I laughed at this because I could see Bill Nye thinking "Duh? I thought it didn't need to be said" And picture most everyone watching thinking "OH GOD IT WILL LAND ON US AND WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE"

I have a feeling the sonic boom did a lot of damage - including the factory that had it's roof cave in. Not that I'm an expert. This really should help increase funding for watching out for this sort of thing, but it won't. Any idea how big it was?

I heard it was something to do with insurance, like it's really hard to prove who's at fault in an accident without one. It has lead to countless 'we love russia' compilations on youtube so that's definitely a bonus, I think.

If you search a bit you'll find videos of people who are intentionally walking in to the street or jumping out behind cars to get hit so they can sue. There are some pretty fun compilations of people being caught redhanded.

Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqC1QjlVUYk Personally, I'm pretty confident that if anything bigger than 50 meters is headed our way, we'll know about it in advance. The real thing is, predictions will be able to know not just that a rock will impact the earth, but where it will strike. If we find a 75 meter rock in 2014 that's on course to hit the eastern seaboard of the US in 6 months, I think we'll try to do something about it. Likewise Europe. But if it's not going to hit a poor region with low population density, who pays for an intercept mission?

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but you can stream the asteroid flyby live on this nasa feed... you can see it already! http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2 It's supposed to be closest at 2:15, I'm curious how much larger it will look in this feed by then (if at all).

Honestly, the chances that we could do anything about most of them are pretty slim. 2012 DA 14 weighs 190,000 tons, that's a lot of mass to move especially when our largest rocket can only put 9 tons into an interplanetary orbit.

Given enough lead-time though, chaotic effects will tend to predominate so that even a small sub-newton force can make a difference. Stick a couple long-running engines with high specific impulse far enough in advance, and you'd actually be pretty safe. But with only 6-months notice (probably not even enough time to match the orbit of the asteroid!) we're probably boned. ComradeCosmobot fucked around with this message at Feb 15, 2013 around 18:44 |
