Stardate 2269.81
Starbase 8

Things are heating up on the borders of the Federation.

A brief Klingon-Romulan alliance caught the insular Romulans up with the rest of the Alpha Quadrant technologically, and yet Starfleet Intelligence has learned that Klingon forces have attacked Romulan at Klach D'Kel Brakt, possibly over a border dispute. Romulan weapons devestated several border outposts just four years ago; there is much fear what they might accomplish with advanced ships.

Next door to the Klingon Empire, the Kzinti have broken out of their enforced pacifism, seeking out a great weapon to destroy their enemies on all sides. Ancient memories are awakened of the first Earth-Kzin war.

And yet, there is hope. First Contact was made with two dozen intelligent species in the last year. Thousands of star systems have been charted, millions of new life forms discovered. The Federation continues to expand, to grow, in peace and prosperity. The looming fears of war do not quench the Federation's thirst for peace. The hawks are in a minority.

It is up to Starfleet to keep this peace. As always, the ultimate responsibility falls to the captains of the thirteen Constitution-class starships who patrol the deepest space so far from home.

This is a game of Star Trek using a Mouse Guard hack I wrote. Recruiting is perpetually open, my time and space considerations permitting.

Time for MISSION ORDERS!

quote:

TO NCC-1371 USS Republic
Captain Samuel DuSable, Commanding

FROM Starfleet Command, Starbase Eight
Vice Admiral Joseph Lance

PROCEED to Station K-14 to project Starfleet presence on the Klingon and Romulan borders. Monitor sensor reports from the Klingon/Romulan border. Under no circumstances are you to intervene in any conflict or alliance between these two powers.

quote:

TO NCC-1719 USS Eagle
Captain Marcia St. Croix, Commanding

FROM Starfleet Command, Starbase Eight
Vice Admiral Joseph Lance

INVESTIGATE reports of possible Kzinti or Klingon raiding of merchant ships in and around the Ardana system, near the Klingon border. Arrest and impound any vessels involved in piracy or other aggressive actions.

quote:

TO NCC-1703 USS Hood
Captain Joshua Wolff, Commanding

FROM Starfleet Command, Starbase Eight
Vice Admiral Joseph Lance

PROCEED at maximum speed to Stelenaris III, outside the Federation border. The governments of this world has requested our assistance in brokering a unified world peace treaty between their balkanized powers. You will host a peace conference on board Hood and assist the peace process in any manner possible.

quote:

TO NCC-1672 USS Exeter
Captain Ulysses Sherman, Commanding Officer

FROM Starfleet Command, Starbase Eight
Vice Admiral Joseph Lance

RESCUE colonists aboard Deep Colony Ship Prometheus. Their vessel has foundered in an ion storm and has less than two weeks of life support left.

quote:

TO NCC-1710 USS Kongo
Captain Alexander Hawkins, Commanding Officer

FROM Starfleet Command, Starbase Eight
Vice Admiral Joseph Lance

TRANSPORT special scientific team and utilize Kongo's advanced scientific equipment to investigate the formation of a possible wormhole in the Xaratine system. Gather as much scientific data as possible, but do not allow harm to come to the scientific team, your ship, or crew.

Now begins the Command Conference. Each of you may confer with your senior officers and the library computer. I am open to background questions, inquiries about the game, your ships, or the situations relevant to your missions. Try to roleplay it out, setting a scene and asking officers questions instead of posing them directly to me. Feel free to invent NPCs, assign personalities, and otherwise take control of the scene and setting. I'm very willing to roll with just about anything you guys find fun.

Once you have finished your command conference, we'll begin each of your individual missions!

Spider-Man's Amazing Construction Company

NCC-1719 USS Eagle
Captain's Log, Stardate 2269.81, Captain Marcia St. Croix reporting

"I have to admit some trepidation, given our orders. Starfleet Intelligence seems uncertain as to who or what might be raiding in the vicinity of the Ardan system - meaning we're almost certain to see combat, and we don't know who it is we'll be fighting. The Command Conference reflected the mission's uncertain nature..."

"Fear not, my friends. When we find these raider puukh, the Atlirith will reduce them to dust." Commander Keval th'Zarath's antennae waved menacingly. Most Andorians can't quite manage to wave their antennae menacingly, as there's not much menacing about them, but Keval was a rare talent. The Eagle - or the Atlirith as she continued to call it, from the time when the vessel had an all-Andorian crew - was a veteran of more than a few border skirmishes, and the vessel's history suited her right down to the bone.

"Your confidence does you credit, Commander, but it would be foolish to fail to address the lack of detailed information available to us." Keval sneered at the speaker, Lieutenant T'Entreia, and it was plainly obvious that a personal distaste - rather than the traditional distrust of Vulcans held by so many Andorians - was bubbling up behind her eyes. "There are preparations I can make if we are sure to be facing Klingons. There are preparations I can make if we are sure to be facing Kzinti. The armament we will face affixed to a Kzinti Police Vessel is vastly different from Klingon equipment, and an inability to adjust our shield harmonics effectively before initiating any combat will be dangerous to us all."

A third voice joined the conversation - thankfully, before th'Zarath could start shouting, as she was so very wont to do. "Not to mention the possibility that we could be dealing with something else entirely." the two nonhuman women turned to face the speaker, both relaxing almost imperceptibly; Doctor Abedowale Sharon had that effect on people. The Chief Medical Officer chuckled faintly, running a mahogany-colored hand over his close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair before adding, "The Torah teaches us that God has made many wonders, and even in this age of starflight we have not cataloged them all." It was a deliberate reference - Keval often had long and thoughtful discussions with the Doctor about his Jewish faith and the ways in which it contrasts with Andorian beliefs. By bringing the subject up, the Doctor hoped to get the Commander into a more thoughtful - and less potentially violent - mode of thought.

