Hawkwind - one of the originators of space rock.

As good as Hawkwind "proper" is, the best version of Space Ritual is the live Nik Turner solo concert (with Genesis P-Orridge and several other guests).

A lot of my favorite psyche rock (aside from the Bay Area stuff like Black Angels/Brian Jonestown/Warlocks/etc) comes out of Japan.

Ghost started out playing at Buddhist temples in the 80s and have been a consistent force for really awesome poo poo (not to be confused with Japanese visual kei band "Ghost" or lovely American metal band Ghost). Lama Rabi Rabi is probably my favorite record of theirs; here are the first two songs from it:

Acid Mothers Temple have been around nearly as long, but have been much more prolific (and more recently prolific). They're very inspired by a "classic" psyche rock sound and love 20+ minute songs. Here's their entire "Pink Lady Lemonade" suite:

Silver Apples. Duo based around oscillators and drums. They released two albums at the end of the 60s before breaking up. They saw a revival in the 90s and released some material then but it obviously couldn't recapture the 60s material.

I saw the "reunion" tour (which wasn't a reunion since only one of the two original members was there :v: ) in '97 or so and there were literally about ~10 people there. It was still amazing, though, and Simon stayed and talked to us when they were done.

Could you recommend me some albums to check out? They have a pretty long discography. I've been listening to them on and off from youtube for awhile now.

I'd have to go and listen to all their records (well, I don't own literally all of them, but drat close) because they kind of blend together in my head, but a few I know are very good:

- Does the Cosmic Shepherd Dream of Electric Tapirs?
- Electric Heavyland
- Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars
- Dark Side of the Black Moon
- Pink Lady Lemonade
- Son of a Bitches Brew

Really though, I don't think there's any album of theirs that's noticeably worse than any other. They're remarkably consistent that way.

And if you ever get the chance to see them live, holy poo poo do it.

Speaking of, if there ever is another Terrastock, dear God I am dropping everything to get there. I've managed to miss every single one so far, for a variety of reasons.

Just look at these lineups, ye mortals, and despair:

I mean it's literally just about every psyche band you'd ever want to see, all in one place.

Man, I love those guys. One of my bands got to open for them in '05 and they're really cool guys. I bought all their albums on the spot.

The new Black Angels album has been out for a bit now, and I'm not sure it's their best, but it does have some killer tunes on it, like the lead single "Don't Play With Guns":

I also saw that Brian Jonestown Massacre has a new one, but I haven't listened to it yet because they've been so disappointing for the past 7 years or so.

There's also Mercury Rev, the sorta sister band to The Flaming Lips. Jonathan Donahue was in both bands for a while, before completely taking over Mercury Rev and kinda ruining it. Their first two albums are amazing, though. Here's a cool song called "Frittering."

While the first two are good, I wouldn't say he ruined the band immediately - See You On The Other Side is better than Yerself is Steam and Boces put together, and Deserter's Songs was very different but still very good.

If you like the Black Angels you should invest in some Wooden Shjips:

Probably my new favorite new-psyche band and, surprisingly, they're not from California (but they are playing here in a month and I am STOKED).

Liars are amazing, though they're that kind of terrifying spooky psychedelic. They Were Wrong So We Drowned is kind of intense to listen to when very hosed up.

Yes, yes they do.

Also, Moon Duo. Don't know how I missed these guys before, but drat if I haven't been hooked on them lately:
