![]() Let's Play Medabots: Metabee Version! Q: What's Medabots? A: Medabots is a game about robots beating up other robots under the command of fleshy humans. It eventually got turned into a show (like all good games should) and aired for 50-some episodes. Q: So what's up with this game? A: In my opinion, the best Medabots game available right now. The game plays a lot like Pokemon does: wander around, fight random battles, win things a lot. Thing is, this game is really focused on story. Like, REALLY. Unlike casual Pokemon, however, skill at this game is relegated solely to understanding how the various Medaparts interact; there are no type advantages or benefits to grinding. Q: How's this thread going to work? A: First off, I'll be playing through the game normally. I'll do my best to show off all of the different Medabots you can get. In this game, you can choose the name of every Medal you get - these will be decided by popular goon vote. Q: Hang on... Metabee Version? A: Yup. This is one of two versions of the game; the other is Rokusho version. They affect the starting Medabot of you and your rival, some plot Robattles, and a few Medals gained throughout the game. Yapping Eevee will be popping up every now and then with some differences. Hey everyone, guess what? Let's Play Medabots: Metabee Version! Update 1: It Begins Alright, it's game time! My comments will be italicized, game text will be normal. ![]() Natsume is a Japanese game company well known for its Harvest Moon series. ![]() Well, well, well! Who's this shadowy person? Definitely not anyone we've seen on the box art. ![]() As part of the intro, we see four 'things' (we'll learned what they're called later) in that green box. They are named Revolver, Submachingun, Ochisuka, and Missile. ![]() We see that same shadowy figure blowing people away with what appears to be a laser. I want one! ![]() And welcome to the title screen of the game! Medabots (Metabee Version) is one of two, the other being Rokusho version. ![]() Good afternoon. Did you come by to see Dr. Aki again? : Yup! Well, then you should go check his office all the way in the back. : Okay, thanks a lot!Yeesh. This game is very dialogue heavy, and I'm running the images through a converter. It's still kind of a pain, though. ![]() Meet our protagonist. He is as-yet unnamed, and he controls much like a Pokemon game would. Holding 'A' runs, which is nice when you need to get somewhere. ![]() This is in the back room. Place looks really science-y - I kinda like it. This is our first official glimpse at Medabots. These guys? ![]() Yeah. They aren't doing anything interesting. Let's go see if we can find that Dr. Aki guy the greeter talked about. ![]() Here he is. At the bottom left room of the room. ![]() Who's the old guy? I'm looking for Dr. Aki. ![]() Crap, the old guy's the doctor? Who'd have guessed? : Hmm? Oh, it's you. You come here quite a lot. Don't you know I'm always busy? um...uh... : Dr. Akiii! You always forget my name! I'm . . .Hey, guess what? We get to name the protagonist! ![]() For the purpose of getting things done, we'll go with Boy Wonder's official name, Ikki. ![]() Thanks for remembering us. : But I'm busy so I can't spend too much time with you. : But I wanna learn more about Medabots!Entitled little crap, isn't he? : Okay, okay. If you really mean that, then it'd be best to go visit my granddaughter Nae's research room. : Your granddaughter?![]() That doesn't tell us anything. : She knows almost as much as I do about Medabots. : Really? Yay! Okay, well, I guess I'll be going!Let's go find this Nae. ![]() Nah, let's bother this guy instead. ![]() Well, don't need to be rude about it. Because all progress is made by defying authority, let's go in! ![]() Oh god, he's spotted us and now we have to fight. We met his eyes... : I told you this room was off limits, kid!![]() Mother of- What the hell, man? I was just trying to progress the story. ![]() : We've got some very important research in progress here. Only those with proper clearance are...I'll have you know I'm a card-carrying protagonist. Open up! ![]() : Ah... My apologies, Miss Nae. This kid was trying to get into the room without permission, so I was just... : Um...I... : Pleased to meet you. My name is Nae, what's your name? : Nice to meet you. My name is Ikki. That's very nice and all. How important is she? ![]() : ...world as the authority on all things that are related to Medabots. That's important. : Wow, that's amazing! : Let us drop the formalities, shall we? So, do you like Medabots? : Yup! : Well then, do you want to come see my research lab? : Wha!? Are you sure it's okay? : Miss Nae! Surely you