I couldn't help but smile, watching my officers. I had been silent since reading out our official orders from the Admiralty - I confess that I added the phrase "fail not in this charge at your peril," which I stole from a book I read about old Earth navies, because I liked the way it sounded. At any rate, I know most Captains prefer a certain degree of decorum in their briefings... but I've always believed that letting arguments and discussions happen naturally, organically, a Captain learns more about his - or her - officers.

Two of those officers, though, had been silent. I expected as much from Lieutenant Carter. Poor Sean! He was always so bloody anxious and unsure of himself. Something of a personal project was my Navigation Officer. Good man under pressure, but... well. He was better than he had been several months prior, when I took command.

I still remember him struggling to try and get the navcomp to work properly. There had been a cross-connection somewhere in the computer system, and unlike the rest of the Eagle's systems, it still displayed in Andorian - and Carter had been so afraid to admit that he couldn't get it to work that he tried teaching himself the language. It's since been fixed, of course - but don't try and tell me anyone willing to work that hard is a liability to the ship, no matter how hard a time he has with astrogation!

I was surprised, though, by the other silent figure, and so I cleared my throat. "Your thoughts, Professor?"

Arthur Macmillan rubbed his chin as the other officers fell silent, narrowing his eyes a touch. "Ardana remains the only known source for Zenite, which is typically important in preventing plant illnesses. I would guess, then, that Kzinti activity is more likely than Klingon, as the Kzinti have a robust agricultural sector and the Klingons despise the idea of eating anything that isn't twitching. That said, many of their planetary activities are... not entirely in line with Federation cultural principles, if memory serves, and so we cannot discount the notion of home-grown problems." The Science Officer was older than anyone else in the room - or on the ship, for that matter - but though his body wasn't as spry as it had once been, his mind was clearly still sharp as a tack. The silver-haired human shrugged as he added, "There's still just too much we don't know, Captain."

"Well then," I declared, "let's work on that. Lieutenant Carter, I want you to prepare a full dossier on Ardana; find me everything you can on it. Tomorrow you'll present your findings to the Command Staff." I ignored the young Lieutenant's look of dismay; he'll have to get used to taking center stage sometime. "Lieutenant T'Entreia, I want you to prepare the ship's systems to handle Kzinti weaponry, but don't switch over the harmonics yet; I'd prefer we stay at a more general state of readiness until we're sure we know what we're dealing with. Commander th'Zarath, I want you to run a-- no, scratch that. I want you to supervise Ensign O'Neill as he runs a Level Three diagnostic of the weapons systems." O'Neill had the makings of a fine young officer, but he had a tendency to coast if his COs didn't ride him mercilessly.

"Doctor, if there is any commerce raiding going on we'll almost certainly end up taking on wounded at some point; be ready for them. Professor, I want you to oversee the retrofit of Cargo Hold Delta as a quarantine area - commerce raiders means commerce raiders' cargo, and who knows what sort of things we'll end up having to confiscate? Best to have a secure staging area to put stuff. That's all, people."

That was another thing I believed in. Give your staff work to do, expect them to do it, and they'll perform up to snuff - if only to avoid irritating the Old Lady. Not that I merited the unofficial Captain's nickname, given my relative youth... but that wasn't the point.

Okay! I assume, given the dates involved, that this takes place before the TOS episode "The Cloud Minders" (thank you, Memory Alpha)? Or is it afterwards? Either way, I never actually saw that episode so don't worry about me being too terribly spoiled.

As for informational needs, I'm detailing my Navigational Officer to pull up and collate all of the info on Ardania and any reports on recent raids that he can find, and trusting him to pull out the relevant data (which OOCly is kinda silly of me, but hey, it fits the dynamic). The rest of the officers are given prep work to do, as detailed above. If there ARE foreign raiders about, I'm expecting Kzinti rather than Klingon, but I want to leave all possibilities open.

Also, I warned you my crew was gonna talk a lot... oh! And for the record, I linked to my app post (with my sheet and my crew listing) above, in the boldface entry for the ship's name.

What a tuber...

NCC-1371 USS Republic
Captain's Log, Stardate 2269.81, Captain Samuel DuSable reporting:

I have received orders to monitor sensor reports on the Klingon/Romulan border from station K-14. We will be projecting influence but not actually influencing. I've always wanted to explore beyond Federation borders, but that is certainly out of the question here. I only hope K-14 has enough recreation opportunities for a starship crew tasked with sitting and waiting.

"Good afternoon, we have our orders" said Captain DuSable to his senior officers, his usual greeting. "We will be monitoring sensor readings along the Klingon and Romulan border from station K-14. Their alliance seems shaky and whether they go to war or stay allied, either could mean danger for the Federation."

Before anyone speaks Hathem Lovok gets a sour look. "Am I supposed to have some expertise here? The last time I was in Romulan space I hadn't learned yet to walk"

"Commander Lovok, if anything we were chosen for this job because of our ship. The history of the USS Republic, and even the democratic promise in its name, sends a message." The captain wasn't so sure, but Lovok could get riled up where his ancestry was concerned.

It usually fell to Commander Lindsay Drexel to mediate and cut the tension. "But if it came to it, we could probably make you up to look like a Klingon. What is the latest news? Have any particularly interesting transmissions been intercepted?"

"Starfleet command will be giving a full report shortly. Interesting or not it's strictly confidential. If I'm lucky maybe we can eavesdrop on their own explorers."

What is the recent history of K-14? What are the most recent readings saying?

USS Exeter NCC-1672
Captain's Log, Stardate 2269.81, Captain Ulysses Sherman reporting:
Our latest mission is to rescue the colonists aboard the Deep Colony Ship Prometheus. They have lost control of their vessel in an ion storm and have two weeks of life support left. Our first priority is the safety of the colonists but we shall also attempt to salvage the Prometheus. Navigating the ion storm might prove difficult and surely there are many unseen obstacles ahead but I trust in the abilities of my crew.

