My best moment? I have a lot of good moments but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan. I didn't punch him strong enough. I should have punched him harder.

Couldn't decide which existing thread to drop this into, so I've made a new one.

Over the last year and a half, a large joint Europol investigation has been carried out into match fixing in Europe. There's a live news conference on at the moment on the BBC for those that can view it:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/21319403

Excerpts so far:

Europol's investigation into suspected match-fixing has revealed that a Champions League match played in England was subject to suspected fixing.

Europol's investigation says World Cup and European Championship qualification matches were also fixed.

Europol's investigation says criminals wagered 16m euros on rigged matches making a profit of €8.5m. The highest single bribe was €140,000.

Director of Europol Rob Wainwright said: "This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe.

"Over the last 18 months Europol and five European countries have been running a huge investigation team to look into the concern about widespread matching fixing in European football.

"It is clear to use this is the biggest ever investigation into suspected match fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe.

"We have uncovered an extensive criminal network. "

I'll continue to update this OP as more breaks.

e:

Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed':

A Champions League tie played in England is one of 380 matches across Europe investigators say was fixed...(more at the link provided)

"Clear links" found between the criminal organisations involved and the already public Italian match fixing scandal.

A match being fixed could mean a lot of different things. Could be a ref trying to get over 2 goals or it could be a goalkeeper letting in goals on purpose. Innit.

I instantly thought of the Barcelona - Arsenal match with the ludicrious red card for van Persie, but that was played in the Camp Nou.
Still could be the other CL match they have investigated.

It'll quite clearly be a group game vs some Eastern European team that purposefully lost by 6 goals rather than 4

I'm not saying those dirty poles take all our jobs and bribe money because they're an inferior people or anything like that, but based on the amounts of money mentioned in the OP, it seems like it would have to be a team from a relatively poor country for the bribe to matter to them.

I've got some mates playing the norwegian 5th division and they are regularly approached (over facebook, e-mail, skype etc) by people under false names offering them cash to fix matches. Not the biggest sums, but these are amateur players who's offered 500-1000 pounds to score own goals, concede penalties or get a red card. Someone has to say yes and go along with it. I think it's a lot bigger than this, and it's just a matter of time until a really big scandal is revealed.

They said in the press conference that the bets were placed with Asian bookies, that offer bets on all sorts of poo poo that European bookmakers don't, so as mentioned the bets could have been on absolutely anything.

From the BBC:

Europol spokesman says Champions League match fixed in England was played "in past three or four years".
Europol spokesman says the "fixed" Champions League match cannot yet be identified because of "ongoing judicial proceedings".

Must admit I first thought of Chelsea v Barca as well, it fits the time frame too.

Does the term 'match fixing' imply that it was the actual result that was fixed, or is that just a catch all term for all dodgy gambling related shenanigans?

I think ultimately it's on the bookies to stop offering amateur football or at least put limits on maximum bet sizes. I suppose so far the addicts adding random matches to 'accys' outweigh fixed matches so it stays profitable. But it still constantly blows my mind that if I want to I could bet on 'Avdeling 12' or 'Scottish Premier League'.

The European Union police agency has found evidence of match-fixing of some top international football games.

Europol head Rob Wainwright said it had carried out the biggest-ever investigation into match-fixing in Europe and described the findings as a "big problem for the integrity of European football".

Attempts to fix around 380 professional matches were identified, involving up to 425 match and club officials, players and criminals from more than 15 countries.

These included qualification matches for the World Cup and the European championships, plus two Uefa Champions League matches, one played in England.

Europol said the match-fixing generated £6.9m of betting profits in Germany alone - and there were corrupt payments of at least £1.73m to those involved.

The latter for sure. Obviously since you can bet on anything they would fix things that are less suspicious than the actual score of the match. Like the number of yellow cards and whathaveyou.

I don't mean the amount of the bribe, I mean the returns earned by the fixers:

quote:

In Germany-based matches alone, criminals wagered £13.8m (16m euros) on rigged matches and made £6.9m in profit

50% return on fixed results.
