We have a 17 year old cat with cataracts who has gotten to the point of being effectively blind. She's adjusting, although she can get really nasty because she gets disoriented and upset, poor thing. We tried marking varying obstacles with a dot of clove or peppermint oil (depending on the area), and it really helps her when we first do it and we notice she is a LOT calmer because the scent helps her orient herself. The problem is that it doesn't last very long--even renewing the dots once a week doesn't seem to be quite enough I was looking around for scents that might be longer-lasting and spotted these Tracerz. Has anyone ever used them? Do they work well?

I think these are essentially little blobs of scented candles, but they're quite convenient and not too awfully expensive. If your cat is already orienting by smell, I can't imagine why this wouldn't work.

Aww, I love hearing about other people with blind pets! We haven't done any scents since the first week after we adopted our dog because he licked them off.

Thanks, I'll give them a try and let everyone know if they were any good.

We have a blind cat that was a rescue. She was found as a kitten (under six months) and had a nasty infection which made her blind in one eye, the other had to be removed soon after due to complications. Two years later she has adjusted fine without any help. My understanding from others who have blind cats who were born blind, gradually became blind over time or had issues like our Lotus is they compensate with their hearing and smell senses. Lotus for example has her attuned her hearing to the point where I can be ten feet away, make hand movements in a circle etc with minimal movement and she follows my hand. And I mean intentionally moving my hand in a way to lower the chance of her hearing anything at all. She is shy, very skittish but a sweetheart.. I wish she was not blind but then again we would never have come across her at the adoption center if she was not blind. What catamar said is what we did to our house to provide different, unique surfaces where she could get accustomed to and know where she is. For example we have an electric water fountain where she drinks, the food is nearby of course and the potty is in the same area so she knows where all are. The cat beds are near the transition from carpet to tile, next to a wall so she knows that as well. Our other cat box is behind a pet gate that she knows once she passes through is immediately next to it. Little things she is familiar with in other words. When we pick her up to pet her, we always put her down in a familiar pet bed so she knows where she is at.