Captain Sherman and his officers meet in the ready room. No time is wasted.

"Take a seat everyone. Commander Xorg, as always you may remain standing but just try to be still for a few minutes and I'll try to keep this short, deal."

Xorg nods as his crackling humanoid shape comes to rest, and the familiar hum of the energy being's pulsing form increases slightly in frequency.

"Our orders are to rescue the colonists aboard the Deep Colony Ship Prometheus. Reports indicate that their vessel has foundered in an ion storm and has less than two weeks of life support left. It's unclear what the condition of the ship is so we should be prepared to take their crew on board if we are forced to abandon the Prometheus. Obviously we don't want that to happen but better safe than sorry. Lt. Commander Trigger, I need you and the good Dr. Holland to take charge of setting up some temporary accommodations just in case. We should have some extra space in the shuttle bays."

Holland runs his hands across his wrinkly bald head and coughs. "Ion storm, I don't like it. Sir."

"You don't like anything. Commander Duchamp, what can you tell us about this ion storm? I would also appreciate any information regarding the Prometheus.

Lt. Rutger, how long will it take us to reach the Prometheus from our current coordinates? I'd like to get there as quick as we can but I don't want to risk get stranded ourselves so we'll make our final approach using impulse. It's likely that we'll need extra power for other systems in order to deal with this ion storm.

Commander Xorg, we'll need to reduce the interference the ion storm is going to cause on our ship systems, I trust that you'll be able to make that happen. Just keep me posted."

USS Eagle

Ardana is the only planet in the Federation that mines zenite, a critical ingredient in many modern medicines. Large megafreighters make regular runs in and out of this system, and a disruption of trade could have negative consequences throughout the Federation. Ardana's admittance to the Federation was rushed through six years ago in an effort to solidify trade relations; to date, no Federation envoys have visited the planet since its admittance. Their government is not known for being cooperative.

In the last six months, three entire freighters have disappeared. A police ship happened upon debris from one, and sensor scans indicate it was destroyed by disruptor-type weapons, indicated Klingon or Kzinti involvement. What happened to the cargo of zenite, and the other two freighters, is a mystery.

USS Republic

Erickson displays a map of area around Station K-14 on the viewscreen. The borders between the Klingons, Romulans, and the Federation from a roughly inverted T, with the Federation having the flat side. Station K-14 is placed as close as possible to the apex of the intersection.

"Overlaying current probe reports," Erickson says. "K-14 detected plasma weapon detonations here and here." Two dots appear, one in the Klach D'Kel Brakt system and another much closer, about twenty parsecs beyond the border on the Romulan side. "Our sensors also picked up the warp signatures of a small Klingon fleet maneuvering away from system QZH-139, just on the other side of the Neutral Zone. There have been no hostile action of late - or ever - in this area. During the brief flare-up before the Organian Peace Treaty, K-14 was too far away to see any combat."

Looking at the map, it is apparent that if the Klingon-Romulan alliance survives, K-14 may be the hub around which an entire war might turn.

USS Exeter

"This is a Class 7 ion storm, Captain," Duchamp answers. "It will wreak havoc on our systems; shields and most sensors will be disabled. Computer systems will operate at reduced capacity, and our phasers will be useless. It is also possible that we may lose main power intermittently as we pass through the nodes of the storm."

Rutger punches a few buttons on his console. "If we can maintain Warp 8 through the ion storm, we should be able to reach the Prometheus in twenty-six hours. Depending on the concentration of the storm, it could be as much as a week. Eight days at most. Flying through an ion storm is like trying to sail through a hurricane, except without the predictable winds."

"A class 7 ion storm? We won't be able to tow the Prometheus out of there, so if we can't get their systems back on, we'll have to leave her behind. Xorg, Duchamp, I want both of you working on ways to reduce this interference, the last thing we want to is to end up stranded out there with the Prometheus. Lt. Rutger, I want you to chart the quickest course out of the ion storm from the Prometheus's location, once we have the colonists on board I want to get out of the ion storm as soon as possible. Try not to take us through any known quantum distortion fields this time."

"Computer, how many colonists are on board the Prometheus?"

"Right then," I declared once the briefing was complete. "Fine job, Lieutenant. Set a course and let's get to Ardana, then. Warp Five." Warp Five would get us there quickly but not so quickly that it would put undue strain on our engines; if Starfleet wanted us there faster, the orders would have said 'all possible speed.'

Once the Officers had departed to their duty stations I headed to my quarters to sit and think for a moment - and to tie my hair back. I prefer a simple no-nonsense ponytail but my hair always seems to want to escape the hair bands and fly about around my face and it irks the hell out of me, but it's not the sort of thing one takes care of in front of the crew. "Computer, list all known probable uses for zenite." I hadn't wanted to bring up the fact that Carter's report had been thin on the subject, not when he seemed to have done an otherwise exemplary job. Let him be proud of himself for a little bit. "In addition, have the Kzinti or Klingon governments ever expressed an interest in obtaining zenite?"

Professor Nova Sez: Life is a karmic struggle in which the weak are ultimately crushed!

USS Kongo

Hawkins sighed as he clicked off the old Basie data tape. It was time to get down to the dullest part of the job.

"Captain's Log, Stardate 2269, ah, point 81. Orders've come in from Admiral Lance. Kongo is to proceed to the Xarantine system with all of Auldino's new friends to investigate a potential wormhole. I'm sure we'll be remiss in our duties to the spirit of inquiry if we don't exhaustively catalog each and every mote of dust within a dozen AUs of the singularity. Personal note: find out what Lieutenant Chu and the rest of the lower decks crew are up to and bribe them with whatever it takes to get in on the game. This is looking like a long trip."

Hawkins shuts off the recorder and flips over to Philo's frequency. "Yeoman, get the senior staff together in the briefing room for Ms. Auldino's presentation. I'm, uh, behind on the paperwork again, so encourage her to start the briefing without me."

Yeoman Philo acknowledges and signs off. Hawkins takes a few moments to enjoy the silence before that nagging feeling of honesty bites down. He gets to work on today's signatures, but not before pulling up his library terminal. "Computer, give me the SFCM entry for the Xarantine system, read aloud."

EXCEED CHARGE

NCC-1703 USS Hood

Joshua reviewed his orders, then signaled to the bridge, “Helm, set course for Stelenaris III, maximum warp, and inform the senior officers that there will be a department heads meeting at 0900 in the primary conference room.”

quote:

Captain’s Log Stardate 2269.81
The Hood has been ordered to Stelenaris III, a world consisting of old-style nationstates. Apparently they’ve requested the Federation’s aid in negotiating a settlement in an effort to unify their world. A noble sentiment, but I doubt it will be that simple, for an un-unified world to discover warp technology and still remain split is a sign of deep problems. Nonetheless I have confidence in this ship and her crew to do what they can to make their dream of peace a reality.

On another note, I’m afraid Torak is having some trouble fitting in. He’s taken up his role with a gusto, and somehow managed to commit the entirety of starfleet regulations to memory. However, the crew still clearly doesn’t trust him, and the situation is getting somewhat tense. Frankly, this is unacceptable. Torak is a man of courage, duty, and honor, that he’s a klingon is completely irrelevant. Though, on another level I suppose I can’t really blame them, I had no love for klingon’s when I first met Torak. However, I managed to overcome that prejudice, and if they expect to work aboard my ship they drat well better get over it themselves and quick. Anyhow, I can only hope Torak can win them over before I have to get involved, the last thing I need is to pick a fight with the other senior officers right out of the gate, but if they think I won’t, then by god they’ll be in for a surprise.

LOG ENDS

Primary Conference Room, 0900

“Alright ladies and gentlemen, for our first assignment, Starfleet has seen fit to send us to orchestrate a peace conference on an un-unified world. We are to host the conference aboard the Hood, so I’ll expect you to have dress uniforms clean and pressed. I’d also like briefs on the situation ready to present to the senior officers by 1600 hours today. Mr. LeBlanc, you’ll be providing a briefing on the history of the world and the political dynamics between the governments.”

The black-haired frenchman gives a firm nod. “Yes, sir.”

“I’d also like bios on the major players along with visual records, I want each and every crew-member to be able to identify them on sight.”

“I’ll have the bios on your desk by 1100 and distributed to the crew soon-after.”

“Very good.” Joshua turns towards his second in command, “Mr. Torak, you are in charge of security arrangements for the conference, I’d like to see preliminary plans and a briefing in the military capabilities of the various parties by the later meeting.”

“Yes, captain. I’ll get right on it.” Torak response is professional, he’s clearly trying very hard to act as he imagines is proper for a Starfleet officer.

“Excellent, now due to the overlap between the military and political dynamics of the various parties, I’d like you to coordinate with Mr. LeBlanc to ensure the senior staff gets a complete picture.”

“Of course, captain.” the second in command replies, while the frenchman looks annoyed. “Mr. LeBlanc, we can make arrangements to meet after we’re done here.”

“Of course, commander” The pointed stress on the rank was clearly intended as an insult, and LeBlanc seemed rather pleased with himself until he realized he’d earned a disapproving glare from the captain. Joshua considered reprimanding LeBlanc for a moment, but decided against it. First he’d have to see if Torak could deal with it on his own, the klingon would have to work with these people on a daily basis so it would be best to see if he could dispel this noxious attitude on his own. A raport wouldn’t develop on it’s own, and if LeBlanc continued to be intransigent, well then he would be in for an unpleasant visit to the Joshua’s office.

“Now, if we can continue. Dr. Young, I’d like a report on any potential medical or environmental issues we should be aware of when dealing with the Stelenarians.”

The matronly doctor nods, “Will do, sir.”

“Mr. Zhou,” Joshua had read each new officers personnel file, and he noted that the chief engineer Zhou Chen arranged his name in the traditional fashion with the surname first. “You’re in charge of preparing the necessary facilities for the conference, work with Dr. Young on whatever arrangements need to be made to suit stelenarian physiology, and with Mr. Torak on the any changes needed for the sake of security.”

The lanky engineer nods.

“All right then, you all have your assignments, we’ll meet again at 1600 sharp. Dismissed.” As the rest of the senior staff stands and prepares to leave, Captain Wolff signals to Torak. “Mr. Torak, could you remain for a minute. I’d like to run something by you real quick.”

“Yes, sir.” After all the others had left, Joshua is left alone with Torak, “So how are things going? I know it’s been a hectic couple of weeks, and I wanted to see how you were adjusting.”

Asking for briefs from all the major department heads on various aspects of the planet and its people. Also, asking how Torak is settling into his new life.

Lieutenant Erickson turns from the display, "With your permission captain, I'd like to focus on analyzing stray Klingon and Romulan transmissions, maybe break their codes. Hardly sounds like intervening to me."

The captain nods. Robert was a tech hound, but his theoretical background made the science post a better fit. "Granted. Lt Commander Green will assist you. I expect regular progress updates from you both. Commander Drexel, lay in a course. Let's see what there is to see on K-14".

DATAFILE XAR8322/J41P.4

The Xarantine system, Zeta Leporis, is home to a race of human-type creatures known as the Xaran or Xarantine. Before the treaty boundary declaration of 2255, Klingon forces repeatedly laid waste to their world, killing 60% of their population. Captain David Julius, USS Republic, was the first to respond and provide aid after the attack. With Federation assistance, the Xaran have rebuilt their infrastructure and are expected to apply for Federation membership in the next five years.

