HP's Fried Chicken! Crafted with Love!

The land of Britain, 485 years after the birth of the Lord.

Just last year, King Uther of Logres led a large army against the Saxons in Malahaut, and on the slopes of Mt. Damen smashed one of their armies away, but at great cost to the nobility of Britain. Many good knights were slain, and so the lords of Britain have had to knight many young men to try and replenish the ranks of knighthood. With the daily arrival in Britain of hundreds more Saxons from their barbarous home, strong sword-arms and canny minds will be needed to defend the country.

It is early spring, and the snows have melted from the roads, allowing men to travel to and from home again. You have all been summoned to Sarum, seat of Earl Roderick's court, to report to the Earl about your first winter as enfeoffed lords. Gathering at Allington-on-Bourne, home of the famously generous Sir Augustine, you are now preparing yourselves for the last half-day's ride to Sarum. A slightly chill wind blows through the courtyard of the motte-and-bailey fortifications as you grab the last few things you need for the journey.

Welcome to Pendragon! As the above says, you're all hanging out at Sir Augustine's place, even if your manor is on the other side of Sarum. If you want to start heading straight for Sarum, or if you want to make sure you've got all you need for some time at the Earl's court, either's fine, but you don't want to waste too much time, the Earl's expecting you!

For simplicity's sake, my GMing will be bolded, and OOC will be italicized. When we get to moments where you think you should roll, tell me what skill, trait, or passion you're using and the base level, along with any bonuses or maluses you see.
E.g. "I'll attack the Saxon footman with my Spear. 15 to start with +5 for being horsed vs. a foot opponent."

And thanks Beer for reminding me - post your finished character sheet in your first post.

Recruitment thread here.

Sir Augustine de Allington-on-Bourne

The massive knight beams with delight at the opportunity to engage his fellow knights with the hospitality that is the custom of the land. A hearty meal is set out while servants attend to the needs of his guests' horses and retinues. Great care is taking by Roderick, Augustine's steward, to ensure that everything is in its place and properly prepared for the upcoming journey. Not for the first time Augustine muses what would happen to the dear man should he find a wife; regardless of the steward's skill it would be supremely insulting for the Lady of the house to not be in charge. He dashes the thought away and resumes entertaining his guests. Though neither musically inclined nor exceptional at the skills of the court, the giant makes up for it in good cheer and confident words. A final meal is set out before the knights depart.

He raises his glass in a toast. "My dear friends I thank you once again for permitting me to share my hospitality. I know all of you have troubled great distances, especially Sir Gerin and Sir Morien." The room chuckles at the mention of Augustine's neighbors. "I know we're all excited at the prospect of serving the Earl and Salisbury. Times have been tough, and in our duty we shall ensure the safety of our lands and kin while bringing glory to ourselves and families. To Glory!"

Sir Augustine raises his glass and salutes his fellow knights. Satisfied that he has served his duty as host, he sits and beckons his guests to eat.

It's a pleasure to meet all of you. Especially in such a fine settin' as this. Just need us some music an' a brawl an' we'll be set.

Sir Philip de Thame

Philip is restless with excitement. An entire lifetime spent in study and training, and finally the time had come to put education into practice. He grins openly at his peers, letting the genuine emotion go to good use. Sitting here among those he will call brother, the ambitious young knight feels contentment. This eve they will drink and make merry, and on the morrow they would start down the path to fortune and glory. It was a good beginning, as though Christ himself were blessing their work.

Feeling suddenly inspired, he follows the giant host's toast with an enthusiastic cheer. Once the response dies down, he stands to address the room himself, "Fellows, I feel I speak for all when I say that truly Sir Augustine is as great in generosity as he is in body. We can but hope that our liege offers such fine hospitality." He pauses momentarily to let the small joke play out. "All jesting aside though, we have worked hard and proved our valor many times over. None can dispute our skill and nobility, but on the morrow we will have our first chance to prove much more. Not only that we are good and virtuous knights, but that we are men of learning and culture. Men capable of bringing honor to our lords and ourselves. Men that will cleave deep into our hated enemies. Men who will be remembered. So this night let us enjoy Sir Augustine's food and wine, for in the morn we go to make our destiny."

Morien

"To our host!", Morien says, raising his glass in response. "May we always be so lucky to have hosts as generous as him. And to all of us! May we always be friends and companions." He looks around, at his new peers and rivals. These would be the people he would have to deal with, professionally, for the rest of their lives. Some, like Augustine and Gerin, he knew well, others, like Julian and Twdr, he knew hardly at all. But, that would undoubtedly change, as he discovered who he could trust, who he couldn't; who he'd grow to like, who he'd grow to hate.

Then, helping himself to some turnips, asks, "So, does anyone have any idea what to expect at the Earl's court?" He had had little experience at the Earl's court, being of a family too poor to regularly stay at attendance at Salisbury. Hopefully one of them would know better. It wouldn't do to be thought of as a fool at the first opportunity.

"Not to worry Sir Morien," Philip replies to the question of expectations. "Court is a field I have studied well for."

He spears a chunk of roast boar with his knife before continuing, "We'll have you dining at the Earl's table before you know it. Just keep me in mind when you're given your own barony!"

Sir Augustine

Augustine laughs at the exchange as he tears away the thick leg of a game bird and takes a hearty bite out of it. "I dare say Philip that I wonder if there is a subject out there that you haven't studied. I could certainly learn a lesson or two. And dear Morien I wouldn't fret too much about court. Just make sure your lute comes with you and you'll be the center of attention by the third pluck. Me, I'm looking forward to the fields of battle. Nothing like a good fight to warm up the soul after a long, cold winter."

Philip de Thame

"Alas, one has only so much time to give," Philip says in mock distress. "I admit that I do at times envy your own talents. In a hunt I fear I'd be more likely to pierce the Earl's backside than our quarry." Seizing on the joke, he leaps to his feet. The long knife gripped like a broadsword, he takes up a fighting pose. "Then I shall be forced to go to war with naught but a dagger for my sword, and an rear end for my steed. I may die of shame before our enemy even has chance to run me through."

Viscardus

Thus equipped by fortune, physique, and character, he was naturally indomitable, and subordinate to no one in the world.

Sir Julian Ravennus

Julian chuckles at Philip's joke. "I have no doubt you would acquit yourself well even with nothing but a dagger, Sir Philip." He doesn't know any of his fellows very well yet, but he's already confident they'll be fast friends.

HP's Fried Chicken! Crafted with Love!

The feast is merry, as the young knights tell tales of what they'll do at Court, or how they expect to slay Saxons with each swing of their arms. Each of them humors the pretensions of the others - it's all in good fun!

The next day, early with the rising of the sun, your band prepares for the last ride to Sarum. Hoping to make a good impression when you enter the town, you armor yourselves in your gleaming chainmail, the best you could get. It doesn't hurt that should you encounter anything unexpected it might help you in a fight. These are not settled times, and even well-policed areas might hold hidden enemies waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting brave. But Sarum awaits your arrival!

Who wants to lead the group along the road? Hunting or Awareness might keep you abreast of what you're walking in to.

Also, just so everyone knows, I'm hoping for a somewhat decent pace at first, just so the game doesn't peter out. I'm going to reward consistent & speedy posters with bonus points and glory!

Sometimes you reach a stalemate. Sometimes you get magic horses.

Sir Twdr

Sir Twdr stayed comparatively silent to the rest of his peers, a bit pale-faced and obviously unwilling to gloat or even speak in case of a misstep in his words. As the young knights gather to the road he seems to relax and become less tense, his life breathing back into him as he is distanced from the dinner table. "We'll make it there swiftly enough. I will watch our route and navigate there if it would not displease any of you. And if it would- Well..." He discontinues, and offers a hand outward towards the open road like a host holding a door open for a guest.

Commoners posted:

Sir Twdr de Baverstock

Sir Twdr (Tiddor) spent his time as a squire serving his father, a man who he loved as much as he admired, and after years of tutelage he had every skill passed down to him except for the one that he admired his father most for- The song that he played. The man was able to play a pan flute from morning to evening without interruption, and those that listened to him admired him as well for this talent. The young Twdr was able to sing well, but not with the same passion and power as his father was able to play. After his father was killed on Mount Damon he became maddened for a short time, and the song left his memory for good. He blames the Saxons not only for the loss of his father, but also his most important memory of his father.

Speaking with several of his father's still living, old compatriots told him only stories of his brave charge that cut a swathe through the men at Eburacum that allowed them to escape, or how his final charge up Mount Damon left him dying with his pan flute in one hand and dagger in the other-

And Twdr's heart broke at that moment. He knew full well that the Saxons had used their dark magic to steal that song not only from his dying father, but from those who had heard it before. It was such a beautiful song that even their shriveled, toxic hearts had fallen in love with it.

He has since kept stewardship over his father's old tromping grounds in the woods, being neither courtly nor all too appreciated by the church for his borderline blasphemes. Those who are pious or demand true knightly refinement may be disappointed by the honest-to-bluntness, hotheaded, and socially roughshod knight, but few are as capable as he at traversing the many dangers of the deep woods. His quest, after all, has taken him to try to find the ephemeral, dangerous fae, and he hopes that with the powers from these creatures he may take back his father's song and find his own in the process.

Augustine

Augustine's eyes carefully examine the various supplies that his household provides his guests. Every servant knows how particular their liege is about leaving nothing overlooked and by now they've accepted it as second nature. Satisfied that his reputation for hospitality does not risk being tarnished he mounts his rouncy and nods to Perin. The young squire pulls himself away from the gaggle of comely young ladies who have surrounded him and kisses them goodbye. Augustine harrumphs at the youth. "If you spent half as much time working with your sword as you did flirting with those lasses no man could stand before you. For Heaven's sake lad when I was your age I could hold my own against a full grown knight." Perin smirks and stares up at the titanic knight. "Oh I get plenty of practice with my sword, good Sir. And I would argue that, when you were my age, a full grown knight would barely reach your chin." Augustine lets out a huge belly laugh that scares some of the smaller children.

He nods at Sir Twdr. The oddly reticent knight was far more talkative now that they were in an informal setting. "Though you are an accomplished huntsmen and keen of eye, this is my land and as your host I feel responsible for your safety. I beg of you, permit me this last bit of hospitality."

HP's Fried Chicken! Crafted with Love!

With the assent of the assembled knights, Sir Augustine takes the lead on the track towards the main road to Sarum. In the early morning air, wisps of gray mist coil around the tall trees as the sun begins to burn them away. The rouncies the knights ride plod rhythmically on the beaten track.

Approaching the limit of his manor-lands, Sir Augustine notices some figures in the distance -- a horse and rider surrounded by a group of walking men. Feeling something is out of place he takes a moment and squints his eyes. The morning sun glistens on several spear-points above the walkers. The rider is somewhat slumped in the saddle, and the group is heading towards a forested, hilly area away from the road. The conclusion hits Sir Augustine - bandits with a captive! Will the knights stand for this flagrant breach of the peace?

Beer succeeds on his Awareness check with a roll of 5, and you can tell there can't be too many more bandits than there are knights. Each of you needs to tell me if 1) you'll attack, 2) if you'll do a lance charge, and 3) what weapon you might use after that.

Also, to clarify my expectations, I'm hoping to keep a 24 hour update cycle, so if we get to places where not everyone needs to input their character's opinion, I might speed it up. If you think I'm going too fast or not giving you enough time to post well, please let me know. I just want to make sure this doesn't die from slow-going.

Augustine

"Bandits dare encroach upon my land and in my very presence? This insult must not stand! Knights! To arms! Run them down and surround them so there is no escape!"

Unsheathing his sword Augustine drives his rouncy towards the bandits. He barks out orders, guiding the assault with fury and intellect.

Augustine will use Battle 15 to coordinate the attack while attacking with Sword 20 (15 + 5 for higher ground). Damage is 6d6. I am assuming that getting our lances would prove difficult since I doubt we would be carrying them.

Morien sees the others dismount, but doesn't fully understand it. The knight's great advantage is his horse. It makes him faster, lets him lend his horse's superior strength to his blow, and elevates him and makes him harder to hit. Oh, there are times to fight dismounted, of course; over uneven ground, for instance, or in close quarters. But otherwise, no. He raises his lance, and clicking his teeth, sends his horse into motion.

HP's Fried Chicken! Crafted with Love!

The knights spring into action. Sir Augustine rides swiftly to cut off the bandits retreat, and Sir Julian, followed by Sirs Twdr, Gerin, and Philip on foot, close the circle. As the knights approach they can see that the man on horse is a knight of good station, carrying what looks like a container for a written message, and barely conscious -- he is bleeding from various wounds, seen and unseen. At Sir Julian's request, the men, outnumbering the knights by two, laugh rowdily in their heavily padded leather and cloth armor, their small shields covering their chests. "We beat yon knight to a pulp," the largest man yells, and you can see he wears some better equipment than his underlings, "and you whelps would do well to run off and get his ransom, lest you feel our spears in your guts!" He laughs, and the insult is too much for Sir Morien, who charges into the group with his lance lowered. The lance spears through one of the bandits completely, slaying the man in one blow! It is the signal to begin the fight!

Sir Augustine rides into the fray and strikes another bandit, who stands gawping as the body of his fellow villain flies through the air. The sword cuts deep into the man's shoulder, and blood gushes forth from the wound. The man throws his spear away, and begs for mercy.

