This post will likely be evolving, so stay tuned!

A trivia contest you say?!

Let's get prepared again for TRIVIA, goons! We're back in action April 19, 20, and 21!

For those with archives...
Trivia 42's thread
Trivia 43's thread

What the crap do you want us to do?

Last year we very nearly broke the top 10. This is now our goal, which should be described as an inhuman feat for a team that doesn't stalk Oz or obsess over crap like special edition cereal boxes and candy wrappers.

Info from previous years posted:

Tell Me More!
For the last 42 43... 44!! years Steven's Point, WI college radio station 90FM has run the world's largest trivia contest. There are ~500 teams from around the world who compete. The entire town is taken over by trivia contestants.

These are the canonical rules, but here's a brief overview.

  • Game runs for 54 hours straight
  • Approximately 8 questions every hour. They read a question, play a song, re-read it, play another song. You have until the end of the second song to get your answer in. You're competing to get a correct answer and to get the answer in on time.

Imagine a couple thousand trivia nerds hitting redial for 54 hours straight. Yeah.

Things you should know:
  • The questions are designed to be Google-proof, but that's not always possible. They want to make you at least work to get the answers.
  • Scoring: The fewer people that answer correctly, the more valuable the question is and so those people get awarded more points.
  • You can do anything to get the answer.
  • Someone needs to dethrone The Network and Dad's Computers

What TEAM GOONS needs from you!

Here's a list of things we need:
  • On the ground Goons: We had a group of goons in previous years that ran the On the Ground stuff for us in Stevens Point, and we're looking for more this year. Your primary tasks will be Running Questions, The Trivia Stone Rally Drive, and getting alcohol poisoning. Also you get to eat the free food if we win that again.
  • IRC. We have a channel on synirc #tp
  • Mumble We stream the audio for everyone over Mumble.
  • Recording the stream for review is essential. There are music questions where they play a 20 second clip of like 8 different songs. You have to try to get them all right. You are given a long time to answer, but if you only hear it once and don't have a recording you're missing out on big points. Being able to edit the clip and analyze it is invaluable.
  • Data Entry Goons: Someone to transcribe the questions to text for people on IRC
  • Non-Americans are welcome: Goons from around the world. They've had questions that Americans won't get. Pop culture or things in other countries could be on the list. Hey, it's 54 hours long... I'm not staying awake that entire weekend.
  • Media whores. You have every season of Hogan's Heroes, M*A*S*H* and other random TV shows? Yeah, we might need you to help us figure out what color socks someone is wearing or some other bullshit question.
  • Music nerds: Example question given by a coworker (accuracy not guaranteed)

"In the Huey Lewis and the News vinyl's included artwork there is a neon sign on the wall. What does it say?"

  • Brains: Small panel of decision makers. We need some people to be the go-to about whether or not we submit an answer. A voting panel, per se.
  • Phones: Ability to call. We're on the internet. Get out your SIPs, your Skypes, and your cell phones -- we'll need everything you got to get our answers submitted.

Note, only one person can call the answer in for the team. Multiple offenses result in disqualification.

Official website (Don't be shocked at how bad this is)

Sooo... are you ready to play Trivia, Fast Eddie?

IRC irc.synirc.net #tp
Mumble Server: mumble.feld.me Port: 64739
edit: note, there's a NINER at the end of the port number

Our official team name this year is Trivial Fursuit: Tokyo Yiff'd

Athanatos posted:

Little IRC help if anyone needs it. We use +v (Voice) to designate that you are a goon.

Edit: Dont let all this stuff under this message stop you from joining. If you dont do it you can still play trivia, the minimum you have to do is click that link. That's it. The other stuff is just extra for admin stuff.

This link should take you where you need to go: http://client00.chat.mibbit.com/#tp@irc.synirc.net

That link should take you to this.

Enter what ever name you want (Your SA name works fine), hit go and wait. It will take you to the chatroom. You should see people talking, and the Topic with information in it.