Xarantine has a population of three billion and is ruled by a constitutional monarchy.

Unmanned probes detected a major spatial distortion in cometary cloud of Zeta Leporis. The sensor data indicates the spontaneous formation of a singularity, possibly a wormhole.

USS Hood

Leblanc punches up his record files on the viewscreen. "Stelenaris III has a tripolar power arrangement. The Confederated Union represent a minority of the population but have territorial holdings all over the world. Their attitude is hawkish; Prime Minister Nagaer has repeatedly refused to appear at peace talks unless his terms are met.

The United Socialist States are a relatively new power which has embraced the previously under-represented populations of the world. They have been responsible for several brush wars in which they seized important resource centers, such as petroleum and agricultural areas. Their Premier is Vekshrev; he is old, frail, but still respected as a world leader.

The third power, the Kitsa Empire, ruled nearly seventy percent of Stelenaris III's population before the Klingon invasion. Their power is waning, but they are considered an important kingmaker in this scenario. Currently they tend to side with the Confederated Union, but there are important land and diplomatic disputes on both sides. Queen Ymar III has a reputation as vicious diplomat."

Leblanc nods to Dr. Young. "The Stellarans have a physiology similar to the Klingons; they are tough, adaptable, and quick to passion. Their psychographic profile indicates they are culturally adaptable and not easily offended by strangers, but disparate groups should be kept apart as much as possible."

"I might add," says Leblanc, "that each of the Stellaran powers have amassed millions of megatons in fusion warheads mounted on intercontinental-range missiles. Each power has their arsenal on constant alert, ready to launch within a few hours or less."

Once they are dismissed, the officers depart, all except Torak.

"Captain, I am pleased," says the Klingon. "Our mission has taken us nowhere near the Empire, and Commander Leblanc seems to understand that he needs to stay out of the way of me and my security teams."

I'll start your mission in the next major update! If you have any questions or comments before then, feel free to post.

USS Republic
Approaching Station K-14

The stars around the ship come to a rest as she drops out of warp. Station K-14, one of the many base stations built on the edge of the Klingon neutral zone. It is a simple design: a central habitable pod with three booms telescoping to large, rotating cargo bays and docking facilities.

"Captain," said Lieutenant Roe from the communications station, "I have the commander of K-14 asking to speak with you."

"Onscreen."

A tall, fit, balding officer appears on the screen. "Captain Du-Sah-Blay, I presume? I am Commander Stanlish. I'm sure your crew would appreciate some shore leave, but you are urgently needed on the border. We need you in position to respond the next time an altercation occurs on the border - we need better, closer intelligence on what's going on out there."

There is no way to be certain, but I believe in erring on the side of defense. Speaking of defense, you'll find our station well-armed, even if we haven't received the upgrades that some of the other border stations have. We'll be ready if the Klingons come."

Erickson puts the technical diagram for K-14 on the viewscreen:

Total armament: two photon torpedo launchers, six type-4 phasers, three type-3 point defense phasers, two long-range missile launchers. Comparable shields to your cruiser.

"Aye, sir," says Drexel. "Course laid in."

"Full power to sensor arrays," Erickson announces.

A few minutes pass as the crew busies themselves with the preparations for patrol. Suddenly, Commander Lovok speaks up.

"Captain, I do not wish to alarm you," he says, "but there was a vessel departing as we left K-14. I ran its registry; it's an Orion freighter with several warrants for unlawful shipping and resisting impounding. It is curious that the Commander let them leave the station unhindered."

"Hmm." An attack on the Federation's zenite supply could simply be designed to weaken us, I reasoned, but what if... "Computer, access Starfleet Intelligence database Eight-Seven Alpha Three. List all known or suspected incidences of hypervirulent plague viruses or intense radiation exposure events within the Klingon Empire or the Kzinti Patriarchy between the date the raids on Ardanan territory to six months prior. In addition, give me the latest intelligence estimates regarding the Narovk system."

Later that evening I was talking to the Professor about the query's results. "I figured that for attacks on the zenite supply to happen now, there had to be a cause. Why attack them now and not two years ago? If there was a plague or something that made zenite necessary to either the Klingons or the Kzinti - or, for that matter, if the Klingons had found their own supplies inaccessible - that would at least explain why they might need to raid our supplies. It's always possible that someone could just be raiding the shipments just to provoke us, but typically most attacks have reasons behind them."

The Science Officer nodded, and we talked the problem over for some time. He was a fine confidante; his nickname was well earned, for he reminded me of nothing so much as one of my instructors at the Academy. He had, he told me, served in a similar fashion to his last three Captains - and besides, I would have to be a fool to ignore his wealth of experience and knowledge. Maybe once a week or so we had these long discussions. I knew that I was not the only officer with whom he had this sort of chat - but to his credit, he kept secrets as assiduously as a priest, never even hinting at what he talked about with others, and I trusted him to do the same for me. Besides, it was good to have someone to talk to - although every so often he would go off on tangents about this archaic Earth sport called 'baseball.' I guess everyone needs a hobby.

Because gently caress yeah, Ben Sisko doesn't have to be the only Star Trek character who likes my favorite sport!

Six days. Six days in the howling madness of the ion storm. There is no sound to be heard, of course, but the random, everpresent jolts and sways of the ship keep the crew on edge, as does the constant alert they are required to maintain. Systems go down constantly, and repair crews work doubles just to keep the engines online. The crew is run ragged, but the voyage has taken a particular toll on Rutger. By the time they reach the Prometheus, his face is pallid and drawn, and his hands shake at the controls. Dr. Holland insists that he take at least 24 hours of rest as soon as they arrive; Ensign MacCormack fills in at Navigation.