On foot as he is, Sir Philip has no height advantage against the bandit in front of him. But after knocking aside the bandit's sloppy spear thrust, Philip stabs the man in the gut, and can see the dawning realization in the man's eyes that he might die now. Philip pulls the sword out, and the man slumps to the ground, clutching tightly at his stomach.

Sir Gerin swings wildly at his opponent, but is unable to land a blow on his opponent. The bandit waits until Sir Gerin pauses, and jams the spear at Sir Gerin's body. His shield and armor prevent any harm from that blow, but it rattles him mightily, and only by luck he stays on his feet.

Sir Julian easily parries the slow strike made by the bandit facing him, and just as easily attacks the man. His sword cleaves into the bandit's helmet, denting the thin metal with the strength of the blow, and knocking the poor man out.

Some would wonder why a man who hates Saxons as Twdr does would wield a weapon so emblematic of them. If they saw him now, though, they might get an inkling as to why. Twdr deftly dodges a few terrified pokes, and brings his hefty axe down on the bandit's hand grasping the spear haft, cutting it off in a single blow. The man screams and clutches his bleeding hand to his chest, too busy trying to stop the bleeding to fight anymore.

In just a few moments, the big bandit has seen most of his group brought low. He yells, and attacks Sir Augustine as the third bandit goes after Sir Morien.
Sir Gerin and his opponent circle each other, until the bandit opens himself up to the knight's attack. Sir Gerin's blade cuts a deep and long gash across the chest of the bandit, who falls back and cries "Hold!"

Sir Morien is lucky when a wild thrust from the man attacking him narrowly misses plunging upwards beneath his chainmail into his pelvis, and instead the spearhead is caught on the saddle. Sir Morien swings his lance in a wide arc and cracks the man in his ribs with the shaft of the weapon. A wet crack is heard from inside the bandit's body as the man falls down several feet away.

Sir Augustine and the bandit leader face off as the other knights watch. It is honorable to let Sir Augustine face his opponent one on one, and they want to see how the Bear will fare against the villain. The first blow is struck by the bandit, but Augustine is quick to bring up his shield, and the blow is harmlessly deflected, Augustine's huge frame not even moving from the force. Sir Augustine pays the man back with interest, his sword reaching out and carving a bloody line across the bandit's face, narrowly missing the man's artery and his near-instant death. The large man falls to the bloody grass, moaning as he tries to keep his bloody cheek together. It is clear the fight is over, and the young knights are victorious with nary a scratch on them! You can hear your squires cheer your victory behind you on the road.

The sound of battle seems to have awoken the captured knight from his daze, and you can see him try to speak. Getting close, you can hear him say "Sarum." But options are presented to you now - do you aid him, and if so how? Earl Roderick would also be happy to give judgment on bandits preying on his roads, as well.

Sir Morien did 30 damage to the bandit with a critical strike, and so his lance is unbroken, and he gets a check to Spear Expertise. Sirs Augustine, Julian, Twdr, and Philip brought their men down with Major Wounds. Sir Gerin took a 12 point blow, and rolled a 15 on his DEX check vs. knockdown. In the second round, Major wounds took down the last of the bandits. Everyone gets 5 glory for each bandit personally defeated, and an extra 10 for doing so completely unscathed.

There's a post in the OOC thread about how I handled the fight, please check it out here and let me know what you think.

Augustine

Augustine's choler is tempered by the victory, and he immediately attends to the wounded knight on horseback. "Squires! Bind these brigands and ensure they are prepared to receive the Earl's justice. Take no chances with them in their injured state; their comfort is irrelevant. The executioner's axe awaits."

As the squires bind the bandits Augustine personally attends to the wounds of the injured knight. Though by no means a master healer, the giant is familiar with the wounds the man has received and applies the proper bandages and poultices. With the task completed Augustine speaks. "Your wounds are staunched and we are on our way to Sarum. I am Sir Augustine of Arrington, you tread upon my land. With me are Sir Philip, Sir Morien, Sir Twdr, Sir Julian, and Sir Gerin. Might I have the honor of your name, and does your task require haste?"

"He is in no shape to ride," Philip says quickly. "Lash him down to this, and have a pair of the less injured prisoners carry him. God willing he will be restored to health by the time we reach the Earl."

Sir Augustine is quick to tend to the wounded knight, cutting the cords binding his arms and as painlessly as he can removing the man's armor. Under the mail and leather is a map of deep bruises and rivulets of wet and dry blood. Augustine gives the man water then tends & binds the worst of the injuries. Sir Julian does much the same to the wounded bandits, quietly and tightly wrapping their bleeding bodies in strips of their own torn armor. At Sir Philip's instruction an impromptu cart is set up for those bandits unable to walk, pulled by their despondent comrades. They fear the Earl's justice, but maybe there might be lenience?