can't be serious about showing such important research to a kid! : I really don't mind. So, shall we go Ikki? : Okay!Sweet. We get ourselves access to a top secret research facility (because we're a kid and kids are innocent, didn't you know?) ![]() Place looks plenty awesome. It's got some sort of Medabots fighting ring in the right. Nae probably runs some sort of gambling ring at night. Let's go up and talk to the good doctor. ![]() : ...developing now. : Elemental Series? I've never heard of that before on "Medabots Weekly". : Actually, it's still a secret! : Holy Medaroli! I get to see them before everyone!Holy Medaroli? There are no words... : We're not finished with them yet, so they aren't fully functional. But you can go see them for yourself.![]() Let's take a good hard look at these motherfucking ![]() : That's "Aquacrown", a Sea Type Medabot. It can transform its Medaparts to help out allies.![]() : That's "Windsail", an Air Type Medabot. It can transform its Medaparts to lower enemy abilities.![]() : That's "Saidron", a Floater Type Medabot. It can transform its Medaparts to attack bravely during Robattles.![]() : That's "Earthkrono", a Tank Type Medabot. It can transform its Medaparts to protect allies. What are the odds we'll end up with every single one of these? ![]() : ...so you can come whenever you want.Let's check out the rest of the area before we leave. ![]() That's a lot of shining things. I hope we get all of them. (We probably won't.) Oh well. That's everything. ![]() Let's get out of here. There are scientists everywhere and they're all busy. ![]() : I'd better hurry up and get home! "Medabots Weekly" is gonna start! He mentioned that Medabots Weekly thing before. It's some sort of TV show, I think. But first looking around! ![]() This is a the shop of the area, Hopmart. It'll be important once or twice, bu not often. The pink house below us belongs to one of our friends, Erika. ![]() The big building in the top left is some sort of warehouse, and the middle building is the school. ![]() Then there are the residential areas. No one cares about these people. ![]() And finally we have our house. Let's go visit, it's TV time! ![]() : Where did you go? You always just disappear on me. : Later! I've gotta run! : Hold on!Smell ya later, gramps. TV takes precedence over courtesy. ![]() : Hi Salty, I'm home. Oh man! I've gotta hurry and turn on the TV before it comes on. It's TV time!![]() : Looks like I made it just in the nick of time. This first part is one giant cutscene with occasional button presses. It's tedious, but the game gets better. ![]() How are we seeing the studio? Shouldn't we be watching the TV screen? ![]() Hi there. : What time is it? : Time for "Medabots Weekly"! : What's for this week? Huh? Huh? : Now just calm down. This week is "How to assemble a Medabot"! : Hmm? The way to put us together? : Yes! Okay, experts and first timers, let's learn together! Here we go go go!![]() : Let's attach some Medaparts to him!Hey, guess what parts they're going to use? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() How about that, they used the ones from the intro. : And...the finishing touch! She throws a medal onto the Medabot and it starts punching the air. ![]() Thanks for that. ![]() : Are we already finished!? : Bye for now everyone! : See you next week!![]() : If only I had a Medabot of my own...![]() Hey! We were watching that! ![]() : Mommm! : If you've got time to sit and watch TV, then you've got time to go down to the Hopmart and pick up some Spice-A-Roni for tonight's dinner. : Maaaan. : Do you have a problem?Only your totalitarian and tyrantial regime. : Okay. Okay. : I don't have any change, so here's a $50 bill. You got $50.00. Sweet. Think of all the awesome things we can get with this. ![]() Let's hop down to Hopmart. When we enter... ![]() you FOOL : Why in the world did you buy such expensive Medaparts without permission!? Just WHAT are you gonna do with them!? : Well... : What do you mean "Well"!? I said "What are you going to do!" : Yeah, I wonder what I should do with them. : If you want to keep your job, you'd better figure it out!![]() Bossman leaves in a huff. ![]() : Excuse me. : Oh, can I help you? A Medabot? I have a great one for you. : Um...no, I need Spice-A-Roni... : I've got a sweet deal on a totally awesome Kabuto model here! Your friends definitely won't have THIS! You'll be the coolest kid in town! : Um...I... : So how much do you have? $50? Perfect! I'll give you a great deal on the whole set for $49.80! Okay, all set! I'll even throw in a Tinpet.Hey man, we just wanted some food. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Surprise of surprise, the parts he got are the ones from the show. : Now you're a Medafighter! So what's your name anyway? Mine's Henry. What's yours? : Well, I'm Ikki, but.. : Ikki huh? That's a great name for a Medafighter, don't ya think? Well, now you're all ready to make your big debut in the Robattle world!![]() Jerk be taking my money, see if I ever come back here again ![]() Oh ho, the plot thickens! to something resembling a thin soup. ![]() Let's go face the music. It's not going to be good; it'll be in some sort of minor key with diminshed 5ths. Oh god, the diminshed 5ths. ![]() : Um ...uh... : What's that box you have there? : Waaah! T-that's! : I can't believe you did this! You don't mean that you bought a toy with our dinner money!? : I did. . .No! We must protest the high-handedness! Tell her the truth! : Go think about it in your room! : Okay...Eh, the gently caress you going to do? ![]() : (Sigh) Are you gonna cheer me up, Salty?Monologue time! : Well, I may be stuck here, but I should at least open the box. This goes with this and this goes with... : All done! Huh? It's not moving? What's wrong? Oops! I forgot the most important part! Sniff... sniff... Well, gently caress. ![]() Guy walking home, all by himself. What can go wrong? Unknown: Bwa ha ha ha ha! Oh jeez, this can't end well. : What? W-who are you! : Do not fear. It is I! The Phantom Renegade! I have come to bring you a present. : ???? The Phantom who? : Bwa ha ha ha ha! It doesn't matter! Take this Medal! Give this to your child! Present this to your boy!!![]() I like this line : Any way you want, just give it to him! Farewell! The guy walks off. : What was that all about?None of us know, either. ![]() Cool. Get out, we're moping. : Oh! Isn't that a Medabot? : Dad... : Could this be the reason why your Mother is all bent out of shape? : Yeah... : Let me see.![]() Hey, hands off the merch. : Oh, there's no Medal inside there. He can't move without a Medal. It's called a Medabot because of the Medals, you know. So, we put the Medal in just like this. Tah dah!![]() Oh god he's called the power of Beelzebub into our toy. : Whoa! It moved! : Next you need to have a Medawatch to command your Medabot. Here, look what Daddy got you. : Wowwwwwww!! Thanks a lot, Dad! : Ha ha ha. Looks like you're all better now.![]() That's the thing that the Ghost of the Theater gave our Dad. ![]() You get to name this one too! ![]() Hey! No 4th wall breaking! Right, so the menu. ![]() Four options: Medawatch, Item, Vehicle, and Save. Medawatch allows us to mess with our Pokerobots, and the other things are blank right now. Save just saves. You can see the amount of cash we have on hand right now: it's only $0.20 thanks to that Henry jerk. ![]() Right, that's it for the update! Next time: Beating up kids for fun and profit! Hey, remember those names? I want two names, one for the protagonist and one for our medal. The limits are 10 characters each.

I had this (Rokusho version, though) and the other Medabots GBA game. The one that was like Smash Bros, where it's nothing but 2D arena battles. I even played the Medabots browser game! I played the hell out of these and watched the show religiously. My favorite late-game parts were the Belzelga parts. What's better than a Medibot that punches so hard that it destroys its own arms, but can regenerate them to keep on punching? Schubalts fucked around with this message at Feb 11, 2013 around 03:43 |

I am so lame I may actually own the first season of the Medabots show. Guilty pleasure; back when dubbing was cheesy but in a great way and it just worked so well with an already wacky show. Henry is the best. This game itself is actually a remake of the third game in the series, if I recall right. There were still a bunch of amazingly broken part combinations though. Goddamn but I wish we would get the games that came after this for the DS when the series revived in Japan in recent years. Opposing Farce posted:Huh. Oh man, this game is HARD, but I loved it. Like a lot of games by Natsume, the spritework and general polish is great; and the localisation does a good job of taking a lot of dialogue cues from the show (hence "Holy medaroli"). Mechanics-wise the game is challenging strategically in ways very unique from most collect-and-battle games at the time. You can have an 'unbeatable' setup with the right parts, which is good - because this game is very unforgiving when it comes to losing fights. Will we get much control over deciding builds, in addition to Bot names? Oh yeah, this isn't the only Medabots game of this style, if I recall. There are PS1 and DS games that share the battle system, but were never released in English.