Finally, the large, boxy colony ship lies off Exeter's bow, her mass filling the viewscreen. Captain Sherman joins them on the bridge as soon as they have the freighter in sight.

"Approaching Prometheus," reports MacCormack. "We're here." There is a perceptible sense of relief around the circle of the bridge.

"I've got a host of systems offline, Captain," says Xorg over the comm. "Shields, transporters, most of the weapons, warp engines are out for the moment. I should have them back online in less than an hour."

"The shuttlecraft won't survive in this storm," adds Duchamp.

"I can't imagine anyone would want to try a docking maneuver in this soup," says Trigger.

"I've worse news," says Duchamp. "There is a storm nexus bearing toward us that will tear both ships apart. We have two hours and twenty-six minutes to evacuate the Prometheus or warp out of this part of the storm."

"We've scanned six sectors," answers Erickson, "with no indication of major Klingon or Romulan movement. I am collating the sensor returns with data from Starfleet Intelligence - wait. I'm getting major energy readings from the Beta Penthe system. Looks like weapons fire, plasma detonations, warp signatures."

"I'm getting encrypted communications traffic," says Ensign Capella from communications. "Romulan and Klingon frequencies consistent with a major engagement."

"Beta Penthe is right on the other size of the neutral zone," Lovok adds. "We could be there in under ten minutes at maximum warp."

Commander Drexel turns to look at the Captain. "The Commander did express a need for closer intelligence, sir. This would be a prime opportunity."

USS Eagle
Stardate 2269.82

Starfleet Intelligence had no real data on Klingon plagues or radiation incidents - and the last remote probe of the Narovk system was nine months ago: no anomalous activity. Unfortunately, if there is a reason, it doesn't look like the Captain is going to find it here.

Thirty-one hours later, they arrive at Ardana. "Standard orbit established," says Carter. "We've received no transmission or hail from the planet below." On the viewscreen, the Captain can see a huge megafreighter docked with the orbital transfer station. Small shuttles fly out of the beautiful, swirling pink clouds of the gas giant below at short intervals, carrying the planet's valuable resource to be loaded for transport.

USS Hood

It is a full week at Warp 6 to Stelenaris, and the crew makes good use of their time. One of the smaller cargo bays is converted into a diplomatic enclave, with a large, circular table divided into three sections, one for each delegation. The mess plans a grand dining experience and party to welcome the Stellarans to the ship. Guest quarters are prepared and schedules drawn up. A sense of excitement dawns among the crew - theirs is a true mission of peace. If all goes well, they may save a world.

Captain Wolff assembles in the transporter room with his senior staff, all in dress uniforms, to receive the diplomatic parties. The first to transport aboard is Queen Ymar. As she materializes on the transporter pad, the elderly woman cracks a charming smile. The Queen wears an elaborate couture dress in gold and deep purple; it sparkles even under the cold lighting of the starship. Her company is entirely men, dressed in similarly elaborate uniforms adorned with medals and pins.

"Truly fantastic to meet you," she says, greeting Wolff with surprisingly spry curtsy. "The entire people of Stellanaris thank you for allowing us the use of your facilities. I pray the next few days will not be too much imposition. Do allow me to introduce my son, Prince Jasper-"

The Prince is already a man, and he wears a short ceremonial sword at his side.

"-and my Minister of State, Lord Sindwor." The Lord is a very old man, with a great beard and a face that seemingly cannot smile. Sindwor greets them all with a gruff, stately air. For a Minister of State, he does not seem to be a man of many words.

Once their party is introduced and shuffled off, Wolff signals to Chen, who begins the second transport. Prime Minister Nagaer beams aboard in a long, fine coat, with a single medal around his neck denoting his station. He is relatively young, and saunters forward with a swagger surprising for a stateman. "Good to finally meet some of you Terrans," he says, grasping the Captain's arm and shaking it wildly. "I bring with me my head diplomat, Hunell, and my chiefs of our armed forces. I'm sure we'll have plenty of time to get to know one another. Good to see you, good to see you."

As the Union leaders are led out the door, Chen seems to be having some sort of confusing discussion on the communications system. When they are finally clear, he turns to the Captain.

"Premier Vekshrev has apparently refused to be beamed aboard," Chen says. "There was an objection about it being unnatural. Should we dispatch a shuttle for him and his party?"

"Also, send down another pod to escort the Premier, tell him it's an honor guard." He takes out his communicator, "Wolff to bridge. We'll be sending down two shuttles momentarily, I want them under constant sensor surveillance, with the Hood ready to intervene on the off-chance something untoward happens." Closing it he turns back to the Chief Engineer, "Mr. Zhou, if you could discretely keep a transporter lock on the occupants of the two shuttles in case of an emergency I would greatly appreciate it."

"Yes, sir." The engineer nods and gets to work.

Professor Nova Sez: Life is a karmic struggle in which the weak are ultimately crushed!

USS Kongo - Briefing Room

Captain Hawkins keeps a careful eye on his chronometer. Hazarding a guess, he makes his way into the briefing room twenty minutes late. Auldino is, unfortunately, still talking.

"-fascinating gravimetric data, as you can see from this chart. Ah, Captain, we are all glad you could make it. If you would like, I'd be glad to restart my presentation-"

"No, no thank you, Doctor," Hawkins interjects. The rest of the command crew noticeably relaxes. "I've been doing my homework, I promise."

Auldino sat down, smiling placidly. She did everything placidly, and it creeped the hell out of Hawkins. The weird eyes were bad enough, but the woman seemed devoid of any emotional state beyond calm acceptance or mild curiosity. If she didn't display that equally alarming intelligence every so often, the captain would have suspected her brief possession left the woman brain damaged.