The water gives life back to the knight, who quickly recognizes he is free from his captors. When Sir Augustine gives the man his and the others' names, the knight smiles and painfully sits up. You can see he is not much older than the rest of you, with sharp eyes (though one is surrounded by a black ring) and the beginnings of a thick brown beard on his chin.

"I thank you, good knights, for your courage and your help. I am Sir Dyffed of Oxford, and I come from King Uther's court with a message for the Earl Roderick, when I was waylaid by these scoundrels. I was a fool, and thought to take them single-handedly, but they surrounded me and beat me senseless. My task requires some degree of swiftness, but with your aid I should be able to ride again." With Sir Gerin's hand Sir Dyffed gets to his feet stiffly and rubs his wrists. He quickly checks the cylindrical message package still on the horse, and sighs with relief to see what he wanted to.

Sir Dyffed looks like he's up to some riding now, but the bandits will probably keep you at a sedate pace.

Sir Augustine

The tall knight nods as Dyffed speaks. "I know not of your needs, but should your task require a pace faster than a wounded brigand call walk we shall accommodate it. Sir Twdr shall lead us to Sarum, as per our agreement. As we are still on my land these wastrels are my responsibility." Augustine maneuvers his horse over to assembled mass of pathetic bandits. As he passes Sir Julian and Sir Philip he nods his thanks for their quick thinking in ensuring justice is served.

Hand casually placed on the hilt of his sword, Augustine addresses the prisoners. He is the embodiment of intimidation. "Fleeing would be the height of folly and only compound your guilt before the Earl's eyes. I shall take it... personally should you choose to run." He then nods to the others, ready to proceed.

Morien

Morien heads over to Augustine. "Sir Dyffed is injured, and should not go on his journey alone. There might be more danger on the road. At the same time, he bears a message from the High King, so his mission is urgent, not one to be delayed by these bandits. Little though I like it, it might be wise for us to separate, with half of us going with Sir Dyffed, and the other half following with the bandits.

Augustine

Augustine nods politely to Morien. "Hence me asking the question of Sir Dyffed. Should his task require haste we shall either split the group or place the brigands on the cart and have a horse pull them. Should his task require more haste than that then, as they are my responsibility, I shall stay with the bandits and five of you may serve as Sir Dyffed's honor guard. The needs of the realm come before personal glory and these criminals shall see justice."

Sir Dyffed stays the knights. "Nay, nay, my meaning was rough, and my words addled, please forgive me. I should not ride swift, lest my wounds re-open and make your work for naught. It is no harm to my task to bring these bandits in tow with us to Sarum, where I may deliver my message, and you may deliver these miscreants to the Earl. Let us ride, and we might converse -- It would please me greatly to know more about my rescuers."

Also, at this moment Uther is still only King of Logres, *not* High King of all Britain, a fact which miiiight just rankle the man a bit

It's a pleasure to meet all of you. Especially in such a fine settin' as this. Just need us some music an' a brawl an' we'll be set.

Philip

"Please forgive my companions Sir," Philip says with a slight bow of the head. "We are but newly knighted, and little training was spared for the niceties of court. Allow me to introduce my fellows. Sir Morien the Just, Sir Julian of Rome, Sir Gerin the Bold, and Sir Twdr Saxonsbane." Philip indicates each man as they are named. "You have of course already met our giant friend Sir Augustine, and I am Sir Philip. It is our good fortune to be heading the same direction. We make for Sarum to present ourselves before the Earl."

Having finished, he offers a short bow. With the formalities handled and their guest in relatively good health, a bit of Philip's mirth returns. "I do hope this incident has not overly soured you on our home," he says. "Normally the local hospitality is of a much gentler nature."

Gerin

Gerin breathing heavily from his encounter with the bandits turns to the wounded Knight and says, "Indeed Sirrah, I hope you will forgive my churlish ways, Also I hope thee does not take these mangy curs as a slur on Sailsbury's hospitality." Gerin turns and glares at the nearest bandit "needless to say such as these will receive the reward they deserve for their actions when we reach the earls court"

Sometimes you reach a stalemate. Sometimes you get magic horses.

Sir Twdr

Twdr pointedly remarks, "These men will likely face death. It is nothing to call a reward, Sir Gerin. Especially for attacking a knight acting as a messenger from the King." His squire walks his horse over to the smaller knight, who resaddles himself. "With our number I doubt we will have much else to worry about unless these men take too long to walk. Then tardiness will be our greatest problem."