Down at the bottom where you can type stuff type this in:

Use any password you want, and an email you can check. (DO NOT USE YOUR SA PASSWORD)
/ns register <PASSWORD> <EMAIL>

This should pop up so head over to your email:

You'll get an email like this:

Copy that command, and paste it into the chat

If you did it right you will get this:

Once you get that far send me (or another one of the OPs) a message:

Now up at the top of the screen you can see your private messages to people:

If I am around I'll tell you to rejoin the channel. At the top part of the screen you can click the x near the #tp tab then type /rejoin #tp. OR you can totally close the mibbit tab and restart it. At this point you are registered and good to go.

If you have done all this and ever find yourself without +v in the channel type:

That will log you into IRC and autovoice you. As always if you have any questions ask in the channel, everyone is helpful. You can message me anytime and if I am around I'll do my best to help.

We still have pictures to identify before the actual trivia starts, so hop in and see if you recognize something.

If you know what you are doing the server is irc.synirc.net and the channel is #tp

The internet radio stream will often lag behind... it might even skew up to an entire minute behind real-time. This is the problem with that method as you don't hear the question soon enough and don't know accurately when the cutoff is for calling in answers.

Our private radio stream broadcasted to Mumble is very low latency and the reason why we rely on it during the contest.

The theme this year is Looney Tunes which means we have an exhaustive amount of source material to slog through. There will be one hour minimum dedicated to the theme.

Our most pressing need is for off-hour question transcriptions. We had someone (herpity, I think) who just absolutely slayed, but needs to sleep sometimes. IIRC we had some hiccups during those times. This is a harder task than it sounds.

*A Trivia Question Timeline*

Question is read over the radio.
In Episode 4 of Two Broke Girls, what toppings does the big boobed one put on the 3rd cupcake.
The announcer has the biggest mush mouth ever.
You hear: In epi-- fer of toobrokegirl what is the -f---sa cupcake top---vw-
Herpity somehow has the question already typed fully into irc about 1/10th of a second later
You start googling. IMDB, script searcher, youtube, bing, yahoo, fan boards, the TVIV thread
You cant find poo poo
Some song is playing, you wonder how long is this song
Hey it's pretty good song
You sing a bar
oh poo poo this is trivia I gotta find this thing
Click back to IRC, links posted people searching things
Lots of guesses
Wait I know the 2 Broke Girls fan myspace page*
Song is over, question being read again, next song starts
myspace page cache loads, it's somewhere in a block of text about the show 60000 words long
ctrl+f cupcake
Hey THIS song is good too, how do they choose these?!
oh poo poo right not much time
Hey there it is...Bacon
Click back to IRC
Spam Bacon 30 times because you are pumped.
4 other people spamming bacon
Someone confirms Bacon
Rawillkill lets the phone bank know to Call Bacon
5 people try to call in
busy
Time running out, 2nd song almost over
bust signal
busy signal
loving Pick UP
busy signal
Goon gets through
You hope every other caller sees and hangs up
Dont double answer ohhh fuckk...come on
Answer in.
Song Ends.
Mush Mouth calls phones down.
Answer: BACON
IRC explodes excitement
That was pretty easy to find probably not very many points
oh poo poo they are reading the next question no time to rest

*Repeat that non-stop all weekend*

At best it's a question we find fast and get the 2nd song to relax, piss, grab a drink. At worst we have an answer and cant get it called in time.

Trivia is loving great.

*Yes, we found an answer on a cached geocities or myspace page one time

Here is the Spotify link to most the songs they played last year: http://open.spotify.com/user/athana...HY7hDAynv1ayvXo

If you want to contest an answer.

Sometimes there can be multiple right answers or whoever wrote the question (Oz) got the answer wrong. If you want to call it out, you gotta have sources.

Thankfully when this happens one of the other teams goes and proves Oz wrong and we don't have to worry about this much, the end result of this is the question gets thrown out usually.

It would be highly unlikely we are the only team that would want to contest an answer.

You're drat right we have an archive of questions. Ask in the irc channel. Oz is a sperg and claims copyright or some poo poo on his questions so posting them publicly can get you shamed or even DQ'd.

Please remember we shouldn't post the questions or the trivia pictures in a public forum!
