bets could have been on absolutely anything. From the BBC: Europol spokesman says Champions League match fixed in England was played "in past three or four years". Europol spokesman says the "fixed" Champions League match cannot yet be identified because of "ongoing judicial proceedings". Must admit I first thought of Chelsea v Barca as well, it fits the time frame too.

Does the term 'match fixing' imply that it was the actual result that was fixed, or is that just a catch all term for all dodgy gambling related shenanigans?

I think ultimately it's on the bookies to stop offering amateur football or at least put limits on maximum bet sizes. I suppose so far the addicts adding random matches to 'accys' outweigh fixed matches so it stays profitable. But it still constantly blows my mind that if I want to I could bet on 'Avdeling 12' or 'Scottish Premier League'.