Hawkins presses a few buttons on his console, bringing up the system briefing and the written orders. "Evening, everyone. Our new job is to head to Xarantine and search for a possible wormhole. We're going into a charted, known system, and the locals are going to be applying for Federation membership before long. First priority is to have a nice, dull, safe trip. Second, take care of the Xarantines and make them feel welcome in our big happy family. Third, our science team's projects."

The captain starts pointing as he goes around the table.

"Sanchez, Engineering is going to be busy. If we're going anywhere near a weak spot in space-time, I want those engines triple-checked and damage control teams standing by. Send me the specs for whatever you end up doing, and if you're hard up for extra hands, I'm always available.

"Lesaid, Dr. Auldino should be sharing her astrometric data with you. You see anything suspicious, you back us off and we'll take another pass later." The Gallamite nods and gives one of his toothy smiles.

"Kun, Ensign Mikhalova, I hope to whatever god'll listen we won't need you on this mission." Hawkins leans back in his chair, lacing his hands together. "Questions and concerns?"

"Aye, sir," answers Drexel, a small smile crossing her face as she turns to plot the course. "Erickson, modulate the shields to mask our warp signature as we enter this system."

"Got it, Commander," says Erickson. The deckplates of the ship vibrate as she goes to warp, the engines straining to accelerate.

"Captain," says Commander Drexel, her eyes never leaving her console, "Starfleet regulations require me to inform you that we are currently in violation of the Romulan-Federation Peace Treaty."

"Acknowledged," says DuSable.

Just over nine minutes later, a moon moon rushes into view, a gas giant ten times the size of Jupiter covering the star behind it. The lights on the bridge immediately dim as the vessel goes into low-power mode to minimize her sensor signature.

"Captain, I'm getting...spectacular sensor reports," reports Erickson. "I have three Klingon cruisers and two entire squadrons of destroyers sweeping this entire system with what appear to be inverse tachyon fields. They are firing torpedoes at seemingly random vectors."

"Snaring a Kra'thak," Lovok says. "You Terrans would call it a snipe hunt. The Klingons are sweeping the system for a cloaked vessel." There is a pregnant pause on the bridge as the officers come to terms with the fact that if the Klingons can find a cloaked vessel, it is only a matter of time before they flush out a Federation starship.

Suddenly, the ship shakes as most of a Romulan warbird, sans the smoking remains of a warp nacelle, emerges from an explosion about a thousand kilometers off the Republic's port side.

"Exeter, we can barely read you," says the voice of Prometheus' captain. "I don't know how you Starfleet types intend to mount a rescue in this storm, but my hat off to you. I'll start staging our passengers for evacua-" The radio cuts off to static.

"Towing is absolutely out of the question," says Duchamp. "The subspace fluctuations in the storm would destabilize a tractor beam even if Xorg could keep it online."

"If we could get an engineering team over to the Prometheus," says Xorg, "we could mount subspace receptors on her hull. It would be extremely dangerous work; you corporeal beings are exceedingly fragile." Xorg floats over to a console.

"The radiation exposure alone could kill inside of an hour," says Holland.

"Transporter systems back online, Captain," says Xorg. "We're limited in our capabilities, though; the Prometheus only has one transporter pad."

Duchamp does some math in her head. "Six people every thirty seconds, that's a total evacuation in...seven hours, fifty-two minutes."

USS Hood

The shuttles depart inside the hour, and return quickly with Premier Vukshrev and over a dozen of his aids and assistants - several of the marines aboard the "escort" shuttle are forced to beam back instead of riding up. He arrives just in time for the "state dinner" to begin at 1800.

It is the usual, boring state function for about an hour: presentations, speeches, the usual minor faux pas and major gladhanding. Suddenly, the delicate air of the evening is broken by Torak striding across the mingling groups in the least subtle manner possible, directly for the Captain.

Luckily, he does not announce his business for all to hear. He pulls the Captain aside.

"Sir, we have a security problem," Torak says in his best subtle stage whisper. "Ten minutes ago, two Stellarans coded their way in to the emergency command bridge. One of them resisted our efforts to detain him and is in critical condition in sickbay."

"You have trespassed on Xarantine space," the man says. "Power down your engines and prepare to be boarded. Any failure to comply will result in the destruction of your vessel with everyone aboard."

It doesn't take long for things to get interesting; they are barely clear of the system, just six hours in, when all hell breaks loose.

"Captain!" Carter shouts. "There has been an explosion in the engine room of the Prometheus. She has stopped dead in space!"

We can get out, but at the very least they're going to know there was an unauthorized vessel in this area." Every eye on the bridge turns to Captain DuSable. On a less disciplined vessel, there might have been debate, a mess of voices weighing in on the subject. On the Republic, only one voice speaks.

"Probe away," says Erickson.

USS Exeter

"That...could work," says Duchamp, "if Trigger can get the phaser frequency right."

"Red alert, shields up," I snapped, and the bridge was bathed in the light of warning panels. "Conn, take us ahead; I want us between that cruiser and the Prometheus. Put us on her probable incoming vector. Ops, scan to make sure the Prometheus' only issue is her engines. Weps, prepare a spread of torpedoes." I took a breath, finally, and glanced at my Communications officer. "Record.

"'Unidentified Orion vessel, this is the USS Eagle. Be advised that the megafreighter Prometheus is suffering engine trouble, and given the nature of their cargo I am quarantining this region of space until such time as we can be certain the cargo poses no threat to organic life. Be advised that drawing to within seventy kilometers of the Prometheus will be considered violation of this quarantine, and in order to minimize risk of infection we will be forced to vaporize your ship. There will be no further warning.'" Another breath. "Send that to the Orions. Commander th'Zarath, if the Orions have not decelerated or changed course in--" Checking the time, running a quick calculation, "one minute thirty-nine seconds from my mark - mark! - fire a full spread of photon torpedoes right in front of them."