I loved the show and this game as a kid. Keep Ikki's default name, but since Metabee doesn't really get any personality, you might as well rename him. Call him Medabob. Or failing that, Joseph Montiki.

Update 2: Destroying Hopes and Dreams All right, we've got our new pal Metabee and crushed the expectations of our mother. ![]() Medabots, move out! ![]() The screen flashes. It's somewhat jarring, especially when you don't expect it. ![]() Our good friend Erika walks up. I didn't know who she was the first time I played, so I was very confused here. ![]() Holy crap! Er, should that be Holy 'Medaroli'? : I need one if I'm gonna become a reporter! What about you,Ikki? You've got a Medawatch, don'tcha? Have you Robattled yet? : Hmm? Well, sorta.Weak. Get a better excuse. : Hmmm, could it be that you haven't started to Robattle yet? If that's the case, then I'll be your first opponent! : Wha! ? No. hold on Erika! I'm not ready for...I get the weird feeling there's some ulterior motive for not wanting to fight right now... ![]() It can't be fear, because I feel none : This Robattle is just for fun, so win or lose nobody will have to give up anything, okay? Now there's no reason not to, right? So let's do it!We FIGHT, human child! ![]() This here's the battle intro screen. We get the name of our opponent (Erika, in this case), the type of field (useful for deciding what leg parts to use), the Medabots the opponent has (only one), and a little pre-battle quip. explanation is OVER. Now we fight to the death. ![]() Here we get to choose our Medabots. Gee I wonder who to pick... ![]() And now we start the Robattle. This is our "Command Medabot" menu - it pops up anytime a Medabot is at the left side of the field. Starting at the bottom and working our way counter-clockwise, we have: Medaparts, Medaforce, Status, Aim, Rotation, and Auto. ![]() Medaparts allows us to choose how to attack. The "targeted" part expands and contracts a bit. The "targeted" thing is bullcrap, though. Medaforce does absolutely nothing yet, so skipping it. Woo. ![]() Status allows us to see the status of our Medabot... ![]() ...and the opponent's Medabots. Erika's Medabot, Brass, isn't very good. The Medal doesn't give any bonuses, and Variablehair doesn't even do anything. ![]() Aim tells you...absolutely nothing. I think it has something to do with target decision, but I have no idea. ![]() Rotation allows you to set up a rotation pattern. This is essential, because it allows me to speed up the game while sitting back and doing nothing. ![]() Auto turns on the rotation pattern. This way, the Medabot doesn't stop for instructions. You can stop it by holding the B button. ![]() Attacks play out in a specific way. First, it tells you what the attack will be- in this case, Brass will be using Chain Gun. ![]() The game then switches to a bot vs bot screen where the first Medabot fires at the second. Different attacks have different animations. ![]() The part damaged explodes a bit, and numbers pop up. ![]() The bar goes down depending on the damage dealt. In this case, 15 damage to my leg part. ![]() The Medabot will only fire when it reaches the center of the lane. ![]() Oh hey, the number is equal to the other number. ![]() When a Medapart reaches 0, it blows up and can't be used for the duration of the Robattle. ![]() Missile, Metabee's head shot, is very powerful. It also has a special property... ![]() Chain reaction. When damage from certain attacks go over the health remaining in a part, the remainder will go after another part. This can be useful when everything is damaged. ![]() Occasionally, you'll crit. Critical hits usually result in a part being destroyed. ![]() In this case, it was the head part. It doesn't matter if there are parts left - once the head part is destroyed, the Medabot is done. ![]() As demonstrated. ![]() Sweet victory. We still had 20 seconds left in this battle - if time runs out, the winner is decided by Medabots left > Medaparts left > Health left. ![]() Because we won, we get spoils. Or would, if this weren't the tutorial fight. ![]() After the battle, there's some more text. It changes depending on whether you win or lose. ![]() Experience is used for determining level. ![]() Levelling up results in bigger numbers in certain areas. It also has other