The CNN person jumped in to try and hype down the destruction. He was talking about the destructive capabilities and she was like "Oh by the way, all this won't happen." just in case some dude just tuned in and was confused.

I laughed at this because I could see Bill Nye thinking "Duh? I thought it didn't need to be said" And picture most everyone watching thinking "OH GOD IT WILL LAND ON US AND WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE"

I was guessing at maybe 10ft wide and half a kilton.

Doing some rough calculations from one of the videos, I'm guessing the airburst was about 4km away. So it might be much bigger than I thought.

Edit: http://www.smh.com.au/world/meteor-...0215-2ei2j.html

Says the airburst happened at 10km altitude.

Your human mentality cries out for vengeance and thrives on the violence you say you can hardly endure.

I heard it was something to do with insurance, like it's really hard to prove who's at fault in an accident without one. It has lead to countless 'we love russia' compilations on youtube so that's definitely a bonus, I think.

Yeah. At some point a sonic boom is big enough that it's better to think of it as an explosive overpressure wave. God drat it would suck to have all your windows blown out in February in central Russia.

Little junk like this is kinda impossible to really guard against. For one thing, they're hard to detect (if this was a 10 ton rock it was only 1-2 meters across). For another, they're really numerous -- something like this hits the earth once a year or so.

Against larger rocks, we're doing a pretty good job. Take a look at this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqC1QjlVUYk

Personally, I'm pretty confident that if anything bigger than 50 meters is headed our way, we'll know about it in advance. The real thing is, predictions will be able to know not just that a rock will impact the earth, but where it will strike. If we find a 75 meter rock in 2014 that's on course to hit the eastern seaboard of the US in 6 months, I think we'll try to do something about it. Likewise Europe. But if it's not going to hit a poor region with low population density, who pays for an intercept mission?

Honestly, the chances that we could do anything about most of them are pretty slim. 2012 DA 14 weighs 190,000 tons, that's a lot of mass to move especially when our largest rocket can only put 9 tons into an interplanetary orbit.

Given enough lead-time though, chaotic effects will tend to predominate so that even a small sub-newton force can make a difference. Stick a couple long-running engines with high specific impulse far enough in advance, and you'd actually be pretty safe.

But with only 6-months notice (probably not even enough time to match the orbit of the asteroid!) we're probably boned.
