Looking through this thread and seeing names/avvies from last year that I never see anywhere else in the forums, who all have the SAME ENTHUSIASM for the contest that I do, brings the biggest smile to my face. gently caress, I love trivia. Do you suck at trivia? Join anyway! If nothing else, we've turned our contest into the best internet party around. The music, the questions, the rush, the panic, the mushmouths, it's just so perfect. There is Nothing Else Like It. In two years, I've directly contributed the answer for 1 question and a whopping 10 points, but god drat if I didn't feel like a boss when I did it. Even if I never answer another question again, I'm on board forever. Now, who wants to ship me some Portessi? OH, and if people are interested, I'll probably run some group-watches in the coming weeks. Shoot me a PM here or hit me up on IRC and we'll figure out some dates/times. So great to see all of you again!

I didn't notice anything on their website or Facebook pages that says Looney Tunes, other than the image of the guy in the Mayan headdress. Did they announce it on the air or something? I ask because last year everyone was totally positive that the theme was True Grit based on all the hints on the website, and it turned out to be 3 Godfathers instead.

They do a radiothon/auction in December in which they announce the theme. edit: The mystery movie is shown locally in Pointe, and is either announced that day or a couple days before (jackrabbitstorm, help a brother out). First off, I'm really excited for this and can't wait to put my research skills to work. Second, if the movie ends up being Space Jam I can answer any question about it, I've seen that movie probably 200 times. It was the only thing I watched for about half a year after I got it on vhs in the 90s.

supercow posted:Is the trivia based on movies/tv shows/music that kind of stuff? I'm a pretty big sports/science guy but I know gently caress all about pop culture. It is mostly pop culture but there are definitely sports questions. Science, math, and history questions? Not so much. Someone with current access to the wiki could maybe give you category percentages (no idea if this has even been done but).

I have all 6 volumes of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection box sets, and I'm a trivia fiend (at least for pop culture & history), but I've never used IRC. Should I just bite the bullet and figure out how to use the drat thing, or is there a non-IRC alternative?

Unfortunately, I don't see 2012 categorized with type-related breakdowns as a percentage I could easily relay. It's only semi-completed on the wiki. I don't know if it's kosher or not but I'll post a round from 2012 until someone yells at me so don't quote this. This was hour 10 and we only got 50% of them right. If you want to know what it's like during the contest, try to find an answer in 8 minutes or less. Ideally before the first song is complete so other people can verify and debate the answer. It goes by very quick sometimes. Unfortunately, IRC is the main hub for our team. It's easy enough to learn though. One of the main reasons we start the thread so early is so we can make sure everyone is fully equipped to contribute once the time comes. There really is no alternative though. The thread slows way down once the contest starts. Things move so quickly the thread format simply doesn't work.

Feld if you want to add these links to the OP and tell people to try and get IRC set up along the way that might help diffuse the crazy situation of people trying to figure it out the day of trivia. IRC Clients: Windows http://www.mirc.com/ mIRC http://www.silverex.org/news/ xchat2 - an older version of xchat, but it's free http://download.cnet.com/HydraIRC/3...50_4-52677.html Hydra IRC - supposed to be really easy to use, and it's free Windows + Linux http://xchat.org/ Mac http://colloquy.info/ Colloquy The server we are on is: irc.synirc.net For now, we hang out in channel: #tp Everyone should register their username on the server: type "/ns register password email" inputting your pw and email. You should get an email shortly after requiring you to verify. Really easy. Try to make your username the same on IRC as it is on SA so it's easier to verify that you are from the forums. edit: readability

I've never actually heard of this contest before I saw this thread, but I'll try to attend and hopefully I can help with some questions. And mIRC isn't hard to learn, if I could use it to search after PCWs when I was a kid, I'm sure everyone here can learn it. But I did read a few pages ago that they tried to make the questions google-proof, are many of the questions that?