effects that I'll detail later. ![]() Why thanks. I got it recently. : But I won't lose next time! Oh yeah! This isn't the time or place for this. There's a big Robattle contest going on at the school, you know! I'm gonna go on ahead, okay? See you there!![]() She runs off. Let us follow for plot. ![]() This place is open now. If I had tried to come here earlier, it would have been blocked. The game isn't too subtle about its railroading. ![]() She mentioned this earlier before running off. What's the deal? : You're late! It's already over. It looks like the leader of the Screws was the winner. They've got full control of the place!![]() Screws, huh? We're the protagonist, so we have speshul powerz, right? ![]() This is spike... ![]() ...and this is Sloan. Spike is really cocky, and Sloan has this weird fixation on clothes and laundrey. ![]() Meet Samantha. This person is female. Scary, I know. : Okay, I'll take it easy on you! Let's do it! : Ikki, say cheese! : I think you're pointing your camera at the wrong person! We will be the winners! Sloan, go for it! : I'm gonna mess your clothes up!![]() Sloan's fight intro. He's Round One of every Screws fight. Not a big deal right now. ![]() His Medabot is Totalizer. It's built solely for defense - look at that 120 defense in his legs. That's absurd, especially when most damage is 15-30. ![]() His only method of attacking is Laser. Lasers are very powerful, but kind of inaccurate. ![]() As shown. It took out my Medaparts in one shot. ![]() Either way, we win. ![]() This is our first actual win, so you know what that means... ![]() We get a part from the loser. ![]() Tyranolaser is a Laser-using Medapart. I don't really like it, but that's because I don't like high-risk high-reward. I prefer my Missiles, which have Chain. ![]() Jesus shut up about your clothes. ![]() And you're a prick! Everyone in this game except Ikki is insane! : Your next, Spyke! Get him!Huh. I didn't even notice that typo every single time I played the game. ![]() Hey, we beat up your buddy. They ain't that useless. ![]() Spike is just a jerk. He doesn't have any weird things to say to us. So violent, though. ![]() His Medabot is Cyandog. It's basically Metabee, except shittier. All it has is Rifle attacks, so it's not even a threat. ![]() If a Medapart needed for an action gets broken on the way there, you get this. ![]() His left Medapart was destroyed, and that's the command it was going to use. ![]() Oh hey, skill up. This thing helps determines the damage you do. Handy to have high numbers in. ![]() Get outta here. ![]() Hey now. My intestines are the same size as everyone else's. You just aren't good. ![]() We got Cyandog's legs as forfeit. ![]() Second verse, same as the first; it's just a crappy version of Metabee's legs. ![]() Oh, but it was. The only disparity was your lack of talent. : How pitiful. You lost against him. I will face you next.Bring it! ![]() Er, maybe not. I don't want to play with you. ![]() Sam's Medabot is Oreganocat. Light defenses, but pretty quick. ![]() Parsleycat's attacks are all run-up-and-punch-you types. Nothing special, but Metabee has a little bit of trouble getting hits off. ![]() Whuh-oh. Status effects usually aren't good. ![]() This isn't good. Stop Mobility means I don't get to move until it wears off. Fortunately, it wears off almost immediately. ![]() And with that, we win. Hurray. ![]() That's a large mouth. That's probably why you lost. ![]() We get Thymecat's head part as reward. ![]() Thunder, the attack this piece uses, procs the Stop effect. CRG/RAD is approach/retreat respectively. ![]() Look, I didn't have to do anything. You brought this on yourself. : Amazing! I got some great shots of the Robattle! I can see the headline now, "Miracle Victory!" : "Mirace"?Let's go. We got what we came here for. ![]() What now? : Now what! Didn't we settle this fight? Is there an echo in here? : We were playing by kids rules so the win doesn't count! I'll show you something amazing using the real rules. Cumencat! Transport! Spyke! Sloan! Transport your Medabots too!The Medabots show up to play. Uh.... ![]() You bet. I will be taking full advantage of this as soon as possible. : Sorry, official rules. You'd better be prepared! : H-hold on a sec!Oh well. We'll lose this one. I might get lucky and