The command crew scrambled to obey my orders; inwardly, for a moment, I felt nauseous. The bit about the quarantine was at least believable - Zenite processing does call for organic technology that could conceivably be misused - and it gave me some cover for my unusually aggressive stance, but...

...I steeled myself against the doubts. The Orions are, strictly speaking, neutral - at least, officially speaking. They wouldn't pick a fight here, because doing so would cause their government's position to be exposed; as such, by making it clear to them that a fight was the only thing they'd get, they should turn and leave. If I was wrong, well, then we'd fight, but I suspected I had it right on this one. I hoped so, at any rate.

Organizing the crew and issuing demands to the Orion vessel - I would assume that my Command rating is the most appropriate roll to try and get them to leave? I hope so, anyways, because that's what I'm rolling:

He strides from the room calmly, not letting the slightest bit of tension or irritation show. For all the guests knew this was a prearranged event, an excuse called in to allow a person to gracefully excuse oneself from such an event. Better they think that then realize what was truly occurring. Once he and Torak were safely away from the party and moving quickly down the corridors towards sickbay the captain asked, "So why don't you fill me in on the details. Do we know their objectives or which faction they were aligned with?"

Hell yeah.

USS Exeter

"Our priority now is getting everyone to safety. We're leaving the Prometheus behind. Ensign, set a course to take us out of this storm. I'll save my congratulations for everyone until we're safe again. We'll need to get in touch with Command once long range communication is viable to see where to take the colonists."

Sherman once again sits in his captain's chair, attempting to hide the pride he has for his crew beneath the mask of duty he often wears.

"Engage!"

USS Kongo

As the Kongo comes about, she rocks to the right as her shields absorb a volley of torpedoes from the Xarantine ship. Lesaid deftly maneuvers the ship to avoid the followup phaser fire, and the deckplates hum as the warp nacelles power up. Suddenly, the firing ship disappears behind them as Kongo disappears into warp speed.

"They are not pursuing," Auldino announces. "Minor damage to our shields, Captain."

USS Republic

The view from the bridge is as if they were diving into a sea of cloud; once inside the gas giant's atmosphere, they can see nothing. The Republic is buffeted by disturbances, shifts in wind patterns and thermal layers. The bridge is nearly silent for over an hour; only Erickson's periodic sensor reports break the tension.

"Captain, a Klingon vessel has just warped into orbit," he says. "They're scanning the atmosphere."

"An active scan would detect our warp signature," Lovok adds, "even in the atmosphere."

"We could dive deeper into the atmosphere," suggests Drexel. "The ionization could mask our sensor signature - but the pressure could crush us, depending on how far down we have to go."

"The Klingon sensors are less powerful than ours," says Erickson. "They will be able to detect our presence at this altitude, but I doubt they will be able to identify us as a Federation ship."

"Unless they dive in after us," says Lovok, "and I have never known Klingons to be afraid of a little wind."

The faces of the officers turn to their Captain, the man who must decide: stay, dive, or run?

USS Hood

"They were wearing stolen Starfleet work smocks, Captain," says Torak, "and so far the one we have in custody refuses to identify who he is working for." Tovok looks left and right, paranoiacally (or perhaps dutifully) clearly the surrounding area of any prying ears or eyes. "Captain," he says, leaning in closely, "I do not wish you to feel that I have not done my duty in this part. The intruders used extremely sophisticated equipment, and we detected their attempts immediately. The intruders sealed the entrances, so it took my men just under two minutes to apprehend them."

There is a bit of a pause, and then Torak adds: "Perhaps we should consider moving these negotiations off the ship."

USS Exeter

"Aye, sir!" Rutger says. The Prometheus disappears as Exeter goes to warp. The colonists are exceedingly grateful for the rescue, and Duchamp monitors the breakup of the Prometheus by remote probe telemetry.

A few hours after their departure, Dr. Holland comes to the Captain in his quarters. "Sir, we have a problem," he says, his face betraying the seriousness of the issue. "My nurses were doing routine medical checks on the colonists, and, well, their leader is a man named Adam Courvais. His name sets off about three dozen warrants in the library computer, including four Federation arrest orders. Terrorism, treason, public endangerment, and theft of Federation property - a Starfleet shuttlecraft."

Professor Nova Sez: Life is a karmic struggle in which the weak are ultimately crushed!

USS Kongo

Captain Hawkins drags a hand down his face, heaving a sigh. A few shield capacitors earning their keep in exchange for temporarily avoiding a diplomatic incident was a fair trade. Didn't make what came next any easier.

"Alright," Hawkins says to the bridge as a whole. "We've gotten out in one piece, and avoided war with a potential Federation ally for the time being. We still have a mission to attend to. Kun, you've got an hour to put together a plan to get us back in that system undetected by their fleet. Dragoon anyone you need for the project. I'm going to go shout at someone until I get some answers."

Hawkins stalks off to his ready room. He pushes buttons and makes increasingly exasperated of the comms officers at Diplomatic Corps headquarters until he gets the sector attache on the line.

"Ambassador Tukol, sorry to wake you." The captain is clearly not sorry to have woken the Vulcan. "My ship was just fired on by a Xarantine vessel as we entered the system on a survey mission. I don't suppose you have any notions as to why that is...?"

"This is troubling news doctor. I'll try to have a peaceful chat with this Courvais, let's hope he's a reasonable man. I hope he won't be adverse to spending the rest of the trip in the brig."

Sherman activates his communicator.

"Captain Sherman to Lt. Commander Trigger, I'd like to have a chat with Mr. Courvais and I'd like you and three security officers to come along with me. Computer, where is Adam Courvais right now?"
