I have a gigabit fiber connection, prescription methamphetamine's, and a love of trivia that borders on the erotic. In the IRC channel as "Shimajew."

...A trivia contest you say? :robinhood: I like trivia. Is it necessary for us to be on teams in specific or can we just go at this solo for a good bit of fun? I'm sure the answer exists in the archives but as I am poor and Irish (and thus have yet to buy archive browsing powahs), and also a stealth goon who has been grinding away at college for the last couple of years and only recently had any genuine "free time", I'm not entirely sure.

This is pretty impossible to play solo since it's 54 hours long (if you want to hear all the questions anyway). It also costs $$$ to officially enter and play, not to mention that you have to find answers and call them in yourself (if you want to play for real), so I would say you're better off contributing to our collective efforts on Trivial Fursuit Not to mention this is intended as a group happy fun time activity! Come drop by in IRC if you want more information or have any questions

I remember seeing this thread last year when I had just joined. I got all excited and then I had to go to a wedding. But not this year! British Goon reporting for duty! I won't claim to be any good, but I do love trivia. I have Mumble but I don't have an IRC client yet, but will look into it and hopefully figure it out. Is there anything else I need to do to participate?

I think it's important for new players to have a clearer idea of what this is coming in. It's not a game of Pub Trivia like you may be used to. In other words, they're not going to ask a bunch of questions you'll know off the top of your head. Sure, some of them are layups, but 80% of the questions will be about a sign in an episode of Little House on the Prairie, or a full page advertisement that ran in the 1993 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. The fun isn't in being the guy that knows the answer, but being the guy who maybe stumbles upon a clue in the right google search that leads us to the answer that we submit only being 60% sure of, or experiencing the frenzy of 150 goons trying to hunt down leads and communicate information accurately/frantically all while operating on a few hours sleep. And our strength in numbers could be the key to having someone who happens to have that Beach Boys record in his closet and can tell us what color shoes are picture on the inside jacket, or the fourth ingredient in Nabisco's Double Stuf Oreos. Basically, you could be the hot poo poo trivia dude of your neighborhood and it's not going to mean very much on its own in this contest. Join our collective!

I took about an hour to read the spreadsheets of the last two years' questions/answers - not only is the subject matter usually obscure as hell, the ones that aren't are incredibly vaguely worded. I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into now, but I'm glad it's a group effort since even if I can't answer most of the questions, there are others who can.

Is there a good program or app or something that lets you find out quickly how long the song they're playing is? That way we know how much longer we have before OMG CALL IT IN CALL IT IN GOGOGO XXXX XXXX YYYY What I was doing before was starting a timer when the song started, googling the song (or lyrics if I don't know it) then figuring out how much we had left that way but I'm sure there has to be a better way.

This wasn't too much of a problem, our issue with calling it in is actually getting the station to answer the phone, so knowing how much time is left isn't that useful really. That said, I assume Shazam or SoundCloud are your best bet. But we only need this for questions that we're really having a problem with. If the question is extremely difficult and we get it near the end, we probably won't have a problem calling it in cause the lines aren't as jammed.

I have been waiting for this for a year! I remember staying up so late to help out. I think I got to answer maybe one question (because I had read the answer a few days before on Mental Floss...) on my own, but it was still fun. I even got a fun quote on the Wiki quote board. Definitely looking forward to this.

Oh, gently caress yes, I have been waiting for this. I got a question right last year, only a few seconds too late. Hopefully I'll be more helpful this time around. If not, I'll just be drunk and happily watch you guys google the poo poo out of obscure stuff. I'm in Sweden, so at least it's an extra search in the down hours. I just hope my friend decides not to celebrate his birthday so I can do more trivia.