take out Cyandog or Sagecat, but Totalizer's attack will just ruin - ![]() Uh. Our Medabots!! What the heck is that thing!? A KABUTO Medabot doesn't have the data to even DO a technique like that! : I'm gonna wet my pants! In this case, there aren't any face icons, so I can't tell who's talking. I guessed with that Sloan icon, though. ![]() Neither do I, lady. And we don't get any parts, so the loss doesn't actually count. : Someday you'll be the one doing laundry! : You haven't seen the last of us!They all stalk off, very much offended. Hell if I know what happened. : Wasn't that amazing! What WAS that just now? : Umm... I don't really know. Anyway Erika, what's the headline of the school's paper's gonna be? : Hmm... How about "Awesome Medabot Appears"! What do you think? : I like "Awesome Medafighter Appears". : No no, your Medabot was awesome, not you, Ikki. : Aw man. What do you mean "aw man"? Stand up for yourself.I just hit Auto for every fight... : Okay, well I'm gonna go start writing the article, so why don't you go and look for Robattle opponents around school?![]() Yes, Ikki, that's exactly what she just said a little bit ago. Would you like this written pamphlet on the Department of Redundancy Department? I wrote it myself. The school entrance is actually farther up, where the Screwballs walked off. ![]() Nice place. What's up with the umbrellas in the rack? It was dry when I got here. ![]() Hm. I smell a plot hook. But first... ![]() Random Battles! The opponents here are Girl, Boy, and 2 Legged Medabot. ![]() The girl has a Churlybear. Not bad, though its Float legs aren't 100% suited to this area. ![]() Which is woods, for some strange reason. Also, Break is one of three different attacks in this area - the boy's Medabot has the other two. ![]() Break is just this ball of black energy chucked at the Medabot. Not too dangerous. ![]() Splasher is what we get from this battle. ![]() It allows us to use break. Break is very accurate, what with the doubled success rate. ![]() Boy is the second person we can fight right now. ![]() His Medabot is Kintaro. For once, a Medabot with two different attacks. His arm attacks are just Hammer strikes, nothing special. ![]() His head, however, uses Press. Press is exactly the same as Break, with a different animation. It doesn't actually look like an eldritch black hole has opened up to swallow Metabee. ![]() Woo. We get our prize for winning. ![]() Hammer is just a melee attack. Nothing special. ![]() ![]() ![]() Grinding for parts gives us the rest of Churlybear... ![]() ...and gets 2-Legged Medabot to show. ![]() Looking like Spike's Medabot is Krosserdog, a weaker version of Cyandog. ![]() It's just a Rifle attack. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Grinding finishes off the collectables for this part. Turns out the dice is rolled right before deciding, so State Saving spam helps. It also had our Medabot level up a bunch. ![]() Huh? What's this Medaforce thing? I have a command for it, but nothing good happens when I use it. ![]() Oh no, it's Digivolving. Even in a different series I can't get away from it. ![]() The medal glows white ![]() Congratulations! Your Caterpie has evolved into a Metapod. At levels 10, 30, and 60, your Medal will evolve and change shape. It's usually accompanied with a Medaforce. That's it for this update. Next time: What's this 'Medaforce' and how does it help me win? Complete Medabots: Metabee Churlybear Kintaro Krosserdog

I was wondering how you were going to present all of this... I'd say you handled it pretty well! ![]() The only thing I might make note of is that you didn't explicitly point out something about Samantha's Medabot, or why LIGHTCIRCUIT is worthless right now. (Neat trick with the naming though.) Edit: \/ Fair enough! Yapping Eevee fucked around with this message at Feb 16, 2013 around 00:23 |

I'm actually not that fond of the missile head and swap it out for the just as powerful but more ammo and hp head off Krosserdog. Much more reliable once some rear end in a top hat shoots off the submachine gun arm, that thing's a beast. This early part of the game can be a real dick, since you can randomly get head sniped and wind up with a game over when you lose a part off your only bot. Doubly so once enemies start bringing 2 or 3 bots.
